Any chance of this thing coming with an FHD screen? That's the main thing that's putting me off of this thing. That and I'm a bit concerned about cooling/battery life. Looks great otherwise...
-
Pretty sure he says it is the 5 Series. List as the video first starts.
-
no 14inch coming out?

There's a 14" NP700Z3C expected in Scandanavia later this month.

Nice! the 17'3 model is listed there as well.
I might fly back to Helsinki around the 29th hopefully it will be in stock.
Unless it's cheaper here in Holland. -
Nice find John, thanks for the link. Any idea when it will be released in the U.S -
I think that it will be out around June or July instead because the Ivy Bridge Non-Quad Core units are being released in June.

You need to do your own research on this. Firstly, there's no guarantee that all countries will get the full range of the Samsung notebooks and secondly that Samsung and the retailers will want existing stock to be shifted before bringing in a new model. There also appears to be a pattern of letting different countries get different new models first. I think the US was first to get the new 17" gamer.
John -
Ouch.
Roughly $1840 USD, available May 16 in Finland -
Damn according to that website the 14inch laptop has only the 630M... They could have at least put in a 640M.
-
Hey guys, just wanted to get your opinion on the 15 vs 17 in of the laptop. Do you think the FHD and 650M is justifiable against the 1600x900 and 640M? The only reason I'm debating getting the 15 in is because I'm starting university in the fall and don't want to be (awkwardly) lugging around a 17in. I plan to do some gaming and will be in computer engineering, so a 15in is decent real estate for me, but the 650M just looks so tempting!
-
The resolution in itself is not a problem, but the quality of the display in the 15" is very poor (low contrast and high black values). So far it seems the 17" has an much better screen.
And the 17" is small for an 17" laptop and weight is about on level with most 15" laptops (just below 3Kg).
GT640M, GT650M and GTX660M is the same chip(same amount of pipelines), just different clockspeeds, so the GFX chip is still very powerfull. -
Based on what information would you know that the 15" has a worse display? It still hasn't been released to the public yet
-
I believe he is talking about current 15" Sandy Bridge series.
-
As far as I know the ivy bridge version uses the exact same display as the sandy bridge display. I hope I'm wrong though.
The black value and contrast is worse than for most cheap 1366 x 768 displays, which put me off ordering the 700Z5A and went with asus N55SF instead - which isn't as slim and light. Now I'm looking into the new 700Z7C. -
The graphics card and the lack luster display are the only things stopping me from going with the 15in (whenever it comes out). Looks like I'll just have to wait to check it out in a store and maybe find the panel model. 17in has too big of a footprint for my needs.
-
It wouldn't really make sense only to update the screen on the 17" IVB models
-
I agree, especially since the screen is THE one big thing that has been critisized by the reviews and on social media on the 15". I really think they are going to do somthing about it.
-
There was never an chrones 17" sandy bridge for sale was there? Not around here at least. Only the gamer 17" was released, and the gamer 17" had an very good screen.
-
I do NOT get the supposed problem with the Series 7 displays! Mine's beautiful. I'm sitting here looking at it right next to a 1080p panel on an Asus N53SV, and the Asus is unable to display subtle color variations and shading in Wikipedia and Google that the Samsung displays with ease. If this display is really considered that bad then the Asus must be awful...and I guess only a 95% color gamut qualifies as "good?"
-
The problem is really with the contrast. The blacks are too bright.
-
It has been reported that there is a large quality difference between the panels for the S7: some are good and some aren't good enough. Their tolerances for QC must have been pretty important and some were really really disppointed with it. I checked the S7 out at my local retail store and honestly the screen was just terrible compared to what I saw on cheaper lower-res screens. Considering that the S7 isn't a low-end cheap computer I actually expect a decent screen and for all users, not just the lucky ones. Not necessarily MBP-perfect but decent.
-
Same. Mine is alot better than any of my other notebook screens, especially after using the ICC file.
But then again, I mainly use mine for work and don't do much stuff that uses alot of dark colors, and this is what most people are complaining about I think.
Even the gaming I do on it is pretty bright, but perhaps it's an issue if you are playing Fear or something simillar.
-
Well, for an 1800$+ laptop I'd expect an display that is alot better than an average 1000$ laptop.
-
just saw and touched 15 inch version at Futureshop in Toronto. Didn't have time to ask to start up the laptop to examine the screen (display model was not yet available). But overall, it looked awesome. I am 100% sure it's a new NP700Z5CH laptop.
am I mistaken?! or it's actually out? -
Sounds about right, since Samsung CA has it listed on their website already.
-
The 17" Ivy Bridge is selling for CAD$1300:
Samsung Series 5 17.3" 3rd Gen Intel Core i7-3610QM Laptop (NP550P7C-T01CA) - Silver : Ultrabooks - Future Shop
They refer to the Ivys as "3rd Generation". No signs of 15" yet -
Yeah be careful the video card is a crappy GT 630MX, not the 650M like on the other thread. That's why it costs much less.
Oh and it's not a series 7 thats a series 5 (also noticed it is listed as an ultrabook
lol 17 inches...)

