    Hi people.
    It's been a while...
Well, I always see someone talking about the B173HW01 V4 AUO 17.3" screen, and I always wanted to see and test one, but unfortunately it's not possible for me.
So any of you guys that has one of this and used a recent Macbook can compare the LCD screens? Is it better or not?

Do anyone know if the 7970m will fit in the P170HM? Seeing as it's been out for a few weeks maybe there's more info on this now?

What about resellers? Do anyone know a trustworthy seller of the 7970m?

People are still trying to figure out if it works in the HM model or not. While it's been out for a week or two, there's still very few people have them as there's a bit of a shortage at the moment. None of the builders or resellers have any of the cards on hand either, so it'll probably be a couple weeks before you can order one. When they finally get some and finish filling their pre-orders, Mythlogic should be able to sell you one.

    Hello,

I noticed my cpu idle temp was really high, so I got some Arcticlean and AS5 to replace the "old" AS5.
When I opened the laptop I noticed a sticker on the heatsink that seems to cover the cpu core (see below).

Should I reapply the sticker or shouldn't it have been there in the first place?
Is the "surface spread" the correct way to apply the new AS5?

    Thx in advance.

Oh my gosh! Who was your reseller? Remove that sticker, reapply your thermal paste, and call them up. That's a major oversight.

Can you go into Safe Mode and roll back to previous drivers?

To get into Safe Mode, press F8 after your BIOS has loaded. Press it repeatedly, don't hold it down.

Well after removing the sticker and applying the AS5 the temp has now dropped to 40-45° C while idle.
Running a quick 3dmark06 improves my result from 13k to 21k and the temp is around 70-75°C.
I'm thinking those temps are normal and will probably improve slightly after a couple of days.

I had contacted the reseller, with my benchmark results earlier and they told me it could've drivers, tweaks, etc...
A 9k result seemed a bit high, but they asked me to test with a few games.
While in games I did get a decent result I did notice high fps drops from time to time.

Anyway, the result is a lot better now. :)

Assuming the person who put the laptop together just forgot about the sticker and it was an honest mistake, I can understand the whole thing.
I'm just happy I noticed it and wasn't afraid to check things out myself.

    Thanks for the help. :)

You're right it was a mistake, and you discovered it before any harm was done.

    Guys just a quick Q.

I have had my p170Hm for well over 9 months now but I have an issue during gaming and my mouse randomly shooting.

Basically, my mouse will randomly shoot when I least expect it, happening more when I press keyboard(w,a,s,d keys) and move mouse left or right but not always. My current mouse is a wired microsoft habu but today I bought another mouse this time a wireless mouse and it too exhibits the exact same problems.

I am starting to speculate the mouse pad so I have ordered a black one. The problematic one has a company logo on it and has multicolors on it.

Could this be the issue? Some have also said to remove mouse drivers from Win 7. Is that just going into device manager and uninstalling mouse driver? Any idea how to do that?

    TIA.

How long has the issue been occurring? Granted you have had your laptop for over 9 months, but has the mouse thing been an issue since you received your laptop, or is it recent?

Could you please clarify what you mean by "shooting"? Is this while you are playing an FPS game or do you mean the cursor sporadically flies over to some random part of the screen?

what mouse pad are you running currently? Is it cloth, acrylic/plastic, or something else?

Contact your seller about purchasing a replacement. You might as well look for the 90% gamut B173HW01 V.4, since you're going to pay similar prices for every screen.

Well.. to clarify when I am playing games I am walking and then bang the gun goes off randomly. I then try to repeat the effect but I can't do it. Then I will walk again and the gun will go off again like I have pressed the left mouse button but I haven't. There is no movement of the screen whatsoever(related to cursor movement). Just the left mouse button goes off randomly which is bad cause it spoils my stealth and alerts enemies in games. Yes playing fps games liek crysis 1,2, sniper elite v2, GTA IV. La Noir. I can't recall it occurring in early days as I wasn't gaming that frequently as nowadays. But yeah all games now will do it just walk left right forward and bang it goes off.

