I'm not the heaviest user but I browse the web a bit and text.
When I play games, it doesn't last as long - only 2-3 days ;)

For some reason though, it never shows up in the battery usage bit on my handset - maybe because it's a leaked pre-release ROM or something...

    I have a Motorola Defy.
Seriously, it's just the best handset out there for battery life before you even start tweaking it.

It's ruggedised, which adds to the size a bit - there's a seal on the battery cover/around the battery compartment which makes that bit of the phone that bit chunkier than on other handsets. No svelte slide-in batteries like Johnny's Desire HD...
But it's not that thick really - 1.5mm thicker than the HTC Desire or Desire HD. It could only be considered 'thick' in comparison to the iPhone4 or the Galaxy S, both of which are pretty ridiculously thin...

As for the actual battery, it's just 1,540mAh - a mere 40mAh more than the Galaxy S.

What makes the Galaxy S suck battery is the S-AMOLED. On a white screen it's using 3-5x the amount of power that it takes for an LCD to make the same. On black/mostly black screens, it uses 1-2x less power than an LCD.

It's the wild swings in battery usage that make battery stats for an AMOLED device completely unrealistic.

I am a new owner of a Samsung Epic with Android 2.2. I have been able to tether my phone, but am unable to connect to any PPTP VPNs (my work and home). I've done some research on this, and haven't been able to find any solutions that work for me. Does anyone know how to get PPTP VPN through tethering working? Is this a Sprint limitation or a Android limitation? It seems other people have this problem with other carriers too. If anyone can help that would be great.

I'll chime in. My Optimus T (same thing as the S, V, U, etc) can play Angry Birds fairly well with the graphics option on low, but still has a hard time after you launch the bird(s) and when there's some action on the screen.
Almost unplayable on normal graphics settings, but Angry Birds Rio played fine from what I recall.

IMHO, 3D is a fad. I'd have strong reservations on buying a 3D handset. Though the other parts are pretty great... the new Snapdragon SoC is fantastic. Only thing wrong with it, is that since the Snapdragon's dual core implementation is a dual A8, and not a dual A9, the next generation of A9 SoC's from TI, NVIDIA, and Samsung will show it up... BIGTIME. A 1GHz dual-core A9 can almost keep up with a 1.5GHz dual-core A8 Snapdragon. Overclock an A9, and it will show everyone who's boss.

Honestly, I think I'm going to wait until the second generation of A9 or first generation of A15 (Kal El) to upgrade my Captivate. Tegra 2 is stale, especially on the GPU side. TI will always be one GPU generation behind. And Samsung, I'm just unsure of. Mali400 is ok, but I would have stayed PowerVR if I were Samsung.

It's an Android limitation. It has to do with it's implementation of WPA Supplicant.

    Just got my Optimus S.

Rooting it isnt a simple process  but theres Gingerbread available for it!
That could help with the game performance too.

Im yet to actually try it, charging up the battery

yeah im in no way interested in the 3D. i just like it for the screen and CPU.

Hmm wow, what the hell are they using an A8 for then? lol

How long will it be before we start seeing dual A9's available?

In june ill be able to switch to sprint. so itll depend what they have.

Dual A9's are already available, in the Tegra 2, Exynos, and OMAP4 devices. It's just that the GPU performance in no way matches up to CPU performance.

Out of all the A9 SoC's I've seen so far, it's Apple's A5 SoC that is truly balanced. It has a dual-core A9 CPU, and a PowerVR SGX543MP2. The GPU that Apple picked has 3-4x the performance of the Tegra 2 GPU.

? I have never shamed myself with that! :p

I think you mean the NGP. I WILL be getting one of those. ;)

AFAIK, it's not fixable ATM. Gingerbread fixes that, but I'm only able to confirm that on the Nexus S... and since it's a pure Google Experience phone, I'm not sure if that functionality will be carried over to the other OEM's implementations.

The Evo 3D seems to have that beaten in (most) benchmarks.

If I'm not mistaken, it's OMAP4. Dual-Core A9, and a PowerVR SGX540. Same GPU I'm using in all three of my Galaxy S based phones. :) The 540 is a beast.

Hmm, so this summer ill be able to switch to Sprint and get a new phone.
They'll have the Evo 3D and should have the Optimus 3D available, which one should i get?

The good thing is, i think about a year after ill be able to get a new phone. So it wont be such a big deal if something new comes out after i get it.

Thanks again for the link HAL, I'd rep you if I could, but the system thinks I do it too often!

I guess it trying to flash Speedmod or a new Rom through the stock recovery is not a good idea huh?

Damn, Froyo update for the VM Intercept got pushed back...again. It was originally scheduled for March 25, then April 1, then "first week of April", now "some time in April".

And it sucks because there are no really good unofficial ROMs for this phone.

Honestly 3d is not the main selling point of the 3ds to me. I will buy it, and keep 3d off. I just think nintento "gets" the handheld market more than sony does. I do not want a home console experience on my portable. If I want to play ps3 quality games I will do so at home, on my HDTV with surround sound.

Thanks for the follow up Ahl.
I ordered my wife the purple one today. (She had a 1 year upgrade ready, and I got them to bump it to the full upgrade.) It should be here tomorrow so I should get a chance to play with it then.

Now I have to find a used one for me. Too bad the Evo is still so expensive, that's the one I really want.

Yeah, SPB it seems is clutching stubbornly onto their same business model that they had when Win Mo was king. That pricetag may have flew then, as apps were more expensive and people expected to pay that much, but now....no, that's way too expensive.

Alright guys, found a handful of phones to tide me over until September. Would love some people to weigh in on the choices. Keep in mind, these are replacing my HTC Touch Pro 2 from Sprint. I'm planning on craigslist/ebaying the thing off, for $100-$150. Whatever I can get.

LG Optimus S - Used, ~$50 - $75 (all found on eBay. Trusted seller, but it seems like it can be hit or miss as far as past abuse is concerned)
Samsung Epic 4G - (Gently) Used - $175 shipped (found on the B/S/T on androidforums.com.)

I'd love to jump into the HTC Evo 3D this fall when my upgrade rolls around. Would it make the most sense to buy cheap, save the cash now, or buy the more expensive phone, and hope for a higher resale value down the road?

The Epic's a great choice esp. if you use your TP 2's keyboard. If you don't though, Optimus S might be worth a look, given it's lower price. Keep in mind that its a mid range device with a smaller screen (so adjust your expectations accordingly) and you should be fine

WidgetLocker aside, is there any way of customising the lock screen?
