Who's to say the 15" won't be discounted when released?
-
For Germans: The 770z5e is actually available with 10% discount at Amazon Warehousedeals
-
It really doesn't make a noticeable difference to the Performance from a RAM perspective, Intellimemory is fairly dynamic and will only use the spare memory available, so if you need to use the RAM for another application, Intellimemory reduces the amount it uses and when you're not using the RAM, it expands.
Of course, it will always have slight performance impact on other applications as it is itself a running application. If you have SSD, there's not really any point having it installed, if you use the default HDD, then you will probably see performance improvements, certainly when launching applications. -
Still no USA availability for 8870 model.... Right? Samsung site is just best buy model -
The 17" 8870 just showed up on bestbuy
-
got a link? im sure its been posted, im just not seeing it
-
I think it's this one:
Samsung - 17.3" Laptop - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive
None of the ones available so far are the touch-enabled ones, right? -
the 15" with the 8770 has been available for a while, but the fully loaded 15 w/ touchscreen is not in the US yet.
-
=))º°˚˚˚°ºнaĦaнaº°˚˚˚°º=)) lol
-
What about the ones with SSD and 16GB RAM? Are they supposed to be coming to the US sometime (if at all)?
Initially I was looking at the NP700Z7, then someone here pointed me towards the new series with the 8870 - which looked pretty exciting first. But looking at the notebookcheck review, the difference in performance between the GT650M and the 8870 seems rather marginal (better drivers will probably improve this, but not sure to what extend). Now I'm wondering, if I should hold out for the new model or get a 700Z7 at discount (and put in 12GB and a SSD). How does the old and new model compare (screen, battery, performance)? -
I just found something interesting...
On Samsung's US website under the Features tab for this laptop, it says that it has the AMD 8870:
https://www.samsung.com/us/computer/laptops/NP780Z5E-S01UB-features
But in the specs, it says it has an 8770:
https://www.samsung.com/us/computer/laptops/NP780Z5E-S01UB-specs
So... which is it? -
That's the model number for the 15in Best Buy model. It has the 8770.
-
Hm... but then why would they put that it has the 8870 in the features page? Can't wait until the US version comes out. I've been stuck on this 2007 Toshiba laptop for the longest time!
-
Since 2007?
-
I got some bad news for you, the screen that I'm talking about is glossy and a touchscreen and it was Chi Mei panel and it was grainy
. -
It describes the 8870 as a "factory option." This term, as used by Samsung, has cause problems before. It doesn't seem to mean what others in the industry might mean, and it changes meaning depending on which Samsung rep one speaks to. As far as I can figure it, they mean that not every version of the laptop will come with this feature, so it is "an option". But the video card is integrated with the motherboard, so one is stuck with whichever version comes off the Samsung factory line. It is not able to be changed by the user or the retailer.
-
Can you supply your display hardware ID?
I find very strange that there are different supplier for a MVA panel.

I've talked about the non touchscreen-models (770z5e). How a glossy screen can be grainy is hard to understand for me
-
I'm chalking it up to poor content oversight. It wouldn't be the first time.
-
I can't see an option to search through this thread so someone please help me! I think someone must know the answer to this
How the bloody hell do you get the chronos to keep the backlight keyboard on??? I've told it in samasung settings not to turn it off yet it keeps doing it!!! I've also turned off the ambient light sensor in battery settings which works for the screen yet the keyboard is still being forced to turn off by it. Am I missing something?
I've used my google skills to no avail so hope someone can help please!! -
I am quite suprised also since I assumed Glossy screens should be vibrant and clear with a glossy glassy look but this Glossy Touchscreen from best buy is a Chi Mei panel and the damn screen is grainy like some kind of grease or protective film was on it.
Here was my original review on it
I just used it for a whole week and i can give my honest review and opinion about it.
