Didn't think to look under applications!! Thanks![]()

samsung nc10 anti virus/security software.
I've had a nc10 for 2 mnths now it came with macafee as all samsungs do for 3 months. whats the best and cheapest software to replace this, macafee are asking for $59 for a years subscription. I have kaspersky on my main laptop but they ask for $49 online for 1 pc, there must be somewhere cheaper and better to safeguard my samsung that doesn't involve a cd. -

Possibly consider one of the free AV solutions such as AVG, but my current favourite AV software is NOD32 because it isn't bloated or use a lot of resources. A single licence isn't so cheap but if you can get together with family or friends and share a multiple-seat licence then the pricing is much more attractive.
Also check retail outlets for CD copies of last year's versions of AV packages. There can be some good discounts. You can copy the CD contents to a flash drive using your main laptop.

on the subject of virus scanners. i personally use kaspersky internet security suite and it doesnt cause any problems, or performance issues, on my nc10.
although i must stress that it isnt loaded with windows xp by default and isnt resident in memory until i manually load it and scan every now and again.
its not free, and isnt quite as good as nod32. i got it cheap from amazon.co.uk in a 3 licence bundle.
i use the slightly older version (its around version 7 if i recall). i dont use version 8 client on my netbook as i feel its a little less user friendly and a tad more bloated. -
Since I got Windows 7 I haven't bothered with anti-virus. I just stepped UAC to the highest setting.
-
Since I use it almost strictly for mobility, I don't really bother with antivirus. Firewall maybe is another issue.
-
I'm thinking about getting the NC10. I had an Acer Aspire 8gb SSD with Linux Lite and it booted up fairly quicky (20 seconds) which I liked.
I'm probably expecting the 160gb HD and XP will take longer to boot, but I was curious about how long? -
Anyone tried playing on www.miniclip.com
The games there are flash based I think and I want to know if the games
go off the screen or if you can actually play them?
I wanted to buy a netbook with a 10 inch screen but this is a concern for me
THanks

I just got my N10 from Costco. It runs perfect. I'm a photographer and want to use this netbook in the field for storage & viewing.
I tried to install Canon DPP but this software won't run because of the limitations of the 10" screen and the resoltution its too low.
I installed Adobe elements 7 without a hitch but when I tried to view RAW images in adobe Raw converter I get the popup that the resolution are too low and I can't close the program without Task Manager.
It will read .jpg files only
I'm returning it because of that reason and try to find a 12" screen with 1200x800 resolution.
I thought I just paSS ON THAT INFO because it's not noted any where. -

You might be able to trick the software into obliging if you set the display properties to 1024 x 768 (or higher). You can then pan the desktop within the visible Window.
If you like the overall design of the NC10 then the 12.1" NC20 may suit you. You can get it from Newegg. Overall performance is similar to the NC10 but the bettery life isn't quite as good.

Canon DPP refuses to install
Adobe elements RAW Converter can not be tweaked
unless I'm missing something
I download Faststone Raw Viewer (its free)
and that seems to work as a viewer..
Also Window 32 bit has a Raw Viewer and wont install -

The underlying problem is that graphics applications, with a load of menus and toolbars, take up so much of the available window space that the programmers decided that it is better to not let the program install and/or run.
So you need more resolution, either by going for a bigger screen or getting something, such as the Sony P series, with a very high resolution screen.

