Kammander - I found some specs comparing the HD 7970M vs the GTX675M (GTX580M)

These specs are right on with what Eurocom released before they did the HD 7970M CrossFireX tests. I was following their results in another forum. I am sure pau1ow can comment further since they probably have a 7970M (or will get one very soon) to test with.

Good stuff mcmike. I'm set on 7970. They should release this by end of May correct?

I will try to ask my contacts at Samsung Korea next week. I deal with the higher ups on the 3DTV side so they can easily ask the other departments. Your in California right? Just want to make sure I ask for the correct country.

I had other business with Samsung and I did not want to distract or bother them but it looks like I will be finished next week with them. I was talking to a tech and they told me that the Samsung notebook is not easy to upgrade. There is a plate on the bottom of the unit that once removed, reveals 2 of the 4 ram modules and the 2 hard drives. The other 2 ram modules, CPU and GPU are all under the keyboard. I was told that unless you have worked on a Samsung notebook before, it is VERY difficult to upgrade anything inside the unit.

I have since ordered a different laptop (easier to upgrade, has the 3820QM and the 7970M – Pre order) for myself BUT I may still buy a Samsung for my wife as she is needing a new notebook as well. Not one as powerful as the Samsung but I can easily convince her so I can have two new toys to play with ;)

Will the model number for the 7970M be different?

Yeah it should. So in Canada and UK it's 100% confirmed that Samsung def will have a7970 model. As for USA, it is 100% confirmed yet? After talking with some of the Samsung reps, nobody knows. Maybe they wont release it in US?

They told me they havnt heard any news that Samsung will have 7970 card...

I called Alienware. They dont have it in stock as well. I asked them why you guys have a it as a option? He replied we will ship it as soon as they get it. But we dont have it in stock.

So I'm sure when you order it from Alienware, you dont get it till end of May. Also their "build time" at around end of May.

Another reason why I dont want Alienware is, it looks too childish. I'm planning to take this to work.

Another reason is, I dislike Alienware. Charges extra $200 for brand name. Even so their chips are w/e. Samsung is different. Fairly top notch parts.

Alienware like Sager and Clevo have it as an option (pre-order). I have yet to see a machine ship with the HD 7970M. There are some ENG samples (and possibly upgrade parts) that people have received but none shipping yet. I keep reading that mid to end of May is the time when we will see this card in the masses.

people have QS qualification samples and some are getting general availability parts i.e. OEM

but those are from eurocom, and they are known to sell QS parts.

Kammander Im still wondering why dont you try a np9170/p170em?

    That’s what I ordered through Mythlogic. P170em with a 3820QM, a 7970M and a Samsung 830 512gb SSD

When I said upgrade I meant QS parts, couldn’t think of the terminology. :) P170em = easy to upgrade later

ouch I wouldnt have bought the 3820qm, I dont need that power and the price

but great buy on 512gb 830, the best drive right now.

the clevo models are much easier to service than most laptops, excluding or perhaps including the enterprise class, and if nvidia dont go changing the mxm which we still think it wont, and currently we also think that it would be backwards compatible, you can upgrade your gpu

I hear ya but for me I need that processor. I have seen comparisons of the 3820QM being on par with last year’s mobile Extreme Sandy Bridge. As you know the 3820QM is only 45W. CAD and Mayo get ran on my CPU (notebook) all the time so you can probably understand the need for the 3820QM. I can’t see paying the price the Extremes are at. If I could get away with a lower tier processor, I would. Plus, its a business write off ;)

Yeah I really thought about getting a Sager. Getting the spec I want from Sager saves me about $200. Even if I order it now they wouldnt have it ready at my door untill end of May (possibly same with Samsung)

Another aspect is that, I never seen a Sager/Clevo laptop before. I want to be able to get hands on demo and feel how well built it is etc.

I seen and played around with the Samsung laptop (Not the 7 series) but similiar series, I really liked it.

I bought a gaming laptop in 2005 from 3rd party venders (cyberpowerinc) and I had a horrible experience. I'm just too afraid to order something that I'm not 100% sure I'll like.

With Samsung, I'll pay extra $200-300 more. I'll also be getting some spec that I dont need (blue ray, extra ram, maybe extra HD) Thats the down fall.

Overall, unless I get to see what a Sager/Clevo look/feels like I dont want to consider it. It'll be a hassle to return if I'm unhappy and I dont want to waste people from powernotebooks.com with used items etc..

Kammander - I am rolling the dice on a custom P170em Clevo in hopes that its build quality is really good. Unfortunately there are no retailers near me that have one for me to handle and play with. All of the reviews and videos say it is a great looking, well built notebook. Good for gaming as well as a business look to it.

Like I mentioned before, while I was at Samsungs HQ in Seoul not long ago, I had a chance to play with the Ivy Bridge/HD6960M version. It was orange in color and the screen was 3D. The build quality is amazing, the looks are clean and the 3D on screen looks great. You will not go wrong with the Samsung series 7 gamer unit.

Mike, did you actually order the Clevo? If so, do some benhmark test and youtube video of it haha :D

Yes there's no retails that I know of that would carry a clevo/sager =/

they have a return policy as well, I would actually check that, the build quality is quite nice, I disliked their keyboard and touchpad, but Im a spoiled man, I never found a good keyboard like the ones in the thinkpad line, and Im always looking for something close, I like my mbp keyboard and touchpad, but they could have been better, the keyboard not the touchpad.

