I'm back to close the loop on this problem.

I RMA'd the computer and sent it on a spring vacation driving up and down the west coast of the USA in the back of a UPS truck! I now have the computer back and the graphics card is no longer shutting off the computer when running modern 3D games. I have an RTX demo that wouldn't even get past the loading screen that now runs beautifully!

I still don't know what was wrong, but now it's fixed. Although the process was long, it was easy enough to get this fixed without question, so I'm a happy customer once again.

Of course, the game I was trying to play with my wife isn't going to work, as she's already past level 50....

    9900k RTX2080 model

I've had a eureka moment when testing the core multipliers and I think I have managed to figure out some of the voodoo behind it.
I was up to 3 am last night doing these tests and I'm having to summarise by memory at the moment because it still needs a bit more tweaking.

In order to get a single thread stress test to get the cpu to run at 5GHz for a single thread, I had to set the first 6 out of 8 cores to x50. I assume this is because the single thread does not always live on the same core and it seems to get moved around to keep the temps down on each individual package.

In order to test this, I set all multipliers down to 36 and ran a single threaded stress test. I incremented each core up to x50 one by one and the speed gradually started to increase till the sweet spot of 6 cores at 50x.

So at this point, I had my multipliers as so:

    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x36
    x36

unless I had the -80mV undervolt the single thread could not reach the 5Ghz without current throttling. So my single threaded stress was stable and non-throttling.

I then started incrementing the thread count until the frequency dropped back down to 3.6Ghz to where I would increase the multiplier up to where I started getting throttling.

At a certain point I had my multipliers as such:

    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x46
    x36

and I booted up anthem and the game was running on all cores at 3.6Ghz at around 80C and my framerates were in the 70-100 region instead of the 50-60 when all cores were running at 4.2Ghz throttling.

After increasing all cores using the previously described method I finally ended on

    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x46
    x43

    Some observations:

Only the last three multipliers actually make any noticeable changes.

Anything over 8 threads is controlled by the last multiplier.

The laptops idle clock speed under no load will be at the 8th multiplier

When running XTU's benchmark I was still getting some throttling and the last multiplier of x43 had the best CPU only performance for 8+ threads, it's still too hot for gaming because once the GPU is on it will start getting hotter.

I was feeling brave since the single thread stress tests weren't near any throttling and I managed to get a single thread to overclock peaking around 5.1-2GHz if setting the first 6 multipliers to x52,

x53 caused an immediate reboot and I figured I would leave it alone at x50 for now while I get the rest of it stable.

I feel like this is pretty significant information as I haven't read anything like this online. If anyone else is brave enough to test their own CPU concerning the multipliers and fixed thread stress tests to confirm my findings I would deeply appreciate.

You set the higher active core counts so yes the 4 core is now 50 so up to 4 active cores when the others are idle will reach that turbo.

When stress testing on a single thread it will never reach clock at 5Ghz clock even if you have your multipliers set at:

    x50
    x36
    x36
    x36
    x36
    x36
    x36
    x36

XTU even reports only 1 core is active.

    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x50
    x36
    x36

is the first point where a single threaded stress test will get anywhere near to 5GHz

I invite others to test this and share their results.

Memory did randomly die in some game. Reduced refresh interval slightly, now they don't. Performance did not suffer.

Now another thing bothers me enough to ask.
My CPU exhaust is barely warm at all times, even if CPU is at 80 degrees. GPU exhaust on other hand is almost as hot as GPU itself.
With all previous laptops, i got used to exhaust on both chips being hot, and cool air from 80 degree chip guaranteed bad thermal contact. This one however does not overheat, i think 80 degrees for 4,7 ghs i5-9600k under rendering load in a laptop is totally not bad.
So question is, is it some desktop CPU thermal magic and how it's supposed to be, or I can improve this for better temps/clocks?

There is some lottery as to how warped your heatsink is.

Paired with a concave intel IHS is bad news for everyone involved, especially if you use something like liquid metal, where any gap is pretty much guarantees game over when it comes to thermal transfer.

There are several things you could try as to lower the temps, easiest being using lower voltage. For a more hands on approach, you can always go the delidding route using LM between ihs and the cpu, lapping the ihs. Even using a 1mm copper shim to even out the contact areas.
Making sure that the backcover does not impede the airflow to the fans by excessive dust filters. And having a small standoff, like a book, under the laptop for it to breathe.

    @nabutso
    Easy.

    Download EFI Shell:
    https://www.mysn.de/driver/5_Sonstiges/Tools/Shell_for_EFI_Flash.zip

    Unpack to USB drive
Unpack EC/BIOS folders to USB drive

Get familiar with the folder structure on your USB drive
Each update (EC and BIOS) has an ".NSH" file, that you will need to run under EFI shell in order to start the procedure.
An NSH file in EFI is the same as a BAT (Batch) file in DOS.

Boot from USB drive into EFI Shell
Browse to the file system which contains the EFI shell via fs0: fs1: fs2: fs3: or fs4: (etc.)
With the "cd" command, browse to the BIOS folder on the USB Drive
    Execute the appropriate NSH file.

