I got the drive off Ebay, this link: http://cgi.ebay.ca/Lite-on-Philips-...14&_trkparms=72:1215|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318

It is Sata, and is a straight swap, no drivers necessary. Just remove the drive from the usb case, and use the Qosmio one as a second drive if you like. Power DVD 9 Ultra gave me playback problems ie: didn't work, and it turned out to be copy protection issues. After tech support from Cyberlink that involved some regedit stuff, I was no further ahead. In desperation, I downloaded a trial version of AnyDvd, and voila, full function. No one should have to pay for a second program to make the first program work, but the added benefit is that Any Dvd will allow you to rip the Blu-ray onto a hard drive minus the copy protection, or with it if you choose. I bought Daemon Tools Pro Agent, and it can create virtual Blu-ray drives! So, now I'm enjoying Blu-ray minus the hassle of optical disks!

    This has only happend one time but;
I prepareed to watch a movie, but it ended with that I got smal dots on the screen. Just as dead pixels. And a short time after I got I god bluscreen. I downloaded and installed the offical drivers form Nvidia. Then the problem disappeared but overall scoore was less. So I installed the OS again and now it works whit DOX drivers. I saw two movies yesterday and had no problems.

But, now I think that the temps are sometimes a little high (86C during the game yesterday). Also 3dMark06 score whit overclock has gone down to 10k :(
Also, I remember someone from this foumet said that dox drive were not good for Overclocking and become unstable.

Yeah Dox drivers are supposedly not the most stable when it comes to overclocking. however i have been able to overclock my 9700m to 700/1100/1900 from 530/701/1300. the shades is a 600mhz increase!!!!!!!!
so tunay ill send u a pm with links for a few programs to optimize your computer and see if that helps.

Been reading this message board for a while and boy does the x305 need one too.

I put off posting here as I didn't want to just have a moan about the laptop as at the end of the day it is keeping me entertained and imagine what I would actually have done with the hours and hours of my time that I have spent re installing drivers, and windows, trying to get things working. I bet after reading this some will wish I had left it a little longer too. So I’m sorry in advance.

I bought a x305 701 in New Zealand, as I was on my backpacking year, and yes I know not the lightest thing to be lugging about while traveling, but I wanted something good enough to handle enough games to keep me entertained on an evening and I am never up for an easy life. It impresses customs when you whip it out of your laptop bag to put it in the tray to go through the scanning machines and they have to get the heavy set guy from out the back to come and free the thing from its jammed position inside the machine.

I should have known that this wouldn't be a pain free exercise from the first Toshiba laptop I had which, after crashing from duff memory, had to have windows installed again. After the restore disk wiped the hard drive and then attempted to install windows again, it then decided that it wasn’t on speaking terms with the recovery disc and simply refused to read it.
Some sort of lovers tiff I think, although I didn’t like to ask.

But you know what we the gadget generations are like, we see something on the net or in a shop and we think I'm having that!! So knowing that I was moving on from the city of Auckland the next day I went and purchased the red devil and marched back up the road past a huge demonstration in the streets for world poverty and the situation in Palestine, with me walking the other way with about $3000 NZ dollars worth under my arm ( Yes I did have a good think to myself )

For about one day I was totally over the moon with it, I am hoping this is a record and will be expecting my certificate in the post, please have my name correct for my mothers sake as she is sick of having them, on the wall next to the pic of me on graduation day blinking and wearing white socks, with my name spelled wrong.

The first thing to go was the touch sensitive buttons, which stopped working from the second boot up. I thought it might have been to do with some strange combination of windows updates so set about re installing the drivers for the added value pack and everything else people in this message board suggested. As I was in the next town by then I had no chance of returning it, so I had to get my brain around to the idea I wouldn’t need them, that’s the British in me. Next was the very etchy, stop, starty graphics during games which still hasn’t been resolved with updated graphics drivers.
By the way I love the springy keyboard and finger prints I don’t know why people don’t like them It adds character. I think the looks of it are great about time us guys started venturing away from the hard decision of picking black or silver when we buy electrical goods.

