Dual GPU on one card! Ja, I was wondering just that myself. It sounds logical and I would imagine the dual cards would take up much more space in an already crowded case.

Anybody tempted to go quad core yet on any of the X305's? I may just add the T9600 too for the equal used price of a T9500. and yes, used is fine. Or wait for a good deal on a pulled T9800 for a bit more if worth it.

So, if Toshiba doesn't offer us the BD disc and nVidia 9800m cards (to buy as an upgrade for those that came w/ 9700M), where is the best place to go for good price since not much are on the used market yet? For example, will Sager or Alianware sell us one if we one an older model from them? I still have my olf Alianware P51 when the nV 7950M was new. can I upgrade that to a 9800M or drop in the X305 and use the old 9700M in the old P51. Any ideas?

Intel WiFi Link 5100 BGN? speed transfer issue, I figured it out myself no prob got it tweaked. I am still not satisfied w/ rang over 50' so I want to upgrade to the 3 wire 5350 BGN adapter. Anybody try this version over the current 5300 BGN?

Has anybody opened their system to confirm if the X305/X300's only have the 2 wire antenna system? I have pulled a 3 wire system from old ASUS w/ Intel wiFi Link 4965 just in case to use on my soon to arrive 5350. I do knwo so far it offers better range, bandwidth as well as some improved features. I'll add more if anybody's was the slight bit interested.

What about those 2 extra Toshiba partitions on the main HDD, can they be used for Windows? can I safely shrink the Vista partition to add a D partition?

The wireless card in the X305-Q701 has two wires connected to it(one white, and one black).

CQ842000 upgraded his CPU to a T9600 @2.8ghz. A faster clocked CPU increases 2.0 scores and ofcourse CPU scores, but has a minimal impact on the 3D scores. To increase his 3D scores he will need (and is trying) to upgrade his GPU.

    ok,thnx.
i posted a thread but recieved no reply,so ill ask here: is it normal for the x300 series to run on full speed gpu in vista. even when idling etc...
reason i ask is because my alianware laptop would switch between 2d/3d modes when needed. this would save battery life. is this a driver issue maybe ?

My onboard 5100 WiFi link appears to have stopped working. And no, I have not even recieved my 5350 yet so not even opened it to find out why yet. Has anybody else experienced this yet? Is it sensitive to long working days and lots of data trasnfer? Heat was not an issue, I kept it nice and cool in here. It is no longer seen by OS and led is out for good.

EDIT: After messing round and using a USB N adapter for now, I run some Intel utility test and it shows up now but as radio off. I move switch left/right and nothing, no LED or indication of coming on in Windows. I did nothing but get up for the house phone and came bk to no connection and LED out. Lappie was sitting on sofa stand as put for almost 2 weeks during my vacation.

has their been any reported issues with a fulty on/off switch? I know I'm replacing it so I want to know if the switch is still gonna' be an issue w/ my Intel WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350 AGN.

"So, where are you folks or otthers you know buying these nVidia mobile M series GPU cards? Example; can we buy from sager or Alienawre if we have current notebooks from them. Will they let usupgrade even purtchace as an upgrade? Or is there an outlet for builders to buy upgrade parts. "--Lappie

Thats the $64000 question, we know there is a x305 model that has the 9800m gtx so it is compatable. Finding the part number and or the vendor is proving elusive. As far as buying the cards from Alienware (Dell) or Sager, etc. is doubtful because they use mxm cards. The chips for the x305's are a proprietary form factor that isn't interchangeable with other types of gpu chips as far as I know.

would like to confirm something: im using the x300 series, is it 100% confirmed that the x300 11t model can accept another hardrive? (2nd hardrive) ?
is there a sata port or slot that it just plugs into when removing the hardrive cover?
this seems to be a great feature,if fact.

"2nd Hard Drive" Yes the there is a SATA + power connection in the upper section of the drive bay 9behind the stock one). You will not be able to fit any retainer or rubber boots so I just fixed 2 thick rubbber bands to each end to isolate against shock and reduce noise and it has worked great since. The lid has a tab in place to keep in place. I don't even remember if the upper SATA slot is big enough for the big retainer and I can confirm that you can get along fine w/o it as the lower (SATA1) HDD keeps it well in place.

    EDTI:

My Intel Wi-Fi link 5100 ANG is not dead. I dropped it into the old Alianware based on PM45 chipset (yes it worked), and it is fine. I need to trouble shoot the radio switch now and I will move this ? to a new tread since it may nit be spacific to this model but more in general.

    Hey everyone,

i've recently been trying to decide on a new laptop for gaming and having read some of the feed back and useful info on this thread have decided to go with the x305-q706 which i've ordered and should be receiving next week. While i don't expect to be disappointed and am sure it will be able to handle what i intend to use it for( Far cry2, COD4, crysis etc) i was just wondering if its possible to oc the p8400 cpu and if so to what speed would u advise as safe. Also in future will it be possible to upgrade the cpu to something faster (2.8 ghz or more). I'm not very tech savvy so if my questions are stupid bear with me! Any help or advise is much appreciated.
Can't wait to get my hands on this beauty!!!

Yes, you can overclock the CPU with nvidia system tools 6.03

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.03.html

i suggest up to 2.6ghz should be safe...anything higher may overheat it, and if not, stress it out too much.

also, you can overclock your 9800gts's through this program, however there seems to be issues with overclocking the gpu as users on the forums have lower benchmarks with the gpu's overclocked....thought the main point is that the cpu can be overclocked.

and it can be upgraded, all the way to a dual core x9100 at 3.06ghz...or a quad core qx9300 at 2.5ghz...

