I have two... one I bought in 2000 and it still works like a champ! Has windows XP on it and I absolutely LOVE it. My second one, an A135-4727 is giving me power issues and conveniently 2 WEEKS after my warranty has expired.

Just picked up this notebook from Fry's and love it so far. It's portable with better than decent specs.

I just bought a Satellite L355D, and was surprised to find out that its electrical adaptor is so backward: only 110V input. So how can users travel around the world when many countries use only 220V????? This is not as good as Compaq notebooks, whose adaptor takes 100V-250V. A very bad design of Toshiba. In addition, this adaptor gets hot easily. Is this the advantage of "Toshiba leading Innovation"????

Have a P305D-S8828 & except for a few niggling things, it is great.
Cooling fan is a bi too active & noisy.
Recentlt the USB sleep & charge feature broke. I cannot disable it. Even when the unit is on battery, the USB ports stay active.
Otherwise it is a very nice unit. My second in 5 years, the other just needs a new inverter board.

I have used mine for one year now, and I am totally happy with it.

I thought about buying a new laptop recently, but I really can't find any good chassis - IMO all gaming laptops are went just overboard with weight and bulkiness. 5+ kilos? give me a break.
Also Toshiba is unique by putting very high-quality sound systems into laptops. But I don't want "quad-speaker" layout like in Qosmios - totally pointless if you ask me. Dual channel speakers/sub are so much more efficient.

So I've decided just to upgrade mine. Upgraded memory to 4 gigs, hard drive to 7200RPM new WD Scorpio Black - now it totally flies.
Maybe I will upgrade CPU in the future, not seeing the need for it right now.

Currently I am thinking about changing the screen to one from ASUS G2P - lower resolution, but a lot better angles and brightness. I feel like 1680x1050 is too big for me, pixels are tiny and you can't run most of the games in this natively anyway.

I've had my Satellite M115-S3094 for almost 2 years now with no real problems. So far the only thing I've done is add 1GB of memory (came with 512MB). I'd certainly consider another one in the future, but a MB or MBP first! :).

I love my Toshiba! I've had it for two and half years and it has yet to give me problems. It's a A105 and came with a Core Solo processor (LOL I KNOW). I also upgraded the memory from 512mb to 1gb last year. The best part is that it was only $499 at BestBuy in 2006.

I try to take good care of it; leaving the battery out when plugged in, a cooler, and bi-weekly spyware and virus scans. I don't know how much this all has to do with it lasting this long, but I'm very content.

One thing I really like about my Toshiba that I haven't seen in most other laptops is the manual volume adjustment wheel. It's much more convenient than having the adjustment embedded on the keyboard.

How much more life do you guys think this thing has left?

i just picked up a toshiba x300/305 and love it.

my only complaint is that i wish they told us that this thing can support SLI. i had no idea after much research. i could have spent 300$ more and got 2 9800M GTS's in SLI.

but it still runs amazing, and i can max out all games.

im just wondering if its safe to take the battery out. it would probably be better for it, but if the power cord comes out from the back of the laptop, i think that woul hurt it more. its mostly because the cord is loose, and i like it loose so it wont break off, it just falls off when hit.

My Toshiba Is a G35 AV 660, it has two 120 gig hard drives A 2 gig dual core
processor, a firewire port, WiFi, Bluetooth, USB, and it can play the now defunct Hi Def. DVD's. But here's the real problem: it's dead. The Nvidea graphics chip failed just like it did in my G15, and my G35 av 650. Toshiba has posted, that they will do a free repair since the failure was due to bad engineering. (overheating).
Unfortuneately for me, I read about the free fix too late. I called Toshiba and told them about the failure, and they told me to call CBE to have it fixed. NO mention of the free repair program. When I called CBE They told me the repair would be around $1000.00 again no mention of Toshiba's replacement program.
Anyway, I brought the latop to CBE and told them to fix it. At that time, I had not read about the free repair posted on the Toshiba site.
It was the next day, as I was browsing their site that I found out about the free repair program.
Don't you think Toshiba should have mentioned the program to me ? They never did, and they would not refund the money I spent to have it fixed by their authorized service center. They used the excuse that my failure was different even though the symptoms leading to the failure were identical to the symptoms they posted in their repair article.
Toshiba cannot be trusted, and I am warning all of you to stay away from Toshiba.
I forgot to mention: everyone of my Toshiba failures occured just after the 1 year warranty expired.
So people, buy a Dell or an HP, or an Acer. Simply forget about Toshiba.
What I have said here is the truth, but this message will probably be taken down. Read it while you can.

I got my Toshiba Satellite A305-S6864 after my hp decided its BIOS was corrupt over the summer. spent about 1200, ugh to much i know, because I was leaving for school the next day. Ive really liked it so far, the screen works fine for me, the keyboard is a nice size, and the touch pad works fine. The 256 MB ATI card doesnt have issues with Crysis or Eve. One thing I dont like is how it seems to randomly turn its self on after i put it in sleep mode. Well that and the display driver issues I was having.

