The Toshiba Satellite that i use is simply rugged!

I've had so much done with it, including running experiments with & on it.

As an EE & hobbyist, I've used it in a lot of PC interfacing applications (some of which i designed, imagine me expecting the laptop to blow-up! :D)

I love it for its robust design & performance (especially during simulations my Toshi beats my friends' laptops), so i do my best to keep it in peak condition. I'm running 3 OSs on it as well, XP, RH9 & Ubuntu.

    Simply Greeaat stuff!!!

Toshiba Satellites are some the strongest, durable, neatly designed notebook computers i have encountered among many other brands such as HP, CQ, Acer, Fujitsu, Samsung, Asus, Dell, ...

Toshiba engineers are really good at what they do!

I bought a TOSHIBA TECRA M2V at a pawnshop just for parts and to practice taking laptops apart.
It was really abused, huge scratches, the area where the wireless on/off switch is was broken off, the DVD/CD drive would not stay in, one of the screen hinge covers is broken off and dust bunnies were peeking out of the cooling vent

I gave the pawnshop $100 just because it did start up, which it did surprisingly quick.
I took it home, took it apart and shot the dust bunnies before they could attack, tightened the screws and the DVD/CD ROM was now secure, put it back together and fired it up.
I was shocked on how well it ran, connected instantly to the wireless network, and it zipped along like a brand new unit. Actually a lot faster than a much newer equally equipped model I have as a spare.

I just couldn't believe this poor abused Toshiba was even still alive after what looks as if it had been used as a hockey puck.
In fact, I am using it right now because my two year old Gateway had an aneurysm (fried processor).
In three days (Friday May 30 '08) I am headed down to buy a matching pair of Toshiba Fusion Satellite P305-S8825 units, for the price of $969.99, I couldn't be more pleased (unless it was free ;) ).
A couple of days after I get them going, I will post a review.

this is what i like to see...im getting another one in the fall, i want a duo 2 core, but i will still most likely keep this one, i have to add another gig or two of ram, it only came with one, and im using it to capacity or close to, quite often...i hear two gigs-it flies...i cant wait.

I love my Toshiba. It is a survivor. It has seen beer, water, soda, koolaid & even eggnogg spills. But it is still running as smooth as ever after 2 years. The Toshiba I used before this is still running after 7 years of use.

The speakers and battery life, however, are terrible. But, apparently that is a problem inherent in the Satellie L25 model and isolated to it.

EDIT: Toshiba did lie, and stated that my model had built in WiFi, but as it turned out they forgot to put it in half the L25's they sold. I did get a nice letter from Toshiba apologizing for the mistake though. ;)

i cant stop raving bout my 'shiba...i continuously keep looking at lap tops and my shiba is lacking in only ONE area i can see really matters...and thats ram...i need at least ONE more gig of ram...but i m shooting for two...duo 2 cores are really not necessary for me at this moment but i know i want one later...i use barely a quarter of my hhd memory but its at 150g's new laptops have on average 140-60 and the more expensive ones twice as much...so not needed...my processor(s) are still being used in newer models...integrated camera still isnt as regular as cars with cd players, so i hate to loose out on it by getting a newer model and getting charged an arm and a leg for it..my graphics plays doom3 and hitman2...no sweat...i really cant ask for anything more right now..

I would have rated mine higher if Toshiba tech support wasn't so gawd untrained and awful.

How awful? I asked about the maximum allowed size for each memory module and was told that the computer could handle up to two-zero-four-eight-M-B. "What does 'M-B' stand for," I asked. "I don't know," the "technician" answered. Another Toshiba "technician" said the memory capacity was 160GB.

I have no Kingston notebook RAM, but I've had many Kingston desktop modules, both PC2100 and PC3200, fail MemTest86 or Gold Memory when run at SPD default speeds.

So.far this forum is the ONLY one on the web that praises Toshiba!!!
I just bought a Toshiba laptop and then did some researches on Toshiba; I know I should do other way around; and found nothing good about it except multiple crashing, blowup motherboard/graphic card AND the worst of the worst customer services.