OK, back to the wi-fi issue. It does seem to be a toshiba issue. The pulled 5100 card works fien in an older PM945 notebook and yet a pulled known working 3945 and 4965 do not power on in the Qosmio. I keep getting message to turn link. I pulled and cleaned the front pannel switch and still nothing.

I also noticed the 2nd PCI-E slot and of corse the Wi-Fi link didnt work in there. So is this the Intel Turbo Memory slot and if so is it not activated by Toshiba? My other notebooks have this and can be used w/ the 2g/4g Intel Turbo RAM in a faster version of regular Ready Boost/Ready Drive.

Anybody have any creative ideas of how to jump start the Wi-Fi radio switch at front pannel to turn on link? It otherwise is still detected and shows as ready in windows.

    Good day.
Just got my x305-706, in first day both my dedicated video cards burned down, on first start system didn’t found one of them and on second start only integrated card were alive. Now it is in service waiting for parts. So meanwhile I’m wondering does GeForce 9400M chipset support hardware raid. Or this nVideo Media Shield is only a software raid (“fake raid” ;) which even slower than 2 separated HHD (I mean RAID 0)? There is hard to find any experience about this in internet, does anyone of you have an experience with trying this out?

Does the Windows BIOS ACPI utility run under x64 OS now? I had to downgrade to x86 OS in my old notebook just to run ACPI flash utility.

I am unable to find any information on Toshiba's UK site for the changelog...unless someone can correct me but I looked for 5 minutes, through downloads and bios updates for the x300 series.

And I don't believe the BIOS ACPI utility can run under x64 from what I have heard...as it won't install.

And the 9400 is just supposed to run when the 9800's are turned off, to conserve battery and lengthen the life of the components, but there seems to be some sli driver and bios issues for this laptop, as you cannot overclock it, and it has some issues with turning off the appropriate cards.

I haven't resized my Toshiba origional partition yet but I have some driver conflict issues and need to restore but when I do it is returning a BSOD on several dates. If I select "repair my computer" under F8 Windows boot menue will it do any changes to my added apps and folders and files or just the Vista portion? I dont care about the Vista stuff as I can put it back bu I had to use my 2nd HDD and dont have it w/ me on my road trip and need to fix it somewhat till I get home.

    Buzz buzz again.

Anybody try to insert an Intel PCI Express RAM card (Intel Turbo RAM) into the available slot in our X305's yet? Mine has the slot.

I think Windoze is not recognizing the hardware correctly but not sure. Just looking at Everest it shows the 2 9800m's under gpu's, but under windows video it shows the 9400m/single 9800m sli/ geforce boost configuration. Just based on various benchmarks, I'd say that is the case. Dual 9800m sli is not functional, think it's a windows issue.

For 9800M GTX overclocking, I believe you are limited to only adjusting the Shader Clock, and I believe it can safely go to 1700.

With the hardware issue, try this:

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

    1. Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
    2. Rename the Driver.cab file that is in the following folder:
    C:\Windows\Driver cache\i386
For example, rename the Driver.cab file as Driver.old.
    3. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
    4. When the Welcome screen appears, click Perform additional tasks.
    5. Click Browse this CD, and then double-click the I386 folder.
    6. Click the Driver.cab file, and then on the Edit menu, click Copy.
    7. In Windows Explorer, open the following folder:
    C:\Windows\Driver cache\I386
    8. On the Edit menu, click Paste to paste the Driver.cab file in the C:\Windows\Driver cache\I386 folder.
    9. Remove the device that you tried to install.

For example, if you received the error when you tried to install a printer, follow these steps to remove the printer:
    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Printers and Other Hardware.
    2. Click Printers and Faxes (or the icon representing the type of device that you want to remove).
    3. Right-click the printer that you want to remove, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm deletion of that printer.
    -or-

Use Device Manager to remove the device. For example, if you received the error when you tried to install a modem, follow these steps to remove the modem:
    1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.
    2. Expand Modems, select your modem, and then press DELETE. Click Yes to confirm.
    10. Restart the computer. Your new device should be detected and automatically installed.

If that doesn't work or really apply to you, then just run the repair utility. It shouldn't alter any personal files.

For the SLi issue, it seems as if its a driver-windows issue. Did you try other drivers than the ones on Toshiba's site?

Yes, you can buy that..however its not the P series like yours, so it uses 10 more watts of power. If you have issues with heat already, I suggest to get a P9500 that only uses 25 watts.

But, you could just pop it in and it would work right on spot.

When I come back on Tuesday, I'll dismantle everything again, and take photos of the individual components.

I believe the Q706 uses an nVidia chipset and they if it offered RAID could be nVidia NV RAID or any 3rd party SIS or what not.

I do know the Q705 is true Intel all the way and does integrate the AHCI south bridge into the mobo and fixed in BIOS but I cannot confim it will allow the install of the iostar RAID driver. If we have the ICH9R then most likely yes, but most only have the ICH9M-E SATA AHCI controller and the eSATA and CD/DVD have to share, 2 of the typical 4 ports.

Nvidia chipset supports RAID and there is an option in BIOS to boot from Nvidia, but getting error message that Nvidia boot agent is quitting because a cable is unplugged or something.

Yes, I know nVidia chipsets can support. If It is the integrated nVidia NV RAID it cannot be changed w/o changes to each a driver, BIOS setting and the HDD (data installed). An Intel single drive AHCI, RAID ready can be migrated from AHCI, single HDD RAID ready to RAID modes at any time in Windows after installing 2nd HDDr. (as long as the 1st HDD was installed as RAID/AHCI and niot AHCI only). Requires Intel Matrix Storage Manager.

Nevertheless, I have never had good luck w/ nVidia NV RAID on a desktop so I can't imagine if the mobile versions are much better. Maybe somebody using one can share.

I will post a few quick pix I have as soon as I up them to a 3rd party photo share.