Well the mouse pad I used is an el cheapo color mate acrylic with a company logo on it(has many shades of color and whites and blacks).

I have just ordered a black one as my desktop computer which was my main gaming rig had a black mousepad and I never had issues with it.
I am thinking that the mouse laser strength keeps changing due to multicolor mousepad. This could be causing the random left mouse shooting effect.

I am just curious though have you resellers ever seen an issue like this? Is it common?

    Found the solution.

Had not installed synaptic touchpad drivers. Have done that and all good so far.
Also, discovered this. A way to disable the touchpad whilst using external mouse which is very handy as my left thumb kept touching the touchpad and I think this is what was triggering the left mouse button shooting.

    Goto this link -> http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/to...ics-touchpad-drivers/page__st__40#entry110698
and double click to install into registry.

Then you will have option in synaptic control panel under device settings to have it on/off which is very kewl...

    Enjoy :)

Pressing Fn + F1 also completely disables the touchpad and buttons, until you again press the combo.

    Hi there,
    i got a Clevo P170HM for a while now.
Is it possible to upgrade it with the 3D (120hz) matte display, even when it doesnt have that nvidia IR transmitter like the 3d model? If yes,can i use the display in combination with the transmitter that comes with the glasses from nvidia? Would be really great just to change the screen and plug in the transmitter to get 3D.
If all yes, can you please tell me the part number of that 120hz matte display? Cant find anything about it in the web.

    Also, how about future components, can i just change my 485m to a 680m when it comes out or do i need the new p170 model for it;
will there be IVY Bridge support too on the old one?

A lot of questions at once, sorry, but i think this is the best place to ask for it ;)

I've seen a lot of posts about people planning to put GTX 6**M GPUs in their 8170, but will this work with the current latest BIOS? Will the PSU support it? I can't find a post about someone who ACTUALLY did it so far.

I'm not at an absolute 100%, but I don't think you can use the 120Hz screen without having the P170HM 3D model.

As far as Ivy Bridge, that's a big NO. No laptop which came out before IB released has a compatible chipset.
The GTX 680M is not even released to sellers yet, so there's been no testing done.

Just stay tuned, I guess. So far, the 7970M is working in the NP8170, so that's a positive sign.

    p.s. - welcome to NBR

Thanks; yeah I just noticed the ETA was end of june. I got a bit ahead of myself there :p

Seeing how the 680 seems by all account to use less power than the 7970, I think all we'll need is a non-scumbag bios and I'll be a happy fragger again :)

Another question: is 90c a problem when under load for a GTX560m? I had the diamond thermal paste applied when I ordered (a year ago) but it feels a bit high for me... Vents are cleaned regularly and room temperatures is around 20c

90C for a GTX560M is roughly where it should be.

You could try a repaste to see if that will help any.

when you clean the vents regularly, do you open up your laptop at all and pull the fans to make sure dust hasn't built up on either the fans or the back of the heatsinks?

90°C is a little too high for "just" a 560 - my 460 had about 75°C in idle without 100% fanspeed, 485 now 80 (while in 3D mode).
Try manual 100% settings for your fans while gaming, should solve your problem [FN + 1].
If 90°C with 100% fanspeed -> check your fan, heat sink and / or cooling paste!!! Thats definitly not ok.

2 days ago I decided to clean out my laptop from dust and re-paste it as the CPU was hitting high temps (95C was to highest I saw, but it jumped up there for like half a second) when just playing games.

By just repasting using the "line" method made my load-temp drop to around 65C. Is this normal?
There weren't that much dust blocking the CPU, only for the graphic card.

Also, if I put the CPU under heavy load using prime95 I get a BSOD if I don't put the graphic card on 3D clocks. Is this really normal? The BSOD says it's that atixxx.sys-something (AMD drivers) that's causing the crash.

I have underclocked the card in 2D, but Prime95 should put load on the graphic card, so I don't understand why it happens. No BSODs otherwise so I am not too concerned.

