Lol, looks like I'm not the only one who's impatient for this laptop.

Probably not far behind the 8870m. Slightly above the 650m I'd guess.

I don't think it's going to be released early february, more like mid to late. Perhaps even march. What I find weird about this laptop is that most of the info as well as prices are coming from europe instead of the US like with most laptops, phones,..

I also would bet march, given that a samsung guy said march-April, but apparently they're telling people on Facebook that it's early feb?

The march-april guy was that the one on CES? And for the facebook page, I don't really believe it. A lot of companies tend do promise stuff earlier than it will actually be there. I really hope it's true though. I would love to see reviews and benchmarks.

Yea that was the guy from CES.

I would trust him over the Facebook page, but who knows.

So, a realistic guess would be a release in march/April, review soon after?

Something similar happened a year ago. There are two possible reasons: (i) Profit margins in Europe are better than in the USA and (ii) Releasing to selected European countries makes it easier to ramp up production of new models.

Samsung don't have a strong track record of quickly getting new notebooks into the hands of reviewers so we often have to wait for end users to buy them and post their findings such as this.

The S7 Ultra will be released with a FullHD TN-Panel? That's what news sites say :(
How could they put a cheap TN panel into a 1000$+ device made anno 2013 :/

The most awesome notebook ruined for extra 50$ bucks they can earn.
I would gladly pay 150$ more for a perfect notebook but noooooooo, they don't want my money at all.

Linus from linustechtips showed that the series 7 ultra had a pls panel. See the video I posted a few posts back.

New video from samsung for the series 7 ultra:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRMBbsxt58g&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Confirmed 178 degree viewing angle on the ultra so I suppose PLS panel.

yea one of the recent videos the guy said it was a PLS and when he turned the screen to show viewing angles it was def PLS/IPS viewing angles.

if you look at the cost of replacement IPS/PLS laptop panels they range between $300-400 compared to $100-150 for a TN panel so the cost of adding a IPS/PLS screen is actually quite a bit.

The video above is of the Series 7 Ultra, which is not the same as the Series 7 Chronos. The lower spec Series 7 Chronos M is rumored to have the 8850, whereas the Ultra is confirmed to have the 8570M.

Never Q2. Except them in weeks.
If it's Q2 we will wait for Haswell then, at least I will.

Waiting 6 months is a lot but waiting 1-2 months isn't.
I don't care much about Haswell if Samsung adds a dedicated GPU in the new series but if they don't (series 9) you will get outdated ASAP as soon as Haswell hits the shelves. I bet they won't even release a refreshed S9 before Haswell.

There are benchmarks from Intel showing performance of Haswell iGPU, it's like HD4000 x2 but still slower (a bit) than nvidia 650m.

Apparently q2, at least in Canada, so US too probably.

    :(

    Edit

Let's hope it's not q2 in Canada, but if it is q2 in Canada, but earlier in the us, looks like I'll be driving to buffalo.

Has Samsung ever offered the 840 Pro as an SSD option in their laptops?

Sadly, only vga and hdmi on this laptop. I think adapters are expensive or not even available because hdmi and vga are so much less capable. So maybe through usb 3.0? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Do any of you have experience with Samsung notebook quality and after-sale support? I'd hardly trust Samsung for a 1500€ laptop, because I've never seen much build quality on their smartphones and TVs. However, according to Rescuecom reliability report it looks like Samsung notebooks are the most reliable of 2012 Q2...What do you think? I ask because today I learnt that ASUS UX51 will be available in my country only in mid February, so I have to wait another month anyway. I better choose wisely between the two laptops.

Samsung not reliable? I find it funny how opinions can differ.
Got a lot of samsung stuff at home, a Note 2, galaxy S2, a 55' S8000 LED tv and a galaxy tab 10.1 - Never had any problems with any of those. Stuff is also pretty sturdy.
I'd sooner doubt Asus build quality. My Asus laptop has cracks and dents everywhere, and I always carried it with me in a laptop sleeve/bag.

Good to know, thank you! It is my main concern. On a side note, am I wrong or Mike is the only one from CES who reported plastic chassis? Every hands-on I read speaks about full aluminum chassis..

Edit: Don't know how official it is, but here they write

I think some of the cheaper models of the chronos and the ultra have plastic as a part of the chassis. The chronos, as far as I have collected, should be available in full aluminum.

Considering all the images, IMHO the only model made completely in aluminum is Ultra version, maybe the Chronos 15.6" has a bottom made in plastic or others materials, but for me there is any problem.

An Austrian dealer announces the availability from February 8, 2013:

Damn it looks like the 17 inch version won't get a PLS touchscreen... they don't mention viewing angles and the nit is lower (300 vs 350). :/

Haven't we already been over this? I believe the Chronos M is plastic and the Chronos H is aluminum. There's a video back a page or two that shows both models. They have different colored keyboards, as well as different internals. The "H" is the one you seek...

That's exactly the same thing as the current 17.3" model only it seems as though they've swapped the 650M with the same 8870M in the 15."

Unfortunately they don't write anything about toch/non touch. Has it been confirmed that there will be
    - a non touch matte Full HD PLS display
    - and a touch glossy Full HD PLS display?

BTW, I remember the discussion about one ram slot soldered, but what was the source of this information?

This is what the specs from amazon say:
Dsiplay FULL HD, tastiera ad isola retro-illuminata con sensore di luminosità ambientale, scocca full metal

I do not speek italian but to me " ad isola retro-illuminata con sensore di luminosità ambientale" sounds like anti-glare display with brightness sensors. (Automatic brightness?). I have no idea wath "tastiera" means though. I'll look it up. I think scocca full metal means that this laptop will indeed get a full metal jacket.

Edit: tastiera means keyboard . Does anyone speak italian?

Yeah I'm italian :) It means
"Display Full HD, backlit keyboard (tastiera retroilluminata) with ambient light sensor, full metal chassis (scocca = chassis)" but they don't write anything about touch :(. At least they confirm full metal chassis

Searching the thread I also found that famous PDF in which they wrote about the 4/8 GB on board :(. I also found again in the PDF that touch will be a factory option. Hope the non-touch is matte

Let's hope that they did their job well with heat dissipation. I'd prefer some rubber coating on the keys of the keyboard, but I can live with bare aluminum :)

Does anyone know if Chronos M's HDD is replaceable with the standard 2.5inch SSD? OR do we have to use Msata?

Chronos M with Samsung 840 PRO SSD would ROCK

Guys 8gb is too low for that price. It means that only 4gb are soldered. I'd prefer at least 12gb, that means 8 soldered + 4 on sodimm, so I can upgrade easily to 16gb whenever I want.

Though it won't show me the full description.
