I ordered the NC10 SE...if it has the matte screen....that would be awesome, I was willing to live with it, but matte would be much better.

Can you link to the OP at amazon making this claim?

    Hi all,

i have been looking around the internet for the samsung Special, and from what i have found they are not intending to release it in the uk soon, if at all, but someone managed to get a reply from them saying that enough people request it they will add it to the uk site.

So if you have 5 minutes spare could we get as many people as possible to ask amazon.co.uk for the 'Samsung NC10-11PBK Special Edition' to be brought to the uk, thats amazon.co.uk and not amazon.com.

    Thanks alot

Some Amazon customers are being told the NC10 S.E. won't ship until April 27th. I contacted Amazon support and they wouldn't confirm or deny Sumsung's claim that the "first batch" of NC10 S.E. had been sent out. I canceled my order due to canned Amazon responses and the fact that others are being told April 27th...The next generation Ion platform based netbooks will be out by then for crying out loud !

Anyway...to those who have ordered the NC10 SE at Amazon....good luck. I really hope it isn't another two months for you all.

    Regards,

    Mike

Yikes. Looks like I'll be going with the regular NC10. The only question now is...

    Blue or White ?

I prefer the blue, color-wise, but I hate that it has a glossy finish. I wish it were matte.

Question: For those that have seen both colors in person (I've seen neither) just how glossy is the Blue finish? If it's prone to smudges and fingerprints I might be better off going with White.

    Thanks! :)

im up to page 63 of this thread but i have decided to order it and it should be here either tomorrow or thursday, but i have a few questions that im hoping someone could answer for me.

    1. If i make a nlite folder/iso, how would i put this onto a usb flash drive to install it? i have seen a coupe of videos on the net but i never trust them.

    2. Do you still have to charge batteries fully before you can use them?

    3. Has anyone tried the zagg invisible shield cover, or something along them lines to stop the scratches?

    4. Is there a conclusion to what the best wifi driver is for the stock wireless card?

    5. Is the intel graphics drivers still better than the samsung graphics driver? and is the most recent intel driver the best.

Sorry there is so many questions but i want everything to be set when i get it.

    Thanks

edit, will the cooling guide on this forum using rmclock to undervolt work with the nc10?

is anyone elses screen realy grainy, mines rubbish, it shows as a plug and play monitor in the hardware profile.

i went to my local store and the asus looks a million times better for the screen.

Apart from the screen its a ace netbook.

will resize it that pic is a bit big, its not as bad as that but you can clearly see the grainy screen, my phone camera doesnt help.

yep, its all updated and the resolution is correct.

(Its my camera that has the burnt out bit and not the netbook.)

as i said, other than the screen its a brill netbook, does anyone know how to get into the boot menu to boot from usb when the hdd is set for first boot priority. Also does the nc10 come with a fat32 or ntfs hdd?

one more question :), does your nc10 show the screen as plug and play?

    thanks

I just put a white NC10 into my cart at Amazon.com, and was literally about to click on 'Order Now' when I got an email message saying the NC10 Special Edition price was reduced down to $469.

I don't really want glossy black... but after waiting this long to buy I guess I can wait a few more days to at least hear some first-hand reports on the the SE model. :)

I think the graininess you are seeing is a result of the anti-glare coating.

Press the Esc key when the Samsung screen is displayed.

I've got 3 plug and play monitors. They are all CPT04C4.

    thanks john,

looking at it properly it seems to be something on the screen instead of the screen itself, any way to get rid of it?
Ive got a massive headache now, not sure if its being tied or the screen or both.

Will try pressing esc, thanks again :).

Yeh ive got three as well, not sue wher it gets that from but o well.

I guess that goes back to the matte vs glossy screen. I would still take a matte over a glossy anyday just because of the glare but a half glossy screen would make me think (do they even exist?)

I'll still reserve judgement until I see them in person.

Well guys, I pulled the trigger on a "regular edition" NC10. I decided to go with White, for the matte finish.

Ordered it from Amazon with overnight shipping, so it should be here tomorrow.

Cool some more nc10 owners :), its a great machine after you get used to the anti-glare coating they put on it or the screen, will never know which one causes the grainy affect.

Im still tweaking it to get the best out of it, ive got the graphic drivers off the intel website as they are supposed to be better than samsung's version, and ive also completely re-installed it with a nlited version of xp so it has only the stuff i want on it, and it runs like a dream now.

Im even getting 5 strengh signal for wireless, and the router is at the other side of the house nearly and downstairs. Im not sure if anyone else agrees but download the wlan driver from samsungs site and then when it asks you what you want to install selevt the one that includes both the driver and the program, i was only getting 3-4 bars when i wasnt using the atheros utilty.

edit. how often does the fan come on everyone's nc10, mine keeps comming on, and its really noisy when you are in a quiet room.

Hmmm, how did you guys set up the Samsung Recovery Solution III ?

    Looks like the default is 6 gb recovery / 71gb for C: / 72gb for d:

What do you guys suggest ???

We've been here before, but I tend to make C: big enough for windows + programs (maybe 40GB) and give the bigger share to D:.

You might want to make C: even smaller. If you restore the OS then you lose whatever is there while the contents of D: should be safe.

    Thank you, John! :)

I think I'll play it safe and go with the full 40GB in C: as you suggested. That leaves me with 103GB in D: which should be plenty for me.

