I installed this app the other day, it works really quite well:
It sends messages using your data connection, which in and of itself is nothing special but the neat part is that they appear as normal SMS messages to your recipient, so they don't need to have any sort of special app to receive them.
You can set the number they show up as coming from.
There's a 'sent from...' suffix on the messages but it's a small price to pay for what is effectively free international texts IMO.

Very nice. While I'm a noob at the laptop scene, I do have some experience with Android.
-
Too cool, I'll likely install both.

Great! Downloading now.

Glad to help you guys out.. I know AirDroid is getting a LOT of use from me. Had to pass it on.
@Booboo... Dice Player will be extremely useful on your Statosphere if you get CM7 on it. Video codec support was the only reason I was still keeping a Samsung ROM on my SD card. -
Nexus preorders!! I think I'll wait to see it at Costco and pick one up. They have awesome package deals.
-
If you guys are off contract and have some spare cash, consider grabbing a galaxy note. It's similar to the galaxy s2 but with a faster processor, 5.3" screen and a stylus. I'm Swyping from it at the moment and I love it. Best phone I've ever owned by far. It's probably the best and most powerful Android phone on the market right now. It's also getting ICS.

Wait what?

The Galaxy Note, in all it's 5.3" glory, will be my next device. Just don't know when I'll get around to ordering one. I'm really jonesing for the white one.
-
The white one is the one I got. It's beautiful, you'll love it. Here is a quadrant score I just got a few minutes ago. Kernel is modified with overclocking governors but the rest is pretty much stock.

I'm jealous, my buyers remorse just kicked in again. -
Don't be, the SG2 is great. My girlfriend has a white I9100 coming in tomorrow.
-

Yep. I'm ordering one tomorrow. Damn it.

I am, it's the only phone out there right now that makes me look at my SGSII and think there is something better I could have in my hand right now, the 5.3" screen, built in stylus, just awesome IMO. Maybe my next phone will be the Galaxy Note II.
-
I feel the same here...
-
I'm really tempted to get a note, just a bit scared that it may be too big for my hands when used as a phone.
Also the rumored motorolla razr with keyboard also looks quite interesting.

Recieved my Galaxy Nexus two days ago. I absolutely love this phone. It is so refreshing to be able to unlock the bootloader with one simple command
.
The screen is incredible-- all the worries about the pentile display really don't matter. You cannot make out individual pixels, and everything is extremely sharp. Also, it seems as though Samsung/ Google finally fixed the over saturation issues, as this is the most natural looking SAMOLED screen I have ever seen. -
How'd you get 5500? My note got 3100. No oc but will that make more than a 2000 point difference?
EDIT: Guess so. I just uninstalled a few apps that would bog the phone down and now getting 3800. I suppose a completely stock device+oc would achieve those scores. -
I'm so glad to hear some positive inputs regarding Galaxy Nexus. Now if only it is released in the US any time soon....
-
Verizon's been calling me daily trying to get me to upgrade my phone. I had to tell them to shove off until they had a release date for the Nexus.
-
You mean the Motorola Droid 4?
-
Well by stock I meant I didn't load external ROMs. The phone itself has tons of apps installed. Just to name a few: IM+, DropBox, DropSync, SetCPU, CPU Spy, BetterBatteryMonitor, various benchmark programs, titanium backup, musixmatch, poweramp, quickoffice pro, ezreader pro, lots of games etc. I've got it set at 200 mhz min with 1600 mhz max and I undervolted so its actually faster whiile using less battery power. Give it a try, I'm using the Abyss Kernel. -
Then that's not really stock at all...
(with regards to custom kernel)
-
Haha I suppose not. BTW if you guys want to see the white Note, I made an unboxing video a short while back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzXkUfyejYo

Way to show it to them!