So I decide to do some more researches.
By now my laptop is still in the box; factory sealed, brand new not opened yet!!!

    Should I open it????

hrudu have a little faith. Toshiba is a rugged brand! I'm sure all those bad reviews happened due to some valid reason, you know, bad news usually travels farther.

    Thanks Hster2

I went back to the store and played with it and I really like it!
BTW, the price of the same laptop went up by $150 this week.
Somehow it was on sale as I bought it!

Hi all, I am new to the forums, I own a Toshiba X200, this is my third Toshiba laptop, and I must say I will never buy another brand of laptop. I have had little to no problems with all three. The first one I bought I traveled around Russia with while teaching English, never had any issues with. I have loved using all three. :)

you knw if you buy a toshiba, you are not buying for gaming, so the ghraphics cars are more than sufficient for video and some of the good older games like halo doom3 hitman and the like...even some of the new simpler games like tiger woods golf can be played...crashing? i dont know what these ppl are doing to their lap tops, but my lap top runs like a champ and i bought it a pawn shop...im sure the last owner thought it was a pos, especially since they installed xp...the laptop was running like crap...now i have vista re installed and tweaked it...it runs like a breeze...i need that extra ram, since thats the only thing thats different from my shiba and newer models or better models...just the xtra ram.

So far I had 2 Gericom notebooks which ware great, and a few days ago I bough Toshiba. I was first surprised that thee ware no drivers and no promised Vista on CD - they ware only on my drive, I had to burn them on my DVD. OK no problem, I can live with that.

The biggest problem is, that darn Toshiba P300D versions only work with Vista - no other OS. And since I really don't like Vista since it's for total noobs I wanted to install win XP. I had to modify the original Win XP that I was even able to install them, because before that Toshiba just rebooted or turned off when I tried to install them. OK, I managed to install them but now there's no drivers for them.... Looks like I'll have to take it back to the store because I won't have Vista eating my nerves all the time with stupid "protection"...

I have the G35-AV660. Mine is doing HORRIBLE. I have had mine for just over a year and a half it has been back to the repair center five times. The motherboard has failed 3 times, the HDD has failed four times, the video cards once, the CPU once. I am actually getting it back from New Dimensions (an authorized Toshiba repair center) today, where it has been there for TWO MONTHS while we waited for Toshiba to ship out the motherboard (it was on backorder this entire time). Biggest waste of my money.

I am a college student. For two semesters in a row, my G35 was at the repair center during finals week. Right when I needed it most.

After many talks with Toshiba, they are refusing to replace the laptop.

Bottom line: I am done with Toshiba. If they are willing to ship out a faulty laptop and then not be willing to take care of their customers, then will never receive any more of my business again. Buyer beware.

There seems to be a lot of negative posts about Toshiba Customer Service and the quality of their notebook builds like this around the net. Hopefully Toshiba has gotten their act together for impending July 2008 releases. Here is an article stating their 2008-2010 notebook sales goals:

    http://tinyurl.com/6qyucn

Lots of luck if they don't support a hopefully better made product.

Overall I am very satisfied with both of my Toshibas............the poor P105 was purchased in Dec of '06 specifically to make the trip out here to Iraq with me. I bought it at Circuit City (I think, might have been Best Buy, can't recall exactly)and when I bought it, I also bought the $300 no questions asked warranty. About 9 months into my little trip it had a rush meeting with the floor of my hooch as it was on my lap while I was watching a movie in bed and a rocket decided to land a few yards away.....I dove off the bed in one direction and it went in the other. I shipped it back to the States to have it repaired, which was done no questions asked by Toshiba.

While the P105 was gone I bought my X205 from the little PX out here. About 2 months after I bought it, the primary hard drive crapped out on me and I had to ship it in for repair........again covered by Toshiba with no questions asked.

I've since decided the X205 would make a good "learning" platform and started various upgrades.............the processor and memory were the easiest, the hard drives were a nightmare..........Toshiba Tech Support was useless............and the Toshiba USA website offers next to ZERO support for 64 bit Vista drivers................but the Toshiba Europe support site has just about any x64 Vista driver you could need...........I'm typing from that system right now.

