2.3.4 has some kernel fixes that let it run a bit cooler.
-
Yeah and if you also get a custom kernel that allows undervoly you can make it run even cooler.
@ Phistachio: Yes thats the one i told you about. -
Wow, that's great! When I browse flash content, it heats up to 46ºC+!
*OFFICIAL*-KG5 and KG7 2.3.4 Released - Thoughts and Reviews (Download links too!) - xda-developers
The Polish or Brazillian version? As this is the official version, flashing with ODIN is pretty much the same as updating with Kies, amirite? -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Kies ought to be stricken from the internets. It's horrible and half the time it doesn't work correctly.
ODIN is a very direct method of updating, though it won't leave any of your settings or personal info intact. When you flash through ODIN, it wipes and re-partitions your NAND, then installs a CSC, Kernel, Bootloader, and system image. It's a clean install, but it's 100% reliable if you know how to get your phone into Download Mode.
So no, Kies and ODIN have almost nothing in common really. -
Besides, Kies is such an iTunes ripoff
But the thread says it's non-wipe?
Oh, so pretty much no chance of bricking/making the phone go kaput?
Reviewing the steps :
1- Download mode by pressing Vol down, home, power
2- Accept that it might kaput your phone if you screw with it and press vol up
3- Connect to PC with USB to ODIN
4- Tick PDA and select the tar file
5- Start
6- Profit? -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Once your phone is in download mode, just connect it to a PC that's already got ODIN running and ready and don't touch your phone. It will reboot when it's done.
But yes, you've got the procedure correct. About the chance of bricking... I've flashed numerous Captivates and my GS2 with ODIN way more times than I can count and I've never had a single issue. About it not wiping... IDK? I usually check the box to re-partition, but you have to have a .pit file for that as well. -
Thanks! Does this void the warranty BTW?
I'll backup my stuff first. -
If you get the yellow ! mark at boot the warranty is void.
But there is a way to remove it.
Not that i need to, i always add Cyanogen if i can.
My old Galaxy S has it as does my Galaxy S 2. -
Darn...
Guess I'll wait for the official update from Samsung's part, since I've always had bad luck with electronics ( PC RMA'd 5 times ._. ), so I will better keep my warranty....
Damn it
-
Never realised you can have a bunch of different sliders in widget locker, still experimenting...(just started using CM7 again the other day)
-
Hmm, what time/date thing is that...it looks like one that's on Acer phones:
-
I think it's this.
-
It's actually this. I can add weather and battery level onto it too, haven't gotten around to it yet.
-
May I PLEASE know where you got that wallpaper from?
Your avatar is quite interesting...
I configured WL to my likings, and I think it got pretty cool!
-
Don't remember, but I uploaded it for you.
After some changes it looks like this...
I really should change the icons but I am too lazy right now. -
Thank you! Love it. I was striving for such wallpaper since I got my GS2, it's so comfy and has happy energy!
Nice lock screen! Mine's a pretty big mix between all UI's

You guys remember that whole deal about Google actually working with the carriers to get more concrete software release schedules in line? Well, they're actually doing it...
Kudos to Google, once again.
-
Where the hell is Gingerbread for the Galaxy S 1 then?!
I dont care much since i have a fully working GB ROM, but still
-
Well, the announcement never said that it would apply retroactively...
Maybe future versions of Android will have more separation between the UI and the underlying OS ( as Gingerbread had been rumoured to have had) - that could help manufacturers get their updates out ASAP. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Indeed, the phones that we have out now (minus the Infuse) are all at OEM/AT&T's discretion, update wise. The Infuse and any newer handset will have a planned release schedule. Software release schedules can be moved around a bit but releases can't be pushed back for more than 6 weeks. Google will step in if need be to ensure schedules are kept.
The only thing I'm not sure about is what happens if Google has to step in. Do the OEM's get charged? Does the carrier get charged? People don't work for free... -
What is the best graphical game to Samsung GS2?
Thanks in advance -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Not sure... But Backstab HD looked pretty nice.
-
To Artix or not to Atrix...thats the question.
-
I think it's better to Atrix
-
@HAL: quick question - when you fiddle around with that apk for me, do you have adb set up?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
CM7 now has a working repo for the Atrix... I say go for it.
If it were still stuck on Motofail I would have suggested you just move along..lol.
Of course. What are you up to? -
Someone's trying to tell me that the reason I keep getting error messages is that I don't have adb set up.
Sounds like poppycock to me. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Yep. I would call shenanigans on that one.
Decompiling an APK has 0% to do with adb, except that you'd use adb to pull it from the phone initially, if you didn't pull it from a filesystem img or zip. -
I've just been manually extracting them using Root Explorer, it's not elegant but it works.
That isn't the cause of the problem, is it? -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Nope, shouldn't. Try adb pull system/app/SystemUI.apk and run it though APKTool. You may want to pull the whole /framework folder as well, just for good measure.
