thank you! I will take a look.

Dude THANK YOU you're awesome
-
I've got the same model, but don't understand all this "yellow screen" BS. My screen has no tint what-so-ever and is very sharp and bright..
-
It's a sick little laptop. It made for a great replacement (T500). I don't notice any "yellow tint" with my model and the 8770 rocks. I can play Starcraft 2 just fine.
Enjoy the laptop! -
It's the HD4000 driver automatically installed by Windows with a clean install: you need to force uninstall it (windows will crash, it's ok); then, after reboot, restore resolution to max and install the HD4000 driver through Samsung SW Update. Reboot.

Just to be clear, there is NO USA version that has 8870 yet - right? This is all UK/Europe that has it?

Here you go, that's what the tool "read & write utility" says, just click on the EDID button inside. It's a fresh Win8 install.
http://rweverything.com/download/
Also clicking on "EC" and changing register 192 (upper left corner), allows to control fan speed. Entering "4E" manually boosts up fan instantly. Fan control would be easy if I could find out how to disable auto mode to not owerwrite manual entries. A picture of super/io chip on mainboard would be nice, so I could check the manual somewhere and see how disabling auto mode is done. Creatin a fan controll tool would be a piece of cake then.

Thank you!

I think the people complaining about the screen are way overstating the issue. I notice a slight yellow tint and slight graininess but they in no way detract from my enjoyment of this beautiful screen. I'm pretty sure there's no way any of these complainers owned the previous Chronos model with 1600x900 res, matte screen, and about a 3 degree viewing angle. This screen is gorgeous. I do not understand how anyone could be unhappy with it.
-
+1. This screen is great and of very good quality. I have never seen a yellow tint or ghosting. You'll only see 'grainyness' when you display a white background and put your eyes really close. I was in a store a week ago and looked at 20+ laptop screens and none could compete. (A rmbp wasn't there, rugular mbp's screens looked like rubbish compared to the chronos). Some where a little brighter though. But I prefer the matte coating over a litlle bit more brightness personally.
-
A lot of people were also thrown off by the 125% auto-zoom that the computer ships with. I know I was for a while (and even so, I thought the screen was super sharp!)
prank - have you considered putting a matte screen protector or something on top of the display? -
Yeah that made a huge difference for me too.
I already have a matte screen

My Linux experience has been satisfactory, but not perfect. This is on Linux Mint 14 Nadia.
I haven't tried to get the Radeon HD8770M working at all. I'm just using the internal video card and it has been working fine. I don't do any 3D stuff under linux. Normal desktop effects seem to be working fine.
Network (wired and wireless) work fine. Sound works fine through the built-in speakers. I haven't tried wired headphones. Bluetooth audio works fine.
Screen brightness is working but doesn't adjust automatically. Using Fn+F2/F3 works to adjust the brightness.
I was happily surprised that the backlit keyboard does work using the ambient light sensor (to the right of the web cam). However I haven't had any luck adjusting the backlight brightness using Fn+F9/F10. It just ignores me. Also, as people have noticed on Windows, the backlight will only come on in a dark room you can't force it to turn on.
The track pad doesn't recognize gestures at all, e.g. scrolling or pinch to zoom. It does recognize a single finger for moving the mouse pointer, as well as left click and right click (i.e. the basic functions work fine). I always use an external mouse, so I haven't spent any time trying to get this working.
The big problem for me relates to the touch screen. It does work and it recognizes touches. I can drag windows around with my finger and tap on buttons & menus, and that's cool. The problem is that once I touch the screen, I'm no longer able to double-click anything! It won't work to double-tap on the screen, or to double-click the track pad, or even to double-click with my external mouse. The only way to fix it is to log out and log back in. So, for the time being, I avoid using the touch screen. I haven't researched a solution for this either, but I hope there will be a fix released as touch screens become more popular.
Overall, the laptop is very usable and I like it a lot. I didn't expect all the hardware to work perfectly under Linux, and the things that don't work aren't deal breakers for me. Hopefully I can get it all working once I have time to research a bit. -
install samsung-tools and you will have manual fan control +rest of the fn keys working
-
ah, oops! why did i have it in my head you had the glossy touch screen. silly me, too much reading going on here
-
Cool, thanks! I'll check it out.