Here's the 15" specs on Samsung Canada (NP700Z5C-S01CA):

I was searching on the web for information on the Series 7 15.6" release date and found this:
"We plan to release a Samsung SERIES 7 CHRONOS 15.6” model with Ivy Bridge in the second half of 2012."
It was a comment posted here:
https://www.youtube.com/all_comments?v=EBHmxxUtmm4
(about 1/5 down from the top of the page.. just search for "second half" and you'll find it.)
by a user known as "SamsungNotebook" on YouTube. It's obvious that SamsungNotebook officially represents the company from the user's uploads, but I certainly hope this information is wrong, as a release that far away is highly disappointing. Then again, that comment was posted 2 months ago...
Has anyone heard any other information? -
Well it might make sense if they release 15 inch models with a dual core processor, since these processors won't be out until june or so...
-
I hope there's a version that comes with Windows pro. I realize I'm probably going to miss out on Windows 8 which sucks, but I don't want to also have to pay for an upgrade from Home to Pro
-
What is the point of having Pro over Home version? It is almost the same thing.
-
So I guess the 14inch won't be released until later?
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
The 14" NP700Z3C is listed on some Scandinavian websites so perhaps it will be released there first. When / if it appears in other countries remains to be seen.
John -
The deal breaker thing is that Pro has RDP (although there is a hack to enable it on home, which may be permanently disabled in future service packs). The other important component is XP mode. There are a bunch of old programs that I need every once in a while that only on XP, so it's nice to just pop open a shell and use the program
-
Actually, I find the critical features in Pro to be the ability to back up to a network drive, and location-aware printing.
-
Anyone know the specs for that laptop on the video everyone mistook for the new series 7 chronos? I'm talking about the one with the stainless steel like finish, it looks really good!

I had this problem with my NP900X3B which comes with W7 Home. My work-around was to install VMware Player + XP (I had a brand new XP disc lying around). My mistake was not using nLite to build an updated XP installation disc so the XP installation became bloated.

Samsung unveils latest addition to its award winning notebook category - Notebook Series 5 550P - Laptop - Press Release - HEXUS.net
Samsung announced their Series 5 models, and they include JBL speakers and a 650m with 2gb. I know that its not in the "thin and light" class and that it will only have a 1366x768 resolution screen. I would be really dissapointed if indeed the 650m is not matched in the series 7. The only difference between the 3610qm that will be in the series 5 and the 3615qm in the series 7 is a slightly lower clock speed. Not to mention it has a blue-ray DVD drive as well. -
very interesting, a series 5 with a core i7 CPU
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
It appears that the quad core 17.3" NP550P7C is already in stock (and it's eligible for the VAT refund) but the 15.6" NP550P5C hasn't yet arrived and will have an i5 CPU.
John -
omg.........why such low res....................
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Perhaps that's because it is the Series 5. If you want a better screen then you pay more for a Series 9 or Series 9.
Now let's get back to this being a Series 7 thread.
John -
The Series 7 - Will Samsung update the screen for better?
-
John posted a link here for the Series 7 14inch IB, did it say what screen res it was? I hope its atleast 1600X900
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I can't understand the words but the numbers here say 1600 x 900.
John -
Thank you so much John.
