I finally had my MyTouch4G upgraded to Android 2.3 last week! Working very well thus far, fewer crashes and it seems to be a bit speedier, haven't really noticed anything on the battery life front yet though...

Great! Battery life changes are there, but you won't notice since it's not quite "benchmarked" so to speak. Optimizations are always present.

Is Sprint going to get the SGS2 first? When will the others get it... the race is on!
Sprint to be first in U.S. with Samsung Galaxy S II, called the Samsung Epic Touch 4G -
what do you all think about Sony Ericson Ray ?
it's about to come out. And I'm looking for a phone that has decent battery and be small on size -
I read from someone who had "inside" info that at&t was getting it on sep 2nd.
Also, I believe the sprint variant was supposed to be the Function.
EDIT: THis may be interesting to all you people anxiously awaiting th GS2 in the US: http://www.mobilebloom.com/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-release-date-and-price-verified/223121/
no source, but someone mention on the android forums that they called their at&t store and the store offered to hold one for him when they got it in next sunday. -

AT&T doesn't reserve handsets. First come, first serve basis only. They will actually fire you if you decide to set one aside.
Meanwhile, guess what? My single core Infuse can play full HD 1080p video over HDMI to my TV, while my dual-core NVIDIA toting Atrix cannot. My GS2 can also, but that's a given. The GS2 will actually work with the Infuse's HDMI dongle... Hummingbird carried the MHL spec, but the functionality was never built into the kernel until the Infuse. -
Bah, I hate rumors, but I can't stop looking for them... that's cool on the 1080p video stuff, but I can't really see a time when I would use it.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
LOL... Rumors keep the internet from disappearing. About the FHD playback, I don't either. I just thought it was funny that Tegra 2 couldn't pull it off, while a single core Hummingbird could.
EDIT: Rumors also kept Fleetwood Mac going, so I guess they're not _too_ bad.
-
Connecting it to a TV sounds cool for when one's at home or whatever. My omnia had TV out but I never tried it. :/
-
IIRC Verizon's was the Function. -
You are correct sir. I meant within.

Any recommendations for the best app for remotely tracking/locking your phone etc?

Hmm. I noticed this before but didn't really look into it, but Samsung is intentionally holding back the Galaxy S series WiFi connection speeds. It's capable of 65Mbps N-wireless, and that's the speed it usually negotiates at, for me... but they're artificially limiting it to match the speed capabilities of the modem baseband. The thing about the modem baseband on the Galaxy S is that the Infineon chipset is actually able to sustain 14.4Mbps HSPA, but the modem baseband limits it to 7.2Mbps on HSPA. On WiFi it's limited to about 10Mbps in sustained throughput... which is much less than actual negotiation speed.
I've been using the Atrix a bit lately and I was noticing how much faster the WiFi is on it. I'm able to get roughly 20Mbps in sustained bandwidth from the Atrix's WiFi. HSPA is capped at 14.4Mbps. -
Something I just wanted to check, when a branded Android handset receives an update, the manufacturer takes the code from Google, customises it for the model in question, passes that on to the network who fiddle with it and then does it go back to the manufacturer for testing before being released?
Basically, do the manufacturers ok the network's work? -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Google distributes the source to the OEM's, the OEM's customize it based on carrier/contract requests, Google approves/disapproves it, carriers approve/disapprove it, then it ends up on a device through FOTA update.
Basically yes. The OEM is the one who puts the entire package together. It's up to the carrier to sign off on it. -
So the networks can't make any changes without the manufacturer's permission, even if it's merely given tacitly?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
That's true of US carriers. I believe, in the UK, the carrier approval is removed or distanced from the equation... the OEM has more authority over what's on devices. So the carrier wouldn't be able to do just any FOTA update... -
Something's wrong with my battery.
Lost 7% in 30 mins. OEM battery. Same is happening with my other high capacity battery.
HAL, what should I do?
EDIT : 85% after 60 mins. Before was still at 90-92
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
@Phistachio... a battery calibration. On Android you can't just swap batteries all the time. Android has a file that contains battery statistics that are messed up really easily by changing the battery and disrupting it's normal charge/discharge cycle.
There shouldn't be anything wrong with your battery. It's just Android can't accurately judge how much battery percentage you have. -
I see, thanks!
So this is pretty much the procedure :
- Root with [17.08.2011][CF-Root v4.1] KE2/7/8, KF1/2/3/4, KG1/2/3/5/6/7, KH1/3 - su+bb+CWM4 - xda-developers
- Download Battery Calibration - Android Market
And I'm done? -
That's pretty interesting, especially compared to how Microsoft does it.
Haha, maybe I should do that since my battery falls out all the time, stupid Droid 1 battery cover.
-
Google's Motorola buy drives Android partner toward Microsoft
The sooner the better.
We're unlucky enough to have to try and sell some of their terrible phones at work, not to mention deal with their ignorant and quite rude reps. -
Out of nowhere I started getting horrible battery drain... Calibrated already and "soft-reflashed" my ROM.
Gonna drain > calibrate once more before i try completly reflashing or switch to another ROM.
At 56% after only 7 hours. Lots of "Awake" time when im not even using the phone... -
After 7h, I have less than 40-30%...
I just erased cache partition and reset the phone. Perhaps it also erased the mighty batterystats.bin and replaced with a fresh one.
I don't want to root, since it voids the warranty... My darn luck is very bad with electronics, so I would rather have low battery than, when broken, to need a 600 repair
Besides that, HAL, do you know any way to wipe the battery stats and re calibrate the batt without root? -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
The only other way to re-calibrate the batterystats is to reflash the ROM with ODIN.
You can try completely discharging, all the way to 0%, then without disruption back to 100% a couple of times and see what that does. It's not guaranteed, but it might work. -
Mmmm, I see. Where should I get the .tar from? Wouldn't that count as a new ROM and void the warranty?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Flashing through ODIN isn't voiding the warranty, especially if you're flashing stock firmware.
Here is XXKH3, which is 2.3.4: Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: I9100XXKH3.rar
And ODIN 1.83: Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: Odin3 v1.83.exe -
Oh, so you just gave me stock Samsung firmware? UPDATED Samsung firmware? Thanks!
Should I do PDA mode? -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I'm not sure about that rar, but all the items should be labeled as to what slot they go into in ODIN. CSC, PDA...
If you need some more help I'll download them... I'm running an older firmware. I haven't updated in a while.
EDIT: Make note, though, that ODIN will completely wipe your /data, /system. So all your downloaded apps/app settings will be deleted. Your internal SD and external SD won't be touched unless you also press "Master Clear". Master Clear resets the entire phone, and all the attached memory.
So back up your stuff if you plan on using ODIN! After flashing, it's like turning your phone on for the first time again. -
Thanks! Already backed up.
When is the official release of 2.3.4? Because if I screw something up, I'll need to return to my crappy S7550
In the worst case scenario, is there a chance that it may damage somehow the hardware?
Is it possible to say that updating that ROM with ODIN = Updating official release with Kies?
EDIT : I think I'll wait, it seems to be better... -
Wow, apparently, I fixed it! I charged to 100%, rebooted a few times, now, 1h, and only 3% lost with WiFi N turned on!
Maybe batterystats.bin was also refreshed during the factory reset and cache deletion?
EDIT : Still at 97%! This is great. Thanks a lot HAL!