If I decide to buy another laptop, it will be a Clevo build from someplace like CyberpowerPC or Ibuypower.........I want better gaming graphics........but this one runs Crysis, World in Conflict and COD4 at medium to high settings, 1440 X 900, quite well so I'm going to see how far I can take it.

I like mine! Mhy P305D is the best laptop I've owned (and I've had a few of 'em now). The Toshiba has the nicest screen, the nicest keyboard and the best fit & finish of any I've had. I can't comment on longevity (only 3 days old), but so far so good!

I've had a brand I can't remember, with a Cyrix 100 Mhz processor, which ran like a champ for over 4 years
I've had a HP (with an AMD 500 Mhz K6-2 processor) that crapped out after 6 months (motherboard coming unsoldered). This computer had many problems - and was not well put together at all.
I've had another HP with a mobile intel celeron 1133 Mhz which is still running strong (6 years later)
A Compaq with a P3 933 (RIP after about 3 yrs of use)
A 17" HP with a P4 2.66 Ghz (still running, but running SLOW, HOT and LOUD)
A Gateway with a 1.4Ghz Celeron-M (still running strong after 3 years of daily use)
A Sony 13.3" Core 2 Duo Machine (doing very well, but is rarely used)
...and now my Toshiba with the new AMD RM-70 processor.

The Sony and the Toshiba have probably the best fit & finish I've experienced, but are aimed at 2 very different purposes- and the Sony was double the price. IMO it's hard to fault the Tosh on any front.

Any C2D CPU outperforms the 2.0 GHz Turion X2, so no wonder the sony was more expensive, and Sony is also a subnotebook given the 13.3 display.

So far I'm very happy with my Satellite U400 - it's a beautiful machine with nice specs, even given all the updated models now available. I've only had it a couple weeks, but I'm confident that it'll serve my purposes wonderfully.

I'm hating the Toshiba Satellite A205 that I made the mistake of buying a WalMart about 7 months ago. Its terribly, TERRIBLY s-l-o-w! Probably due to running VISTA home premium, plus bloat-ware like Toshiba Flash Cards. I'm wondering if I ought to uninstall that terrible OS and load XP SP2 instead. Anyone have any thoughts about?

I'm not sure what potential problems there may be, but if there are no driver or other issues from changing the OS you may like it better.
How many gigs of RAM do you have on the A205?

I think John Ratsey had a point. I own a U400 and I'm very happy with it, but I probably wouldn't make much noise on the board unless I needed help. The P300 seems like a good machine; you can find the nbr review and a couple user reviews for the P305 here. There are also several "is Toshiba reliable"-type threads in this forum, including this one. You can try searching "Toshiba quality" for others. Hope that helps!

    It does, thank you.

    I have another question:
The specs page lists the weight as 3.35kg "starting weight". How can I find out what the real weight is?

I believe the starting weight is for the laptop with the basic configuration, although some manufacturers have different definitions. If you were to upgrade the battery, the weight would be greater. The starting weight also omits the weight of adapters, etc.

You can read my thoughts on my Toshiba R500 here. So far, my biggest worry is how long the left touchpad button will last before it needs attention. Its action is less good than the right button. Otherwise the build quality appears to be good. And I'm baffled why Toshiba provided a big 60W PSU when the notebook appears to be designed to run on a small 45W PSU.

I buy a lot of laptops. 1 every 6 months it seems. All for business use.

I've bought Dell the last 4 times and have been very disappointed with the overall quality of the product (keyboard, touchpad, wireless). Toshiba has always used Intel, Synaptics products unlike Dell that uses Alps and some other company for the wireless mini card.

Now, I'm back with Toshiba again with the L305 line. Very basic but all that I expect and need from a laptop...great keyboard, touchpad and wireless.

Also, the L305 still has great ventilation. The other 305 lines seem to run very hot (even on Intel chips) to me. Sorry AMD...you chips just seem too hot for the $20-50 price premium.

