@HAL: is the Arc coming to AT&T?

Not in the short term, AFAIK. Our deal with SE went south when they called out AT&T as the culprit behind withholding the X10a 2.1 update. Didn't bother me in the least, because we were..LOL. But I guess some of the board members didn't like it.

Serious question: Are there any data tether users in this thread who aren't on a data tethering plan?
-
Guilty as charged!!
-
I've been tethering my Intercept on Virgin Mobile every day for over a month now, since I haven't had internet at home.
I use the free version of PDAnet...the only restriction is you can't access secure (https) websites through the free version, but I'm not going to spend $30 on the full version just to do that. The only secure sites I really use are Gmail and my online banking, both of which I can just do directly on the Intercept if I need to.
My plan is the standard $25/month no-contract BeyondTalk plan, which includes 300 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data. -
Im not, and I tethered several times last month. Im on T-mobile prepaid. I do buy web passes and tether. I once played CoD BO over 3G
-
Yep.. been tethering my nexus one for a long time (please don't come after me HAL
)
On another note though, is ATT still looking at a late arpil launch for the galaxy s 2? Or has it been delayed? -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I would be careful. We're starting to look at TTL on connections.
Only the really excessive accounts are getting tagged, as of right now. That's all I can say on the matter.
But yes... It's been delayed. We were hoping Apr 25-26th, but since Samsung has come out and announced a speed bump to 1.2GHz... that date has been pushed back. -
(for both responses). I am really looking forward to the GS2... the wait is killing me.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
The Infuse is still on track though.
-
Is AT&T going to be getting anymore Android/WP7 keyboard phones anytime soon?
-
The tech nerd in me just can't justify buying an infuse when the gs2 is around the corner. However, if the off contract price is $399 like the inspire was, maybe I will pick one up to hold me over until the GS2 is finally released
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
We should be carrying the Xperia Pro at some point, but not too soon.
EDIT: mrXniick... The Infuse will be $499 off contract. It's the S-AMOLED+ that pushes the price up. -
The Xperia Pro doesn't launch 'til like June or July according to SE.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
You're probably right... I have it pegged late June. -
Gah...I wish Verizon got the Xperia Pro.
-
Have SE ever released a CDMA handset?
-
They've never had the best relationship with Verizon so ...Xperia Play's their first handset on VZW, but they did do one handset for Sprint:

What are you using to get your phone's display on your computer? Can you control the phone from that app? Windows Mobile had an awesome application called MyMobiler which I loved, but I couldn't find a decent analog for Android.
-

I'm running CM7 with VNC Server.
And yep, full control of the phone from the window on my desktop. I use it like iTunes.

Alright guys, I know I've dragged this on for a week now, but after reading everyone's advice, and browsing random android forums, I decided to get a Samsung Epic 4g + accessories. Picking it up for $175 shipped. (Looks to be a pretty sweet deal).
The guy doesn't have the original SD Card with the phone, so he's putting in a 2gb. I'll fill that up too fast, as I'll be using this as my media player as well. The problem is, I don't know the differences in Class X vs Class Y Micro SD cards, and if the price differences are even worth it. Looking to have an 8gb or 16gb card. (Prefer a 16gb, but don't want to pay more than about $20-$25).
Any advice for what the best Micro SD card is for the money? -

I just registered my class for advanced android programming. How are your experiences while programming with android?
-
Get the fastest card you can, so class 10.
If you're moving apps onto the card then it makes a difference and if you record video in HD its a must.
Any brand name you've heard of should be fine. -
My prepaid Galaxy s 4g picks up the 4g network, and its fast!

any recomended app that can keep track of gas, maintenance, vin #, plates, insurance?

Very nice! The Galaxy S is probably the only phone of the current crop that has few problems keeping up with the dual-core superphones. The CPU isn't quite as powerful, but graphics wise it's about equal to Tegra 2/Exynos. Like Step666 said, get the highest class you can swing... I'm running a 4GB microSD in my Captivate and it's a class 2... slow as dirt for anything but playing music off of.
Android is Java in a sandbox, in another sandbox, on top of Java, on top of Linux.
You're going to get REALLY SUPER familiar with Smali/Baksmali and Eclipse.
"4G". LOL. What are your speedtest results? I'm guessing around 4.5-5Mbps down, and around 1-2Mbps up? -
Wow Nice!
Nah it has to be higher, i get about that on 3G
-
I just got a text message from Virgin Mobile...apparently the 2.2 update for my Intercept will be available "starting April 11th", whatever that means...probably going to have to wait a few more weeks after that.
-
Yep, right on. 5.14 down, 1.56 up.
I guess 4g/3g is kinda slow in AL. -
Still equals the average speeds that Verizon's LTE network provides...

Eh... Verizon's LTE network gets me about 10-15Mbps down and around 3-5Mbps up. Verizon's network shames most every other carrier. Sprint's WiMAX looks on in envy.Step666 said: ↑Still equals the average speeds that Verizon's LTE network provides...Click to expand...
Well, it's not true 4G. It's HSPA+. Technically 3.75G. Combine that with T-Mobile having atrocious backhaul in most areas...[>>ahl395<<];7347961 said:A little higher than mine, but not by too much.