Not a day goes by that something doesn't crash or not operate properly with my Vista Toshiba. I find it quite annoying, really, and don't think I'll be purchasing a Toshiba again. Aside from that, the design is absolute garbage. I don't know who they have working on the design of this machine, but they should be fired because they are obviously retarded in the capacity of their job. The design of this machine is grade one art class. The keyboard, for the life of me, is not standard ... and, it is annoying as hell. For instance, the shift keys are not the correct size, and the return key is turned on it's side. Who the hell thought of this?? It's not much to ask for, to have a STANDARD keyboard with the laptop. Especially for someone who types a lot. Not to mention the flimsy plastic case. I don't know, maybe I'm just envious after seeing what Apple has just released. As far as I'm concerned, I would never use Toshiba in any setting really, because their product is not sturdy enough. And, I would most likely be replacing more of the product than I would if I were to simply buy a quality product to begin with. As for everything else, it feels like a video game console more than a productivity machine to say the least. It just seems like Toshiba is trying to cater to everyone, yet no one. For instance, the machine should come with a standard instillation of Vista and an optional CD of software, which is commonly referred to as "bloatware." I don't want this **** on my computer. So, why the hell am I going to pay a company like Toshiba to load up my computer with garbage? It just doesn't make any sense to me. If it wasn't for the price, I'd have bought a mac. It's no wonder they offer such a great warranty. If they didn't, they would most likely be going out of business. It's a trade off for them, I suppose. But, what I really think the heads at Toshiba should be thinking about is building a better product than trying to pull a fast one on the consumer by offering a better warranty. True, they should be offering a solid warranty, but also a solid product without cutting corners, which they obviously have been doing. I mean, is it too much to ask for? I'm not doing anything too out of the norm or intense with this machine ... just checking emails and listening to music while writing documents. And, nearly every day, there is at least one or more crashes. Toshiba is a joke, really.

I bought a A305-* model from Costco.com few months ago. It worked OK for about a month. After that the windows media player took over the whole computer. Every time you typed in just 1 letter or key, it would pop up. It was awful. I tried everything. I took it back to the store. Good thing Costco has 90 day return policy. Another thing I didn't like is the mouse pad and enter mouse clicker were too stiff. The HP laptops mouse and clickers are much better. I will buy HP again.

People love to b*tch. Toshiba has made some excellent laptops. I've used many brands over the years, there is no perfect one. Some Toshiba's have been very, very good, some not so good. My X205-S9800 seems to be a fine machine - very sturdy. Great keyboard, super bright screen, above average graphics (8700M GT) for gaming and video, best audio of any laptop I've heard in this price range for sure - really outstanding audio for games, music and videos.

I've used a lot of rigs, so I know a good one when I see it. But I don't like the design of all Toshiba's. So you have to do your homework and choose carefully.

Threads like this attract negative posts by their very nature, so take it all with a grain of salt. Oh, and Vista has been fine. No need to down-grade to XP as many have claimed, in my opinion. (Most games seem to run better under DX9 than DX10, but that's a DX issue.)

Anyway, I use mostly Toshiba and HP laptops these days, myself, even have an Acer from a couple years back still going strong and doing fine. So, again, you just have to evaluate each individual model carefully and choose wisely.

If there's one "secret" to getting a good machine, in my opinion, it's to 'lag the curve' and not buy bleeding edge units. I research units for 6 months or more and almost never buy anything on the market for less than that. The 205-S9800 was an exception (it was fairly new when I bought it). I took a chance ('cause I wanted that 8700M GT video!) on it when it was on sale at a good price and got lucky. But that's rare for me. Usually, I'm buying last years model on closeouts. ;)

Finally, I can't remember the model number offhand, but I have a Toshiba notebook (well, 16+ pounds, maybe 'portable' would be a better term), that I paid big bucks for (around $8k if I remember correctly) back in the 80's - plasma (mono) screen, runs UNIX, not windows, that I used for my consulting and sw development business for many years. It still runs last time I checked. Nothing on it ever broke. Nothing. Best text display and keyboard ever. Built like a freakin' tank. Still running 30 years later. Don't tell me Toshiba can't build a notebook!

    Cheers!

    Bron

Toshiba blows, I don't even have my computer yet and I am dissapointed with them. When I bought my X305-Q706 they said it would be shipped within 1-2 business days. I ordered it on December 12th, now they are telling me it is backordered and it will be the middle of January before they will have any in stock! The first thing they ask me is if I want to cancel my order! The notebook is not configurable or anything, it just is what it is.

Is this laptop by Toshiba any good if you would know?

Toshiba - Satellite Laptop with Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology
    Model: A305-S6872

I need a new laptop to replace an old Dell Inspiron 1300. All I would use the laptop for is some word processing, web surfing and email. If the model I have listed above is overkill for my basic computing needs can you recommend another Toshiba Satellite model that would be good?

Toshiba didn't include recovery discs with my M700, I had to create them myself. Same thing with my Tecra M4... I didn't think Toshiba shipped them with their laptops, but rather relied on the end users to create them.

