Just to be clear, I was getting "quad core only" from my mythlogic configuration summary:

    System Memory 16GB (4 x 4GB) , PC3-14900, 1866MHz SODIMM Quad Core Processors Only! (Kingston HyperX)

Looking closer at the configuration screen, the 8GB selection says "Quad Core+", but the 16GB selection is missing the "+":

    8GB (4 x 2GB) , PC3-14900, 1866MHz SODIMM Quad Core+ Processors Only! (Kingston HyperX)
    16GB (4 x 4GB) , PC3-14900, 1866MHz SODIMM Quad Core Processors Only! (Kingston HyperX)

So, from the summary page, it really appears to be "only". Typo, or is there some difference between the two?

    Thanks!

    Hey guys, a question:

I am taking the p270wm with:
    - Intel Core i7-3930K (6x 3.2Ghz)
    - CF 7970m (as soon as they are out)
    - 1 SSd for OS and Performancehungry Programms/Games
    - 1 7.200rpm HDD (for Screen Capeturing)
    - 1 5.400rpm HDD (for all the remaining data and gerneral storage)
    - some more..

so i have a question about the life expectancy..
i will use the notebook for about 6h during work (from 7am until 1pm) and then for gaming/video editing for about 6 hours again (2hours brake between) from 3pm until 9pm. - means 12 hours per day!
I will encode Videos all the time (certainly means 100% CPU load on min. 2cores - could possible release the whole workload to all cores [don't know if the programm does support that])

How does this effect the life expectancy? (My main concern is the heat produced under load [?]) some tips to increase it?

and do you know how long a new hdd (Seagate - Momentus XT 7.200rpm) can last.. i may transfer 300gb per day (if not more).

or is buying a desktop which runs 24/7 and just shuts down for updates is the better solutution? .. although i would like to take my work to "work" and back home.

Thank you guys in advance! :D

Nope no difference, they are both HyperX 1866 memory, and will work at 1866Mhz on any of the Non-Xeon Socket 2011 Processors. We fixed the typo a while ago to say Quad Core+

You have three things to worry about:

    1. Heat is going to be your nemesis. Just make sure that you work with the laptop on a solid surface, like a desk. Do not use it on your lap!

    2. Dust. Keep the fan intakes and vents free from dust. Use compressed air and do a thorough cleaning once/month. You can also use Q-tips on the fan blades to further remove dust, although that will take much more time to do.

    3. Fan noise. Encoding video pretty much constantly is going to generate a ton of heat that will have to be dissipated. Because of the heat, the fans will be active at a semi-high level almost all of the time.

    Other stuff you asked:
-This is Clevo; their cooling prowess has no equal.
-You should probably just use 7,200RPM mechanical drives and don't even think of 5,400RPM.
-You should use high-end 2.5" HDDs that can take a ton of punishment. I would look at Western Digital or Hitachi drives. Personally, I only use WD for laptop drives.
-Life expectancy: Depends on you. If you maintain the machine well, take care of it, and don't drop it, then it will live a long life and happily render video 24/7.

    Hope that helps you out.

Note: If you're going to be rendering video, maybe you should wait for the 3D screen option so that you can then have the potential to create Stereoscopic 3D videos? That would be awesome!

    1. Yeah - i'm aware of that - i already have cooling pads :D also i don't plan on using a 15pound notebook on my lap

    2. ok - min. once per month. thank you :)

    3. so is it better to let do 2cores 100% work or all 6 cores (or 5cores) do 50% work/core. ?

Yeah. ok thank you for that tone of information :)
to the 3d screen thingy - i use a 3d ready television at work and at home, so that doesn't pay off. (and i don't do that much 3d work either)

ALRIGHT two sellers showing 3d monitors in the config!!!! YES!!!

BTW any one have any thoughts on 16gb 1866mhz CAS9 vs 32 gb 1600mhz cas10???

I will be doing some video editing and gaming. It will be a tertiary gaming rig to my office and living room computers which will both have x79 and sli or tri sli keplers , but I still want PERFORMANCE!!!! :)

I am just torn between faster ram at 16gb and more ram at a still decent speed!!! ARGHHHHH!!!