*Beautiful* device. White and chrome just go together so awesome. -
I currently have 500 texts (in/out) + unlimited M2M for $10/mo as my minimum plan unless I go pay as you go. I can switch to their newer plan which is 1000 texts (in/out) but without the unlimited M2M for $10/mo as well. I'm fast approaching my 500 msg limit and it's only been a week into my monthly cycle, so I was thinking of switching to the 1000 msg limit, as my M2M msgs are only around 200 so far. Question, which would you pick for me and why?
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
You're on VZW?
I'd say look at your last statement and see what your M2M total was, then what was your total call time. If you're only a week in and already at your 500Msg limit, will 1000 really do?
I have the unlimited messaging plan, but I don't use the phone very much so I keep it at like 700 minutes. -
Actually, I'll just keep it as is. I have 50 regular in/out left lol but I'll just M2M or JaxtrSMS for the 3 weeks. I hope I can manage lol. Thanks for that recommended program.

Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
What shocks me is that the transformer prime is cheaper than the unlocked version of this and no one thinks of that...

H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
The note also has GSM/3G radios, a Wacom digitizer, and an HD AMOLED screen. It costs more because it's not meant to cover the same usage scenarios as the Transformer. It's got a completely different target audience. -

..............................well I think you're mean!
(Ok, no I don't.)

LMAO.

And the Prime in turn gives you less for your money than most comparably-priced laptops - you pay more to get things in a smaller package.

Soo...I've finally decided to exchange the phone, got my packing slip and everything ready, the new phone should arrive by friday.
What to do until then? Well I'm attempting to boot my OG Droid: Everytime I do manage to get the power button to respond, I'll see the motorola splash screen and then the phone will just shut off. This is incredibly frustrating as even though I won't have a phone for a day, I still need a phone.
Long ago when Hal gave me advice on flashing through the PC, I attempted it but the phone simply wouldn't respond/become detected again when it was time to flash through the app...doesn't help that the power button's broken so i'm likely taking too long to get the phone into the proper mode when i plug it in.
As such I'm 90% sure that I have a dirty installation of a custom ROM that's permanently on the phone. Bummer but them's the shakes.
I'd simply reflash my omnia from a "phoneless" rom but I can't find the stupid proprietary data cable. -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
You can text with Google Voice too.
Oh, life. Isn't it wonderful?! -
Oh does it show your number when you text? Learn something new everyday.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Not entirely sure, but I'm pretty certain it does...
-
hah i know. in the end i decided to just keep using the current stratosphere until the new one gets here instead of crossshipping it.
-
Having trouble figuring out texts via gv. Is gv sms a diff program? Whenever I click on text to reply to a voicemail it forwards me to my text program and can't seem to use GV to send it out.
-
I got my 16GB micro SD card from that deal last week...when I put it in the phone, it would just say "Blank SD card" and formatting would do nothing. Turns out I had to put it in my computer's card reader via a full-size SD adapter and format it there before my phone would recognize it. That seems a little counter-intuitive, no?
-
So I emailed VZW customer service and got this response:
On track to ANNOUNCE it this year.
FANTASTIC! -
According to BGR, Best Buy might have it Dec 11:
Galaxy Nexus may launch at Best Buy on December 11th -
Well, that's the stock-in date, not the street date. Who knows when we'll actually see it on the shelves.
-
since i use the iPhone 4S now exclusively, i'd like to "root" my HTC Desire. which "ROM" would be the best for my phone? preferably with the latest htc sense.
thanks. -
Doesn't the stock-out date also say 12/11?
Although... I don't work for BB so I don't know what "stock-out date" means. -
Check here.
I dont have a Desire so I cant speak from experience on its ROMs. But this goes for pretty much every phone, look through ones that fit your requrments, which one you like the looks and mods of, and one that "sounds good" as in speed tweaks, etc. Trial and error also plays a part
There's both guides on Rooting/Custom Recovery'ing and ROMs. -
-
12-11-2013. The in stock date is the date that Best Buy will receive it. The out stock date is the date they will stop carrying it. The street date is when it's available for customers to purchase.
-
thank you.