Yes. I voted I like it in the poll, but as it's my first laptop as well as my own computer (mainly used up till now a family desktop), I think it's turning into love. ;)

    Toshiba Satellite M300/800*
    14.1" glossy screen
    Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo P8400 @ 2.26GHz
    2GB RAM
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470
    320 GB HD
    Windows Vista Home Premium
    WiFi 802.11 a/g/n
Other stuff (fingerprint, card reader, bluetooth, etc.)
    = $1350 AUD

    * The store sold it to me as the M300-T00. As far as I can tell, the only difference between the two models is colour.

    Positive impressions
    - the looks: I admit, I'm quite in love with the red and the black colour combo.
    - the speakers: not that you'd go to laptops for great sound, but the speakers are better than I expected.
    - graphics card: it probably can't run the latest games (nor do I want to on a laptop, really), but it plays Civilization IV beautifully, so good enough for me.
    - HDMI is nice, especially since I wasn't expecting anything as fancy on my budget (which admittedly was originally $1200 AUD).
    - It's a good weight for portability.
    - Not as much pre-installed software as I expected -- apparently Toshibas are notorious for it.

    Issues
    - The black keyboard looks pretty and shiny in natural light, but fingerprints galore show up under artificial lighting.
    - Though I knew what I was getting into with a Toshiba (plus I plan to run it off AC power as much as possible anyway), I was still surprised to see the battery barely squeezing out 2hrs 20min in power-saver mode. (Are my expectations too much?)
    - Some warmth can be detected when resting one's wrists on the edge of the bottom panel. The touchpad is often even warmer though, and not pleasantly warm either.

All in all, as long as this lappy doesn't off itself within a year, I think I'd be happy to buy another Toshiba laptop in the future.

hey sorry i know this is not the right thread to ask this but im new to this forum and just need help with this laptop i got so here it goes...

ok so my question is I have a satellite L300 toshiba laptop.its running on the T3200 intel processor and intel 4 series chipset. toshiba makes it clear that this laptop can ACCEPT PC6400 ram but does not say if it actually runs it at 800mhz or downclocks the DDR2 ram to PC-5300 to run at 667.

I need to know if this machine can support 800mhz ram or not so I can finally know if i should buy 800 or 667 mhz ram.

Of course I dont want to waste money on 800mhz ram only to get it downclocked if its not supported.

It seems intel sats the 4 series chipset (GL140 here) supports 800mhz ram yet my FSP on this processor is only 667mhz.

So im very confused and need help on this, thanks.

I've had my Satellite A55 for about 4 years now and it's been plugged in the whole time, it only hybernates when not in use, always leave the battery in even though we never use it, and it still works like a champ.

We spilled a cup of coffee on the keyboard not too long ago, the computer shutoff, we dried it with a blow dryer for about 3 hours, and it works like a champ again.

I'm dying to get a new one just for the heck of it but trying to hold off until Windows 7 is out this summer. I'm even thinking about loading the Win7 beta on the A55 just cause I like to tinker.

I rather like my Toshiba. I did jump the gun a bit on buying it though, but I'm quite satisfied with it, and would get a second if I needed one.

L305-S5921 here. Bought on special on Office Depot for $399. Can't complain for that price. And no its not a crap one either. Its got duo core 2GHz CPU, 2GB Ram, 160GB HD, SD card reader, DVD/CD burner etc, Vista Home Premium, not basic. All for $400.

have you tried, disconnect from mains then remove the battery and hold the power button down for 10 seconds, then re-assemble.

I take care of my 8.5 yr old toshiba laptop, (and sometimes not)....still going.
I believe laptops last longer than alot of people think. Is this outdated by a technical standpoint? You bet. But does it still turn on? write a mean paper? Play music? Surf the web? Yes it does. So be careful when someone says, "you'll need a new one, it's out dated." Chances are it really isnt. I hope you can keep your laptop another 5 years. Good Luck.

i want to overclock my 'shiba, but havent had the confidence, ive read on the subject and its seems hopeful and well worth the try..

a 1.5 can easily 1.7 and depending on its quality 1.9, though i dont think that is feasible for me. but i would be happy with 1.7
any way, has anyone overclocked theirs and still happy with their machine...or is everyone here just going from an out the box experience when you respond to you being happy with your 'shiba?

I recently purchased the A355-6998 Satelite and I must say other than the 16" screen, I like the laptop a lot. It offers lot's of bells and whistles including P7450 C2D, 1066 FSB, Bluetooth 4GB of Ram, 320GB HDD, FM Tuner, Bluetooth, Camera. I also like the shiny look, lot's of Bling, LOL. :D

i got one 15.4" celeron m toshiba from a friend, saying it was broken. the windows activation key had been ripped off and it had windows installed but wasnt activated. i activated it, it seemed to have a lot of useless software on it, including a softmodem. which bothered me, i dont know why i knew nothing about it. i think i installed mandriva on it at some point?
in any case, it no longer works, plugged in or with or without battery. i think it blinks like the battery is charging but stops when you try to turn it on.
i also got a 14 inch one with a broken motherboard from afriend.
i will check up on the model numbers but this is my experience.
i will also try to fix the one i guess...
