What GPU does my Infuse have, and how does it compare with the others?
Also, any notables regarding the pending USA release of the Samsung Galaxy S2?
Sorry for the barrage of questions, lol.

Your GPU is a bad boy SGX540
Verizon has canceled GSII release. Now the rest, I think they'll receive. I believe the Samsung conf that was meant to happen to announce the GSII was postponed due to Irene.
HAL, I'm confused here : if the GS1 has a better GPU ( SGX540 ), why does it score lower? -
Brendanmurphy Your Worst Nightmare
SGX540 is a beast of a gpu. It outperforms tegra 2. Now where the GS loses is in cpu. For expample
SmartBench 2011 Scores
Galaxy S1 = Cpu 700 Gpu = 2400 - 2600
Desire z = Cpu 1500 Gpu = 1800
Atrix = Cpu 2700 Gpu = 2000 - 2200
Galaxy s2 = Cpu 3000 Gpu = 2000
The Galaxy S had such a huge advantage in the gpu department yet its cpu was so slow it bottle necked the gpu. -
I see! Thanks for the info!
The difference between the GSI and GSII in terms of GPU, if going with comparison of Smartbench, isn't that big. I got ~2300 points. The max score I've seen on the GS1 was from an OC'd GS1 holding 2891 points.
Pretty much a ~20% difference.

I bet they had issues with getting the LTE working in the SGS2 to their satisfaction. With the Prime, they have a bit more time and hopefully they'll show off their new software talents (ie. CM) in their new UI. I hope their new DROID Prime will have a more HTC feel to it over the SGS2.
-
I suspect that this will be kinda like the OG Droid and Xoom: Codeveloped with Google and vanilla android but not really a Nexus device as updates would be handled via Verizon.
It'll be interesting to see what they have to say... -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Exactly. The Hummingbird CPU is _OK_ for a Cortex A8 core... it's got Intrinsity's branch prediction logic "magic" baked in, but it has a VERY hard time with Floating Point instructions. The Hummingbird has a single 64-bit SIMD extension, whereas the OMAP's have a single 128-bit extension, and the Snapdragon has dual 128-bit extensions. Snapdragon has always excelled at floating point OP's and it's VERY evident in their linpack scores... they're always much higher than the competition (A8 anyways). The dual core A9 references from ARM have dual 128-bit pipelines as a standard feature, whereas on the A8 they were only optional (like NEON). -
Flashing CWM fixed the problem and I was able to switch rom's and kernel's.
So far, the switch has paid off...I haven't had any odd issues yet.
-
This is really cool and I can confirm it works.
It's just a shame it's not compatible with QRDroid - I prefer it to Barcode Scanner because of it's ability to create QR codes as well as scan them. -
Not one word about the US Galaxy S2 models now they've actually been released...?
-
^ Awwwwwww Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Ill be getting the behemoth Sprint 4.5" Galaxy S II on Sept 16th!
Though i think i wish it was just 4.3.... 4.5 is huge
guess ill like it soon enough though
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
You vill take ze 4.5" screen and you vill love it, ya?!
/german accent.
Seriously though, I wouldn't trade anything for my Infuse which has the same panel. It's possibly the best mobile display I've ever seen. It's like having a mini plasma TV in your pocket. -
Haha
yeah it is nice, I saw a dummy in the store and its nice and so thin... but man is it huge
But i didnt see the actual screen on
I generally love big screens though
i have a 17" laptop i bring around everywhere like its 13", so i think ill like it soon enough
-
I'm thinking bout the Epic touch my self.. but thang it's huge, mite hang on to m Nexus to ICS comes out
Another thing.. I hate those plastic battery doors, I hope something aftermarket bring us some kind of metal battery door or a hybrid type case -
I still want a Galaxy S II...Nexus/Droid Prime be dammed.
Mainly for TW 4...If the screenshots purporting to be ICS are real (who knows at this point) the stock experience will be as bland looking and featureless as ever -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I wouldn't count on that entirely, since what you've seen is a very early build.
Nevertheless, CM8 will go nicely with the GS2...
-
Hopefully the Sprint GSII wont lack development vs. the other GSII's because of the different screen size. Might make ports harder
And hopefully Samsung and the carriers will get it together with updating the phone to Ice Cream Sandwich officially. -
Would the screen size be an issue if it's the same resolution?
-
It shouldn't. The amount of pixels displayed is the same, thus the screen size doesn't matter when it's the same resolution.
-
Ah ok, yeah i didnt think of that!
I'll definetly be changing the dpi on the screen and setting it higher.
-
Should I wait for the GS2 (AT&T) or wait for another phone? :0 I heard something better is coming.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Sweet baby Jesus, Samsung is on a role... the Galaxy Note. 5.2" 1280x800 S-AMOLED+ display (NON-pentile) with Exynos running the show.
If ever there were a moment where Apple should be worried, it would be now. Seems there's a Galaxy device for just about everyone out there. 10.1" all the way down to 4", with NAND capacities from 16GB-64GB. -
Steve Jobs resigned in time
But that Galaxy Note is more of a mini tablet, rather than a smartphone, right?
Also, why don't you like PenTile? It means more subpixels per pixel = more quality?
-
Well, the Nexus Prime is supposed to launch in October, so if you can wait 1 more month, I would if I were you.

