I agree. Also, if it was an empty slot then there would be a couple of pillars on the main board for the fixing screws.
Some people might think that they don't need such a large battery and some of it's space could be passed over to other components. However, I suspect that the battery also acts as a counter-weight to stop the computer tipping over backwards when the display is pushed back.

It definitely needs that battery because I'm only seeing 6 hours of normal use so far.
Sent from my GT-N7000 -
Why only? 6 hours are Ultrabook performance...
-
6 hours under normal use is not that much of an upgrade over the previous generation model however. Certainly not near Samsung's 11 hours, but of course that varies with use. Really though, with a 91Whr battery over the last generation's 80Whr, I'd expect a 1 hour increase at most.

I just spoke with 2 people from amazon.fr. They had 'no information' about delivery date. How is that actually possible? They couldn't even say if it still was for Q1. I am so tired of waiting!!! :banghead:
-
That's called Samsung support. They are known for that.
It just looks like they don't want to sell it at all. -

By the way how is it on the fan noise front?
The ASUS U500VZ fan noise was a deal breaker for many. -
Just checked it out at best buy. Very nice laptop. Screen was sharp and everything seemed to work smoothly.
I think this will satisfy the majority of consumers with no issues.

I mean why they keep the release date so confidential? -
From this website in canada.
Canada Computers | Notebooks, Netbooks & Tablets | Samsung Nike II Mid (NP760Z5E-U01CA) Notebook | Intel Core I7_3635QM.50 GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TBHDD, DVD-RW | 15.6" HD PLS Touch AMD HD8770M 1GB; Windows 8
Canada Computers | Notebooks, Netbooks & Tablets | Samsung Nike II High (NP780Z5E-S02CA) Notebook | Intel Core I7_3635QM 8GB RAM, 1TB_5.4KR/16G EC, DVD-RW | 15.6" FHD PLS Touch AMD HD8870M 2GB; Windows 8
Under specifications you will see that a MAJOR difference between the 780z5eSO1 and 780z5eS02 is that SO1 has a 4CELL 57wh battery whilst SO2 has an 8CELL 91wh battery!
That is a major reason I think the SO1 is cheaper by $350 - $500.
I do not know if other countries ship SO1 with 91wh batteries and if so what website with complete specifications? -
but even it were, I don't see the space for a mSATA SSD or someone is thinking to cover the fan with it? -
-
There is no space for anything except a mini Wi-Fi card. -
-
-
Major difference are 8770m vs 8870m (8870m performs almost double) and screen resolution 1368X768 vs 1920X1080 (I have some doubt that they are both PLS), from what we know the display FHD use MVA technology, and I think that HD panel is a simple TN.
This is the first time that we even see a difference in battery capacity.
Also in description they says Color: Ebony Black instead of Bare Metal so i think that is not series 7 but series 5 the only black model:

Thank you. Correction noted.

Waiting is no problem but I don't like to hear 5 different release dates from 5 different Samsung employees.
All that info needs to be on their website, nice and clean in a comparsion list/chart whatever.
If new MACs were out, if wouldn't even care for this any longer.
+200-300 bucks for competent support is worth the money - if something is wrong and you need to RMA, you would hit incompetence for sure @ Samsung. -
(I'm speaking just for Europe) -
FWIW I got decent support for my Galaxy S3. Not sure what their laptop support is like however. That being said, my wife always received stellar support for her MBP and going to an Apple store is usually more effective than calling.

As a side note. I don't think half the people who came to this thread have even read any of it. This thread is discussing the 8870 model, Not the 8770, which yes, has already been released in some low capacity.

NP760Z5E-S01US is what we know in Europe as NP570Z5E (series 5) and is made in Ebony Black.
Series 5 always had smaller battery than 7. -
The Holy Grail? Hopefully!!!
I haven't had the opportunity to look back in the postings for what I'm about to provide - I have a search tool that will allow those in USA to see Best Buy locations that have started to receive the NP780Z5E (w AMD HD8770 not 8870) - YES the 780 not the 700. I just drove to Oakland area to pick one up about an hour ago.
Here is a link for the Best Buy Business site that provides shortcut to the ordering page. It shows that it is not availale but if you look below that there is a search link for store locations within the US. A couple of locations I verified were in Northern Cal Area and also TN. Arizona did not have any yet but search your area in detail utilizing suburbs etc... Eventually you will find were they are.
I do hope that the link works for you because you cannot search their site for the MFR or SKU #'s. At least this was not possible this morning.

BTW here 1 of 2 stores in San Jose area that have them. Call first with the SKU 8048198 to verify stock most places only received 1 or 2. They will hold them for a day.

That connector is the keyboard ribbon cable connector. The black/dark grey strip on the connector is the securing latch for the ribbon cable. Usually you flip up that latch and it releases the ribbon cable. Pretty much every modern laptop in existence has one in nearly the same spot (I have opened many many a laptop). -

Anyone have thoughts on where the previous Chronos 640M sits in relation to the 8770 and 8870 version of the new model?

Just had to say the link to BB Business worked great. I bewildered the Best Buy employee because I knew his inventory on the 780Z5E-S01UB than he did.
I bought this model to give it a trial run and see if it'll run everything I need / if it's liveable with or not. We'll see if I should've held out for the S02 instead in a week or two.
Lots of good info in this thread though, thanks! -
You should do a mini reviewno one has yet!
Ik it's the lower version but same chassis and similar heating, etc. and same speakers! -
-
-
Hahaha.....
But seriously... -
Are the hd8870m models for sale yet? I saw an hd8770m model at best buy today... wondering how much more than hd8870 model will cost and if its worth waiting an paying more for it.
-
Thanks! -
I'm actually starting to wonder if I should settle for the 8770. The most demanding games I anticipate playing in the near future are Planetside 2 and Rome 2: Total War. The problem I have with getting the higher 8870 version is that I would probably put an SSD in it, which pushes the price to ~2000 (or over, with tax), at which point I may end up just building a desktop (and perhaps buy a cheap laptop). Whereas ~1400 (with an SSD) for a midrange card and only one computer still seems reasonable. -
I also wonder if there is some kind of undocumented cache in this thing... I played with one at best buy for about 45minute today... rebooted several times... the first reboot took 40 seconds, the second took 30 and the third took 21.
The battery in this seems really good though... I left it on battery and typed for about 30 minutes and it said there was about 8hrs, 55min battery remaining when i was done. That was at 50% brightness, typing in notepad. -
I guess it also depends if the higher version comes with an SSD or the 1TB HDD. I saw both configurations online. If you have an 8870M plus 256GB SSD, it would make more sense for the 500 dollar increase in price

Let's do a summary:
In Germany they sell 17 inchers, all with 8870M and no touch:
NP770Z7E-S01 = 1TB version , 1250€
NP770Z7E-S02 = 128GB SSD version , 1450€
NP770Z7E-S03 = 256GB SSD version , 1600€ (but only available in 3 shops, Amazon etc.)
NP770Z7E-S04 = same as S03 but more pricy , 1650-1700€
Someone said back cover is made of plastic? Maybe that's the difference between S03 and S04 ?
