It makes people think the situation is worse than it actually is. Of course, your phone not working at all and something that is fixable with a bit of patience is only subtly different.

Then again, it was alot easier to brick an android handset back with first couple of models. I guess not too many were around then to see those people who had genuinely bricked their phones in xda. :p Nowadays it's near impossible, given the amount of automated tools developers make.

That said, I am no more of a fan of xda than you are. But that's largely due to the drama that surrounds "developers".

Either way someone who isn't 100% sure of what they're doing is going to panic - even people who have a pretty firm idea of what they're up to still panic for a wee while when they screw up their phones.
If I flash one of my handsets and suddenly it won't boot, it doesn't matter if you call it bricked, comatose, moody or 'in super-special-fluffy mode'.

Generally I do like XDA, it's a great resource but my biggest qualm revolves round the whole 'developers' issue too.

I just updated CM7 to the beta version for my Triumph...seems to have fixed a few things. The proximity sensor actually works now; on the last build it would just repeatedly flicker the screen on and off during a call. MMS still doesn't work though, even though the developer says it's been working since alpha. >:/

Are your APN settings correct? I don't exactly know Sprint's MMS gateway specifics, but that could be your issue.

This is getting frustrating. My browser keeps going in a loop and I can't even type in a new URL. If I leave it shows it's consuming 50-80% CPU. Plus I don't see a way to change the default browser on the main screen. i'm using the dolphin hd browser now, but would prefer to make that default. Any ideas?

    Loop? Crash loop?

Dolphin uses the stock browser as a core, so if the stock is doing it, Dolphin will too.

    Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>All>Browser... force stop and clear data/clear cache. :)

You shouldn't have any issues after that. Do you have flash enabled?

Also, where are you seeing usage percentages?

Not sure that really warrants a boo - it's a step in the right direction from Motorola and now mimics the likes of SE and HTC.

Sorry, should have been more specific. Good for Motorola (though my Droid 1 is not locked, almost back to where you were before), boo Verizon for removing this feature.

Well, I think he's boo-ing Verizon Wireless... which is keeping true to form in keeping every single Droid (except the Charge/Eris) locked down tighter than Ft. Knox.

Verizon is the bad guy here just as much as Motorola has been. Moto is slowly (read: glacially) changing their views. Verizon? Not changing a bit. If it was up to them, they'd have all BREWMP phones like they did before the smartphone boom.

Excellent point on the latter. Verizon's always been super controlling, I remember people getting up in arms when they standardized the phone UI's across brands and handsets. People would freak out over lost features and performance slowdowns, and some managed to get rid of it.

EDIT : The wallpaper is from this app : https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.SyndicateApps.ICSv2&hl=en It's the ICS launcher, but it comes with an app called "ICS Wallpapers", and there's where the wallpaper is. No need to use the ICS launcher though :)

Dolphin seems to be working fine. I view usage percentages from an app called "Task Manager" that came with the phone. The browser loop completely brings my machine to a crawl. I was able to exit out of it using the Task Manager. But couldn't clear cache or anything. I just shut down and started back up then first thing I did was clear cache and data as suggested. So far so good. Thanks.

I'd still like to know if it's possible to change the home screen bottom fixed icons (Music / Videos / Internet / Applications) can be changed, or at least point to a different app, especially internet.

    Settings->Wireless & Networks->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names

There, tap on an APN to configure it. Here are the APN settings for VM:

    Name: Virgin Mobile
    APN: Sprint
    Proxy:
    Port:
    User Name: Sprint
    Password: *
    Server: *
    MMSC: http://mmsc.vmobl.com:8080/mms?
    MMS Proxy: 205.239.233.136
    MMS Port: 81
    MCC: 310
    MNC: 00
    APN Type:

If it's already setup like that, then something else is the matter. Try adding "MMS" to the APN Type field. If that still doesn't work you can try setting your user agent in the CM7 Messaging app by going in to Messaging and pressing Menu->Settings->Custom User Agent. :)

Well battery life seems a bit better now after a few discharges and recharges. Not sure if it was just a calibration issue or what. Nowhere near 8 hours video replay time they claim, but should be able to watch a couple full length movies and still have battery life to spare. Although wi-fi does seem to have a significant drain on the battery even though the battery meter doesn't show it.

Why are people such idiots? I posted a review at Amazon of my device. Initially I complained of battery life. Someone replied "just get a replacement battery". I stated that it's sealed inside, and he continues to say that it is replaceable. He has the Galaxy 4 player with a replaceable battery, but refuses to believe the 5 doesn't, despite my providing a half dozen links with evidence to the contrary. Sigh. I give up.

    Hey guys!
Having an issue, hoping the collective intelligence could help me out. I’ve been running CM7 on my Evo for several weeks now, without any sort of issue. Lately, I’ve had a few hiccups though, that have culminated into endless hangs on the bootloader today. I can’t get it to boot into the interface for the life of me!

First off, the most important thing. What steps do I take to get my phone to boot? Like I said, I’ve been running CM7 (the latest stable version for 2.3. I believe it’s technically beta by unrevoked).
Next, I’m getting a weird vibration every time I move my phone while in the middle of a phone call. It’s pretty irritating to the recipient of the call. Any way to turn this off?
Last but not least, I’m having issues with my GPS locking my location in various apps. This is intermittent.

Thanks for the help as always guys.

Just go into recovery/CWM and reflash your ROM :)

Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache under Advanced, and Fix Permissions.

    Hopefully then it will boot.

If not, youll have to wipe data/factory reset which will cause you to lose your stuff.

I'm running RA v2.3, as CWM wasn't terribly friendly with my Evo.

I wiped cache and Dalvik, and reflashed it. Not sure what "fix permissions" is.

Is this essential to it working properly? I'm not opposed to wiping it all. I didn't have a ton of apps, honestly.

Fixing permissions is essential when you get FC's or permission issues. It takes around 1m, and it fixes the permissions that the app(s) has with Android.

As HAL told me, if you're flashing a new ROM, it's recommended to wipe the phone so it doesn't have any remains that can mess up with the rom.

I noticed there was one Flash test, the turning DNA/snowflake thing... the iPhone 4 skipped it.

I guess considering the thread, I should be running the tests on my Android devices:

I need to see how much of a difference Windows would do with 12 cores. OSX clearly isn't taking advantage...

The browser in Gingerbread isn't multi-threaded, and you're probably running stock software. I'm on CM7. :p CM7 = much more efficient browser core.

Wait, so my Infuse 4G beat a Transformer?! Interesting.

LOL. CM7 won't ruin your phone, but it might void your warranty to flash a non-stock kernel. ;) Android devices are pretty damn hard to kill nowadays. The Galaxy S series is _unbrickable_ if you know how to use a screwdriver.

Meanwhile: Sense kills... batteries. (HTC Thunderbolt)

I got ~503k in ChromePlus on my desktop - not bad for something with half the cores and probably at most half the RAM of ahlball's machine.

Been there, done that, felt that ;)

You will feel that way until you try it. First time I tried to install CM7, it soft bricked my phone. It didn't stop me from trying the 2nd time, which was successful.

    CM7 is definitely worth a try :)