Got my Toshiba August 1, 2006 and sold it just before the end of July 2008. Loved the laptop, never had any hardware problems. Had to bring it in a few times to reinstall XP Home SP2 since the recovery disc wouldn't recognize the fact that the hard drive had a space in the name. Installed Vista on it, ran perfectly fine with only 1 GB of RAM!

I have had numerous laptops over the years...IBM Thinkpad; Gateway; Dell Inspiron (2 of them).

My last Dell Inspiron's video card fried after about 4 years so I figured it was time to get a new laptop. I purchased a Macbook in December but just couldn't get used to Mac. Frankly, I couldn't see what all the hype is about.

In frustration, I began looking around for a replacement for my Macbook last month, even though the Macbook is only 7 months old. I settled on the Toshiba U405D-S2852. I got it for a steal at Best Buy (on sale one week for 250 off). I couldn't be happier. Great size. Beautiful screen. Feels good in my hands. Very sophisticated looking. And I love the performance.

In fact, I liked it so much I decided to purchase a Toshiba P305D-S8818 a few weeks later. I keep it on my coffee table so I can surf the net and work off my home wireless network while watching tv.

Great computers. And I don't even miss the Macbook (which I am keeping as a backup).

    first experience in a nutshell:
I now have a Satellite (A2--something model, bought in late 2005 on sale for $600 at best buy) that is a useless pile of plastic. shortly after the 2 year warranty was up, the screen hinges broke, and DC power jack broke (no reliable wall power), the battery terminal broke (no battery power)...... so now its worthless. it was a decent computer for 2 years though.

    2nd experience:

I paid lots of money for a "nice" Toshiba Qosmio (F40).... because it was customizable and I was able to get it with exactly the specs I wanted.

All I can say is, I wasted alot of money. I'm about to start looking into how to return this laptop. I would be completely satisfied if this was a <$1000 laptop I had bought, but I spent more than $1800 with tax and shipping and whatnot.

Here are the problems that I am frustrated with for the amount of money I spent on this qosmio:

windows vista sucks..... even after spending hours disabling all of its extra spiffy features, it still is less stable than xp and none of my old audio software runs correctly with vista.

the case isn't that great. the outside is a glossy black that is impossible to keep fingerprints off of. it would look great if you always handled the computer with a velvet glove.

the inside of the case feels cheap, all around the keypad. there are extra "media" keys at the top, and the plastic casing around them is just loose and flimsy. i can press the 'pause' button just by pushing in on the plastic part of the casing half an inch away from it.

the "deluxe Harmon kardon pro speakers" suck. of course laptop speakers always suck, but these were overhyped like they were supposed to sound any better..... if you turn bass-ey songs up above 70% volume, the speakers rattle the crappy case.

some of the toshiba software (that they assumed I wanted installed on my computer) sucks.... like the program for the fingerprint scanner is glitchy and unresponsive, the toshiba "media player" sucks (why do i need an extra media player when windows already has one installed?), and the laptop "power management" program doesn't work great (its supposed to automatically switch to power save mode when unplugged, and switch back to high performance mode when plugged in, but it doesn't always do this.... or sometimes it will switch, but the screen's brightness won't change accordingly....)

battery life sucks...... lower than what was advertised when I bought it, and constantly getting worse. the specs they post on the battery life must be under ideal conditions (i.e. not even using the computer at all)

customer service sucks.... the headphone jack on my qosmio broke, so i called the warranty number, and i couldn't understand his english, and he couldn't understand mine..... i asked if there was any i could email my list of problems and complaints to, and after checking with his supervisor for 5 minutes, told me "no, we no have email"

    AVOID QOSMIO
    AVOID VISTA
    AVOID TOSHIBA

i know you're thinking...... 'nah, it won't be that bad for me, i'll make it work...'

you might be right, but surely there is another computer out there with the right specs for you........ i would just hate to see toshiba rip anyone else off like they have done me.

sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with a toshiba.

my 1 year warrenty with my toshiba is almost up, so who knows how my machine will work once labor day passes... lol. Sofar though its working alright.

I have had to reload my system 3 times over the year... and sofar I havent had to do so since the beginning of the year so not too bad...

