    There's a detailed howto thread about overlays somewhere on this forum. In alienware section called something like "howto in game cpu and gpu displays" (sry this phone a pain for tabbing or id give a link). You can use either Afterburner or Afterburner+Hwinfo to overlay temps and also stuff like clocks, core % use, Gpu fsb % use, fps etc. Very useful for tinkeres/fiddlers like me :)

    Gpu % use stats would be useful for you to see what's going on in the slowdowns e.g. if gpu % usage isn't 99/100% maybe its CPU bottlenecking or loading (off fragmented HDD?) or something.

    Weird, newer versions of GPU-Z shows my GTX 485M running at 1.03V on load. Older versions shows it running at 1.00V on load.

    No, testing with two GPU-Zs. But no biggy, just a bug i guess. HWMonitor shows 1.00V and 1.03V when overvolted. Wonder what the new GPU-Z shows when overvolted.

    ah well then u have my blessing :p try ebay/amazon and also the marketplace section here on nbr, suggest a slightly higher price than u expect to get in the end and offer the possibility of bargaining through PMs. that should cover the basics :)

    Guys I need some help and info.

    I am planing on repasting my CPU & GPU and would like to know if there is a documentation on this? maybe with pictures etc.
    Notebook was bought May 2011 and I think it needs a repaste.

    1. is it difficult? (have experience from desktop and did it twice on a Dell M1330 laptop).
    2. what paste do you recommend?
    3. any other info I might need :).

    thanks

    first of all: why do u think it needs a repaste? are ur temps higher than when u bought the laptop? if thats the case, make sure that all ur vents and fans are clean and dustfree, cuz thats the no. 1 culprit when dealing with overheating issues :)

    as for the disassembly of the P150HM, its pretty straightforward and this manual gives a nice overview on what to do.

    as to your other questions:

    1. its not difficult at all, just a few screws and the backplate in ur way :)
    2. personally, im using IC Diamond and OCZ Freeze, they both pretty much provide the same results
    3. well, ummm....nothing comes to mind :) ask away if something´s up!

    cheers

    Hi,

    i just have a short question about the "new" 7970M from ATI.
    I own an Clevo P150HM with an GTX 485M.
    Is it possible to upgrade this machine to an 7970M ? Will it work with this card ?
    If it works, where can i get such an upgrade ?
    Is an BIOS Upgrade needet to get it to work ?

    Best regards,

    Manuel

    hey manuel,

    lucky for you, i got the same config (see sig) and im also planning to upgrade to a 7970M :p

    soo, to your questions then...

    1. its not 100% sure if the 7970M will work in the HM series, but chances are good, since the EM series (in which the 7970M HAS been confirmed to work) arent that different.

    2. at the moment, theres just one source for clevo cards, namely eurocom´s ebay shop "upgradeyourlaptop". they dont offer the gpu´s openly, so ull have to send them a message and ask for more infos.

    3. its recommended to have flashed the newest BIOS (1.01.14) and EC (1.00.13) for this model, although there is not going to be any official BIOS support for the 7970M, since the HM series are EOL (end of life).

    some additional info:
    - ive put in an order with eurocom at the end of april, theyre still testing the cards on a large variety of laptop models, including the HM series. once i know more, ill make sure to keep u guys updated (thinking about making a HowTo thread for installation, drivers, benchmarks, OCing, etc.)

    - the 485M heatsink and x bracket is NOT compatible with the 7970M, but the 6970M/6990M´s are. in any way, id recommend ordering the 7970M including the heatsink and x bracket from eurocom, that way u can be sure that its compatible

    - pricing by eurocom (as of beginning of may):
    gpu = 520 USD
    heatsink = 75 USD
    x bracket = 25 USD
    ICD 7 = 10 USD
    shipping (to germany, in my case) = 69 USD

    thats it so far. as i said, ill keep u guys updated once i know more, but im sure that other HM owners will do the same, depending whos gonna get his card first :p

    cheers

    Jay, thanks for the update, let us know how it goes with the 7970m. I have been very busy for many months, but now have a little time on my hands, and well, once you get bored, you need to mod. I will be following this. Again, thanks.

