    Nice review!
Seems like a pretty powerful 14" laptop, AW M11x is only 11.6" so performance wise they are pretty comparable , size wise not even close.
    Good job.

If you could run Furmark burn-in test and post a screenshot, it would be much appreciated.

Another request: a few screenshots of the screen with a dark or black background from straight on, and a couple angles.

The best would be a black background, I'd like to see the black levels (how black the blacks are), and the viewing angles. Thanks very much.

This looks much better than the original leaked specs, which suggested the R480 would have integrated graphics and the R580 would have a 310m. Samsung's Singapore site shows that it's out there with a 2.4GHz i5, too. I can't find it on a North American site. I'm guessing it doesn't have switchable graphics though, since there's no mention of it in the specs.

If this laptop becomes available for purchase in the United States (at a reasonable price) before Asus get their i5s out, I'll probably get one. I like it better than Sony's CW because 1600x900 on a 14" would give me a headache. The Touch of Color design is also very nice.

I am in Canada, i bought it from a local store
    www.memoryexpress.com
and yes, many site 's spec showed the r480 only come in 310
but the one i got is 330m in Canada( samsung.ca show this)

This lap top looks good, and perform nice

i will take some more close up on this laptop

    will post it tonight

Did you try to run it with just the default settings when it loads (use extreme burnin mode)? This is mainly to test the temperature of the GPU under extreme load, so the resolution is irrelevant. (it will display a temperature graph)

try it in lower resolutions... Is your screen glossy or matte? It looks kinda matte. Its pretty cool performance, too bad no blu ray drive, where did you get it from? Too bad the keys aren't backlit.

Thanks for the furmark test fury! I understand you'll run the full test later? I appreciate it because it's my primary concern about this notebook. Although it looked like it was starting to cap at 76 deg. which is fine, it might have gone 5-10 more durint the full test.

The cooling design does not look sufficient to me having no air intake and such a powerful GPU.

Thanks for the full furmark test. I've been burned with laptops with poorly designed cooling systems and higher end GPUs before. While 81/84 peak is within spec for the GPU (i doubt i'd worry unless it went past 90), it's still pretty toasty.

When i got my asus (with a gtx260m) my temps were 84 max or so when i got it. Three months later they peaked at 106 one night before i sent it in for RMA.

I will say this: I will never buy a notebook designed for gaming that has an insufficient cooling design.

Asus is notorious for throwing a high end cpu/gpu into a poorly designed enclosure, and a horrible screen but an attractive pricetag. While this Samsung looks to be fine, i just don't trust it. I'll stick with a company that specializes in mobile gaming from now on.

    i understand,
when i tell my friends i got a samsung laptop,
    their first reaction was,,,,
    "WHAT?? SAMSUNG???"
" does it even make laptop !!??"
    "never heard of Samsung Laptop"

but i think , because the company is new to laptop business, it will try it's best to do a good job on these product, inorder to build the name upon it.

In truth, so far it looks to be a very attractive deal, and nothing from you've posted should really deter someone from buying one, but it still makes me nervous due to my experiences with other companies.

    this only time will tell..

The only disadvantage of owning this samsung notebook is....

    info!!!

i havn't even seen any other people feedback about this laptop..
( not really up for sell in US,, only canada for now in North america)

i really want to crack this machine open!!!!! as after i open the back cover
other then the memory and harddrive ( see the photo i have)
i can also see the CPU!! but the cooling system is blocking the cpu. so i will have to remove the cover to get to the cpu..

The cpu is on a socket which mean it can be upgraded!!!!!!!!

Samsung have been making notebooks for some years but have only been selling them in North America under the Samsung name for just over one year. This is the result of an agreement made with Dell some years ago for Dell to sell the Samsung Q30 as the Latitude X1.

Samsung usually provide generous cooling systems on their notebooks. One consequence of this is that R70 owners didn't start getting problems with their nVidia GPUs until after the end of the normal one year warranty period.

to me it is really solid..

only thing some people may not like it is...
    it is red/black color.

    i have no problem ,

i recommand people to go check out the samsung R4X0 series (430/480)
    in their local store...

    i like it alot..
it is 5.03 lb not too heavy for a 14" with this hardware.

i believe when more games take advantage of mult core...
the core i5 's 2 core 4 thread setting will fly..

so the only 2 things that people will not like...

    1)RED

    2) Battery Life.., it is around 3 hours.
can't expect too much from the core i5 430m

i will keep an eye on aftermarket battery for this laptop.

Hey furyagain, nice review! Thanks for the info :)

The red color is also something I'm not quite sure about. I think I'll check that out in person when I'm at a local store that sells some r480s. Unfortunately there seems to be no official release date for Germany yet :(

Does anyone of you know if there's the possibility to get the notebook with an i3-300m cpu and the geforce 330m? I want to save some money and don't really need the i5 but the more powerful gpu would be nice...

So, it looks like it ships with Win7 32 and not 64?

Hey furyagain, I checked your link again and it seems like that this model still has a Geforce 310m. The 330m in the headline applies to the cpu which is an i3-330m. Just check the specs at the bottom of the product page:

This is very misleading by NCIX.com. But i still hope they'll release it with an i3-330m and the Geforce 330m :D

Nevermind ^^ The headline on the product page really is misleading. I also thought that they meant the 330m gpu. Now I just hope that they'll release it here with my desired config or that the i5 430m version won't cost too much in €.

    Nonetheless I've got two questions:

    1) You stated that the battery life is about 3h. Is that on power saver mode?

    2) Does the glossy surface scratch and/or smudge easily? Samsung promotes this thing with the term "DuraCase"... does it hold up to this name?

    Thanks! :)

yea> ofcause this kind of laptop can't run everything full power and still have 3 hr battery life..

    glossy surface
?? you mean the screen or the casing???
the casing seems pretty tough, I do love the red/black color of it>>>

So see one then you will know

    Hello
I'm a student from Korea (Pardon my english please). You seemed to know a lot about laptops(notebooks) so I wanted to ask you some questions. I have little knowledge about computers, benchmarks and things like that. I'm not a complete idiot about computers though. I want to be able to play Call of Duty;Modern Warfare2 and Left4Dead2 with High Quality settings fluently.
    Here are my questions
Which VGA would perform similarly to an Xbox360 graphic standard?
Which VGA would perform my needs(?) well?
I like the Samsung R580 with the i5-520 and Geforce 330m. Would this be suitable for my gaming?
Is it true that you need more cores to be able to play online game fluently, whilst you need more faster GPU clocks(?) to play High Graphic Quality games?
I'm sorry if I bothered you.
    Please Reply ASAP
    Bye
    from Min K K
