It's not the same 6 cell battery? As for color, I thought it was just another black.

What's up the 800mhz DDR2 from the factory, and people dropping in 667mhz DDR2 2 gb as an upgrade, like what amazon is offering? FSB is 533. I always thought you matched your memory speed with that of the FSB.

Are they running the faster than FSB memory strictly for its timings or something else?

That seemed curious to me too. I went ahead and ordered an 800MHz 2GB upgrade even though it was a few dollars more than the 667MHz module, since that is the speed of the memory spec'ed in the system. It may be nothing more than "specmanship" since a system with an FSB of 533MHz wouldn't be able to take advantage of the faster memory. My system hasn't been delivered yet, so I cannot confirm what memory is actually installed from the factory. Can anyone confirm by looking, what memory is installed in the system from the factory? Thanks.

The NC10's memory speed is limited to 533MHz by the Intel chipset.

However, DDR-800 and DDR-667 RAM modules usually contain timing data for operation at 533MHz. The key parameter (CL) for the recent DDR2-800 modules is usually 5 (clock cycles) at 800MHz, 4 at 667MHz and 3 at 533MHz. These are actually the same physical time.

The performance hit caused by the lower memory frequency is quite small and the lower frequency also reduces power consumption.

It's been speculated that Samsung probably had a deal on DDR2-800 memory modules and stuck those in, even though the chipset is limited to DDR2-533.

Unfortunately the 1000HE also uses the Atheros wireless chipset. My guess is that the Atheros' cost is cheaper, that's why it's used predominantly in netbooks. Did you test the NC10 at hotspots to confirm that you did not just get a defective product?

Didn't need to, since it did connect every once and a while. But even when it did connect, it was slow as molasses. Slower than dial-up. (By the way, I also connected the old fashioned way (via wire) without any problems)

Any idea what card other than the Atheros might work in the NC10?

The Intel 5300 (I think it was) is a good replacement, cheap too like 10-20$.

About the wifi, a common symptom of a defective wifi is when it appears as being connected but the connection doesn't work properly. Many Acer users with defective wireless cards had this problem. Connecting via wire is independent because it doesn't use the wireless, it has a different set of drivers.

I thought Atheros was the #1 most supported wifi card brand in Linux? I just can NOT get wifi working on my NC10 no matter what I do. I got it working once, and then after I rebooted I haven't been able to get it back.

That was exactly my issue. The system showed a normal connection (good, very good or excellent) but it wasn't *really* connected.

The Acer I owned had the same problem, it would appear as connected but the connection didn't actually work. Luckily all I had to do was do a 5 minute reinstall of windows and it started working. For many people that didn't do it though. Turning off power save worked for some. Installing the Atheros network connectivity worked for others. There were some other tricks to try but I'm not sure if they'd work. It was a widespread problem on the Acers but I've never heard about it on the NC10, admittedly it sounds like the same problem though.

My guess is if it was a router incompatibility, it would not connect at all. Correct me if I'm wrong though, I can't seem to find any information about router incompatibility through Google and if those who had it were able to connect at all. The only way to confirm is if it works on all other networks but your own.

Not sure if anyone saw this but I ran across it the other day. Actually I ran across it at another site but this was the first I found when I searched to post it today. :)

    http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=0&p=18128653

Note that tigerdirect only has the blue and white models for sale. But if you really want one and the price is holding you back this is the best deal thus far at $380.

The price is what really was holding me back with the NC10. Now that I can get it under $400 the problem is no black color! They really need to sell this machine for a more competitive price. $380-$400 should be a none sale price.

Just wanted to add my name to new NC10 owners. Black NC10, swapped the HD for a 250 GB WD that I had laying around. Upgraded to 2 GB RAM, and swapped the Wifi for an Intel 5300 card. Installed Windows 7 on the new drive and everything works perfectly. Nice little netbook, and I'm sure I'll carry it places that I'd not have bothered to lug my M1530 to. Still keeping the M1530 for more serious stuff though.

Fountainhead, a couple of questions for ya:

    1. How is the Intel 5300 card working for you, and where did you get it?

    2. How difficult was this card to install?

    Thanks!

I installed the 5300 a while ago and it works better than I expected. I also added a third antenna. Very easy to install AFTER you get all the screws out. Be careful!

My 5300 should be here in a couple of days and I've been reading the posts about installing the card. But one things still puzzles me: where did you install the third antenna? Was it in the wrapped around in the body of the NC10, or did you install it in the frame of the LCD?