Hi all
Sadly, I'll be returning my BB model tonight :-(. Nothing wrong with the laptop but I just realized that I prefer console gaming more (albeit the gfx). I got Bioshock Infinite (Xbox) from my friend last night and been playing that on my projector screen so realized the Samsung was overkill for my needs.
I might pick up a used MacBook 13" for the mobility factor.
But even at that, I highly highly recommend the Chronos! Fantastic laptop and one that combines the features of a ultrabook and the power of a gaming laptop into one! -
I have a new, and strange problem on my NP780Z5E S01UK (8870 GPU, installed SSD but transferred recovery image over) - I've not changed any settings, installed any drivers or anything - but my Switchable graphics setting on the desktop right-click and control panel have vanished. This was working perfectly a couple of days ago - today, nothing!
Anyone else come across this?
EDIT: A Pain in the ..., but this was fixed with a re-install of the AMD Drivers by downloading the setup file through SW Update. Hopefully this won't be a too regular occurrence! -
Does Silent Mode still work in linux?

This is what I wanted to ask. Is there no way to turn off the automatical adjustion of the backlighting? I found it for the screen (which was driving my crazy before since it always adjusted too dark for me) but haven't been able to also turn it off for the backlight of the keyboard.
Is this really a "feature" by Samsung which can't be turned off? -
You can't replace a multimedia computer with a game console. Why get an expensive Macbook when there's the Series 7 Ultra?
-
The automatic brightness thing (both for keyboard and screen) is getting pretty rediculous to me. It actually limits the maximum brightness! You can't get your screen as bright when you cover the light sensor as when you expose it to light. That's just stupid IMO.
-
Are you able to disable the automatic (screen) brightness like others here have done ?
(I think I read that there were 3 different places to change the settings to accomplish this).
This way, you should be able to manually control the brightness of the (screen) at all times.
If you do that, and then you cover the light sensor, the only thing that should fluctuate is the brightness (or on/off) status of the (keyboard) brightness.
In this scenario, the brightness of the screen should not change even if you cover up the light sensor.
Can you test this to see if it does, indeed work this way ?
If it does, then at least that's half of the battle. -
MAN I'm very close to getting this laptop running the way I want it to run. It's been a month since my purchase and although I'm extremely happy with this laptop, I've never spent this much time and effort in preparing a laptop for proper use after taking it out of the box. From something simple like learning where to change settings to figuring out how to get the 8770 running to installing the SSD, this forum and the other giant forum has been a godsend.
Okay so my last issue is slow web-browsing.
Anyone have issues with web browsing? My internet browser (IE and Chrome so far) has trouble opening pages. It either:
1. Loads slow
2. Loads an unformatted version of the web page.
3. Fails to load the page.
I've heard other Samsung laptops have this issue, but can't find any solutions. Anybody have this issue? Anyone know any solutions? -
Do you all have the ability to swipe down from the top of the touch pad and bring up the recent apps menu? I have the function enabled in the settings and the most recent drivers per the device manager. When I press the win key + tab the menu will appear on the left, but nothing from the top as described in the settings. Any suggestions?
-
Have you tried disabling IntelliMemory?
-
Ok so Im having a problem where the computer occasionally fails to connect to wireless. Something about being unable to connect to the default gateway. Any suggestions?
-
Yup, disabled.
-
I do. It's a windows 8 bug. Not samsung's.
Go to history (ctrl+h) and click delete browser history. Select delete "from the beginning of time". You only need to delete browser history and cache. So check those 2 and click delete. This fixed it for me, although I have to repeat it every now and then.
I'll put it in the FAQ. Next chrome update will probably resolve this. -
Guys, two questions:
1. About NP780Z5E-S01UB panel: is the touch screen panel glare or not? Any glass cover in case of glare panel or it's just a bare film?
Which panel's quality is better? In my opinion the gloss one should be brighter? Any reviews?
2. Seems that Best Buy version has 1GB of VRAM. Is it true and there should be another version with 2GB of VRAM?
