For these 2 days, I've been avidly using Launcher pro and Go Launcher EX. And I must say that Go Launcher EX is better than LP in any way. More customizeable, more interactive in terms of effect choices in the app drawer and the homescreen. It's a really great program, and plan on keeping it. Mastershroom, I recommend you trying it! :)

Stock ROM, custom theme, and a custom compiled kernel with a 1.4GHz frequency step.

I bought one at $250 and I would buy it again for that price. It's a great set-top box, and the keyboard is amazing.

I don't really care for customizability, and I disable all the effects I can due to my phone being a slow piece of crap, so all the eye candy would be lost on me :p

    What does it do though?
    What's it's purpose?

I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, it has no HDD and no tuner so it's no DVR.
Add to the lack of tuner and HHD the fact it's Android and it's not a proper HTPC either.
    So what is it?

edit: also, a little while ago, I asked about how to remove the clock from the statusbar.
I found this thread but the instructions don't work for me - when I try and use APK Manager to decompile the SystemUI file, I just get an error message and if I use 7zip to extract it, the xml file I'm supposed to edit is mostly gobbledegook.

    Any idea anyone?

Someone edited your original with 7-zip. You're supossed to decompile them, change what you want, then recompile them... If it's not done correctly it won't decompile/recompile correctly.

Yep. They're trying to tell the world that graphics standards are best... (AKA: Screw NVIDIA and they're proprietary texture compression libs).

I saw that coming a mile away.

I decided to try out GoLauncher EX and Launcher 7. Launcher 7 is such a great app! It's so nice getting away from the standard android multiple desktop style of launcher. Also it runs much faster than the other launchers (although GoLauncher EX runs very well and is probably my 2nd favourite)

Launcher 7 is basically a copy of how Windows Phone 7 looks.
You have 1 screen where there are tiles (basically widgets) and then you swipe left and get to the application screen (same as application menu).
It doesnt have the dock along the bottom and the tiles are bigger than standard widgets so I find it easier to quickly open my most frequently used apps (messaging, phone, opera, gmail, camera, calendar).

I can't seem to find OMAP 4's specs. Can you please tell me?

Hey HAL, what's the highest amount of MAh a GS2 battery replacement can have without needing a back cover replacement/change? I found a 3500MAh battery, but it's super thick and needs a back cover replacement ( comes bundled ). Does a 2430 MAh battery need a new back cover?

What I meant to say was, the file you're trying to edit isn't "untouched". If it won't decompile there's two reasons:
It has dependencies, and APK Manager has issues with those.
Someone else did a "dirty edit" before you and now it won't decompile or recompile cleanly.

Hmm... Not sure on that one. I don't think I've ever purchased an extended battery. Ever.

That was me, I used UOT Kitchen to change the battery symbols and the background of the notification area.

Well, I just installed an update on my Arc, so I should have a nice clean SystemUI.apk I can fiddle with :)

Windows Phone 7 is definetly polarizing. Either you love it (I like it) or you hate it, but it's original which is refreshing.

Well, despite the errors, I had a look - the line of code the guide says to remove doesn't exist in status_bar.xml, in fact there doesn't seem to be any mention of 'clock' in there at all

Anyway, the apk is attached ( in a zip) and here's the error message:
Thanks for taking a look at it for me :)

 I might have to get a new phone first tbh...my Droid just now has appeared to have locked up while locked...draining the battery rapidly and getting hot.

All it was doing was sitting on the table :|

It now did some sort of warm boot, displaying the splash screen for a few secons before returning to the lock screen...no mediascanner running, all startup apps up..bizzare.

All i did was open the slider..:S

    Just want to ask : is this the best rooting method? And is it safe? Can I update to 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 after I root? [01.08.2011][CF-Root v4.1] KE2/7/8, KF1/2/3/4, KG1/2/3/6 - su+bb+CWM4 - xda-developers
Because this has gotten me worried : Decreased touchscreen sensitivty of certain buttons after rooting! Normal? - xda-developers

    Also, is this a good ROM? [ROM][29.07.2011]Exynos Extreme 3.6 ★ KG3 ★ inc. SpeedMod Kernel & Launcher2 + TW4 - xda-developers

If I want to roll back and delete all changes I've made, including the root, what app can I use besides Ti Backup?

