    @jasongrieves
It's a hardware issue. Either the graphics cards or the mounting/cooling hardware is defective. I'll be using premium cooling pads and Arctic Silver when installing my new 560m so that should help the new card last longer than the 460m.

    @NGH
The 670m is possible, if you buy from ebay check to make sure the card is fully MXM 3.0b compliant and not an OEM variant. Stay away from the 675m as it has a TDP of 100w and will overburden the notebook power supply and cooling systems.

560m arrived today. Installation was a cinch. Except for removing the x-clamp from the back of my 460m. Glue on both sides of the clamp made it incredibly difficult to pry off. Even with the aid of an old credit card to help pry things lose I had to put a lot of pressure on the PCB. Had to re-install GPU drivers to get full GPU support.

~10 minutes of FurMark and the card hit 89C. Compared to the mid 90's my 460m was getting this is a definite improvement. Card idles between 39 and 40C.

Quick question, I noticed the new NP9130 is out with backlit keyboard.

Is it possible to upgrade my NP8130 with the backlit keyboard of the NP9130? Just curious :)

No it's not, the ribbon connectors (wires and stuff) are different from the EM series.

    Thanks for your reply Mr_Mysterious

I'm assuming it would be possible to put in the new I7-3610qm and 670m graphics card?

You won't be able to upgrade your 8130 to an Ivy Bridge CPU, but the new mainboards in the 9130 are backwards compatible with the Sandy Bridge CPU.

As for upgrading to the 670M, I don't think anyone has tried given that these laptops are limited in upgradeability compared to the 8150/9150. You may run into similar issues that others have when they wanted to upgrade their 150/170 HM to the 7970M offered in the EM.

The 7970m is a 100w TDP part. The 670m is rumored to be a 75w TDP part though notebookcheck.com doesn't have official numbers. If this is the case then it has the same power draw and cooling requirements as the 460m and 560m, both supported cards. I feel the retailers in the forum are being a little cautious about 670m upgrades since they are as of yet untested.

alright.. now, i've decided to get the samsung 830 256gb notebook upgrade kit /Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147138.

one last thought that came to mind before ordering. are there any new technologies on the verge of being released? I couldn't find anything.. It would be just a shame if I get it now and than shortly after a newer better version comes out and I could get samsung 830 for less dollars..

    cheers

For better temps, would it be better to prop up the back of area of the laptop ONLY or even the front area? I have some rubber footings available. And how many inches should I prop up?

I would bother because I live in a tropical country where the ambient temp here is 33C. Can you imagine how hot my components are even though I use Prolimatech PK-1 TIM which is one of the best pastes out there?

Please, just answer my question, nothing else. If you don't have anything to share, don't bother answering.

301.24 gives me BSODs all over. 296.10 is BSOD-free for me.

Well I've gone and done something stupid...

I've had this laptop for about a year, and noticed the gpu temps were creeping up a bit, so I opened up the laptop to check for dust buildup inside in the fans units. Sure enough, there was a thick layer of dust partially obstructing the airflow across the heatsink. I cleaned that out no problem, but when I was cleaning off the actual fan itself, I broke off one of the fan blades.

With everything reassembled, it seems to be running fine. Proper temps and no weird noises, but I'm a little worried about having messed up the fan balance, or reducing the fans efficiency. Should I be worried? If so, where can I find a replacement part? If I can get a new one, replacement would be trivial.

Note: this was the GPU fan, not the the processor fan. Interestingly there's a difference between the two: The processor fan has a reinforcing ring of plastic around the outside, the GPU fan does not.

You really have to be worried with that. You are losing optimal fan performance with that. Contact your reseller for the replacement.

Hi! I hope there are still some people in this thread that could help me out!

I own a Sager NP8130, and recently I decided I wanted to upgrade to an SSD.

So I bought an SSD, and a caddy for my HDD to go into the Optical Bay.

I Installed the SSD earlier today, and everything worked perfectly. The problem I am facing arose now that I am trying to take out the Optical drive to put in the HDD + Caddy.

I can't seem to take off the front cover to remove the Optical drive! I have all the screws that I think hold it down out, and I have MOST of the front plate (the part around the keyboard) up off the body. The only part that still remains is the very back part, underneath the screen and above the exhaust fan covers. It just wont budge! And I don't see any screws that could be holding it down.

I have spent a few hours googling, and everybody says that replacing the ODD is a piece of cake, but I can't even seem to access it!

I would really appreciate any help, I really want to get my hard drive in and be done with this upgrade. Thanks in advanced!

Help! I have owned a 8130 now for well over a year and out of nowhere it has started to shut completely off instantly without any notice. This kind of thing happens usually when the computer is overheating but I monitored all my cpu temps and they were consistently lower than 60 degrees. It is also completely random at when it decides to shut off - I'm not even play games just browsing the interenet and it will do it in 5 min or hours later. Really makes no sense - I'd appreciate any help thanks.

Have you made sure your fans and heatsinks are dust free?

Are you getting any sort of BSOD at all? recently?