Thanks again. Rep for you! ;)

I connected to my router no problem (Signal strength good, Status Connected)... but when I launch IE it does not connect.

Any suggestions? I've never not been able to access the Internet before, on any of my laptops.

perhaps the OS is indexing in the background or something? Are your other computers slow as well, or just the NC10? Maybe run perfmon to isolate if something is running in the background you might not be aware of?

    Just random thoughts.

The Atheros wireless card has problems communicating with some routers (I don't know which), but first make sure you have the latest driver.

We've got 3 other laptops in the house plus 1 iPhone, and there's a strong connection on all of them.

The NC10 *says* it's got a strong connection, but it's not acting like it.

I'll try looking at the driver.

    Thanks.

Do any of the other laptops use the PCI-e adpaters...like the DW-1390 or DW-1490? You could swap out the cards to test??

If the other card works better with your router, for $12-$15, you could pick up the broadcom wifi card and pop it into the NC10...and also be ready for OSx86 Leopard...if your so inclined (I ordered my DW-1390 already ;) )

The $12-$15 would be cheaper than a new router if the wifi card present in the NC10 is the problem.

Just throwing out ideas here...I could be completely wrong.

This is very upsetting -- I was really looking forward to the NC10. And frankly, I'd rather not start ordering and replacing parts for it. :(

I understand the feeling about having to spend money to make something right that should have come that way. It does seem odd, I'll agree.

What about taking the NC10 to someplace that offers free wifi...to see if your router is the problem or the NC10...From what somebody posted, there seems to be an issue with the wireless card and some routers...if that's the case, you should be able to find reports of this as well. Maybe there is a known fix...besides using another wifi card?

Keep the faith man, don't let this get ya down.

Well, I just got my special edition a couple hours ago. The fit and finish are very nice. Weight and form factor are awesome.

I am having excessive network disconnects though. I ran the samsung updater...it found no new drivers. I did all the base windows updates etc.

Perhaps I misconfigured something...? I will double check setting with my other XP based laptop and see if I missed something.

I am thrilled with the laptop...which BTW is NOT a glossy screened unit! Once network disconnects are resolved I should be set although I already had a DW-1390 PCI-e adapter on the way for Leopard :D

Cloning original HDD now in prep for 500gb scorpio blue.

    Fun times!

    Hey SoundsGood,

I just discovered that Samsung defaults the "authentication" to be on. I am only using web encription though....if your using WPA2...this might not make a difference. I was getting dropped and reconnected maybe 10-15 times in < 5 minutes. I unchecked this defaulted on "authentication" and I haven't had a disconnect yet.

Maybe it's your issue, maybe not.

Thanks, mismith356, but nothing I do seems to work. I even called Samsung tech support and tried a bunch of things with them too, but we can't figure out what's wrong.

I'm guessing this Atheros wireless card just doesn't jive with my Netgear router... but I'm not getting a new router, and I don't feel comfortable holding on to the NC10 long enough to order a new card to see if it does the trick. If it doesn't work it might be too late to send my NC10 back to Amazon.

I've submitted for a return with Amazon.com. If I can't figure something out over the weekend I'll be returning my shiny new NC10 on Monday.

Very disappointing to say the least. :(

Oh you are able to connect. I guess the first thing to know is does it work with other routers: hotspots?

I don't know of any NC10s with problems, but a few Acers had problems which was resolved by turning off power saving mode in the network options.

Open device manager, double click on the network adapters, advanced tab, turn off power save mode, which doesn't do anything.

Looks like I'd better stick to a machine with a "normal" wireless card. Anyone know what they use in the 1000HE?

Way back in this thread, there was a link to earlier Atheros drivers which worked well with some of the routers. I have tried my NC10 with Linksys and other Broadcom-chip based routers with no issues. You may want to try those older drivers, I think Phil had good luck with those. Look in the first ten pages of the thread.

    SoundsGood,

If you want screen shoots of the check box I mentioned, let me know. I was very, very frequently connecting and disconnecting before that change about "use authentication for 802.XX" under the wireless adapter properties.

I also saw that I was able to connect at times when the network icon showed no connection.

I looked at the 1000HE and compared sizes via side by side comparison pics. The Asus is much bigger and to me, didn't feel as well built as my Sammy.

Some quick questions I can't find the answers to:

    1. Is the screen LED backlit?
    2. Is there any hard drive protection like ThinkPad's APS or even MacBooks or Dell's?
    3. How much sound or heat does this thing generate?

    Thanks!

    1. Yes
    2. No, but you can get a hard drive which features that protection
    3. Very little, almost silent and cool to touch especially on battery.

Hi Mark, thanks for the answers. How happy are you with it?

    2. I was hoping it'd have this feature (very important for me in a portable). Even if the hardware features it I'd like being able to adjust this in the software.
    3. So it's not like other netbooks that seem to run fairly hot on the underside?

I'm very happy with it, and I bought it in November. If I had the choice between this and any other netbook right now, I'd only pick up the NC10 SE over the vanilla NC10.

It does get warm to touch, but not hot as it has a fan and the Atom doesn't get that hot at all.

Differences between SE and regular? Slightly larger trackpad and new Atom? Do both include matte screens (not a fan of glossy)?

No new Atom. New battery, color in the U.S., and bigger touchpad. And yes, both have matte screens.
