Wait, what laptop do you have? You have the new series 7 chronos with win 8?
Thats all i have experience with.

Got the older version with Win 7 - just figured out how to do it seamlessly with newest Paragon Migration OS, despite the fact that no recovery partition is now available, but i can live with it.
Was not able to find the clone (copy) disk option in Samsung recovery, i guess its available in legacy versions and not in samsung recovery 5 or only for higher models...
Thanks for reply, mate. -
Personally, I don't see the point in buying a high-end Windows 8 laptop without touch capability. If you're going to go with no touch, you might as well roll back to 7.
-
Why? Some people would never use a touch-screen in a laptop form-factor (it requires you to raise half of your arm) and/or prefer a matte screen.
There are several 3rd party programs for bringing the start-menu back in Windows 8 so the user never has to see the metro interface. Windows 8 is pretty much Windows 7 + metro - start-menu + some improvements like the new graphical task manager and the move/copy file operation with graphs and A PAUSE BUTTON! -
I qualified my statement with "personally" precisely because it's my own feelings on the subject - having to install third party stuff just to avoid using an operating system's biggest feature would make me feel dirty inside.
I've been looking around for comparable laptops to the Chronos. How does the Zenbook Touch U500VZ compare? It's got a 650M in it, a full HD IPS display, same RAM, some really fancy storage options...I can't find a release date for it either though, and if the price of the non-touch version is any indication, it's gonna cost well over $2k. There's also the Sony Vaio SVE14A27CXH (man, these laptops have such catchy names) but it's only got a 7670M which I'm assuming doesn't measure up to the 8770M, but does anyone know exactly how much worse it is? -
95% of what I do I never would need to touch the screen. Besides a mouse just works faster for me.

Quick question : I finally picked up my NP7705ZE-S01FR and I'm in love with it
I'm currently testing Windows 8 before swapping from the 5400rpm HDD to a rocket-fast SSD, and I'll probably go for the "fresh install + SW update" combo.
However, I'd like to keep the recovery image somewhere on an external HD. I successfully used the matching option in the Samsung Recovery software, which got me a folder named "SamsungRecovery" on my external HD containing a .wim file. I guess this stands for "Windows Image" or something close, so everything looks good. My question is : if I ever need to restore my laptop to factory default state, well... how do I do that ? -

If you keep and do not reformat the original HDD then you can put that back in and press F4 at the BIOS screen. Would this achieve what you want to do?
John -
Actually I was thinking I'd reformat the original HDD in order to use it for storage. But I just realized that if I ever perform a system restore from the default image (for after-sale service I guess) that will be on the original HDD, and I'll have to erase everything it contains. Silly, huh ?
I think I'll just keep the recovery partition until the fresh install on the SSD is operational (drivers and all the fancy features included) and then just get rid of it. I'm pretty sure I won't run into any problem anyway. -
I think the ideal situation is to just clone the HDD on the SSD. That way you'll keep the recovery partition and have it if anything goes wrong with windows.
-
That's the easiest way if shrinking the partition(s) to a 256 GB SSD works out. Should the Samsung Recovery software be able to do that ?
Anyway, if the fresh install goes bad or features don't work properly, I'll try the cloning. (I hope not, the SSD capacity is not that large and I would rather save 10% off of it)
Thanks for your replies, I'll let you know how it goes by next week

You can still use the HDD for storage. Just don't delete the recovery partition. It's better to leave it bootable so that, if you do encounter a problem which might be either hardware or software you can put back the Samsung installed Windows and check if the problem still occurs.
John -
I have a problem replacing HDD with SSD. I boot into Samsung recovery but it does not detect my brand new usb stick (I tried using 2 different sticks with same results, they both work fine on other computers). Any clue what could be wrong?
-
Fast Bios Mode enabled in bios? This skips any USB checks.
-
A question about hdd replacement. I would like to proceed with recovery rather than with a fresh installation, but in this way will the hdd stay "untouched"? I mean, I'd prefer to have a perfect bootable spare hdd with everything stock, just in case of problem so I can just put it back in place of ssd, and therefore use hdd in an external enclosure just for storage. So will thie recovery method leave it intact?

I would keep all the partitions - they are there for some reason - and shrink C: and create a new partition in the empty space. I'm not sure if Windows Disk Management would be capable of doing this - give it a try now. If it can't then there are third party partition management utilities.
Follow what pandafan is doing (see reply above this) and you will find out. It should be possible.