Is this happening with the AC adapter plugged in? Can you power on your laptop immediately after it just shuts down on you?

Can you remove your battery and run it on AC only to see if the battery may be affecting it in any way?

Have you tried a different outlet in case the outlet has a short? Are you plugged into a surge protector and can you try plugging the surge protector into a different outlet?

Has your laptop been running slowly lately prior to the beginning of the random shutdowns?

    hey there,
I'm looking to do the same with my np8130. Which SSD and caddy did you get? Also, what type of HDD do have?

As for getting the ODD out - if you remove your HDD cover there should be a small screw on the left. this is fixed to your ODD - which comes out in one piece. So don't try to take off that front cover or anything like that. Just take off that screw and you should be able to slide the whole piece out.

    cheers!

Hey thanks for the reply. It stopped doing it for the last week but then I noticed the only time I was using my notebook was on battery. Now again plugged in its going completely dead - no bsod and I can instantly turn it back on - the boot in safe mode screen comes up. I also tried different outlets same problem and the computer hasn't ran slow at all. I am gonna try now without battery in but it seems this could be power cord related? The only heat I feel on the computer after it dies is right underneath the mousepad and its barely warm. One thing also is that the power cord did break away from the brick but just the rubber part and that was a awhile ago.

I don't know if this has been talked about much, but does anyone else's P151hm1 have a lot of wear on the palmrest and mousepad after less than a year of use? The mousepad starting getting wear only after a few months, but I've noticed that the palmrest has worn off somewhat, the sort of rough plastic is wearing off to show a darker glossy plastic.

Same thing has happened with the most used keys on the keyboard as well, they've gotten, shinier... especially in the WASD and E keys. Must be from the gaming.

To be fair, I do use this laptop as my main computer for work and play, so I'm on it 6 to 7 days of the week for multiple hours.

Is there anywhere I could get a new palmrest/case for it though?

So my overheating problem has still not resolved. I finally got a gpu heat monitor and in the end its been my gpu all along but only when my computer is plugged in. If I watch anything fullscreen the temps spike up to 100+ C. I don't know what to do at this point - I opened it up and sprayed some air into the vents but that doesn't seem to accomplish much. How do I know if fans are working properly? Has anyone else had this problem? I have to admit this problem all began with construction being done in my room and my computer may have been sucking in a lot of dust.

    Hi,

Apologies if this problem has been posted before, but I've done a quick skim through the forums and found nothing much about my problem.

My NP8130 is about 1.5 years old, and recently has been suffering blackout problems. I would be doing anything at all, and suddenly the screen would freeze, and black out. When I turn it off and on again, the screen would remain black.

I have taken it to a laptop repair shop, and they have said it's most likely a motherboard problem (no problems with the graphics card, apparently). He has also said the fans would not start upon booting up. Could anyone on the forum who has had this problem before confirm this?

Also, if it is a motherboard problem, may I know where I could purchase the parts to replace it?

    Much thanks!

    Hi guys,

I have had my 8130 for about 8 months now. It was working just fine all along on windows 7.
Yesterday, while I was using my laptop, all of a sudden, there was a blue screen which stated that I had to restart my pc or smth of that sort. And then it restarted itself and got stuck before completely booting up. There was this error "Media test fail, check cable" PXE-E61

I did some reading about it (I'm a novice in this field really) and I checked my "boot order" and found that network was in last place and my harddrives were first. So that wasn't the problem.
Is there any solution to this, or do I have send it back to the shop ?
Or could I open the laptop myself and check the connection of the hard drive myself ? If so , would that void my warranty ?
And if that isn't the case, could someone send me a link of where exactly the hard drive is in the laptop ?

    Thanks you.

You are fine to open up the bottom of the computer and check the hard drive. If network is last on the boot list and that is what its looking for you might have a bad hard drive. Move the hard drive to first, optical drive to second. Put a Windows disc in the drive and reboot. If it tries to boot from the CD then you're having hard drive problems.

The 100W TDP cards will not work in there as the power components used on the motherboard wont support it. They are designed to handle a max 75W TDP card. While it might work you will shorten the lifespan of the computer by doing so.

It's just oil from your fingers/hands. Clean it off with a wet cloth dampened with a mix of 10% rubbing alcohol and 90% bottled water and it will come right off.

Nah, it's just that the design of the touchpad really is a flaw by itself :) Stupid Clevo for doing that.

It's wiped off before, should wipe off again. Rubbing alcohol seems to be the only thing that does it.

Does anyone have the link guide to open up the laptop to clean it? Or can give me a run down on how to properly clean the fans because I notice the temps are hotter than before and the fan is making alot of noise just trying to place D3. I've had my laptop for about 8 months now

There are 4 screws on the back, if you take them out you will then get access to the fans.

You can probably just blow all of the dust out at that point.

Either way, mine is totally busted all white and shiny, I sweat a lot, and rubbing alcohol made it even shinier and now it is all shiny :D

Does this happen with the internal keyboard? I sounds like a problem with the external you're using. You can also plug that external into another computer and see if it does the same thing. If so you can pretty much assume its the keyboard.