A friend of mine mentioned there's several "Flashing Counters" in Galaxy S II phones. I just wondered what people's thoughts were about that, and I can grab the post on Google+ if anyone needs them.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
The good thing about that though is that the flash counters can be reset.
-
Why are almost all apps on Samsung Apps optimized for Galaxy S but not for Galaxy S 2? I want NFS Shift...
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
LOL. Any game that doesn't have "THD" behind it, for "Tegra HD", can be loaded and played on either Galaxy S.
The Tegra 2 SoC's have a different GPU architecture, so games have to be optimized specifically for NVIDIA's texture compression libs and such. I hate it. Google hates it. That's why the next Nexus won't be an NVIDIA based device, because NVIDIA doesn't adhere to open standards. Meanwhile with the Chainfire 3D app, Hummingbird and Exynos can play some THD games better than an actual Tegra 2 device can.
-
Yeah, but I mean games like "Need for Speed Shift HD (Galaxy S1) and Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus HD _Galaxy S in Samsung Apps. The SGS1 is inferior to the SGS2, why can't the SGS2 also play those games?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Hmm. Mine can play those just fine. IDK? I got mine from the Market though... -
Just searched, can't find the game, only guides.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Interesting. It would have to be due to you not being in the US... that's the only thing I can think of.
EDIT: I'll just leave this here...
-
Nevermind, I think it's 4G.
Also, how quick do you lose battery with WiFi N ON? Started this post with 33%, now it's at 31%... -
after a quick search I get angry birds and a special level for 4g att phones.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
LOL. We have a winner.
-
You do know you can stop promoting AT&T now?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
See the WP7 thread... LOL.
I'm just not sure I'll be working for VZW or Sprint. I DON'T like CDMA or 1xEV. I don't like the way devices are provisioned on either VZW or Sprint. The sad thing is that aside from AT&T, there are no other major GSM carriers in the US since T-Mobile is going to be absorbed. -
Surely that's exactly why the merger shouldn't be allowed to go ahead?
As for Verizon, sure CDMA sucks but LTE is pretty nice... -
But, can't you re-apply?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
One would think, but it's not seen as GSM vs CDMA, it's seen as: there's still more than one choice in wireless carriers.
And yes, LTE _is_ nice, but working with VZW's LTE means also working with CDMA with handoffs and such... just not my cup of tea. Sprint would be even worse, seeing as they themselves don't even have an LTE deployment schedule. They're putting everything on the purchase of Clear, and that will be an integration nightmare.
Never ever. Unless they offer me an incentive to come back, I'm not even going to re-apply for any position. I don't like what they did to me... and I don't care for their crap.
I've been in contact with Bell Ca. and they say they'll hire me, but that would mean moving all the way to (gasp!) Canada! But, Bell has one thing... Superphone savings: get a $75 credit in Bell stores- Bell
Look at that lineup! -
Bell?
Did you say...
BELL!?!?!?!
I better unfollow you on Twitter and delete you from Google+.
D:
Kidding...or am I!?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
I understand...
That must be the most impressive prices I've seen! Well, Canada isn't too bad, and if Bell pays you right and you enjoy it, then why not?
One downside is that, probably, you'll need to learn french. ( correct if I'm wrong, Thierry ).
