If you can post a picture of installed programs/drivers I can try to tell you what you can remove. Well, the best you can do is to do a clean install. But that will be more advanced.

Hmm, all right, I guess it doesn't hurt to try. Uh, would that be a screenie of the programs from add/remove programs or do you mean from the Start list? Excuse the doubt please, :S.

    Cheers,
    Patrick

    Hey,
I just copied down the name of the programs - was easier for me. I've added some comments after some of them, and I won't be removing any drivers so yes, here they are:

Note - I don't know what MS Visual C++ is doing there, though I might keep it if it comes in handy for engineering. Also, why is there a 2005 and 2008 version?

    -ATI Catalyst Install manager
-Compatibility pack for office 2007 office system
-Bluetooth stack for windows by Toshiba
-Intel matrix storage manager (what is this even for?)
-Microsoft office powerpoint viewer 2007 (any point in this really?)
    -Microsoft office suite activation assistant
-Microsoft SQL server 2005 Compact edition [ENU]
-Microsoft visual C++ 2005 ATL update kb... x64..
    -Microsoft visual C++ 2005 ATL update kb...x86...
    -Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 redistributable
    -Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 redistributable (x64)
-Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 ATL update kb... x64...
    -Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable -x64
    -Microsoft Works (again, what?)
-PlayReady PC runtime amd64 (And again, what?)
    -Realtek HD Audio driver
    -Realtek USB 2.0 Card reader
    -Realtek WLAN driver
    -Skype (TM) Launcher
    -Synaptics Pointing device driver
    -System Requirements Lab
    -Toshiba Assist
    -Toshiba Bulletin Board
    -Toshiba Configfree
    -Toshiba Disc creator
    -Toshiba DVD player
    -Toshiba eco utility
-Toshina extended tiles for windows mobility centre
    -toshiba face recognition
    -Toshiba flash cards support utility
    -Toshiba Hardware setup
    -Toshiba HDD/SSD alert
    -Toshiba manuals
    -Toshiba online product information
    -toshiba PC health monitor
-Toshiba photo servce - powered by myphotobook
    -Toshiba recovery media creator
    -Toshiba recovery media creator reminder
    -Toshiba reel time
    -Toshina SD memory utilities
    -Toshiba service station
    -Toshiba supervisor password
    -toshiba valie added package
    -toshiba web camera application
    -TRORMCLauncer (??)
    -WildTangent games
    -Windows Live Essentials
    -Windows Live Sign-in Assistant
    -Windows Live Sync
    -Windows Live Upload tool

As you can see, there's so much Toshiba bloatware <_<. I'd really appreciate the help.

    Cheers,
    Patrick

    P.S: I don't know if I've missed a few, but I guess that doesn't really matter. Perhaps.

Toshiba Bulletin Board, don't realy know what it is.
Toshiba Configfree, is one kind of modem driver. I haven't it installed.
    Toshiba eco utility, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXtofwUHwsg&feature=youtube_gdata
    I have:
    - toshiba face recognition,
    - Toshiba HDD/SSD alert
    -Toshiba manuals
    -Toshiba online product information
    -toshiba PC health monitor
-Toshiba photo servce - powered by myphotobook

Can you also run msconfig, and give me a summary/picture of startup applications ?

Well, I am not able to see all of them. But what I have disabled is:
    Chicony traybar
    Toshiba zooming ulitity
    FTPUPWDBank
    and
Windows Defender (I use Kaspersky Internet Securty)

If you can extend it I can take a closer look, as you see I can't see what the name of diffrent startup processes is. Espessely, Toshiba programmed, becouse they have Toshiba front and it is too long :D

I think you can disable Toshiba HDD SSD Alert. I have heard about this but not seem to bee usefull at all.
    Toshiba TEMPRO, disable.
Toshiba Zooming Utility, This changes the resolution of your screen. Simply, I don't like it.
If SmartFaceWatcher is connected to toshiba face recognition it is totally useless. I have tried it and it takes hundred of years to log on with it. Also, you must have light from right angle etc etc.
Addobe Acrobat, if disable this it will take a bit longer to open adobe products, but this slows down the startup as well.

