I don't care about RAID, getting good transfer speeds with what I have. Rather have a faster processor, think core2 extreme X9100 or QX9300 overclocked. Can always add an SSD when the prices come down.

Games that rely heavily on shadows will see improvements. You will probably see up to 5-10% of shader calculations, resulting in a boost of a few frames.

Nope, with overclocking the shader clock on the 9800M GTX.

I wouldn't update every BIOS that comes out...just update every other one, so wait for the next release..that's what I am going to do.

Hey friends, I am thinking of ,"upgrading", to Windows XP Pro X64, from Vista Home Premium X64. That way Nvidia Turbochache will be disabled, plus I can use DX9 exclusively. I've heard alot of users say that there is a very noticeable improvement in performance from switching even a tweaked Vista to XP Pro. Well I tried to install XP the old-fashioned way on boot-up, but got hung up on a blue screen when it came time to install. I have the XP Pro X64 with SP2. Does anyone know an easy way to slipstream AHCI drivers into the installation? Also perhaps where I can find them?

Thank you in advance for any help in this matter.

Sounds like a good idea, you formatted the drives and did a clean install or tried a dual boot? I'm thinking that graphics performance was better with XP too, hope you are successful. Pretty sure the only way to dual boot Vista and XP is to start with XP, then install Vista. Can't install XP if Vista is installed first. Don't know why.

I want to use the XP DVD to clean install XP over Vista, however, as is the case with Intel's SATA, there is AHCI which XP doesnt recognize. As well, Toshiba's bios does not allow you to change the option. So I need to slipstream the AHCI drivers into the installation disc. First I need to find these drivers.

Look up what it say is fixed. If it pertains to you and a situation you experience and want it fixed, then concider an update. This why they make them. If it has nothing to do with anything you have, then no need to update.

Install just like you have for XP Pro w/ F6 except now you can brouse for the ioStar AHCI/RAID driver directly from partition on HDD, USB device or floppy as so desired. If you wish to do a dual boot, the sure easiest way it to install to "2" discrete drives so they each have their own lloader unless you have experience on custom loaders for multi OS installs to same physical HDD or multi partitions. Choose the new or clean install for the HDD and or partition you want and either format, delete + create new pratition + format then install new Vista Ult x64.

    Hope this helps.

Here's some pix of my serviced and repaired Qosmio X305-Q705

    nVidia 9700M GTX GPU

dual PCI-E card slots, 2nd on most PM945 models supports Intels turbo RAM/Cache

Intel wireless Pro Link 5100 AGN, uses only 2 wire antenna but is easily upgraded to a 3 wire system in lid

    front pannel wireless radio switch,

    motherboard in chassis

You may bump this to top to help others and I will update as much as I can.

Basic disassembly requires only a #1 phillups driver and a small wedge of thing plastic and a thin flat nerrow driver. I use a guitar pick to sepperate top from bottom base and a thin 1/8" slotted screw driver to pry open top molding just above "F" keys

3 sizes of screws are used for this basic project. small, medium and long marked by Toshiba on chassis as F4, F6 & F10 respectively. "2" F4 screws are hidden under optical drive bay opening and "2" F4 secure HDD bay door and must be opened to reveal 1 single screw. "2" F6 screws are hidden inside battery box and must be removed. PCI-e card insert must be removed to allow for removal of cover.

start by gently prying one end of the top cover reviel molding that extends from top left to riight just above "F" keys. Pry just enough to get one end out and gently lift away a little at a time across toward the other end.

Then remove one F6 screw on bottom just near sub woofer grill to release optical drive, use a fine paper clip extended to poke in front slot of DVD door to open and pull out.

Working from bottom, remove all the F10 and F6 screws from bottom including the ones mentioned above. working from top, remove 4 F6 scres that secure keyboard to top cover. remove 3 more scres inside under keyboard. Disconnect each teh top left and right speakers and 4 ribbon cables for touch keys, PWR, volume and touch pad.

Now, here's where the guitar pick comes in handy as to not mar up the case plastic. Working from one side closest to monitor, wedge pick inbetween the top end bottom and carefully work you way around to the other side. If you get stuck, recheck to see you got all the screws out (about 22 combined at bottom and 8 combined on top). You are now ready to lift top cover off from base.

Additionally, for those asking, "yes" a 2nd fan is fully workable in the space to the right of the CPU fan. You only need to tap the power off the 1st fan and find a neat way to fasten it in place as to not rattle around. I found one perfect canidate to fit just fine.
This a power mosfet mounted on my ASUS Maximus mobo but has come w/ lots of high end ASUS mobos since the P5ND2. It features the same dual top/bottom pull and one side push style. You can always find them on the OC forums and eBay for sale used. I would wire it so you can switch it on for gaming and leave off for everyday use, just an idea.

    Hope this helps!

Went ahead and picked up a second identical hard drive 320gb 7200 rpm from newegg for $69.99 after $20 mail in rebate. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145228 Also installed the 180.20 drivers from laptopvideo2go but they weren't any good for this machine. Tested them several times with 3dmark06 and crysis benchmarking tool and got slightly less performance. Everest reported the gpu clocks at about 25% of the original and the drivers were not very stable anyway. Windows kinda shuddered when closing them like the gpu was overclocked too much or something.

I noticed that to about the new video drivers from nVidia. Was it a beta? what is the last final or known stable for the 9700M-GTX? I am not able to do things I was able to do in the Silent Hill 5 game I did before. It feels like it uses more resorces or something.

I'm not sure, but think you guys just need to add that Nvidia 100 something or another chip that emulates sli thing. With that you can oc the cpu just like mine. Soon as mine is disassembled we will have confirmation, but think we have the same motherboard just a separate chip attached via pci express. CQ already asked for the part number, think he can make it work?

Nice results, but I'm sure it can do better. As for making it work, that is dependent on numerous factors. One being whether the chipset is an external solution, two being whether the 9800M GTS is truly a dual card solution or just a single card dual gpu solution. Second for anyone with a 9800M GTX, the whole community of qosmio owners will benefit from knowing the part numbers.

    Hey cq842000!
If you still experiencing blue screen trying to install WinXP, try to down clock you memory and FSB, probably it should work out. I was experiencing this trouble while installing WinXP some years ago, and this trick worked for me.

Yes i know that, but I'm not really worried about the chipset, just the gpu(s). as for the mobo, it can be bought for around $370. I have an extra one if anyone is interested.

What is the card (vented metal top w/ red wire) for in the 2nd PCI-E slot opposite teh wi-lan?

Are you sayiong the SLI cards have additional screws from behind? If so, once you have the top cover off, you only have 3 more mobo screws to go to lift it the mobo out. 2 will be under the PCI-E mounted devices, and the 3rd is somewhat in the center, black w/ square copper surround.

So I guess these Qosmios do not utilize the Intel Turbo Memory? Cause on my other mobo, a PM965, that slot is for exactly that.