    Well, I guess after 1 year a repaste should be ok, right? I think by repasting it temps would go a little bit more down.
    My temps are very good even right now... I have cut the bottom of the case. Now cooler and heatsinks are directly exposed to the fans of a Coolermaster U3 :).

    well, normally the thermal paste doesnt really degrade over time, unless ure running an XM cpu OCed to 4Ghz+,in that case ud have to repaste like once a month :p otherwise,as i mentioned before, the major culprit in high temps is dust clogging the vents and fans.its recommended to clean those once every 6-12 months, depending on the "dustiness" of ur sorroundings ;)
    sooo, unless ure gonna use a higher quality paste than u have right now or correct a bad paste job u wont see any significant drop in temps by doing that (especially if what u say is true and ur temps are already awesome anyways ^^ )

    my ideal temps are as follows:
    idle
    gpu = 37-42 C
    cpu = 40-50C

    max load (furmark/prime95)
    gpu = 81C (OCed)
    cpu = 70ish

    once they go higher than that, i know its time for the next dustclean ^^

    While on battery, external speakers work fine.

    I plug in the AC adapter and I get so much noise/static/interference it's ridiculous. Is there a shielding/grounding issue with the headphone jack?

    not in general, no, but the headphone jack of the p150hm isnt really known for its high quality output signal :p id ask ur reseller for some advice on this issue, maybe its really just some faulty cable insulation.

    Hi guys,

    Just wondering if anyone has run into graphic card issues with the gtx 460/485m. I have occasional crashes randomly, worsened with flash players. However I tried to upgrade my graphics drivers recently (from 285.62) firstly to the geforce website to 296.10 that unexpectedly crashed whilst installing and caused lovely green pixels on the screen before the BSOD.

    Then I tried the modded drivers 301.24 with modded inf drivers to the exact same result. Is there problems with these graphics card and certain drivers?

    I have had random crashes due to the graphic cards for both my P150HM and my wife's Asus G53sw with these graphics card since we bought them last year. We sent my wife's back to get fixed to no avail. It still does it.

    hm, sounds like either a faulty gpu or mobo to me. what exactly did they fix? aside from that, im surprised that ud need a modded inf for the 301.xx drivers? they just install without a hitch in stock config with the 4xxM series gpus.

    Yeah actually it seems there may be some driver issues. Or at least that's what I've heard. I haven't heard of any problems regarding flash but there has been problems with the computer going to sleep or waking up from sleep. However, with the funky pixels, jaybee may be correct with the gpu being faulty.

    hey guys and gals, I'm looking for a converter, dvi from lappy to component hd on tv, my tv doesn't have hdmi, but it's 1080i. most of what i could find were single cables, one with a dvi connector and one with the component connections, for incredibly cheap, doesn't seem right to me, like there isn't a true conversion or something. I've got the ati 6990m video card if it makes a difference. Also my tv has s .- video input, but my understanding is that this is a degradation of viewing quality. THX! for the help :)

    or if there is a better, cheaper whatever way to convert the hdmi on the lap to the component on the tv.... let me know

    Dear johnnyman27,

    we have HM models scheduled for testing this coming week, so far we focused on current EM models and Alienware M15x, M17x and M18x

    Sorry for delays but this is very time consuming process, we need to verify that VBIOS/Drivers etc work correctly model by model

    Turned out that the power cable for the GPU fan was loose, and the computer shut down when trying to start this fan.

    Can you drop a 7970 in these things?
    Might want to make an upgrade once they come out, my 580M GTX is great and I really shouldn't but I cannot help myself, it's like crack to me and always have the urge to have more power.
    Just wondering if it's a straight out swap?
    I should just probably wait and get a new laptop in a year or 2 but if I can upgrade now it should suppress those urges, for a little while anyway ;)

    You can install a 2960XM and they are available on EBay as for GPU I'm trying to figure that out myself, I'm hoping AMD 7970 works.

    yup, 2960xm is the best cpu altho its not worth it on the 150hm since u cant make use of the unlocked multipliers.so imho 2860qm would be the fastest cpu to buy without having to get a bank loan first :p hopes for the compatibility of the 7970m gpu are very high indeed, since the new em series deff support them and they arent really that much different from our model ;) besides,if a m15x can handle that beast then the 150hm should too!