Here's a good link with pictures:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/samsung_nc10_wifi_upgrade/sets/72157609377833320/

FWIW, the antenna that I got for my 5300 turned out to be way too long to fit into the case, so look for something pretty short. I just left my 5300 with two antennas for now and get good range and connection speeds rated at 150mbps. I may not bother getting a proper 3rd antenna after all. Or maybe I will.

    Hi all,
I'm new to these forms so apologies if this is posted in the wrong place. I have just purchased a Samsung NC10 laptop with Win XP ... i'm trying to temporarily switch the internal microphone off, to allow me to input sound through the external microphone socket, but for some reason can't. Even with a lead plugged into the external socket, the internal mic is still live.

    Anybody have any idea's??

You should be able access a set of recording volume controls under the audio properties and then you can disable the internal mic.

Did you try discharging the battery? Normally, the BIOS is set to not recharge a battery which is only a few % below full in order to minimise the charge cycles, which cause the battery wear. Run the computer for a few minutes on battery until the charge is less than 95% and then see if it starts to recharge.

    I think there's no problem.

The computer does not top up the battery until the charge drops below a certain value. Possibly 95%. You will have to experiment to find out that value but once you understand how the computer manages the battery charging, I hope you agree there is no problem.

    Hey all.

I just became an NC10 owner yesterday (it's a boy!) and immediately noticed something funny. I downloaded firefox and, while it works like a charm for the most part, sometimes when I try to go to gmail it freaks out. It is only gmail, mind you, I've gone to other sites and it has been fine. What it looks like is that it keeps spamming the refresh button before the site ever loads. Boyfriend says it looks like the computer can't get connected to the site fast enough go it spams the address until it connects... which never happens.

After restarting it it works fine for a while, but it does keep happening. Gmail works in Internet explorer, but the laptop does not seem to like firefox gmail. Any suggestions or other people with the same problem?

Besides that, btw, he seems great. Long battery life, decently fast. Screen, touchpad, and keyboard are great. Quiet, cool, and overall I'm extremely pleased... it's just silly gmail :(

When I go to gmail (but this isn't on the NC10) I see a link at the bottom right of the screen to use for slower connections (perhaps because I am on a slower connection). If you can see that link, then try it.

Or you could try this link:

which, I think, is the basic HTML gmail interface.

    Hope this helps,

    John

    First impression....

Little heavier than I thought. Small trackpad is not a big deal for me. Watched a couple of 720p anime and it worked fine. Everything was fine, now my very own laptop for work instead of using my co-workers.... yeah.

    Hi, Daguru,
downloaded setfsb. Because I have this 'thing' about my CPU being 'marked' as 1.6 Gb but only reported as 1.596... I decided to do some serious overclocking; i,e, up to 1.603 - yippee! it's 1.6GB at last...

Trouble is... next boot up it is back to 1.596!

Any suggestion as to how to lock the new fsb??

Hey BrianE, unfortunately you can't lock in the new speed- it gets reset when the computer is powered off. Look into creating a batch file with the following command: setfsb -s134 -cg[CV179CNLG] -w00

Create a shortcut to this batch file a place it in a convenient location. When run, SetFSB will overclock the CPU to 1.604Ghz. The highest stable speed my NC10 can handle is 1.724GHz, so I use -s144.

    Daguru,
spent some time trying to get the fsb.bat to run, from the Start/Programs/Startup folder, and also by double clicking the file (on the desktop) but didn't get any changes... However, after resetting the Get FSB up/down buttons to give me 151/380 a couple of times and restarting again, it seems to have 'locked' to 1604 MHz, which is only a small step, but gives me GREAT pleasure..
Yeah! Small things amuse small minds!!
Thanks anyway, mission accomplished, at least I've got the fsb.bat file on the desktop to remind me the next time fsb reverts to sub 1600MHz.

i put in an order for the nc10 special edition on amazon yesterday. how are these (i'm imagining they're the same exact screen as the nc10) outdoors? would they benefit from sort of anti glare screen cover and where can i pick one up, if they even exist?

I didn't yet try the NC10 in bright summer sunshine but it looked fine in autumn sunshine. The backlight is quite bright at full brightness and the anti-glare coating blocks any nasty reflections.

    Hi people!

Just ordered my wife an NC10 to compliment our Q210. Got 1 question, whilst waiting for it to arrive, does anyone have an electronic copy of the NC10 manual??

Had a look on the Samsung website, but can't find it...