Pros:- Great cool metal build quality
- Light, Slim and portable
- Intel Centrino 6235 is perfect with no disconnects
- 1080p FHD and Viewing Angle is perfect at any angle vertically and horizontally, It's like an IPS Display (the good things about the display ends here and more on 1080p display cons at the bottom)
- Good responsive touchpad and vertical scrolling
- Great keyboard with no flex at all
Cons:
- Display has a yellowish tint even on standard setting and when you change to "No Effect" the yellow tint is even more pronounce. I noticed touchscreens mostly have this issue especially with the ipads and samsung smartphones
- Grainy screen and i don't understand why. The reason you go with glossy is to avoid the grainy surface of a matte screen and glossy should give you cleaner glass look but no, the glossy screen is like the same screen as my Sony Vaio s13p with the matte. I have other laptops here with glossy screen and it is clear and not grainy at all. I think they put something on top of the damn glossy screen to reduce some kind of glare making it grainy.
- Backlit Keyboard can't be turn off and it has a mind of its own turning on and off and sometimes you can't even see the keys themselves since the backlit makes the keys unreadable.
Other things to note, the 8770m is currently being reported my MSI Afterburner and HWinfo32 as 8750m instead of 8770/8870m but after doing 3dmark vantage and 3dmark11, i'm sure this is just a glitch. Some games also does not show 1080 as an available resolution option. A real future 8000m series gpu driver can probably fix those in the future once they become officially available from Samsung or AMD/ATI website.
Right now, this laptop is going back to Best Buy for a full refund. I would've kept it but the yellow tint on the display and that grainy screen on a glossy screen is a major turn off. -
I thought the touchscreen models weren't available yet?
-
The 8770m version has been available from bestbuy for a while now, like with a touchscreen

First spotting with 16gb!

Any ETA for the US version?
-
That just comes up with page not found for me and no 780 in the products list.
-
Thanks for trying. The actual solution was changing the format of USB from FAT32 to NTFSC.
My quick noob guide on how to change HDD for SSD.
On boot press F4 when Samsung logo appears to access Samsung recovery. Export recovery image to USB stick.
Change the HDD to SSD.
Plug in the usb stick. On boot press F4 again. Recovery will automatically detect your USB recovery stick. Adjust the size of disk partitions and start recovery. And you`re done. There absolutelly no need to access bios at any time. -
The np780z5e-t02uk with i5 and 8850 is now on amazon.co.uk, albeit out of stock - Samsung NP780Z5E-T02UK 15.6-inch Notebook (Intel core i5 2.6GHz Processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, Windows 8 Professional): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories
-
Bizarrely, this is exactly the same model that Curry's is selling and calling the np780z5e-t01uk. The lack of consistency of nomenclature with this release is highly annoying not to mention most likely a beach of various bits of consumer protection legislation
. -
Looking at the spec, the Amazon version has Windows 8 Pro installed, whereas the Currys version is standard Windows 8. -
You don't want to waste money on Win8 pro. Virtualization etc. is terribly slow.
My installed Linux Ubuntu was unusable and I had to install dual boot
Microsoft products = crap. They don't like to improve running software, instead they add new stuff which isn't great either until they replace again.
Since years they are hunting "innovation trends" the whole time but aren't able to do things properly. -
sucks that bestbuy jacked up the price of NP770Z7E-S01UB 17inch to $1250 (before tax) it was $1100 just yesterday, i suggest people to wait as i'm sure once the product is out within this week or next in the US market, other vendors will compete for price and it will go down again by 10% to 15% .
I plan to get the 17inch, but waiting for price drop / discount. -
umm... I've had this version for nearly a week now
-
To each his own
.
At first, I didn't really like the new Win8 UI. But after using my 780E for over the weekend now, some of the things like 'gestures' actually make the computing experience much more easier (coupled with the touchscreen). I still miss the Start button so will install a 3rd party UI on top....no issues there.
I had to remove some Samsung bloatware and Win8 services and now mine is running flawlessly. No freezes, no disconnects, etc so far. Yesterday, I spent half day with the laptop in my lap watching Netflix and some other Win8 metro apps via the touchscreen. The Bing travel metro app is becoming one of my fav Win apps. My kids downloaded some paint apps and used the touchscreen to draw pics of my, the dog, etc.
Yes...there's a slight learning curve when it comes to Win8 but one you master gestures, etc, you'll realize it actually makes the computing easier. The Win8 metrro apps are nowhere like Android, Apple but to experience them on a laptop (especially touch screen), it is indeed a wonderful experience.
Put it this way, I haven't used my iPad3 since I bought my Samsung laptop.
