I may have found an alternative. The Thinkpad W520. It's not that much more expensive and the spec and battery life are even better than Samsung. The screen is meant to be excellenttoo. The only problem is it's incredibly ugly and lacks some perks like ExpressCache

The W520 is a good $400 more expensive and is far heavier and chunkier. They're entirely different types of laptops (business grade vs thin and light). Sure, the W520 has better specs, but in that weight class you should start looking for sager/clevos. There's also a lack of numpad and backlit keyboard (though the thinklight mitigates this)

Like I said before, and I'll say again...The ONLY substitute for this laptop is a Macbook Pro.

Was at MS store yesterday too to see if its out, unfortunately its not. Then I saw the sony vaio 13.3inch one for 999 and includes the battery sheet ant another 25% off total purchase if over 1000... plus if i trade in my notebook for 150 that makes it less than 600 + tax.. very tempting..

when will this ever come out.. :(

Was in BB again today to check on another laptop for my wife. One a second look of the Series 7, the extreme vertical viewing angles still are not great but looking at the screen head on and even with a slight deviation to left or right (to assess horizontal viewing angles) the screen was decent. It actually held it's own in comparison to a Lenovo and the QX411 on either side of it. Actually with the matte screen it edges out the those two because there were reflections and there was a crisp look to it. So to sum it up here, for normal viewing I think the screen is fine unless your usage involves standing with the screen at hip height as in the BB store.

My worries about the screen have subsided considerably and puts this laptop in the "not a matter of if but when to buy" territory for me. The 15.6" screen doesn't seem too large for me but I would really like to check out a 14" in person. Any idea as to when the 14" model will be available?

Anyone have any information from the Microsoft Store? I preordered, and I haven't been able to get an answer if the expected ship date of 11/01 was still accurate....

(Currently laptopless, so hoping to get some information...)

And that exactly what I mean that big companies do anything to get you in and get spend your money. They really think that we (customers) don't know what's good.

Already discounted. £999.99 from 17/09/11 to 25/10/11.
    Now £799.99. Save a total of £200.00
    Screen resolution 1366 x 768 pixels (HD)
Up to 4 hours' battery life

Sorry Samsung, but it's getting ridiculous.

This isn't samsung but rather the retail shop. They do this with all laptops including macbooks. For example Asus u46sv was £899 at comet whilst everywhere else had it for 699. Soon after they were advertising a £200 discount on the laptop when in fact the £699 price is the normal price.

Good summary. To add to it, there are essentially 2 class of TN screens on the market.
Class A: Low viewing angle, low contrast (usually around 150), low color gamut.
Class B: Good viewing angle, good contrast (usually 450+), high color gamut (72%/95%)

Every single notebook that has a 1366x768 resolution screen belongs to class A, you can confirm this on notebookcheck. Every notebook sold at bestbuy is class A, except for the macbooks.

Most 1600x900 is class A (exceptions are some sony, thinkpad and alienware (mx14) models). Most 1080p screens are class B.

To get Class B: u will have to buy online (with proper selection of screen upgrade via good research), buy a macbook or replace the screen yourself ($150 via ebay and its usually shipped from overseas). Why ebay? Because they usually are the most reliable in terms of stated model/quality/spec (I have upgraded quite a few screens...)

I have profiled (both visually and using a spyder) the samsung sold at best buy, its a class A screen. As mentioned by Zeth, you will probably never care till u used and exprienced a class B screen. And once u have you will properly never go back (unless the trackpoint on the thinkpad is more important to you).

How feasible is it to replace the screen on a machine like this? Is there a good online guide suitable for people with low to moderate hardware-hacking experience?

Agree, if you use crap screen now you are not going to complain. A few month ago I use my desktop more than my laptop I have notice the low quality screen on my laptop, but recently I rarely use my desktop and I don't find myself complain as often as I use to.

If you are going to use the Samsung exclusively, I don't think you will complain until of course you use a better screen often.

If I read your comment correctly, as long as you didn't just recently come from using a super good display, the display won't be a problem.

    I think I agree

    Personal Rant:

I'm starting to feel as though as long as I have a good desktop monitor like the IPS I have now or better, I should be ok with even a crappy notebook display. I watch all my movies on the IPS monitor via the notebook's HDMI output and I just do my work on the notebook at the library. I'm also starting to find that I don't like my Envy's chiclet keyboard at all. I get so many typos on it! I kind of miss my old Dell's business keyboard. Unless my mindset changes, I may end up going with a Lenovo that's got more thickness, weight, but a preferable keyboard. A crappy TN panel won't be much to cry about as long as I'm watching movies on the IPS. If I wanna game, I'll shell out more $$$ for a desktop.

Oh ffs... It looks as if Samsung is going to release the UK variant with a 6490M instead of a 6750M.

Why the hell can't they get something as simple as a product release right?

    Hi

If its true and SAMSUNG has compromised the Graphics chip for the UK market, then its a no go for me. Its true contempt for the Uk buyers , Very often we have the higest prices and lowest specs. SHAME on samsung if they dont give us what we rightfully deserve and pay for the BEST parts. I want a 6750M in my samsung , nothing less. If you can provide this to other countries accross europe then you should do the same for UK. I have never encountered such a deceptive advertising campaign. Had sympathies for them when Apple was making life hard for them , but now im thinking they deserve it...im fed up of UK market being treated as unimportant.

*blahblahblah typical rant based on copy paste wrong specs from random websites who don't even have the laptop is stock*

It's quite obvious its copy pasta when you read the same commercial babble over all description, that the title states 1GB video ram, and i believe the 6490m version has not even 512mo of vram.

We were discussion class B TN display replacement (the procedure is described in the technical notice usualy), but, do you think it's possible to find a compatible display since there is the maxscreen technology involved ?

Some e-retailers are already selling the 6750 in the UK. All i'm looking for is a i5 processor coupled with the 6750 graphics card. That should suffice for autocad, matlab etc

I'm really astonished at how many people in this thread are treating a giant electronics conglomerate like they're a cheating spouse or something. It's a laptop, for chrissake. It's not a personal affront to you if they put a different chip in. Don't buy it if you don't want to, but you don't have to soapbox about it.

I would trust Samsung's site more than any of the sites as far as specs go, and for the NP700Z5A-S01UK, on the UK site, it is listed as having the HD6750M.

There are always issues where staff manning retail sites don't know and make mistakes. As long as the model number is the one you are purchasing, the manufacturer is generally the best one to trust.

hmmmmm, I dont know who to believe anymore lol, my heads been spinning for 2 months now with all the confusion samsung has been projecting about this product. i.e. diff S numbers from UK etc!!

Anyway, took the plunge and just ordered the NP700Z5A-S01UK from dabs.com, taking a risk but pretty sure this is the top spec version (on samsung uk website as this?!). Hopefully will be out shortly if they've started filtering through in Germany.

My ? is though- I thought the Japanese/Far East market would have this in advance of everyone else, maybe they already have?