There is some few I don't have and don't know where comes from. I have a clean install trough, and have leaved all the bolatware out.
Do you use Vista or Win7 ?

    Hey,
Uh, I'm using a pre-installed Win7 that came with the laptop when I got it. As well as all this bloatware lol. I most probably will be removing the face recognition - can't see much use for it, and quite frankly, it's not all that good: didn't recognise my face when I tried to register for atleast three to four times. Needless to say, irritating. I can find better programs online if I wanted. And, as for TEMPRO, don't I need that? It kind of tells whether drivers need to be updated and stuff right?

    Cheers,
    Patrick

    Do I like Toshiba, no.
Why, I use to work on the Toshiba Helpdesk which is run by Sitel, so its not Toshiba.

The fault they have are amazing ranging from HD, Heat, system boards, screens.
I have spoken to people who have sent their units in 3 or 4 times and they still don't work.

As for training, you are taught how to run the recovery disk, and if the end user (EU) doesn't have one they have to buy one.

Oh, you are also taught that you must keep the EU on the phone for 10 mins otherwise Toshiba won't pay Sitel.

There are so many better laptops out there.

They don't give recovery disk with the machines anymore, you have to create them. If you don't and the machine fails you have to buy them.

So what is a good laptop manufacturer then?

So far I've had the following issues:
    - Dell with GPU problems
    - Asus with faulty MB
    - Toshiba with faulty memory
    - Acer with fan and optical drive problems
    - Apple with CPU and screen problems
    - IBM/Lenovo which had screen inverter and keyboard faults
    - HP with overheating and GPU problems
    - Sony with battery problems

The only manufacturer that I didn't experience any issues with was Clevo/Sager but they are specialized in DTR's and have really bulky chassis and I'm looking for ultraportables and subnotebooks.

Well, I think this might say more about the efficacy of outsourcing your support than how good Toshiba's are. All manufacturers have problems, it's how you deal with them that makes the difference. No one that I know of is doing a really good job of it, but those who actually support their own products, generally do better. The problem is finding such a company these days.

That's one reason the 'barebones' guys are typically happier. They don't pay for what they're not going to get anyway, and they do pay for it, in alternate ways, when they think they need it.

For the average consumer, it's a crapshoot.

    Exactly!

I try to research specific models that have been on the market for awhile and seem reliable -- and then I try to buy the cheapest I can with the specs I need and cross my fingers. ;)

Just got an L500-1XC for my daughter... the first Toshiba laptops to use the new core i3 chipset. Slightly disappointed there's no Bluetooth but that's it.

So far it's been excellent and is very cool and quiet. Got 5% off at comet by buying online and collecting in the shop.

Largely happy with my Satellite A215-S7411. Two years old now, upgraded to Win7 and dual boots with Linux Mint. Also upgraded the memory with an extra 2GB stick. It was a steal and a half from CompUSA.

The only issue with it is the cheap plastic case has started to fall apart around the PC card door and the side fan "window". I knew this was a cheap laptop and it has seen alot of travel and use.

Now had the laptop for a month and so far still delighted with it! Still cool and quiet (though the fan has a slightly edgy note in a quiet room - you don't really notice it except when it turns off).

WEI gives 6.2 for the CPU, 5.5 for RAM, 4.0 for desktop graphics, 5.1 for gaming graphics and 5.9 for HDD

The graphics result is a bit strange; performance is usually the other way around with 3D gaming generally weaker than 2D. Works fine though.

    I have an M60.

but I got a gift from my brother, an Apple macbook.

Know I'm using my Apple most of the time because

I always travel, and my macbook comes in handy.

But my Toshiba is still great and working really well.

What I like about it is that, though its been a 1/2 year

I still don't see anything wrong with it.

it with stand fall 4 times. and it still okay. Maybe I just got lucky.

