I hear you there.... my laptop has already blown out a couple fuses in my vehicle on a long trip to Florida before I got smart and pulled off of 2 12v sockets on different circuits to power my inverter. :D

Hi, I bought it in europe but essentially is a Clevo p170hm

If you want to install 4 modulti 4gb of RAM, can i do?

I now have 8GB (2x4GB) and are placed just below the video card.
Where are the other 2 modules? They are easy to reach? There is a guide to get the other 2 modules?

This model should be capable of supporting 4 DDR3 memory modules. You will find 2 slots under the keyboard and the other 2 located under the bottom panel near your CPU.

To access the slots under the keyboard, you should be able to just pry the top panel off (it is snapped into place). This top panel should have your power button and some of the status lights on it.
After the top panel is removed, there should be 5 screws holding your keyboard in place.
Be careful when you remove the keyboard as to not damage the delicate ribbon cable.
After the keyboard is moved out of the way, you should be able to access the memory modules underneath.

I'm thinking of adding a second HDD to my P170hm, Any suggestions on which ones to get, I've already got a M4 crucial (128gb) as a primary so I'm looking for a storage drive for music and games. I know how to physically instal the HDD but how do you get it to work? does it just work like that or do i have to install a driver?

You can use any 2.5" HDD that you want, so long as it's 9.5mm or smaller in form factor. There are larger 12.5mm 2.5" drives in higher capacities, but they typically will not fit without modding.

If you already know how to physically install it in the second bay (under the optical drive), then there's not much more to know. When Windows starts up, go to start > right click Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management. Right click on your new drive to format it, then assign it a drive letter.

There's no software needed to get it up and running after that, it should just show up automatically in My Computer.

Ok installed the HDD and formated it but When I tried to instal mass effect 3 on the secondary it says that it is unable to do so. Is there a special file or destination I have to make on the Secondary HDD??

Hey guys, im trying to update my processor driver but i can't seem to find the correct one, i have this one : Intel Core i7 - 2720QM 2.20 - 3.30 Ghz.

    Can anyone help me please?

I keep having serious framedrops in games i play, im not sure why so im hoping a driver update fixes the problem.

With my system setup i shouldn't have any framedrops in the game im playing.

There is no "processor driver" to upgrade.

Try running HWMonitor while you game, to see if your machine is overheating.

those temps are really high for your cpu, try cleaning the vents and repasting the tim.

also do you press fn+1 when you play your games to set the fan to high mode?

every time you play any intense 3d games, or heavy processing it's best to turn on the fan.

one of the reasons i bought a sager is because of how easy it is to clean and repaste the Tim.

pretty sure you could have your reseller do it as well however it won't justify the cost of shipping it back and forth for something do simple.

there are guides floating around here somewhere, sorry i can't pull the links since I'm just replying from my mobile.

If I open up the bottom to clean the vents with compressed air, will I void the warranty?

NOPE! You will not void the warranty by doing something so simple and common as preventative maintenance.

It might work, but it could do more harm than good. Doing it that way has a good chance of just pushing the dust further into the system. You should really unscrew the bottom panel and blow the dust out of the system from there.

Nothing I am aware of, but it really is a very straight forward procedure. Just remove the screws retaining the large bottom plate and remove that large panel that is covering your CPU and GPU.

Hold the compressed air upright and don't shake it and just blow out your fans and heatsinks. That's all there really is to it. :)

Also, you might want to remove your battery and disconnect your AC adapter when you do it. ;)

Well these are my new temps after cleaning out the dust covered vents (which was very easy to do).

There was a ton of dust covering the vents.

Don't use Furmark as a representative sample for testing temperatures and performance. It's designed to toast your card, not to benchmark it. You shouldn't be getting temperatures anywhere near that high on anything but Furmark. Games in general should push temps over 90C.

I was thinking about getting a 6990m to replace/use as a more powerful gaming card on my machine. are the heatsink designs any different for the 6990m and the 485m?

(please don't ask why I'm wanting to do this.... but I just saw the price drop in those cards and figured I would check out the performance on some games.)

*edit* I don't game in 3d, or do any kind of video editing, so that might be the way I want to go until the 680Ms come out.

Yep, they are different. If you buy a new 6990m as a replacement though, it should usually come bundled with the correct heatsink.

How many variations of heatsinks are there? Is there only 2, or more than that for each version of GPU?

If so, can I expect the heatsink for the 485m and the 680m to be the same?

*edit* Now thinking about just going for a 7970m. it blows the 485m SLI config out of the water!

*edit again...* emailed sager and this is what they said:
    460m-- different heatsink..
470m,485m, and the 580m-- same headsink.
6970, and the 6990-- same heatsink.

I just hope the 7970m is the same one also!