It shouldn't make a difference in the slightest, but then again, I've had some run-ins with Root Explorer in the past... -
Just received my 2430MAh battery. Pretty awesome, but does it require a battery calibration? I've seen that BC is only required when installing a new ROM, not when changing the battery...
-
Well this is the issue, I don't have adb set up on my system and I'd really rather not go through the hassle of setting it up when I'll never use it again - especially not, if as I suspect, it'll make no difference whatsoever.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
^Frankly it surprises me that you've been doing what you're doing with Android and haven't installed/used it yet...
adb is immensely useful. -
I've never been good with code and adb, whilst not the same as trying to write your own apps, is a step in that direction - ie into an area I'm not very good with.
I'm working the next two days and away for the weekend, so I'll maybe give it a go next week... after I get the car insurance sorted... -
Hey Step666, did you see this?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
There's something that you guys may or may-not like about this, and it has nothing to do with the keyboard.
I just can't talk about it yet...
-
No, I hadn't.
I'm surprised they chose it, given they'd already used screenshots submitted more recently than mine. -
No one will tell.
i don't see a keyboard on that thing, I hope there isn't one... -
Hmmm, 3h of intense usage with lots of browsing and wi fi, and then 2h idle with WL, only lost 12% of the battery. Nice!
-
I have a Motorola Milestone or a Motorola Droid as it's known in the US. I've had this phone for about a year now but still don't know it's full capabilities.
1. I've read a lot about rooting phones? What exactly does this do? Should I do it?
2. My phone is slower than turtle now and don't know why, how can I speed it up?
3. What are some must have apps for Android as a whole? -
Some interesting leaks here - especially the two handsets with HD screens.
I wonder if the i9250 is the next Nexus device... -
That's interesting.
What's your guess on the i9250's SoC? Improved Exynos? -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
OMAP 4440. I'm 75% sure. -
Mmm, sexy!
Is it dual or quad at what GHz?
EDIT : Nevermind, it's DC @ 1.5GHz -
4440?
Not a 4430 or 4460? -
Suck. This things are planned for at least a year from now I hope...
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Yep. I'm almost positive.
The OMAP 4440 is an updated/die shrunk 4430. That's why it's clocked at 1.5GHz. It's also got a bigger CPU/GPU bus and a healthy overclock on the SGX540 graphics.
All in all, if the Nexus Prime is going to indeed have a 720p screen, the OMAP4440 would be the chipset to run it like a champ, and Google would have it no other way. -
Awesome! That should give buyer's confidence I'm sure.
I say try it...I've always liked the physical design of the Atrix.
I remember hearing rumblings about the Atrix bootloader being unencrypted in a update...if so, that's definetly a compelling reason.
I'm going to guess even though you wont tell us. It's got something to do with the choice of processor inside the phone. Just a guess.
Nice to see a fellow Droid 1 owner. I'll try to answer your questions:
1. Rooting isn't something to be taken lightly, but if you do root, you'll be able to use applications that require root privledges to run, like some screenshot applications. You also must root your phone to install custom ROM's.
Some good resources regarding the in's and potential outs of rooting:
Get 'Root' on your Android device | Android Central
Editorial: Sometimes, root isn?t the answer | Android Central
2. You can speed things up a bit by doing things like disabling animations, (Settings -> display -> animations) removing widgets and shortcuts from your homescreens. I've also found that my phone feels somewhat faster when apps are moved to the SD card....I'm pretty sure this is just placebo since I'm seeing storage memory increase (in theory, storage memory has nothing to do with the amount of RAM that is free) so the jury's out on this one.
I know the Milestone is locked down with an encrypted bootloader. As such you won't be able to install a custom kernel that could speed up performance by overclocking the processor. I use a 1.2 ghz kernel now and it's helped a bit, although the phone still feels sluggish sometimes.
You CAN install "semi-custom" ROM's though. The build of Android on your phone is referred to as a ROM. Custom/semi custom ROM's, are made by enthusiasts who want to make things different and/or better. In many cases, people see performance improvements. It's just a bit more involved to install a custom ROM on a Milestone than a Droid 1, again due to the encrypted bootloader.
Here's a list of the one's available for Milestone: Android Candy: Motorola Milestone Custom ROM List
The biggest issue really is the Milestone/Droid 1's lack of RAM these days. While 256 MB was deemed downright generous in 09....apps and Android itself has gotten larger.
3. I like Pandora, Angry Birds, Trillian, SeekDroid and ShopSavvy. Spotify's also a great app if you subscribe to it, and Yaaic is great if you do IRC chats.
Haha isn't it fun?! Tech always seems to be getting better shortly after I buy something...predictable. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Indeed. It needs to be better known, IMO.
The Atrix is wide open, from a dev perspective. It all depends on what you can do with source code.