When the day comes that one can get 15-20Mbps off T-Mobile's HSPA+, Verizon's LTE will be hitting around double that. -
Did you not see the story a week or two back in which some third-party conducted hundreds of tests on Verizon's LTE and Sprint WiMax networks.H.A.L. 9000 said: ↑Eh... Verizon's LTE's average speed in the tests was 5Mbps down/1Mbps up - Sprint's WiMax only averaged 1Mbps down and even slower up.
That's not to say that you can't achieve faster speeds but over a large number of tests across, if memory serves, a range of cities, the average isn't that impressive.

According to the ITU-R, initially, neither HSPA+ or LTE ( or WiMax for that matter) were technically '4G' - only LTE-Advanced and WiMax2 were deemed to be '4G'. Then they changed the requirements and now LTE, WiMax and HSPA+ are all officially '4G'.
To be honest, it doesn't really strike as at all important how many Gs you have, so long as the speed is good. -
This whole G bit is a bunch of phooey as I understand it.
Obviously, my mobile knowledge pales in comparison to others around here, but I take the current state of networks to be a "middle ground" in the next evolutionary cycle of mobile tech, but the marketing people behind it all (yes, I'm one of them, damn us
) decided BLAZING 3.5G SPEED! didn't sound as good as 4G.

GSMArena have a Galaxy S2 vs Optimus 2X review up.
The Optimus edges the Galaxy in most software benchmarks, which might be why Samsung are upping the clock speed.
It absolutely flattens it when it comes to the GPU benchmark, though the review does say it suspects there's a software cap on the framerate on the Samsung.
Despite that, overall they seem to reckon the Galaxy S2 is the better handset - the screen and the camera are better and the review describes browsing on it as being smoother than any other handset they've ever reviewed. -

. My speeds are in the downtown Atlanta area, so I don't know too much about their other locations. Atlanta's network is absolutely nowhere near saturation though.
True, and I agree that it doesn't really matter... but I have the same outlook on the whole ATI/AMD thing. AMD graphics cards will always be ATI to me. So in my mind, that's just default...Step666 said: ↑Depends who you talk to.

Another reason that HSPA+ doesn't register as 4G in my mind is that HSPA+ is just an extension of an already aging standard. LTE is meant as a core network replacement... literally taking the CDMA out of the equation and replacing it with VoLTE. So with that in mind, there's really no point in expanding out with HSPA+ services when the technology that's meant to replace it is already being deployed and is in use right now.
Well, I guess it had to start with Sprint... Ugh. I'm all for LTE, but I'm so sick of the "x"G stuff. I saw that Best Buy commercial with Ozzy and I was like... YES! Somebody gets it!Blake said: ↑This whole G bit is a bunch of phooey as I understand it.

^ LOL +1 that commercial is great
To me i dont really think it matters what type of technology is being used to get faster speeds, as long as it does it. And doing so with good coverage. HSPA+ expands on existing technology which seems to give them better coverage as well, probably becasue coverage already exists for that "technology" -
I'm quite happy with my "slow" EV-DO data.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I'll hand it to 1xEV. While being beaten with HSPA's speeds, 1xEV is nothing if not one of the most reliable and consistent 3G technologies.booboo12 said: ↑I'm quite happy with my "slow" EV-DO data.

The reason HSPA speed tests are usually all over the board, is because of the QAM used. The faster HSPA gets, the higher and more complex the QAM, and inevitably there will be more errors in transmit/receive. Error correction algorithms can only do so much...
We use 16QAM release 5 7.2Mbps.
New HSPA+ sites are using release 7 64QAM 21.1Mbps.
-
I have zero issues with HSDPA in terms of reliability.
Sure, the speeds the networks offer over here are hardly what you'd call blistering at ~2Mbps down but that's 40-50% of the speed I get through my home broadband.
On a separate note, why isn't it Monday already?
I want my new phone! -
What's a BIEBUH?

I love that commercial -
I need help with something.
I will make a long story short by saying this: My camera app stopped working, now I downloaded the official camera.apk for gingerbread, but it doesn't work.
I'm pretty hopeless now, do you guys know how can I get the camera working again without having to reinstall a new ROM?! -
Just to make sure
, did you install the apk with
appinstaller?

The stock android camera app can't be used with Samsung built ROM's. Are you still on Gingerbread? I can make you a .zip with the camera app and firmware you need, and you can just flash it from recovery.Thierry19 said: ↑Well I was not using that application, but the result is the same: Application not installed

You wouldn't lose anything, it'd just be replacing every file related to the camera (apk/libs).
-
Yes, I am still using Gingerbread.. I downloaded the stock camra app from xda dev, but I can't seem to install it.
So that would require me to flash my device? I'm curious if I simply flash the .zip containing the camera.apk and all the related stuff it doesn't work.. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Stock camera apps, and the TouchWiz ones from Samsung aren't installable because they're signed system apps that have to be dropped into /system/app.Thierry19 said: ↑Yes, I am still using Gingerbread.. I downloaded the stock camra app from xda dev, but I can't seem to install it.

The zip I would make only flashes the camera components... nothing personal is lost... You keep everything the same, except the camera app and firmware gets replaced.
Honestly, I'm not sure why it quit working... Sometimes apps can become corrupt. It doesn't happen often, but I have seen it happen.
Just to make sure, are you on TurboGinger? -
Yes I am still on TurboGinger.
The reason why my camera has stopped working is pretty simple. I used SGS tool to apply the camera hack, I was too stupid to figure out that the Gingerbread camera was working differently. When I saw it stopped working I uninstalled it and tried to install a camera.apk..!