There is an anandtech review, I actually dislike jarred walton reviews regarding notebooks, sadly thats the only thing that he does in that site. its from the last gen models, there are some chassis changes, but do check those, I think the chassis were sent from eurocom

1st post and you chose to go with that? lol

If you're still curious about Alienware, there's a Dell Sales Manager on NBR that's giving out discounted quotes to members. I personally am going with a p150EM..

Also, 7970M doesn't appear to be an option on the Dell site atm.

This tells alot more on the accessories. 200W PSU, 8 cell battery that lasts about 3.7 hours and port layout details.

As a buyer, one would like as much info as possible. ;)

The swedish Clevo builder pc-konsulten.se has the 7970m part marked as being delivered june 12, if you choose that one instead of the default 675m.

Dates differ all around the world I guess but I'm not expecting anything for another month. Really eyeing the Samsung with a 7970m so hope that 1) it will actually be released here when available and 2) it won't take ages... :)

There were few people that bought the 675M, can you guys update us.

In regard to the 8GB ExpressCache, is it a mSATA? Would it be a SATA 3 as well?

Kammander - Depending on what the notebook is being used for, the GTX580M errr I mean GTX675M is not a bad card.

It’s not like the GTX675M cannot play any of the games that are out, it’s just about how high of settings you can max out. The GTX675M got some decent FPS on most of the games from what I have seen. If your room mate is not a serious gamer, it might work out for him :)

Like I mentioned before, for me (and probably most people) it’s about longevity. I do not intend on purchasing another notebook for about 3 years. I want a GPU that will last equally as long... Keeping in mind I am not a serious gamer but when I do game, I enjoy high details.

Who knows, by the time the warranty expires, I am sure there is someone out there that can upgrade the card for your roommate. Sometimes I try to look for the positive outlook :)

can he do a tear down? its probably mxm if it is so, you can guys can upgrade the gpu, when next year new model arrives, pau1ow just got a msi gt whatever with a 7970m, it took him some heatsink modding since the heatsink from nvidia and amd are different, but its working.

I hear Samsung is not too easy to break down. As for me and him... no we dont know how to break it down. Just pc towers.

I'm going to laugh so hard if 7970 gets released in a week with a same or cheaper price.

I do have one. When you switch the jog dial to battery save mode, does it turn off the GPU and use the Intel processor GPU? Also I am sure a lot of people would be curious about the battery life of this unit?

    Thanks

I have been playing with my NP700G7C for a day now. I ordered it off Amazon and had it sent Overnight. the Samsung replaces my 2.5 year old Sony Vaio F1190X.

I considered waiting for the ATI card, but really, I don't need that much graphics power for the games I play, and I got tired of waiting. Besides, I can always buy another laptop and pass this one down to my wife as I have with my past 3 laptops.

The computer is very nice looking. The screen is the brightest I have had on a laptop and the colors pop compared to my Sony. I did not expect such a stark difference in screen quality without specifically ordering a high gamut model.

The touch sensors controlling the volume/mute/backlightling are nice and I like the performance dial.

The computer is obviously much faster than what I had, so nothing much to say there. Its as expected. So far I have only played Civ V on it, and that game is so much prettier now. I will play Skyrim tonight.

My primary motivation for purchasing a new comp was that my older Sony's fans were unbearably loud and the comp was getting hot just browsing the web. Cleaning out the fans did not help. The Samsung is very quiet and runs cool. While playing Civ V for ~3 hours straight, the fans barely went up and the air coming out was much cooler than my Sony, which could warm my whole house while gaming.

So far, my only complaint, and its small, is that the body of the laptop is prone to showing finger smudges, but they wipe away easy.

I have had 2 Sony Vaios, 2 Dells, and a Sager over the past ~12 years. This Samsung unit is far and away the best looking laptop relative to the market in general, that I have purchased.

I have been playing with mine for here for a day as well and i am loving it.
After having the Asus G74,G75 , Msi Gt780 ,Alienware Mx17r3 ,etc this is my easy favorite.
    Pros:
    Best screen ever. :D
Game mode pops the colors and contrast. My games looks better here than on my Hannspree 28 inches 1900x1200 .
The build quality is top notch.
The sound is the best ever ,amazing i mean.
Upgraded the HD1 with a Sandisk 240gb extreme and this thing is flying.
Cpu got on the 75C max while gaming here in Hawaii.
Played Bulletstorm last night at 50 fps average .

    Cons:
TF2 game had some stutering .Did a fresh reinstall and is fine now playing at 70fps average .

Kammander - I decided to pre order a Clevo P170EM from Mythlogic (I like their care, upgrade policy and the fact they service their own computers). I did however just find out that I have to go back to Korea SO I will most likely buy the Ivy Bridge, 3D screen with the HD 7970M version Samsung notebook. Unfortunately it is a Lamborghini Orange color but... I do like Samsung. I will buy it for the wife ;) As for Warranty, I will just buy a Square Trade warranty, plus my credit card gives me an amazing warranty. Not sure when I am going to Korea but it will be soon. I will probably have my Clevo P170EM before I leave though so maybe in June.