For gaming, the difference in amounts of RAM will be basically moot- no mainstream games will use anywhere near 16GB. However, video editing could benefit greatly from the extra RAM. Not just for the application itself, but also because you could use some of that extra RAM to make a RAM disk which would become an ultra fast scratch disk for editing video on (many magnitudes faster than even a fast SSD). The real world performance difference between 1600 and 1866 RAM is about 4%, which is negligible most of the time. Using a RAM disk with extra RAM would make some (normally intensive) drive IO tasks nearly instantaneous though.

In short, depending on your usage, the extra RAM opens up some cool possibilities compared to the negligible increase in frequency with less RAM.

ETA in Europe is 6th of April, add a few days to catalogue and mark the shipments and you get mid April as stated by Sager.

Just pulled the trigger on ordering one of these myself (from Don @Powernotebooks.com). 3930 processor, 32GB RAM, 3x 750GBs HD (main one the hybrid).

Didn't do RAID this time, done it on several machines and for my purposes (90% gaming, 10% productivity related) it just wasn't delivering much performance increase vs the hassle when having to recover a stripe set when an older machine gave out (several older desktops I had were IDE RAID, with all my newer ones SATA this became adaptor hell).

I went with a bit more of a baseline model.
670s in SLI (Got upgraded from 560s for free :D)
And only have one HDD in the beast currently (I've got mucho 2.5" drives at home) I did swap out the ODD for a HDD caddy though. I hate having the ODD tray pop out when I bump that button. Went with 16gb of ram, was originally considering only 8gb and then upgrading but the difference was like 45 bucks, and I couldn'g get 4x4gb for less than that, so I figured I'd just let Myth install it for me.

Isn't "16GB ram@1600MHz" the same as this: "16GB (4x4GB) DDR3/1600 QUAD Channel Memory"? I have this selected in the basic config I ordered from Powernotebooks.

I will never claim to be a hardware expert by any means, but they seem awful similar.

No, the 16GB of RAM is in bigger chip sizes (2x8GB not 4x4GB). This could put you at 32GB within the P270WM. (4x8GB)

Gotcha.... I was thinking about the total rather than the individual RAM sizes.

I plan to upgrade to 32gb at some point and was going to go that route (4x8). I figured I could find a better price at Newegg when the time comes. I didn't go overboard on the HDD's either since I plan to use an SSD that I already have, along with a couple 500gb drives that I already have. These choices alone are saving me nearly $700.00. I also opted out on the operating system and saved another $140.

Upon asking RJTech about their 120Hz customization, I received the following:

    Upon prodding Sager, I received:

I'm inquiring further into RJTech to see if their 120Hz screen is some type of aftermarket screen they install and what time frame I'll be looking at when ordering that option.

[Edit] I'm also putting something in to Clevo to see what the deal is there.

The reason I posted that is because someone asked if it was possible to get 32GB@1600Mhz in P270WM, and Mythlogic said nobody made 8GB sticks @1600 for laptops. I was pointing that out and hoping they would stock it.

Please note that RJTech is not an importer from Clevo. Sager along with Prostar are the ONLY US importers.

Eurocom in Canada is also one.

Most likely ALL dealers in North America gets there notebook barebones and parts from one of the above importers.

Sager has said even today that there is NO ETA for the 3D 120Hz screen for this model. Sorry.

Just bought my first Clevo. i7-3930k, single 675m. I mainly run CPU intensive applications in parallel with gaming, which I prefer not to do at high settings due to the games I play :p

You like them because you probably never had to deal with them before. You never received notebooks with ES components inside, lol. You should research before pulling the trigger. Luckily 90% ppl on these boards well aware and stay away from these guys.

Been lurking awhile - finally registered to post since i'm looking at one of these too.

What is an ES part? Are they bad? Good to know the 3D models are coming soon I may wait a bit longer before pulling the trigger on it.

Also: STOKED for the Baldur's Gate remake - started throwing my money at the screen when they announced it. 2012 is going to be a good year for gaming.

ES - engineering or pre-production samples, used for testing purposes only. ES parts can differ greatly from the final product both in performance and stability. Resellers aren't allowed to sell those. And yet some companies throw them in just to be the first to announce the product. They also start accepting pre-orders sooner and ppl buy...just to realize later on that due to some delays  the shipping dates got pushed to the same date which the rest of the resellers have set long ago (surprised? :)).

And they keep doing that because there are always those who don't research and fall for the trap oblivious to the fact that not only they have to pay a higher premium, but also, they aren't getting it any time sooner and worse yet, they might be getting a dud :(