    1. Yeah, it's normal to see drastic drops in temps, after a rep-aste and cleaning.

    2. a - Are you saying your 2D is lower than 100/150? If so, does the BSOD happen with default 2D clocks? b - Have you messed with the voltage?

Oops I mean I have undervoltet the card for the 2D (and also 3D) clocks. Putting the card itself under full load while it runs on the 2D clocks (I have tried stuff like F@H, Furmark and some other stuff) doesn't cause a BSOD, only if I put the CPU under full load with prime95 if the card is running @ 2D. The card itself is not under any load while I run Prime95.

It is probably caused by the 2D clocks and the low voltage, so I will try running it at default tomorrow and run Prime95 for a while. Time for bed soon though :p

My fans / heatsink are completely dust-free. I have re-applied paste (I used Arctic MX-3) and temps are pretty much exactly the same (should be a bit better once it cures). Those temps were NOT with fans at 100%, when at full speed the fans make the temp drop to around 75-80 on load and 55-60 idle.

I guess I'm within the average then.

Can't wait to see if I can manage to stick a 680m in there.

Mine has quite an annoying issue related to the lid. Whenever I close the lid when the computer is in sleep mode. It will crash as soon as I open the lid. The the BIOS refuses to post until I let it powered on for about 5-10 minutes, after a while it will manage to boot to the Windows logo and stay jammed there. A second restart at this point will make it boot normally.

I wish I knew how to fix this... My only clue so far might be the RAM. They issued a statement in december that the 1800mhz ram could cause stability issues with the 8170.

    hi,
do you know if I can put a 3820qm or 3720qm in my Clevo p170hm?
I saw some vendor succeeds, but my no. There is an unofficial bios that allows me to use it without problems?
Instead, for the 7970m? I can mount it without updating the bios? The power saving function will work?

It's 100% impossible to run 3xx0M Ivy Bridge CPUs in this model, because of the incompatible chipset.

About the 7970m, you need to contact your vendor, or go directly through Sager.

I have the below described NP8170 which I purchased 03-11-2011. I want to upgrade/replace my current video card.

What would be a good upgrade card that would work ?

    Current System Specs

    NP8170
    Model: 170mx
    ICore 7 272 QM 2.2 GhZ
    8 MB Ram
Current Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX460

    Thx
    Steve

You'll need to check directly with Sager, to determine which motherboard configuration you have.

I have a 6990m, which program do you recommend to increase the frequencies beyond 740 \ 1000?

I personally use ATi Tray Tool (not ATi Tool) which is very very complete but not very easy to use at first IMO.

I use it to undervolt and overclock my HD6970M.

If you want to try it I can give you some link I used to learn to use this tool.

Yes please, sand me the link.

    Thanks

There is a thread in this forum where we talk about overclocking 6990m?

Sapphire TriXX is by far the easiest.

Thanks for the replies. At this point I have another question for you. Can I install in my notebook the backlit keyboard of Clevo p170em?
Where can I buy it in europe?

When the question of replacing the current keyboard with the then-rumored-for-the-next-model backlit keyboard would come up in various posts, the answer has always been "NO".....

I am hoping an enterprising modder can conjure a way to retrofit the backlit keyboard. It was the only thing on my wish list that could not be ordered when I purchased mine.

Modders, modders ?? Anyone?? (with aplogies to Ben Stein's character in Ferris Buellers Day Off !!)

I have an NP8170-S1 but the webcam is no longer working. I'm not sure what I did. When I double-click the BisonCap exe I get the message "Please turn on the camera power by pressing Fn+F10 or clicking the 'Camera On' icon in the popup menu. I don't see a menu anywhere as the program hasn't started but pressing Fn+F10 doesn't do anything.

I also have "ChiconyCam" installed. I'm not sure why there are two. Anyway, the same message when trying to start it's executable.

I went to sagernotebook.com but there are no drivers listed for webcams for the 8170.

Any ideas on what else I could try?

    Thanks.