If you want to see a really long and convulated video to guide you through this process, check this out.

    Cheers,
    XMG|Tom

Turning off HT has been brutal for a lot of benchmark scores, but temps -are- noticeably lower. I didn't get as much heat headroom as I was expecting however when running things on many threads, though.

That being said, I think I'll stick with HT on for the time being.

I do undervolt but it's still tough with a 9900k to not thermal throttle.

    Hi guys,
LPC-Digital offers this model with 9900K + 2080 combo but with only 1x330W adapter because they say it's enough. Is it safe to purchase 1x780W adapter to use instead? Will I be risking frying my new laptop?

The power adapter is a bit overkill and has a fan vs the silent 330W. Why not get a power meter and test it to see if you need more before purchasing?

It's because on HID website, they say I need either (2x330W adapters + converter box) or (1x780W adapter) for 9900K+2080, while other combos are recommended with 1x330W adapter. I'm just trying to understand why LPC and HID recommend different setups, and if such difference affect performance.

    Hello!
    I have a p775tm with rtx 2080 and 8700k.
I am planning to swap the CPU with a delidded 9900k.

I currently only have 1x 330W, would this be enough or with a higher adapter it would have slightly better performance ?

Does the DC input or the EC and default Clevo BIOS have a power limit ?
Would be pointless to get a better adapter if the DC input or BIOS/EC does notoallow higher intake than 330W.

780W adapter is a bit overkill in my opinion and it is a bit overpriced aswell.

I am planning to have a 600W adapter custom made with this main part:

It has an active fan aswell as the 780W eurocom version but it is just 600W instead of 780W. I believe 600W would be way enough and the price is much better, would come down to around $250.

    What do you think ?
    Would it worth it?
Does the motherboard/DC input/bios allow higher input and would I benefit from it, would the vga score higher due to the higher power ?

PS: $250 is with 27% local tax, if I could have one made in the USA it would be around $200...

Stock P7 Clevo BIOS/EC firmware can not make actual use of more than 330W.
In the PremaMod we have removed that limit, because we have removed the throttle, so that you can use a dual 330W or a higher capacity single PSU for overclocking.

For a regular use scenario 330W is enough.

From my experience, with the p775tm1 and 9900k w/ a modded 1080, is that thermals become a real threat when you push this chassis above 4.8 with that chip.
I was able to bench at 4.9 with stock bios, and temps were getting spicy hot even then (delidded, w copper ihs and LM) with a single 330w brick.

I'd imagine the unified heatsink helps to mitigate some of that, but for everyday use I don't think you'd benefit much from a 780w brick.
For benching w/ an unlocked system, perhaps. But with stock EC/Bios and cooling, it's doubtful.

hi guys.i have an issue with my p775tm1-g (xmg ultra)
i cant adjust the brightness(missing option in windows)
    im on the latest bios
tried the latest and a few older control center(both self terminates itself after 2 seconds after opening it)
than tried obsidian control station which allows all function + fc keys properly except brightness
i have read in other topics that is is related to fastboot(disabling it wont solved it)
and intel graphics drivers, but it seems on this system internal grapichs are disabled if i get it right(no mshybrid option in bios,no intel graphics in device manager and intel graphics installer fails too)

    does anyone know any solution?

    thanks

Overclocking 9900k in this system ?
Lol a delidded [email protected] GHz can go up to 86C even in my desktop with AIO liquid cooler if I start up an avx test like aida64 fpu or linx...

When I put this 9900k into my p775, I am going to downclock it to 4.5 GHz.
Maybe it will not reach it's Max speed, but it will still be way faster than a [email protected] GHz and cooler too.

Depends of the workload, sure. I have mine at 4.8 for daily use, mainly for gaming and other non-production work.

My 330w brick is sufficient for my 9900k at 4.8 with an oc'd 1080, I'm thinking you'd be fine. Your 2080 pulls less power than a 1080.

Could be they swapped it out in which case there would not be much you could do. Maybe see if there is a Vbios update from your reseller.

Did you ask them if the panel was original?

Does the reseller have a driver page? That should be a base set where it can be assumed everything should work if it will.

Anyone have a good monitor calibration/color profile for the Clevo 4K screen? Specifically for those that do photo/video work... Don't want to have to buy a calibrator if I can avoid it. I find after using the computer now for a month, that things are a bit off when viewing stuff on say mobile devices (which is what most people view things on now).

Calibration changes with the environment and as the panel drifts over time.

i ordered the eurocom sky x7c (same as this unit) with a 2080 and 8700k. i went with 8700k as the chips are much thinner, far less metal for the heat to get through. i also got the de-lid and LM with copper IHS upgrade. i will also UV volt it o/c it and use a cooling pad.

yes the 9900k is faster but, in a laptop it will throttle badly. i doubt it would stay at max performance for long?

i thought it best to go with last gen as gaming fps difference is not much anyway, esp as my monitor is capped @ 100hz (omen x35). and that it would run cooler at stock, so with extra mods, an UV, an o/c and the unit on a cooling stand, it would out perform a 9900k in the same chassis and last longer!

unless you lap that 9900k even with a de-lid etc it will still throttle.