I’m in Korea now working and have just bought a Samsung 24 inch monitor so I can watch DVD’s better. So I got the one with HDMI. Come on hands up if you have it working properly; let’s see them straight up in the air, any at the back there? Wow one full day and a re install of windows later. I have it running using the Analog only. Every driver for the graphics has a different combination of outcomes. The best I get with the HDMI is either a small box in the middle of the screen which is blurred and strange looking, or full screen and also blurred and strange looking. Some of the drivers just make both the laptop and the Samsung go black.
I still can’t believe that the latest Nvidia driver is a beta come on guys get your fingers out and do some work get our machines working without the stops and start pausing and get Hdmi working and don’t just blame peoples cables it isn’t washing with me son.

Hey the lights came back on when I take the battery out of this thing but now it starts programs up itself and stops working once the laptop heats up. All those whose touch buttons don’t work, honestly try this. Put it somewhere cold over night, with all the drivers on of course, and see what happens.

And the last one before I’m lynched from one and all the DVD drive went missing from my system had to find the little reg edit that put it back again.

When we spend sometimes thousands on electrical equipment, and not just laptops but it seems everything these days, and what we get is absolute dribble, poorly made, shockingly supported things that don’t even work properly people will tend to feel a little let down.

Thanks for sticking with it guys hopefully it was a bit light hearted, Britain’s in a depression you know!! Great site keep it up guys as it’s always helpful. And if cooling the thing gets ya down just stick it in a bucket of mineral oil and use a external keyboard and monitor.

    Cheers

Finally recieved my new toshiba unit and my god am I impressed.

I have the X300-13W which has:

    QX9300 Quad core
    4gb DDR3
Dual SLI 9800M GTS and 9400 G Graphics
    Dual 320gb Hard Drives.

It is a serious machine spec wise. I managed to get a refurb which bought the cost down to £1050. It was as new.

I've managed to clock the processor to ~3.2ghz stable running at around 60c which is now a profile for when it's needed.

Basically i almost missed this machine completely as toshiba seem to have not done the same PR as other companies. Everything about the machine is truely marvelous. The recovery system even has a option to switch 32bit to 64bit with no hassle. Stunning graphics performance... I need not go on.

On the down side a couple of critisms:

Keyboard flex :( sounds like an elephant has jumped on the keyboard as a key is pressed... apparently fixable with a credit card under the keyboard?

Alps touchpad isn't quite synaptics, takes some getting used to.

Design. Is marmite but I happen to like it.

Screen. Too blue and quite pale compared to a lot of screens. Could have been a deal breaker if i didn't have a nice 24" sammy on my desk.

Other than that spot on toshiba. Next step is a nice ~128GB SSD for the primary disk and it'll be truely on the money. Oh and a padded 17" backpack.

    Hi tomcom2k
I have seen your model here in Norway too, and must say that is a crazy machine :D
But it cost dobbel as mine :D (x300-13o)
Toshiba is dead to me, I never buy a toshiba product again ;)
    --------
Okay, I have installed 185.20 and I my results at GTA IV benchmark is the same with 185.68 DOX @ O.C
I realy like this one :D
But, O.C dosen't help any more. I think it is becouse CPU. CPU ussage at both tests is 97% :(
Have not tryed 3dMark06 with this driver yet :)
And a windows like this just came up after I installed this driver. :S

What is this, wrong chipset driver :D

NOTE: I see that Rockstar Social Club is open but it not from it...

Sorry IainOb1 that you've had those difficulties. I've had flawless performance from my unit. I'm even running Blu-ray from 2 external esata drives via an ST Labs express port adapter. The HDMI can be software switched by Power Dvd Ultra to allow audio out the fiber optic (headphone) jack, cool for me as I've a monitor with HDMI but the audio goes to a Denon receiver. What I haven't done is around with the video drivers yet, as they haven't failed me. And I LOVE updating drivers. Sometimes it ain't worth it. For the record, I love overclocking and modding. Here's a link to one of my videos showing my tower: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CToTmwmXq8A

3dmark06 will arrive presently... 13488 on safe 3ghz clock with slight OC on GPU

I dont think all of the toshiba x300 series use the same components.