Hi guys!
I have a question for you all: I am planning to get my girlfriend an NC10. She loves its design. Unfortunately all the stores that sell that here in Finland sell it with Windows XP in Finnish, which is unacceptable for us.
What's the best way to get an English Windows XP on the NC10? It doesn't have an optical drive, so using an English WinXP CD with the provided key will not work. So I have a few questions:
1) Is there any way to change WinXP's language without reinstalling it? I heard of a Windows XP Multilingual User Interface thing, can it change the OS language from Finnish to English?
2) Is the Finnish WinXP key also valid for an English WinXP operating system?
3) Can the English WinXP be installed from another source apart from an external optical drive (like a USB flash drive)?
4) Are the drivers for the NC10 hardware (webcam+microphone in particular) available online?
We would prefer these options because the local stores offer 2 years of warranty vs. the online sites we saw which offer only 1 year, plus no shipping would be necessary. -
Living in UK and having bought locally, I've not had this sort of problem but I did some looking through my Windows Control panel to see if it was possibly do-able
The following looks as if it would work, but there are no guarantees...
No.1, I feel sure you're going to need a copy of the Windows XP disk, copied onto a USB stick using another computer; Windows is going to ask for it to re-install language files.
No. 2 The Drivers can be accessed through the following URL...
http://www.sammynetbook.com/plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?4996
this is also another good source of NC10 Information (if you 'back-out' to the forums section).
No. 3 I hope the basic language on dialog boxes is English, but if not, I've given counts up/down so you can choose the right Region and Language...
To do which... Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel. click on the 30th Icon Regional and Language Options (a Clock and Globe) this takes you to a different box, the first tab (automatically selected on mine) is Regional Options It (probably) says Finnish in the selection box, click the arrow to show the full list English (United Kingdom) is the 27th line down just in case it is written in Finnish.
At the bottom of the page is another selection box clicking on this, the 15th line UP from the bottom is United Kingdom, select this...
Click the Middle Tab (Languages) - Clicking on the Add button again gives another small window, in the selection box choose English United Kingdom (27th from top) - up near the top is a Button (Details) click this Again near the top is a selection box click this (in mine there are only 2 choices both English at the moment) YOU however may have a larger choice by now... Round about now I'd suggest a reboot, keeping the USB stick handy....Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Thanks for the reply Brian!
Thanks for the drivers link, it will be very helpful.
Unfortunately the steps you described are for adding keyboard languages, not operating system languages. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
2. A Samsung OEM installation CD would install since it is tied to the Samsung hardware and doesn't use the key. I don't know what would happen if you try using a standard OEM CD but I doubt if the key is tied to the language.
3. You can share an optical drive on another computer via a network or by using a cross-over network cable.
4. The Samsung global download center is here.
Hope this helps,

Thanks a lot John!
About the Microsoft links you provided: Microsoft says that the Language Interface Pack is not available in English. In fact it seems to only have minority languages such as Catalan. Which one should I install, the Multilingual User Interface or the Language Interface Pack? I can test this on another WinXP computer we have at home, but would like to do so fast so we can buy the NC10 still today.
After further reading the link you provided, it seems you have to install the MUI over an English version of Windows, which kind of defeats its purpose. Is this correct? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
More searching (Google for "Windows XP Changing language to English" suggests that a foreign language XP may not have the English files installed.
However, I wonder what language options are offered when first booting the NC10? I can't remember.

First of all, hello to all
I bought my NC10 Last January and Ive been using it as a travel companion and study tool since. What I've noticed though, is a continuous flickering of my screen when in battery mode. I first realized it on a flight and I thought maybe the turbulence was the cause of the mild flicker.
As time goes by though, it's getting worst and worst with flickering occurring with shorter and shorter intervals in between.
Any thoughts? Or similar experiences?
The only modification I did to it was adding a 2GB DDR2 chip but i cant remember if the flickering started before or after I installed it. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Does the flickering depend on the display brightness? I understand that the brightness is controlled by turning the LED backlighting on and off at high frequency. Therefore lower brightness means longer off periods and any flickering is more likely to be noticed.
Have you applied any BIOS updates? It is possible that Samsung changed the brightness settings. Check for any newer BIOS updates.
If you have the latest BIOS update and the flickering does not go away then it is time to contact Samsung support. I don't think 2GB RAM is going to affect this problem but you should check what happens if you replace the original module. The warranty is for the hardware supplied by Samsung.
John -
Thanks for the prompt response John.
Adjusting the display brightness helps in lengthening the interval between flickers, but still they do occur.
I'll check with Samsung's utility for any updates, but what I'd really like to know was if anyone else had a similar experience with his/her machine.
Thanks once again,
Athos -
Updating the BIOS did the trick so far.
Not only i didn't have any flickering for the past hour (usually flickering starts after 15-20 mins) the machine has totally gone silent and cool with faster response...
Weird no?
Thanks again for the help -