Received my Satellite U500 (i5-430m, 4gb mem, 320gb 5400rpm hdd, Nvidia 310M video card) yesterday. Overall it looked very nice, especially the matte finish on the laptop (no fingerprint smudges except on the glossy keyboard). Wish that the bluetooth can be turn on with a separate button. Like most reviews said, the battery life sucked! Definitely go with the 12-cell if you are buying one. The first thing that I did was remove some bloatware and then create Recovery Discs. How expensive can it be to package recovery discs with the laptop? My laptop runs pretty well (have to get used to Windows 7 when my desktop is still XP) and does not get too hot.

I like my Tosh A11-S3540. Having a Tosh isn't new to me as such was my first laptop (2001 era Satellite) which I was pleased with. But I strayed to Sony, then Sager ( happiest with their heavy duty desktop replacements-gamer models-). I came back to Tosh as an easily portable lecture laptop when my Compal based Sager ticked me off one time too many. Never will knowingly buy another Compal based machine. Plus was ticked that it had no sound device.

Back to Toshiba; I've had my model for 2.5 weeks now. It's behaving like a champ. Normally, I don't mess with new Windows OS until it's three years old. But Win7 is acting nice so far and runs ALMOST all my old software. I'd like to have seen the laptop with 4 unshared USB ports. I wish it had a lockable lid cover. I think the lid is a bit flimsy but that may be because my old Tosh had a titanium brace under the lid cover which I loved. I like the fact the Ethernet, power, and modem ports are in he back. This is VERY convenient.

All in all, I'm happy with my Tosh because at least for now it behaves the same as my original Tosh in terms of being utterly Trouble-free. If they make a model with at least 2 internal HDs, a serious graphic engine 1GB+, and a serious cooling system, I may very well reconsider buying another Sager to replace my NP9261 when In enter the market for that.

Other than getting rid of bloatware - including determining which of the multitude of redundant Toshiba branded applets I can safely get ride of, I do really like this notebook. I do occasionally experience sound break-up which is quite annoying as there shouldn't be any shortage of resources to handle audio no matter what else is running.

I have the custom built U500-ST6344. I ordered most (but not all) options. I have been using it for about 2 weeks on both a domain and a home network (Win7 Pro x64 installed).

I may have the oldest working Toshiba notebook in the world at cia 2000. (OK, second oldest, see above)
In fact I have two of them. :)

    Toshiba Portégé 3110CT
    Intel® Mobile Pentium II processor
    300MHz (1.6V) clock speed
    Integrated co-processor
    32KB internal L1 cache
    Integrated 256KB Level 2 cache
    Data/Address Bus Width: 64-bit/32-bit
    66MHz Front Side Bus
    Trident Video Accelerator 2.5MB 10.4" 800x600
    192MB SDRAM
    Toshiba 6GB 4200RPM Hard Drive.
    USB 1.1
    Fast infrared port (4Mbps, IrDA)
    PCMCIA slot
    V90 Modem
    Windows XP Professional SP3
    PCMCIA CD reader
Extender for 10/100 Ethernet, VGA, USB 1.1, Parallel port and power/audio.
    Weight 1.4kg

It's still going gangbusters and can easily run.... one process (Web browsing/Email).

By upgrading the HDD to and 80GB 5200RPM IDE you improve performance no end as normally 50% of the memory is swapped out and the original HDD was a 6GB and ran at 4200RPM.

With a PCMCIA slot most modern equipment can be connected.

    Bluetooth 2.0 PCMCIA
    WiFi PCMCIA
USB 2.0 PCMCIA 2 port Hub
    PCMCIA memory cards.

My 80GB HDD Portégé currently has PHP, Perl, MySQL server, Apache Server, Java, GOM video play and numerous other tools installed.

It's great for web surfing and a bit of email. Don't even think about video, it's not going to happen.

Now then, I wonder if I could install an SSD(solid State Drive) in the wee beast. :D

    A500/01M: Harvey Norman custom build
    P7450-2.13 / 4gb / 500gb / GT230m
Its a great computer let down by its CPU, put a T9900 or an E8435 in it and it would be fantastic
There have been a few problems with it though. They dont happen often though
    1. only 3 USB ports. 4 would be nice
2.Audio problems-sound sometimes stutters, tried fixes, none work, though it doesn't happen too often.
3.Computer Freezes on rare occasions- Screen has frozen and nothing but Hard reset restores it

I hear what you're saying, Look at the Nokia N8, you get HDMI output, WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0, 12MP camera, 2 weeks standby and 680Mhz processor.