I just installed the nvidia system tools and it has a really nice overclock utility for CPU, RAM and GPU. You can set it to autounclock on overheat etc.

Also the extreme processors have unlocked multipliers which helps hugely.

I have the qx9300 cpu but can't seem to overclock in nvidia system mine is grayed out. Someone did mention that the x300/305 using the intel chipset can't overclock. You must have the non intel chipset for this ability.

Look at my cpu core frequency in nvidia system @4454mhz WTH

Hello Everyone. Just ordered/recieved my Q706 a few days ago overall I'm pretty satisfied with it. I spent weeks researching other laptop companies and this one appeared to have great reviews and it seemed to be the most bang for the buck. I'm pretty aggravated at the SLI, mine advertised 9800 GTS SLI and from what I've read, and the fact I can't get any video drivers to work with this thing besides Toshiba's, that this is similar to the 9800GX2 which is a gimmick card. I'm thinking that I should have went with either a laptop with single 280GTX or one with true dual dedicated cards running SLI. Anywho, it plays my games pretty well, and I appreciate the post on how to change the colors on the LCD via the Nvidia control panel, my HP laptop had such rich colors I was a little taken back with the bland default settings on this one. I created a dual boot partition and tried installing Win7Beta 64 bit, but I recieve a blue screen error during the install process, and I'm not sure why, are you guys running 32bit or 64 bit? I wonder if Win7 hates my hybrid gimmick SLI card.

    Hi!
When do you ask about 32 or 64 bit, do you mean Vista or Win7 ?
I tryed one of the first beta long time ago, 7000 i think it was. I was unable to find drivers and vista drivers didn't work well at that time. I have not testet the lastets one instead of it I'm running Vista Home Premium x64 SP2 ;)
A huge diffrence when it comes to performance...

Well I installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit as a dual boot to see if I could get everything to work, and I do have everything working. Its pretty easy if you right click the rogue devices and Browse for drivers and point to the factory partition, it found everything. I haven't figured out the function keys yet, or the pretty bling controls at the top.

I'm asking if you're running 32 or 64 bit Windows 7 Beta, I tried installing Win7 Beta 64 bit Ulitimate and its blue screening on me...I figure it hates a device or something on my machine.

ah understad. I installed x64 and had no problem under installation. But like I said, I it was long time ago :D
But I was not able to install XP x86 (32-Bit). That gives me bluescreen, like you say under installation. I tryed that becouse the application I needed was not able to run on vista :D

I don't know why It gives bulescreen. Maybe like you say it is a incompatibilt device in your machine... Hope that Microsoft fix it :D
Wich bulid do you try to install ?

Yes, Its trying to locate a driver for someting .. probably the video card is my suspicion. I downloaded the latest build off of my MSDN, it is possible its a corrupt build or disk that I created. I've seen that throw blue screen as well during install. I'll try some different things.

    Well I am awfully surprised.

I gave ubuntu a go on my x300-13w...

Apart from a few issues with the nvidia driver which i sorted on the console, everthing works.

    Sound
    Native 3D Accelerated Resolutions
All 4 Cores of the CPU
    SD Cards
    Bluetooth
    HDMI
    LAN
    WLAN

    All out of the box

Linux doesn't support Hybrid SLI so theres no chance of that working at the moment.

But everything works well. I cheated on the installation by using windows program WUBI, I installed ubuntu 9.03. Once installation finished connected to wireless lan. I then installed "ubuntu-restricted-extras" for windows fonts and codecs, java, flash etc. Installed the nvidia driver manually. Then installed winedoors and subsequently photoshop cs2.

Happy days, lightning fast and 20 seconds boot time.

Blah...still can't get passed teh ACPI.sys error when windows 7 is trying to load at the splash screen. I've read that I might need a BIOS update. I currently have v1.5 on my Q706, and Toshiba's site only lists that one as current, is there another place you guys get your BIOS drivers? I"ve seen where some folks have v2.1 or something.

Understood, figured it wouldnt' hurt to ask.