Thank you! -
1. I don't own that version but I do know it's glossy.
2. The 8870m version will definitely have 2GB of VRAM. It's not out yet though. -
Just got my Chronnos (Bestbuy version). This thing a beaaast. There's no comparison to my old MSI GX620
-
EDIT: Not out in the US.
Real edit: I meant to click edit but clicked reply instead
sorry
-
It's not just Chrome. FireFox does this as well. Not sure what Windows 8 did to the caching, but it completely strips some websites of coding. It's utterly ridiculous, but not Samsung's fault
(well...except they loaded Windows 8 to begin with!)
-
Windows 8 is one crazy OS and there are still a lot of bugs to be fixed. thanks for the info
EDIT: Do you use firefox? could you tell me how you fixed it so I can put it in the FAQ? -
In the UK,FR,IT,etc the model with the 8870m is called the np770z5e-s01uk/fr/it/etc. I'm curious what the US model will be called and even if it will exist as currently the np770z5e-s01ub only has the 8770m. Seeing that it has the same naming scheme I'm thinking that this might be it, as in there will be no higher end model in the US. Anyone have any thoughts?
-
Samsung has said many times that a version with an 8870m and 16gb of ram is coming to the US and Canada
-
I do use FF, but it's the same fix as Chrome. Delete cache, hope it doesn't crop up again for a while. It's maddening, but we're stuck until MSFT fixes a cache loading problem in Windows.
-
Source? I haven't come across any samsung communication saying this. Only speculation due to their showing of the product at CES.
-
They said that it was coming to Canada and the US at CES.
Like confirmed it -
I'm thinking it would be np770z5e-s02ub
-
So I'm looking to get the Best Buy version very soon don't need the 2gb video card since I dont game so no reason to wait.
My question is what is the best way to get this thing off to the best start. I don't mean swap out the HDD for SDD immediately I may do that in time if I need it.
What I'm refering to is battery break-in. Do I start up, let battery die and plug in for best results in the long run or start plugged in and dont unplug until full charge? Also wasn't there a problem with the HD4000 graphics with shutting the screen and the proper way to solve this is installing the updates properly. I believe its Microsoft updates then SW updates. Is this correct? Of course I know immediate intellimemory removal.
Please give me any other tricks to gettting off on the right foot with this thing besides immediate SSD Swap.
Thank you -
Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that matters anymore with these modern batteries. If you want this battery to live longer I suggest you turn on the battery life extender function in samsung settings.
I didn't have any problems with te intel HD4000 drivers, if you do just uninstall them in device manager and reinstall them through SW update.
What you definitely must not forget is turning your display size down from 125% to 100%. Your screen will look much sharper. -
spybenj: I'm not saying it won't come, but word of mouth does not constitute a confirmation. I am looking for somewhere where a samsung employee is quoted as saying explicitly the 8870m is coming to the US/Canada. I don't think people expected to see the 8770m land in the US first and not the 8870m.
-
Read any of Samsung US or Canada's press releases, they all say it
-
Samsung had a part of their booth dedicated to the series 7 chronos with 16gb of RAM and the 8870m at CES 2013. If that isn't a confirmation coming from samsung employees for you then I don't know what you would actually believe.
-
Here's the press release: Samsung Unveils Enhanced Series 7 Chronos and New Ultrabooks at CES 2013 | Business Wire
It mentions that models with the 8870m will be available (as they are now in Europe) but says nothing specific about whether they are hitting north america. Don't get me wrong guys, I would love to see it in North America but it hasn't been confirmed. The reason I am skeptical as I have said is that the us model new unit (with the exact same naming scheme as abroad) only has the 8770m. So we'll have to wait and see...
I think we all want to see this laptop. But don't fool yourself and think that it has been 100% confirmed. -
It has been
A Samsung rep said "the series 7 chronos with the 8870m and 16gb of ram is coming out in Canada in the match April time frame" -
Someone has said, on Italian forum, that HDD screws are covered with a blues paint, maybe is a warranty seal, others owners have noticed this blue paint on HDD screws, obviously I'm talking with people that have swapped HDD with SSD.