But hay, it's not Toshiba. For that you'd need a Toshiba K01. :)

    1. I know your feeling
    2. This is related to your GPU which downlocks to save your GPU-Life! When the frec. changes the "suttring" sound appears.
    3. As you say, related to your OS.
    :D
    I like my HTC Leo.

I'm not going to buy Nokia again after my N97.

Toshiba Tech Support Furnishs A Toll Free # And Not An E-mail Address For Contacting.....i Have Tried Twice To Hear Over The Phone But Always Comes In 'faint' And I Can Hardly Hear. How Do I Obtain And Address. My Mini Is Being Repaired (no Sound) And I Need To Get In Touch With Them To Correct Some Info. I Understand They Are Talking From The Phillipines And That May Be The Reason For The Low Tone. Have Used 2 Diff. Phones. Please Advise.

    Toshiba Satellite M645-S4050

Fantastic machine all the way around for a power user looking for a desktop replacement. The notebook really came to life with an OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD and Win 7 clean install, absolutely flawless.

I bought three years ago a Toshiba Satellite laptop. After a year I bought another one for my wife, another brand. Toshiba now looks and runs like new, while the other does not work properly. Conclusion: Toshiba laptops are good. I am glad I am the owner of such a laptop.

    Yes, for sure...

I used my Toshiba Satellite M40 almost 5 years. I still remember that I bought this laptop for $1500. Great laptop!! The only one problem is about the battery life time.

Your Toshiba is a youngster. I am still using my Toshiba Tecra 700. Bought it 1/31/1996. Paid $5875 for the computer, plus $290 for the X-jack 28.8 fax modem and $315 for the Quad Speed CD Rom. A total of $6537.50 with shipping.

I don't use it much but, keep it in the office for one or two programs. I have since been pretty loyal to Think Pads, but am back looking at Toshiba or maybe even a MacBook Pro. I think it is time for a change.

I bought my A305 last June from Best Buy. It was a replacement after I didn't want to wait for my HP laptop to be sent back to the depot for the 3rd time since first taking it into the store. (BB didn't fix loose USB ports and did a makeshift job replacing the optical drive.)

The system ran hot (190f while idle) from day one despite the fact that I never ran games and only occasionally ran video editting software. Then about a week before the warranty expired the HDD failed (first time it's ever happened to me in 15 years of owning a laptop.) I had them also note to check the temperatures and loose fitting AC adaptor connection.

When I received it back the HDD was replaced and there was a note that the temperatures of the adaptor and laptop were within acceptable limits. About a week later I started having issues with the system always locking up. Doing some research I discovered that many of my issues were indicative of a heat damaged motherboard. I called in and was basically told that I was SOL since I was out of warranty and that they don't provide any kind of warranty on the work.

Needless to say I will never buy another piece of Toshiba manufactured junk again. I'm looking forward to receiving my customized HP soon.

    I have an L300-12H

the power slot on the laptop is extremely loose, and sometimes when I plug the charger into the mains sparks shoot out of the gap between the socket and the plug

I still love my Toshiba though :D

Do you have Wi-Fi turned off? Wi-Fi will drain your battery

Do you have Toshiba Power Saver installed?

I have that installed and set everything to minimum when it's running on battery, as well as turning off Wi-Fi. I get about 1.5-2 hours battery life while watching films/tv shows

    Toshiba netbook:
Toshiba nb305, 1Gb RAM, right out of the box.

The only thing I got "new toy syndrome" about was the track pad. It's a bit slick and seems to take a moment to figure out where my finger is.

I am very happy with the battery life, which was the final weigh in against some cheaper models.

Keyboard is fine, screen is very shiny, but I'm only on it for type and Skype.

I do like finally owning a Toshiba. ;)