I having issues trying to encode video though not sure if its hardware or software related as it started happening as I was having temp problems (cpu temp were nearing 80C & GPU temp was up there too, near 50C), though i sprayed my system real good with a can of air so that's fixed for now... (windows dvd maker still freezes my system completely - will have to see about going back to Nero)...

strange thing though making the recovery dvds they never seem to work completely, only the one that the store I bought my laptop from and made for me seems to work properly...

oh yeah, would windows defragmenter affect the files in the recovery partition? i mean screw them up, as it can see every partition on the disc (see attached pic)

I have the Satellite A135-S2276, I just got the blue screen of death! Also, the mouse freezes up after 10 minutes of using it. I don't receive my m1330 until Wednesday! But I'm excited and I'll report back to you, I can't wait to never look at my Satellite ever again.

After reading many posts it looks to me like with many Toshiba owners, either they love Toshiba or the hate it. Makes me wonder if there is a lot of variation on build quality, or maybe some other reason.

    Consider this.

When a customer is satisfied, 95% of the time you will never hear from them.

When a customer is not satisfied, 99% of the time you WILL hear from them.

Filter this thread with that knowledge and I think you'll find that Toshiba makes a quality computer that, like any other manufacturer, occasionally has problems and when those problems occur for that 99% you'll hear about it......whereas the computers that go to satisfied are only talked about by the 5% of people that bother to say anything. ;)

Good advice. I will think of that as applied to this and other brands too.

    Hi,

I noted you bought a Toshiba Satellite A205-6812. I was looking at a Toshiba Satellite A206-5812 and the only difference I saw what the larger HD. Now my puzzle: I can't find you model at Toshiba or almost anyplace on the net. Where and when did you buy it? How much? I would really appreciate if you could help me with those answers - I am looking a a refurbished one.
    Goodwill,
    Luke

The place with most numbers of refurbs I have found is Tiger Direct.
Their prices are not always the best though, but worth a look.

    Do you like your Toshiba?

I did when it was running .... I bought a satellite m35x-s149 on eBay for about $285-$300 I forget now honestly .... about a year and a half ago.

I had ZERO problems with it UNTIL recently.

Before I had the main problem that I will get to in a moment the only other issue I had was whatever senses the battery being in it would be corrupt and I would have to unplug the power supply many times for the laptop to recognize there was a battery in there. Previously the battery would remain charging until the end of time and the light never went green STAYING its amber color. The Toshiba battery and power regulation software said it was at 51% and was stuck for all intent and purposes. Even after I got it working again when you would first boot the machine the sytem tray power icon would read 51% even though the battery had a greenlight and fully charged. It seemed like the laptop had Alzheimers or something.

After a few power unplugs and plugging back in and removing the battery several times at a certain point when placing the battery back in it would return to nromal for 3 months until it decided to glitch again.

Obviously I first thought it to be the all too common loose DC jack on the system board but it was not the cause. I still do not know what caused it. it may have just been the integrated memory dying that ultimately killed this lappie in the end as you will read below.

The other issue I had was the crappily built power supply ... not only did the insulator molded around the wiring split and expose the shielding but the two metal pieces that make contact inside the female end wore out causing it to not make contact any longer and appearing as a loose DC jack on the system board issue which it wasn't.

I threw out the power supply and used a spare Gateway one I had here rated for the power ratings and it fit and worked beautifully. Toshibas power supplies for this model suck to be blunt about it.

The other thing I did not like was that the speakers were where I would rest my palms up front on the laptop. Why this was designed like that is beyond me .... when typing whatever tunes you were listening too were muted by your palms. Lame. Most other Toshibas do not do this.

I never had the other common issues with the Satellite series like a short in the speakers that caused the computer to turn off on you or any other issues.

When the thing did finally die though it kept turning off on me while using it. At first I suspected a clogged heatsink/overheating so I did the recommended compressed air blow through the vent which does work for some satellite owners, I also used a small shop vac which has a lot of suction. Best to try things that do not require taking the laptop apart first to see if that remedies the situation.