Making some headway on my Win7 Ultimate install concerning the ACPI.sys blue screen that i get on the Win7 splash screen. I disabled multicore processing in the BIOS and it boots right in, so once the install is finished I'll enable for both cores, and see if it boots.

    Hi
It is a nightmare to open the x300, I have tryed it by my self and it it too many connections between the upper part and underside.

If I had so much information about this computer before I bought it as I have now, I had not bought it. But this is my opinion

Dude55 has more information about this.

Yeah, its something with the Bios or the Win7 Beta, because once i re-enable both cores I get the ACPI.sys error message upon boot.

I got an email from M$ this morning that the Windows 7 release candidate is ready for download. This will prove that its either BIOS (leaning more towards this) or Windows 7.

Yes, I love Asus laptops. I have used two Asus laptops (before this one) and both was much better (qualty) then this qosmio. I'm not going to buy AlienWare, becouse they don't have support for my country...

    Asus is
Worst thing about my laptop now is; I can't sell it too, no body want it :D

And one last thing; Toshiba sucks at service/supprt. Keep that in mind, you are all on your own...

    Hi Everyone,

Firstly, just wanted to thank Dude55 for his great feedback to my first trend...

I have since purchased the "used" X300-033019 and have used it for the past few weeks and now found a few potential minor bugs? Hence, I need some of your feedback on these to see if these are really bugs or just "normal" querks associated with the X300:

    (1) Battery Charge: 2 days after buying the unit, I found that a fully charged battery only gave me 30 minutes of total usage time before the system shuts down and need to be connected to an electrical outlet... After changing the battery to "power saver option 2 - lower performance but increase battery charge" on vista, I still only got 30 minutes of usage time!!

So, thinking the battery pack is crap, I took laptop back to store and they gave me a brand new toshiba battery pack (right out of a new X300-02 machine that they opened onsite)... I got home, charged it up for 4 hours and found that the new battery only give me 1 hour of total usage time before the system shuts down again... I use this laptop as both a gaming machine AND for university... thus, it's hard for me to do work at the university as they have limited AC plugs that students can plug into...

Can some of you please advise how long your battery packs go before you need to charge it up again? Also, any other settings that I need to make on vista or toshiba's power assist program to increase the battery charge life??

    (2) When watching DVD movies or .avi files on Windows Media Player, I find that the first 5 seconds of the movie runs at superspeed while the voice and audio track runs at normal speed... The movie will then freeze until the audio tracks catches up to it and then the movie plays normally....

Also, when I manually skip the movie ahead using the slide button on Media Player, the movie does the same thing where it goes superspeed then freezes until audio catches up...

I know this is NOT normal as my other desktop running on XP has no problems like this on any of the movies I load on or view on it...

Can you please give me some feedback on how to correct this problem...
What settings should I be changing?

    (3) Last thing: when typing email or word documents on the laptop, the cursor jumps all over the F'in place -- to the top of the paragraph, middle of another word etc... Is this a problem with the keyboard?? could the former owner of this machine hammered the crap out of the keyboard to where a button is stuck and thus causing text and typing to go all over the place??
I know that many have complained that the keyboard is too springy...

Any feedback on this is also greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for everyone's feedback and support. Sorry for being a newbie but this is the first laptop that I decided to invest in and I'm also not a computer person...

    Cheers,
    K

I just performed a dissassembly recently using the guide posted on this forum. I must say it was quite a challenge. It is like playing a 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle.

They've made this notepad nearly impossible to upgrade for the enthusiast. The Gateway FX line is so easy to upgrade, unfortunately the quality is not as good as Toshiba but not by much.

    1. If the X300 is the size of the X305 then I don't understand why you would be using it .. as a mobile solution. Its more of a desktop replacement, or something that you carry to a LAN or friends house once a week I would never travel with this thing. My X305 has 3 video cards, one on board and one Hybrid SLI gimmick dual proc thing on one wafer posing as 2 dedicated cards (thanks Toshiba I hope you burn in hell for your misleading product details). When I unplug the Power supply the SLI wafer disables and the laptop runs off of the one onboard. Even then the batter lasts maybe 30min - 1 hour tops.