Yeah the 6990M would be a total waste, when the 7970M costs $450 and is nearly as fast as two of them.

I think people with cards like ours should wait, at least until the GTX 680M is revealed.

@Kevin I agree, might as well.

I'm looking for a desktop replacement SLI or Crossfire. But here's the problem.

-GTX 675m is a re-branded GTX 580m but overclock. So unless your a hardcore Nvidia fan or cannot wait, there's no reason to get it compare to the 28nm AMD 7870m which SEEMS to beat it performance-wise and base on past experience probably price-wise as well.

-The AMD 7970m is due out around May. The GTX 680m which is 28nm due in June or July. I don't think there's any info how this gpu would perform yet.

-If your going SLI or Crossfire like myself you need those new Clovo laptop (Successor to the x7000). After having a nice long chat with one of OriginPC sales rep. The laptop is delay (eta JUNE) due to high-failure rate. Since most 3rd party manufacturer use Clovo chassis. Your outta luck. Unless your Alienware.

So I'm outta luck until June/July.

I apologize in advance as I am sure this question has been posted numerous times, but I have been searching for the last 2 hours without any result...

I know it's a bit early to start guessing, but how big a chance is there that the 7970m will fit in the P170HM?
Do anyone know a good site to buy these cards from, except for eBay and sites like that?

Many retailers will have them available to sell individually at some point, but for now there's not guarantee that it will work. It should, but we won't know until it's released and tested.

Unfortunately no, they aren't backwards compatible. The keyboard is a different physical form factor and requires a power connection on the motherboard that isn't there. Plus the EC won't be able to understand it even if you supplied power, so the backlight wouldn't work.

    Hey guys,

I've just opened a new thread, guess it was not necessary. Well hope maybe one of you can help me a sec.

    (original post)

Sorry but I need some help. I proudly own an P170HM since last year already with a M4 256GB SSD. But as I like to have a lot of things installed and games are starting to be 10GB and up I need more SSD space.

    Which is your recommendation?

1-Get an Intel 520 240 only for games or use it for the system? And use my M4 just for games? (as the M4 has very low 4K readings that's the M4 weak point right?)

2-Get another M4 256 and turn it into RAID 0? (I've been told that the 4k readings will be the same for RAID 0 and I'll only get a benefit for very large archive readings.. )

3-Last one which would be the higher frequency if I get a 16GB RAM kit for the P170HM... 1866 or 1600? Kingston or Corsair Vengeance?

Thank you if you can explain me better and help me to decide!

    P170HM - i7 2720 - B173HW01 V.5 Matte - 485M (7970M near future) - 8GB 1333Mhz - M4 256 - WD750 Black

    1. How many game do you really need to have installed at once, on the SSD? What I do, is keep the games on my HDD, then I transfer the one I want to the SSD when I actually get around to wanting to play it.

    2. RAID SSDs is a waste.

    3. I'm not one who believes in crazy RAM, because games don't care what you use.

I have two quick questions, both of which I know are a long shot. Still, I'd really appreciate an informed opinion.

First, has anyone ever tried to lap the heatsinks in their 8170? I was reading about it yesterday and it seems like an intriguing idea, but the examples I came across were mostly desktop heatsinks. I think the principle should be the same for a notebook heatsink, but I don't want to commit to it without being sure it'll work.

Second, is there any way to upgrade the CPU? I have an i7 2720QM, and I was hoping that with the Ivy Bridge release prices would drop on the Sandy Bridge models. This may be a stupid assumption, but I was thinking that if Sager offered different CPUs for the same model than the motherboard should be capable of handling them, unless the 8170s have a different motherboard per option.

Check your owner's manual but I'm pretty sure that the Fn+F2 key turns your LCD backlight off (press a key or use touchpad to turn on).

Hi, I would like an information on temperatures.
I have a 2630qm and 6990m, I would like to know what should stay idle temperatures?

Playing with the fan in auto mode? And full mode?

What could I possibly do to lower the temperatures?

Stick something up the back of the laptop to lift it from lower grounds. Tends to help as the fans have a much easier time cooling and the board/table dock doesn't get all warm and reflect heat back to the laptop.

I was worried when I saw the vga touch the 100 ° C (212.0 F) with fan in auto mode, but when they are in full touch the 85 \ 90 C (185.0/194.0 F).
While still with the CPU fan in full is between 70 and 80 C (158.0/176.0F).

However, the temperatures are too high right?

I also decided to change thermal paste hoping to have lower temperatures

You can add a 3rd hard drive if you sacrifice your optical drive : you just need to buy an OBHD caddy (Optical Bay Hard Drive) which takes the place of your optical drive and in which you place your 3rd hard drive, it will be plugged in a Sata II 3Gbps connection

    I have a problem.
I do like to get sweat stains from the metal where it supports hands.