-
Hopefully a configuration with 16GB and SSD will appear as well and hopefully for both Chronos 7 and the Ativ Book 8.
-
i look into this thread like 4 times a day hoping someone has an 'inside scoop' on a US release and price. it so hard to remain patient
-
Has anybody have like me the power led completely off when the laptop is in sleep mode ? This is annoying cause then we can not tell if the pc is off or just in sleep discharging battery. In the manual it says it should blink in sleep, and I actually did see it blink but I think that was when I installed the intel HD4000 driver. But with those drivers the laptop reboot when I close the lid ! Any idea? Apart from that and the auto brightess of keyboard, this laptop is very nice.
-
In Germany they have the NP770Z5E-SO3fr version that has both a blu-ray drive and a 256Gb SSD, the 16Gb of RAM and the 8870m, but im not sure when that version is available in the US which is what im waiting for. and dlau77 where did you get the 16Gb version???
-
Bluray?? Sure the number is wrong, and it's referred to 17". There's no room for an optical drive into 770z5e...
-
Jop, seems to be wrong. What I found is the 17 inch-version with blu ray, but only 12GB of RAM:
Samsung 770Z7E-S03 43,9 cm Notebook titan silber: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör -
This configuration (i5 and 8850m) is priced the same as PCWorld's configuration of i7 and 8870m, at £1099.99( SAMSUNG Series 7 Chronos 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop - Silver Deals | Pcworld). I'm assuming they are yet to update it.
-
Hi guys! How hard is to change HDD in 770Z5E? Is there any HDD door on the laptop's bottom?
-
If you have the right tools it is not very hard, I spent 7 bucks and purchased some prying tools for iphones/laptops. These are designed to not damage the case on your shiny new toy. It took me about 20-30 minutes to switch out the hard drive, it just takes patience while you slowly pry the laptop case from front to back. I would look up videos on youtube for assitance.
I did not find it too difficult, the hardest part was getting the back to pry off. -
I have no love for Apple, but for the love of god Samsung take a page out of Apples play book when it comes to releasing products.
I would have just purchased the 17" model from Best Buy yesterday had I known it was apparently just a 1 day sale since any info on availability of the 15" in the US seems beyond the ability of Samsung to comment on. -
agreed, Samsung Laptop division is rubbish when it comes to releasing products, i can imagine just how many customers they lost due to this, i mean imagine the potential if they marketed this properly as a direct competitor to Apple's macbook pro, they also focus on their Galaxy line of products (which is probably more profitable) but They don't realize there is a huge hole that needs filling since Apple decided to price their laptops at $2500+ and make them un up-gradable, a significant percentage of consumers are looking elsewhere, myself included.
and BB fluctuating prices doesn't help either. I don't see why they don't just release the 15inch 8870 model and put this to rest, it out in other regions already. -
It is not like they have a shortage of components. I'm sure they can make enough 8870m models for a US release. They should just release it and get over with it.
-
you have to remember that this isn't a one-trick-pony company, though. i honestly think this isn't a big market segment for samsung. anything they get from the laptop business is a bonus, and smacks apple in the face just a little more. in reality though, their entire product portfolio is so big, they will barely notice the few people who are hitting f5 every ten minutes to see news of the latest ATIV 8.
it's why they had an albeit cheesy but VERY intricate launch for the S4; they're cashing in on their main products. -
Hey,
Bought the 15" version of the Series 7 Chronos from BB 2 weeks ago and have been really underwhelmed by the slow speeds. I just opened up the task manager on a whim and saw that the Disk is running at or near capacity for several programs like System or Service Host, etc. I don't know why these programs are so taxing, but they do drop back down to more manageable levels.
When the disk is at or near capacity everything takes ages to load - web pages, programs, etc. When those background programs settle down though, the machine cruises and I enjoy it for those moments.
Can anyone shed light on this and hopefully help me get the computer to a place where it is fast all the time?
Removed all the Samsung bloatware that I found.
Thanks,
CB -
770z7e model is now released in the u.s. but when i saw the imageof the 770z7e, it looks like the old chronos model(np700), not like np770z5e or np780z5e. I prefer new design more such as backlight color, keyboard, and front cover. Any idea for why np770z7e design is not changed?