The keyboard and underneath were not getting hot any more than normal and my cleaning with air did not solve the issue. I figured it was not clogged and after finally taking it apart it was in fact as clean as a whistle.

The laptop kept turning off by itself .... sometimes just as windows loaded or sometimes 3 hours later. Basically whenever it felt like it. No rhyme or reason to it at all and especially fun when you just typed a long winded response in a forum like I just did here lmao .... and it would turn off making you wish you had something to kick in frustration. I love my cat so I did not kick her in the butt.

Then I started to notice video display issues before it turned off by itself with lines and dotted lines and text characters which immediately told me that there may be a memory problem. Sooo I switched out the RAM to try and eliminate the obvious and tested those in other laptops around here that also do not work (good grief) but worked well enough to know if the RAM worked is my point.

Soooo okay .... time to take it apart. I found a website run by some tech guy who does this for a living and he had step by step photos of how these come apart which by the way was the absolute easiest laptop to take apart I have ever had to deal with. .... have some fun with a couple of Gateways and how awful those are to take apart and you will see what I mean.

So piece by piece I started eliminating hardware and trying to boot the computer up and piece by piece came back as not being the issue. No bad harddrive, no bad dvd drive, not the keyboard, not the mouse etc etc etc.

Finally I was down to just the system board, RAM and monitor so I did the fn F5 toggle and used an external monitor and still no luck. Not an lcd issue.

So lastly I had the system board out on the carpet with just the monitor and RAM .... yep still no luck.

Something, probably the integrated memory on the sytem board died. I did not see the blocked onboard RAM to unsolder and remove which is almost always located by the memory module plug in areas. I have heard of some Toshiba models that if you remove the onboard RAM that it fixes this issue and the laptop works again. I think I read some guy who had an A70 did this and then three others did it and they all repaired their shutdown issues.

But alas no such luck for me or the model I have and it would require a new system board which I will not buy for it as I did not pay very much for the laptop anyway. yeah I could get one for a lucky $120 on ebay "as is" or something but I have decided on trying a new company and buying a brand spank me new lappie.

Basically though this thread asks if I am happy with Toshiba and my answer is NO. It seems full of design flaws, cutting corners to save money to make the laptop affordable. They are affordable but these days you can find better for less money. With Toshiba i guess you do get what you pay for .... my brother has a higher end Toshiba laptop that has given him NO problems at all after a year and a half or so.

The only good marks it gets from me is that it was easy to fix yourself if you can actually have something to rapair. Basically I am going to list this for parts on ebay and kiss it goodbye and just buy a new laptop. Maybe someone on ebay needs a battery, a DC jack or spare monitor or whatever.

Yes I did buy this used on ebay from a company that rents laptops to business people out of an actual physical store. They did a fine job of restoring it and selling it on eBay, I got a fair price for it and it lasted a year and a half which in my opinion is also fair for a used lappie ... since laptops do not last very long anyway even when new.

I just was not happy with the system board dying and after searching around the internet seems to be a very common problem for Toshiba laptops. The top three seem to be integrated RAM issues on the system board, the DC jack poorly soldered to the sytem board and lastly clogging heatsinks and overheating also of poor design.

Until those issues are addressed I shant be owning another Toshiba.

I have 2 gateway lappies and a DELL that are also dead with system board issues. It would not surprise me if the same company manufactured all 4 since 3 of them did the same thing. it would be nice however if I did not have to go through almost a laptop a year .... basically I have 4 dead laptops in 5 and a half years. 2 of them were brand new purchases.

So there is my little Toshiba story. I hope I have some better luck with the next laptop I buy. if you guys are using Satellites and they are just hunky dorry then Godbless you and enjoy.

M105-S3004.... Can't say I "hate" the laptop itself but customer service has been horrible and the a/c adapters are crap IMHO. Considering how much I use the laptop and under the conditions at times that it is in, it has been very durable. I miss the customer service that Dell and HP provided..almost a "no questions asked" policy vs. staying on the phone with customer service with Toshiba for an hour then they tell you rudely that you are out of luck. Extended warranty was the worse decision as its a total waste of money so far. WHEW...I feel much better! lol