    A question for fellow owners. I've had my NP8150 for about 2 months now, buying it just a day or two before it was discontinued on Xotic. So far it's been doing great. I went with primarily the stock components, with the basics as follows:

    i7-2670QM
    8 GB, DDR3-1333
    Radeon HD 6990
    Super Clear Matte-Type Screen; I didn't opt for the 95% gamut option
    500 GB, 7200 RPM HDD
    Blu-Ray combo drive
    3-year parts/labor warranty

    My question is, has anyone else experienced a somewhat "noisy" screen? It's fairly subtle, but is most pronounced when rendering darker colors. For instance, in a fairly dark room, with my screen brightness turned to maximum, the following image (which is a solid dark grey: RGB 14,14,14) has a noticeable dynamic noise component when viewed from about 12" away or closer: http://i.imgur.com/NRp9p.png. The noise appears at pixel level in luminosity, and is homogeneous across the entire panel. I'm running the latest Catalyst drivers, and the noise has been consistent across about 3 releases (ever since I started using the laptop).

    I've never experienced a visible amount of noise in the panels of either of my previous laptops (Lenovo Z60m, Gateway P-7805u @1200p), and I'm wondering if it's a common issue with TN panels, or something out of the ordinary. I imagine the eye is more sensitive to deviations in light level when dealing with dark colors, it was just a surprise to observe it for the first time on my brand new laptop.

    Also, is the internal connection to the monitor analog or digital? I'm wondering if the issue originates from a less-than-ideal ADC process somewhere, or is just a physical property of panel.

    Thanks.

    hi guys,

    I'm planning on upgrade my ram ammount, but my sager came with 2 samsung's modules and it's really hard to find samsung's ram where I live.
    This is what I've found to buy around here (not buying from newegg...)
    Newegg.com - CORSAIR 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 Laptop Memory Model CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9
    So... wil I have any problem (compatibility, speed, etc) adding corsair or any other brand modules?
    I'd really appreciate some help here.

    Thanks in advance. =]

    You shouldn't have any issues so long as you make sure you get the PnP and not the XMP memory. Also, just make sure the frequency and timing matches the memory currently in your system (1333Mhz, 9-9-9-24 timing) just as an example.
    XMP= Xtreme Memory Profile. This is only for systems that allow users to change the timing and frequency of the memory.

    In your case and because 1333Mhz is usually the standard for memory that should be fine.

    Thank you very much Heihachi_1337.

    Just one last thing... I also found kingston modules and they are 1333mhz, 9-9-9-24 like my sumsung's and the corsair's I was planning to buy.
    Which one is better? or they are similar and I should buy the cheapest?

    Thanks again =]

    All three brands are quite good. Go for the one that is the cheapest.

    The Kingston HyperX PnP memory is the best and has the lowest latency.

    No word on 7970M or GTX675M/660m compatibility yet?

    675M - works, just that no GPU ID is shown
    7970M - so far not compatible, hoping for either an official or unofficial BIOS update / tweak / hack to change that
    660M - unknown as of yet

    Hey, there i guys i am planing to put new thermal paste on both, cpu and gpu. Can someone prompt me for the best thermal paste for p150hm. Also any advice on doing so? is it easy? I am going to follow the official guide and youtube guidance on doing so. Is there any tricky part in the process i should take care about? Something last, is there anywhere to buy new fans for my gpu and cpu? I am asking because i have read from the official guide when cleaning is best to block you fans from rotating as this might brake them from generating electricity. I cleaned my fans with a hoover and let the vacuum suck air from both of my fans, rotating freely. I think i have reduced their performance. Am i getting paranoid or could this happen for real?

    Applying thermal paste is a relatively easy task. You will get several different opinions on which one is "the best" thermal paste. I've nearly always used Arctic Silver 5 (referred to as AS5 by some) but I have also used IC Diamond as well. You should get great results with either.

    Be sure to remove all of the old thermal paste before applying the new stuff. You can use either rubbing alcohol or the Arctic Silver thermal paste remover (sold at newegg.com and some other places I'm sure) and a lint-free cloth when removing the old paste. Don't use Q-tips as they leave behind cotton threads and that could mess up your cooling.

    we use the dot method (or rather a long, thin application) of thermal paste without spreading it out (risk of air pockets, uneven spread, etc.) then just install your heatsink on top and tighten it down.
    Another good article for thermal paste application can be found here Maximum PC | How-To: Properly Apply Thermal Paste and Install a CPU

    Guys I started having some minor issues with my power brick...
    Since today it makes some funny sounds (buzzing). It happens randomly but pretty often.
    Yesterday I have bought a new external monitor which is connected through DVI to the laptop... this is the only change I made since more than 1 year.

    Any ideas as to why this is happening?

    Thanks!
