    @NBReview

I just not so long ago, got myself a R70 I just looked in my box and found the following DVD's which are: system recovery media (win-vista) and system software media....If you dont have them call samsung and ask them why you did not get them.....it also says in my manual how to reinstall vista.

    Hi.

does the R70, have only 1 speaker like the R20?

If so, do you only get mono sound, is their no balance in the audio properties

    thanks

    John.

    Hi.

    great review.

I am considering buying from Littlewoods direct on this page

It is £699.90, but i have an 10% discount code, and a buy now start paying next november code also.

Is their anyway to know if it has nVIDIA GO 8400M or 8600M, as the website does not say.

would i see much difference in performance if it is an 8400M anyway?

If anybody wants the discount code let me know.

    thanks

    John.

Im planning to buy the Samsung R70 and I saw on some reviews that there is room on the laptop to install turbo memory, I was wondering if its true and can you install the turbo memory or has anyone done it?

As you indicated in this thread, yours is a Hong Kong version. There's nothing stopping other countries ordering this spec from the factory. Germany has versions with both the 8400M GS and 8600M GS and bluetooth, but no signs of the hybrid HDD.

btw in cpu-z it says the FSB :Dram is 3:5 so does this mean i can put 800's in?

You can put 800MHz RAM, but it won't run any faster. 667MHz maximum RAM speed is a feature of the Intel 965 mobile chipset.

3GB is a good compromise. You won't get any significant reduction in the RAM bandwidth by having different sized modules and Vista can see and use the full 3GB. Or, if you have 512MB modules at present, replacing one with 2GB will give most of the benefits.

    There's a new R70 BIOS (09AB) dated 04 Jan 08.

There's no description of the changes. It could be Penryn compatibility but maybe something else.

    Hi John,

do you have a recommendation of a cheap but qualitatively good supplier/store for a 2GB RAM to substitute one of the factory 1 GB modules? Best within Germany?

    Thanks

I don't know any suppliers within Germany, but both MemoryC and Komplett will deliver within Europe for reasonable cost. The two modules I have linked to should be OK. I have two of the Transcend modules and I previously had a Corsair alue 1GB module.

The Peryn version of the R70 has been released in Korea. It's equipped with a 2.5 ghz peryn chip, and an updated 8600m GT GDDR3 gfx chip. Europe will probably see the updated version soon enough.

This suggests that the BIOS updates issues for most current models in early January may be to include Penryn support.

Hi all just purchased the 1gig turbo memory module, but i cannot see anything in the bios to enable this feature?
i did notice it in a previous bios (running bios 06AB at the moment)
so should i just plug it in and turn it on?
any pointers or anybody else installed one of these?

    thanks all

Turbo memory needs to have AHCI enabled, which is a different storage drive. Do you have an AHCI controller under DeviceManager's IDE ATA /ATAPI controllers? If Samsung didn't enable AHCI by default then you need to install the driver and then change a setting in the BIOS. If AHCI is enabled then you could insert the Turbo Memory and see what happens. Maybe the latest BIOS has it enabled.

Aren't there two mini-PCIe slots in the memory compartment? One holds the wireless card.

I've got a feeling that hybrid HDDs and Turbo Memory can't both work together since Turbo Memory is effectively cacheing the HDD and a hybrid HDD already has a cache.

    thanks for the replys :)

i'm going to use the bottom pci slot to fit the card, i have tried fitting it but the laptop dosn't complete loading (restarts and gets to the loading bar then does the same in a loop), i have checked the bios but can't see enable TM any where?

so it probably hasn't the driver (AHCI) installed as john suggested, so not sure what to do from this point? its not enabled in the bios, an older version of the bios had this visable. i cannot update the bios to the older version so as i say i'm stuck.

i have tried to reflash to an older bios but using the below info:

To downgrade the BIOS, you have to use the CD version of the BIOS updater, and to force the downgrade you have to enter the name of the BIOS file followed by:

    /s /x /c /nomodel_partcheck

tried the above but cannot get it to flash (my bios is 04ab) what am i missing? the disc boots into dos and i type '04ab/s/x/c/nomodel_partcheck' then i get an index of commands???

sorry to be a pain

    How about

    '04ab.exe /s /x /c /nomodel_partcheck'

ie you need to put in the full name of the BIOS file (including the extension) with the other parameters separated by spaces (I'm assuming the BIOS executable is 04ab.exe - check the name of the files on the CD).

DOS isn't clever enough to know that you want to run the .exe file. If you still don't succeed, what are the files on the CD?

I also downloaded that ISO file and when I try to look at the contents it appears to be empty.

Strange. Based on the Q45 thread

    04ab.exe /s /x /c /nomodel_partcheck

entered at the DOS prompt should work. Otherwise it is time to email Samsung support for guidance.

yes it is very strange why this won't work, & cannot see anything on the disc?
i will contact Samsung support by email i think and ask about the version of the bios i have loaded and if Turbo memory will work? to see what they suggest, thanks for your help, and i'll post back with what Samsung suggest.

Ok update on getting turbo memory to work,
got a replacement module back, still didn't work, loaded bios 09AB, still couldn't get it to work when set to Auto, but Vista picked the module up when disabled in new bios, so i remembered that someone had mentioned, that ACHI was not enabled in Vista, so followed the regedit instructions below.
and hey presto its all working.

The process in Vista seems to be less painful than in Windows XP because VISTA includes AHCI drivers by default. However, if AHCI mode was not enabled at the time you installed Vista then the new drivers will not be loaded, and if you change the BIOS setting then Windows doesn't boot.

    " Simple solution:
Start with IDE mode selected in the BIOS, and boot Windows Vista.
    Exit all Windows-based programs.
Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci
In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
Reboot, and change to AHCI mode in the BIOS. Windows will detect some changed hardware (anything connected to a SATA port). "

bit long winded but hey got there in the end, just in case anybody else fancied installing one of these and was having problems.

    thanks again for the assistance

    Ninja

Windows won't have ACHI drivers loaded unless AHCI was enabled in the BIOS at the time of Windows installation. And if the drivers aren't installed then you get a BSOD after changing the BIOS setting.

The good news is that the documentation about how to install the AHCI drivers before changing the BIOS setting has improved over the last six months.

It is very difficult to provide a quantified indication of the effect of Turbo Memory. In my experience it's very much a perception of smoother performance. Battery life may be slightly better if the HDD can power down.

DigiUK has the R70. Stocks may be tight at the moment because the Samsung factory in China shuts for a month for the Chinese New Year (which was a month ago).

i just flashed it, but for some weird reason i lost 3 keyboard combinations after flashing it (FN+WIFI ADAPTER, FN+BRIGHT UP, FN+BRIGHT DOWN) which are the ones i most used.. any ideas on this without having to go back to an older version of the BIOS thx!!!

Hi this is my first time on here so please bare with me.
I have a Samsung R70 (A007/SUK). When i bought it I misread the spec,as I thought it had bluetooth (very misleading advert). My question is does anyone know where I can buy the Bluetooth part (card ?)? As other R70 models have Bluetooth built in, the part must be available SOMEWHERE. surely?