    2. I think the lower part of your palm might be hitting the mousepad? Try disabling it by Function + F9, and then type...this will troubleshoot if you have a bad keyboard.

I have runned on battery only 1 time.

    lol :D
Yeah, I even not touched the under-part. Like you say; nearly impossible

the issue with the toshiba is the drivers for the dual 9800m gts's. they are unreliable and dont provide the results they should be providing. also, switching from the integrated 9400m g graphics to the 9800m gts in sli is problematic. the gpu's wont be able to be upgraded so far, and if they were, there wouldnt be any bios to support dual 9800m gtx's im assuming.
basically you can add another hard drive to have up to 2..you can upgrade the RAM to 8gb, you can replace the CPU, although it is a pain, (and through nvidia system tools you can overclock).

and at its highest potential, a 9800m gts setup in sli will smoke a 280m gtx (the fastest single card) by at least 10-20%. however toshiba doesnt offer the 280m gtx, they only offer a 9800m gtx single or a 9700m gts. the 9800m gts in sli should score around 13-14k, but they are really nowhere near that with the current video drivers.

http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=23698 hybrid drivers that could provide better performance than stock 9800m gts sli drivers from toshiba. just install these without uninstalling any other drivers.

    1. i would suggest using power saver with lower brightness. also make sure that bluetooth and wifi arent running at the same time, the signals will not only conflict, but you will be using extra power. i also suggest to download dox's 185.68 drivers which downclock the gpu thus not only keeping it cooler, but saving battery power

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=23676

the drivers also provide the best performance i have seen so far. (ive gotten my highest 3dmark 06 score of 8786 with these)

and also try using rightmark http://cpu.rightmark.org/download/rmclock_235_bin.exe to lower the voltage of the cpu not only keeping it cooler, but using less power as well. all of these tweaks will add another 15-20min of battery life.

    2. make sure that you have the latest windows updates and that media player is updated as well. perhaps the video drivers will correct the problem.

    3. i would suggest reinstalling the drivers for the touchpad. perhaps even purchasing a new keyboard.

Toshiba released BIOS 1.60 for everyone with an PQX31U (x305-Q706) or PQX31E a couple of days ago.

Nvidia also released GeForce 185.81 for notebooks (XP, Vista, and Windows 7 32/64 bit). To Find the Nvidia drivers, go to the beta drivers section of the Nvidia website. The 706/708 aren't officially supported.

Hopefully these updates will help with some problems.

New nvidia beta gave me an increase of 230 points on default FurMark bench - 10% iprovement. Haven't had time to run 3dm06 yet but it looks good. They also have powermizer working in this driver.

To 9800m GTX users : do you have stable temperatures when running furmark stability test?

I have this annoying issue that temps go sky high like above 100C, despite the fact a toshiba techie changed the thermal paste, the keyboard still gets very hot. Im guessing he still put on too much and its acting like an insulator.

Im thinking Im gonna have to open the bucket myself to get it sorted now, I hate how this laptop is like a DIY project ffs, I already had to fix the keyboard flex myself!!!

Whats funny is that Idle temps are 40C, I just cant get it past my head how a fan dedicated to a single gpu cannot keep it cool under load.

    seriously that is too high!
My max temp is 95 C but that was with overclock and 2-3 hours for GTA IV. My max temp today is 85 C :D.
I have not changed termal paste or something. Just make sure your fans are clean...

Keyboard flex is not a big problem here :/...

    Cheers.

Hm I guess you are lucky, or there's something seriously wrong with the EU version of this laptop. Yeah ill clean the fans but I dont think that is the problem, since my x9100 never goes above 79C after running Orthos for 30 mins ? I find it hard to believe only one of the fans is clogged up...

Im from the UK and the laptop version is the x300-11w.

I guess that if cleaning the fans and properly applying some MX-2 doesnt fix the problem it must be a defective fan or something ? In that case Ill send it for repairs so they replace the heatsinks and hopefully that fixes it. Otherwise Ill be demanding my refund, good thing I got extended warranty for this thing.