How do you check which bios you have? I bought mine just a couple of weeks ago from Amazon and I use it at 1-4 brightness most of the time when not plugged in and use it anywhere from full brightness to a few notches down when it is plugged in and I have never seen the screen flicker.
I'm familiar with the screen flickering since my previous notebook was a 2.53GHz 15" unibody macbook pro that exhibited the flickering symptom only when the backlighting was at 1-3 notches. -
I had updated my Samsung NC10 SE a few days before I got my N120, so there has been a recent update for the NC10. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Or you can try Start > Run > DXDIAG . The BIOS version should show at the end of the BIOS info.
John -
it seems like the nc10 SE is no longer listed on amazon.com
ran a search for it just now and it no longer pops up as a search result. guess the n110 is our only option now if you want the updated version of the nc10. -

Seems with the release of the N110 the need for this item isn't really necessary, though it does have the matte rather than glossy screen. -
I replaced the hard drive in my NC10 with a WD1600BEKT (7200rpm). Here's the review: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=379623

I'm very interested in the NC10, but Samsung's web site says the Bluetooth module is a factory option and I would like to get one with this. How do you request one with Bluetooth when Samsung don't operate a customise purchase option direct with themselves, like Dell?

Edit: I just noticed you're in Swindon, so am I. Small world!
Is the Bluetooth module a standard part of the UK spec NC10s then? -
Here in Finland the NC10 also comes with BlueTooth.

I personally find the NC20 more usable because of the bigger display. It can pass as a slowish everyday portable notebook.

Hi everybody - my first post here!
I also want an upgrade on draft n, so i bought a used Broadcom XSPAN (BCM94321).
But when i streamed a special video over our network, the movie run not really proper. With the original card this movie run great without any problems.
So this card seems to be incompatible?
Now i want to try the intel 5300 with an third Aerial Antenna.
Fountainhead, a saw your pictures at flickr - great stuff!!!
Now I´ve got some questions:
(1)
Could you stream movies over your network (divx/avi) without problems?
Did you bought the shorter antenna (WAEISO3)?
(2)
Did you installed the driver from a cd or was the card directly recognized by the os (windows xp)?
(3)
Which is your max. speed you reached?
(4)
What is the difference in performance between the intel 5300 and the intel 5100 - between 2 or 3 antenna? Is it only the range?
(5)
Does the intel 5300 supports also the new draft 2.0 (2,4GHz- and 5GHz) and would you think, that this is noticeable on the NC10 by using a router like a dlink DIR-825 (draft 2.0)?
Tks a lot for infos and greetings to all! Peter -
-
Uups, sorry Fountainhead!
You are using the intel 5300. Could you stream movies over your network (divx/avi) without problems? Did you installed the driver from a cd or was the card directly recognized by the os (windows xp)?
Tks -
Can't say about XP drivers. I'm using Windows 7 and the card is automatically picked up by that OS. Th included CD has XP and Vista drivers, but I didn't need to use it. Obviously the very latest drivers would be available online on Intel's site. -
thanks for the infos. So the intel 5300 is running on the NC10 very good. Which router are you using?
I´ve got a D-Link DIR-825 and hoping that they will work together. -
BTW, I'm also only using two antennas on my 5300. You can add a third and get better performance if you need it. -
Just bought the NC10 with 2gb upgrade and external dvd burner ($523) and 9 cell battery upgrade ($65)
Very excited! -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
The 9 cell should give a few hours of run time.
Enjoy!
John -
It seems to be an Atheros XSPAN 9001 inside the DIR-825:
http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=530
Maybe the Atheros AR5008-Card is working better with the DIR-825 because of the same chipset than the Intel 5300-Card.
How would you decide? -
nc10 - ordered it on friday.. going to be delivered today.
buydig.com amazing turnaround time
Granted I live in PA and they shipped from NJ.. but great processing time -
-
I loved the NC10 but I am replacing it for something with a larger screen, as I need to be able to do real work on it.
Mine (blue) with 2GB memory is up for sale here. -
The 9 cell battery is shipping from an ebay seller in New Jersey.. So it will be a seperate shipment but the seller already shipped it out yesterday.. so I may get that either today or tomorrow.. Most likely tomorrow or thursday.
I will let you know once I receve it