Nice little app if you have an Epson WiFi printer , allows you to print straight from your phone, it works great on my SX525WD

H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Well, it all depends on how you intend to use it. The new GTab 7.7 has phone capabilities with a built in earpiece so you can hold it up to your head and have a conversation...
And nope. Pentile = much fewer subpixels, therefore much worse image quality. -
but by october, the next phone will be a month away and then the next one and then the next one :c
-
Well, this is the XXI century, what do tou expect?
Oh, I thought it was otherwise... The GSII is non pentile, right? -
A better question would be, have HAL had any major complains about the screen on the GS2 yet? (After several months of owner ship) I think you have your answer right there.
-
Then again, before non-pentile sAMOLED panels were invented, did he really have any complaints about the Galaxy S's screen?
So the Galaxy Note can be definitely used as a phone? -
Good question, but then again we are not talking about the GS.
5" is an awkward size IMO, too small to be used as a tablet, a tad to big as a phone, as if the 4.3" or 4.5" isn't already awkward enough.......(not that I don't like it)
-
It's no more or less relevant than the question about the Galaxy S2 IMO - given the huge difference in pixel density, I'm not sure that it would be such an issue if it were pentile.
The Note is 2cm longer and 2cm wider than my Arc, I could carry it around day-to-day I think.
I'm just trying to weigh up all the options - I'd much rather get a Nexus with the same screen powered by an OMAP chip but the Note is certainly a contender. -
True, I'd agree with that point.
I was playing around with Arc the other day (after setting off an alarm on the demo unit and have everyone staring at me
) and it was really nice to use overall. Maybe it was the thin bezel. I am looking forward to see what the next Nexus will really be like, and whether or not it will be released on all Canadian carriers like the Nexus S.
-
He doesn't complain because, after I did some research, the GSII is non-pentile
Yes it can with some earbuds.
I agree. 4.3 is already considerably big, now 5" is TOO big
-
Oddly, I'd say it has one of the most ridiculous bezels around - a ton of dead space above the screen and the buttons crammed in so close at the bottom that you catch screen a lot when you go to press them.
So no then.
It's not down to the size of the screen, it's down to the size of the phone - if manufacturers would try getting bezels down a bit, then larger screens would be quite manageable.
I worked out a long time ago that a 4.5" 720HD screen would fit into the iPhone4 - it's have to have a pretty minimal bezel down the sides but it'd be doable.
So think what size of screen you could cram into a Galaxy S2 or an Arc if there wasn't so much dead space reserved for logos/names.
Honeycomb discards physical buttons in favour of on-screen controls, if that's all getting folded into ICS, then that could help address one of the issues preventing manufacturers from fitting the largest possible screen into the smallest possible space - the need to accommodate physical buttons.
I have an idea that I think would help with replacing physical buttons with soft keys, though I don't know if it would work. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
I don't complain at all.
It's a gorgeous screen, just like the Infuse. The Infuse has less pixel density, but overall, even though it's larger than the GS1, it's still sharper. RGB stripe really does wonders for S-AMOLED. The difference I hate in Pentile displays is that there's no consistency in implementations. Motorola uses RGBW displays where Samsung uses RGBG displays. There's a HUGE difference between them, but they're still Pentile.
tl;dr = The GS2 and Infuse screen panels make my Captivate quietly weep in the corner.
-
True. To everyone I show videos I captured on my phone, they all say "Wow, that's amazing recordinf and screen quality!" And me : "
"
@Iain Yes, that's true. If the bezels were smaller, everhthing would be easier to cram into. -
The galaxy note does NOT need headphones. It is a fully functioning phone. I want it. Lol
-
In that case ditto.
But I'd rather hold out for something with a better GPU. -
Well, the Prime is a nice little fella...
OR, you can get the PS Vita 3G
-
Are any of you using Spotify on your phone? How much bandwidth does it consume. I'm contemplating ditching my oldschool Nokia and finally getting a smartphone. Just wondering how much data I'll need. I've read that Pandora is ~16mb/hr, but I do like Spotify better.
-
I really hope the galaxy note launches in the US within a reasonable timeframe. Really looks like the perfect phone for me.
-
I concur. I'd definitely be able to give up my keyboard love for sure with it.
-
Samsung says no to Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Note in the US - SlashGear
I hope this isn't true -
Woah, that's a big PITA for US consumers... But it all leads to be true, because of the sales AND the carrier restrictions... -

I'm having trouble receing MMS message on my MyTouch4G, when I get a message and hit download, it says "downloading" but then after a bit it just goes back to showing the download button without actually having downloaded anything.
I used Handscent SMS as my messaging app but I tried using the default Messenger and it still did not work. Anyone have a clue as to what this may be? Does DATA need to be on to download MMS? -
Brendanmurphy Your Worst Nightmare
Yea Data needs to be on to receive MMS, also check your apn settings -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Yep. And it won't work over WiFi. It must be WWAN data. -
Sept. 16th cant come fast enough