Hey chaps,
Does anybody have any information about the NP770Z5E/NP780Z5E's availability in the UK? The only one that has started to trickle in is the NP780Z5E- T01UK, a weaker i5 & 8850M configuration. At the moment anybody in the UK would be better off importing from DE or US. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Someone bought a NP770Z5E-S01UK from the John Lewis Kingston store. It's also on the Samsung UK website.
It's not current listed on any etailer website. Perhaps someone took a few round from the Samsung UK office just down the road (Chertsey, Surrey KT16 0PS).
John -
I would rather have i5+8850 than i7+8770 if I'm looking for a gaming machine... unless you are talking about the 8870 version
-
Can you check please that yours notebooks supports AES-NI instructions?
My (NP770Z7E-S01PL) does not support, and I am angry because I needed that to accelerate TrueCrypt software.
It seems to me that Samsung is blocked AES-NI in BIOS - I have updated to the latest. -
Windows Disk Management says it can only shrink the C: partition from 908 GB to approximately 450 GB, and that's not going to work for me. Too bad.
I'm going to leave the HDD untouched until I get the SSD and install W8 on it (not before tuesday evening...) -
Not sure what you're talking about here!?! Currys/PCWorld have been the first in the world to stock and dispatch the NP780Z5E S01 - which is the core i7 with 8870 graphics and touchscreen - admittedly they're out of stock at the moment, but more are due in shortly. If you import one, they keyboard layout and AC adapter sockets will be different. You're better of waiting or seeing if you can order one from your local store.
-
I'm not sure that they're due shortly, the guy I spoke to at PC world seemed to think that any replacement ones are a ways off since there's no record of them in the warehouses :/
-
NP880Z5E-X01CH available in Switzerland.
NP880Z5E-X01EE in Eastern Europe with i7 8850
NP870Z5E-X01EE also Eastern Europe but i5 8850 -
"Shortly" perhaps being a relative term!!? But it shouldn't be more than a couple of weeks (Unless North Korea intervenes!!)
-
Rumour said that King Dong Ung is desperate to have one in red.
-
It seems the price is around 1500€, the specs seem the same of Chronos S02, so windows 8 PRO on board, but it's even specified TPM.
I have always thought that TPM was enabled in Chronos S01, but the question about AES instructions remind me that this was only a speculation.

This is my big fear, even if these notebooks most likely are not made in Korea, for sure a war will have a big impact on price and availability.
Just now I have noticed a slight rise of prices in Italy and maybe even in Germany, but maybe it's because they have a big demand.

i paid for mine on 3rd of March. It was showing in stock at the time. I'm still waiting. Got a phone call couple of weeks ago from Currys. They said that they will have them in stock within 1 - 2 weeks. It will be two weeks next tuesday. If it won't be dispatched by the end of next week im cancelling my order and wait for other shops to have it.

And you qualified your second sentence with "you might as well" as a suggestion to others based on your opinion about Windows 8 and touchscreens.
Your first sentence states your own opinion, and that's fine. But I was replying to your 2nd sentence, which was a suggestion for others to roll back to Windows 7 if there's no touch screen. -

Very good performance I think, especially as I was also recovering an external HDD in the background!
Edit: Had to reupload without music to due youtube copyright issues! -
Don't want to gloat, but I was fortunate enough to be one of the first to get the Curry's/PCWorld versions of this. And I have to say, unless the 16gb with SSD version suddenly becomes available, this is seriously worth the wait!

John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
You may need to defrag the HDD. Good disk management software will do this in order to create contiguous empty space.
John -
With 3rd party software I was able to set up a 250GB partition for Win and 650GB for Games

Any news on new 8870 drivers?
-
You say available. I can see some sites in Switzerland with it listed, but they all say out of stock, delivery date unknown. Do you know any that actually have one in stock?
-
If I were in your shoes I might wait till other shops to have it before cancelling the order.

Anyone know if ubuntu can be installed on this laptop via clean install?
-
Is it just me or the Chi Mei panel is grainy with a greasy look on the 1080p screen.
Same symptoms with MSI GT70 and G75 with a Chi Mei screen.
Did anyone get an AUO or LG panel? -
The 17.3' just came out on bb's ad, gonna go first thing on monday to get it
-
Every panel will be grainy, because it is a matte screen. Also my AUO, but have no probs with it

yes it can. posted a guide in "owners...thread"

BIOS will not detect my bootable USB dribe as a boot option, even though I set all the options as described and restarting the machine multiple times. The only option I get is the SSD. Any ideas what should I do?
-
Woohoo, this is the first time the 8870's been spotted in the US, right?
Hopefully the 15" will be out this week as well!
Samsung 17.3" Laptop 8GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive NP770Z7E-S01UB - Best Buy -
Is disabling IntellyMemory really much better for the performance?
-
Worked wonders for me. It was causing my machine to use 10.1gb of RAM when the machine was idle. Since removing it, I only use about 1-2gb when idle.
-
Is unbuntu the more reasonable OS to install instead of windows 8 and can it be installed on this laptop without trouble?(as you guys said it was refusing windows 7)
-
I know, it will cause lower RAM consumption. But You say, there will also be a performance boost, right?
-
FYI the 17.3' is being sold on BB's website at a discount for $1,149.99. Thinking of buying this one and using the extra savings towards a SSD drive.
