Don't know if it's already been posted or not, but I just noticed this on samsung's very own website (in italian):

I tried and found nothing. Only new Samsung Chronos are comparable to MACs, everything else has weak parts and high prices - mostly garbage displays or chasis. If Samsung doesn't mess this up, they will make Apple cry.

And I found this, they have manuals up: http://www.samsung.com/de/support/model/NP770Z5E-S01DE-downloads?downloadName=UM

Looks like 17inch is fat and has a dvd-drive and no sd slot, while 15inchers have sd but no dvd.
    There are also BIOS screenshots.

We should hear something about all the models soon, we are nearing mid February, if they plan to launch it in March sometime as the rumors indicate, then some sort of official announce should be made soon. Atleast i hope

I think I read somewhere that MobileMark 2007 basically is a test with minimum brightness, wifi off, and a sustained 7.5% processor usage.

You do know the New Series 7 is the 2nd generation of this series of laptops right? There's a current Series 7 that's been out since last year.

The 17-inch one looks exactly the same as the current 17-in Series 7...

In that page it isn't mentioned any specific technology, but it's almost impossible for a TN panel to be that good.
    Imho we have two options:
    - it's not a TN panel
    - it's a lie and viewing angles aren't so good :-(

Only a good review can answer this question!

PS: I've been following this thread for a while, I have to say a big "thank you" to everyone posting news and hope about this new notebook

This appears to be the lower end version. 8gb of ram and a 8770m opposed to an 8870m.

    Canada Computers | Notebooks, Netbooks & Tablets | Samsung Nike II High (NP780Z5E-S02CA) Notebook | Intel Core I7_3635QM 8GB RAM, 1TB_5.4KR/16G EC, DVD-RW | 15.6" FHD PLS Touch AMD HD8870M 2GB; Windows 8

These appear to be the proper specs for the high end version

So the only major spec differences are the amount of ram ( 8GB and 16GB) and the 8770m opposed to 8870m? A $400 price difference for these apparent differences. If one is already spending $1300 on a laptop might as well chip in a few extra hundred and get the high end version.

Bakejordac, I would have ordered the the "best buy" model if the specs were high end. Need a new laptop desperately

Why is the price low? In Germany you pay 1300€ for the 8870 model without touch (preorder, could be cheaper at the end).
And they always convert $ to € in 1:1

I took note that the 17" Samsung NP770Z7E is in stock and available as of now in my country. If I order today, I'll have it by tomorrow morning.

Unfortunately I'm waiting for the 15" NP770Z5E, but I think it's safe to say it will roll out this coming week??

Anyway the NP770Z7E is available as of now for Dutch residents(people living in The Netherlands) and I hope other countries will follow soon.

February 15th in the USA? OK, one-week announcement that isn't. Are they planning on announcing on the date itself? Also, Best Buy claiming that's the touchscreen...version? The CES guys said March. What the hell?

Hmmm, sounds a little pricy tbh, 1600-1700 without ssd. so 1800-1900 after buying a 256gb ssd. Approching rMBP prices, I doubt samsung has the same aftermarket support and resale value of apple.

I considered a rMBP, but I decided against it for a few reasons

    * Touchscreen is nice, kinda want that

    * Graphics on the rMBP is a 650m with 1 GB of GDDR5 vs the 2 GB on the 8870M

    * Lack of interest in OSX -- so the extra price for that isn't particularly amusing to me.

Basically, the rMBP trades graphics, a bit of battery life, and a touchscreen for ultra-high resolution -- and costs more to boot. Not to mention you still have to upgrade the RAM on the rMBP, to 16 yourself.

I'm waiting for the haswell refresh personally, then I'll decide between either the rMBP or the Chronos. I don't really like the full keyboard my self, at least on the current series 7/ the keys feel smaller and "flat" compared to apple ones.

The manual for the 770z7e can also be found here: SAMSUNG

The SD card is on the front (as opposed to the side as on the 770z5e).

Still not clear whether the SATA II just refers to the HDD (the most logical explanation) or the actual port.

My guess is that since the HDD's are listed as 9.5mmH SATA 2 HDD OR SSD, that your instinct is correct -- the HDD is SATA 2, it doesn't mean to imply that the port is SATA 2, not least of which because that would be stupid.

I have no insight into the mind of Samsung, but I'd guess yes.

Beefy performance, small frame, both with good battery, similar weight (Chronos is roughly half a pound heavier) and with a design very reminiscent of the rMBP, I'd find myself hard-pressed to believe Samsung put no thought into beating the rMBP with this.

Though strangely, it might pull a different crowd than that -- to me, I was considering a gaming laptop due to the power of it, but I did want better battery life and a sleeker design/weight, so barring any surprises, this is my next laptop.

    Hi guys,

A little bit of a newb question I guess. But, how does a headphone/mic combo jack that this laptop comes with compare to 2 separate discrete jacks for headphons and a mic? Will the audio in and out be the same quality or is there a trade-off in using a combo jack.

I have googled extensively, but haven't found an answer!

    Thanks ahead of time!

I'm not really sure, but I know that the sound quality that comes out of my iPhone's jack or any macbook's jack is fine, so I doubt there is any major effect, if any.

Hmm, checked out the model number on a few European websites (NP770z5e) and it looks there's both a 8570 and an 8870 for sale in different markets. There's a German one that's 8870 and a British one that's 8570.

Anyway, it looks hella expensive: don't see it going for 899 at Best Buy anytime soon. :) The German one is listed at 1700 euros!! I suppose after beating the MBP they gotta go after the Zenbook, though.