Actually, it's been AGES since I've used anything not pre-rooted or an insecure kernel. What I would recommend you do, if you want to flash a custom ROM on your SGS2 would be this...

Flash a CWM kernel by ODIN... like this one: [Kernel][GPL] Ninphetamine-2.0.5 - Now with 100% less Samsungyness - xda-developers
Boot into CWM Recovery and flash away. :) The ROM you chose is a nice one. :) Plus, all custom ROM's come pre-rooted. If you want to stay stock and root through an app, I'm actually not sure about that...

Ah, thanks for ze help! :D

To root the phone I simply need to DL ODIN, plug the phone and root? [01.08.2011][CF-Root v4.1] KE2/7/8, KF1/2/3/4, KG1/2/3/6 - su+bb+CWM4 - xda-developers Is there a chance of getting it bricked or anything? Because from what I've been told is that if I don't know what I'm doing ( which I don't ), best chances are that I'll end up DED

    [03/08-11] [ROM] [XXKG6] TOUCH X 3.2 'PERFORMANCE' - "Battery friendly" - xda-developers I really like this, but I need a root...

Also, DEagleson told me if I root, I lose the warranty. Is that true? I would really love to have 2.3.4 ( or 5  ), overscroll glow, a good battery life ( that mod ), the browser lagfix...

That's why you read the instructions over and over until you do know what you are doing. If you don't know what a particular term means go find out, don't assume. Lastly, whatever happens don't panic. :D (I say that to everybody messing around with Android. :p)

I've been reading those simple instructions for like 3+ hours, I understand them, but I still feel that something might go wrong and my GS2 will go kaput

As it's said "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I don't experience lag, even in flash intensive websites. I get great scores in benchmarks, and games run flawlessly. The only reason I would root is pretty much to have eye candy ( like the overscroll glow ), because I can wait for the official 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 official release ;)

Indeed. Read the instructions and you should be golden.

LOL. And root is 99.999999999999999999999999999999999998% reversible. If you get into a tizzy, put your GS2 in download mode and flash it back to stock in one fell swoop.

    +10 internets.

Also, I wanted to say that rooting in NO way messes with touch panel sensitivity. That's hard coded into the kernel, and short of running over your GS2 with a car or cracking the hades out of the screen, you shouldn't have any touch issues.

With that flash program I don't remember its name?

    But does it void the warranty? I think I'll install, after rooting ( with this method [01.08.2011][CF-Root v4.1] KE2/7/8, KF1/2/3/4, KG1/2/3/6 - su+bb+CWM4 - xda-developers ), these :

    [ROM][29.07.2011]Exynos Extreme 3.6 ★ KG3 ★ inc. SpeedMod Kernel & Launcher2 + TW4 - xda-developers

And then a couple of themes here and there :p

Also, what is CWM for? Is it like Ti BU?
    Alright! :D

The program you need to flash from Download Mode is this: Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: Odin3 v1.83.exe

CWM is a recovery replacement. It takes the stock 3e recovery and replaces it with a much more verbose alternative... providing nandroid/unsigned flash/restore/and reset options (delete user data, dalvik vm, cache...).

    EDIT: HA! NINJA!

    ^

CWM recovery is a custom recovery. Basically you boot your phone into recovery mode (not into the OS) and you can access more advanced functions such as Nandroid backup. What is that? Well essentially, you are creating a backup image of your phone. Just like Windows does with your computer. You can restore every single thing even if you badly screw up a custom rom install. Other things you are do includes formatting various section of the phone and other fun stuff. :p

There ain't nothing better than an Arc

Though I guess I forgive you because of this.

@HAL: I don't wish to come across as pushy or impatient but I was wondering if you'd had a chance to look at my SystemUI apk?

Then again I do have largely the same hardware as the Arc sooooooo. Tried out the GS2 today, it's..........so light. I also tried to play with the HTC Sensation, but then the alarm went off, silly over sensitive security systems.

I did this morning, but I'm getting the same thing even with a force decompile... do you know where I could find a stock/untouched/fresh version?
