Im an animation student and lost of 3d work, aw well as playing games to pass time. i have owned a x300-11s since it first came out. My warranty is up in a few days, so im going to upgrade. Finally read all 180 pages... yeah blue peter badge lol
Im currently have a P8600 and wanting to upgrade to a T9990. Im on a budget (student loan), so would this give me a performance increase.... with my current cpu it take about 1 mins+ just to load the application (maya). Im not planning to overclock so the t9990 would be better rather than the x9100
Im aware that i need to upgrade my HD... would one 500 gb @ 7200 rpm be better than a 320 @ 5400 rpm + 200 @ 7200 . I cant afford SSD
I have a 320 @ 5400 so was wounder was it worth buying a second or replacing and getting one drive.
I have looked at the dissembling pictures and still dont have a clue. Could someone make a video, i feel that im not the only person and this would help others. Im not up for parting my cash and giving it to the fat cats at PC WORLD (UK).
I have looked on youtube, there is no how to upgrade your cpu for the x300/305. Im aware that it's at my own risk
Thanks in advance

To change HDD isin't so hard. But you must be carefull when you change your CPU.
I think that your HDD is the first part you should change. I used Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 7200 RPM and it is the best (and fastest) HDD I never had. (Got a SSD now)
Do you use your Qosmio on battery ?
If you do, your battery will drain empty faster. Upgrade to 7200 RPM HDD and P from T CPU will effect the power use... The power use of cpu is only on full speed btw. the T processores use more power then P at full clock...
Here is link to HDD btw: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=477 -
Thanks for the link, i guess it's better to get one hard drive rather than two. I rarely use battery, since im always plugged in, unlike im at the pub lol.
Do you think the SG 500gb at 7200 is worth buying
Edit: This is my first laptop ever... i have years of experience with desktop. The video which i was requesting was to change the cpu, since i hear it's tricky. Also when i know how to open it it, i can clean it out. It has not been open since i bought it back in sept 2008 -
If you get one harddrive you will save some heat. That is good if you know something about computers but laptop and destkop's are diffrent. You need compleatly to open your qosmio if you want to change your CPU. Also you can re-apply thermal paste
That will save you some 3-5 C
Let me know the result
Bro btw, got some links to benchmarks here:
Western Digital Scorpio Black: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/955/6/
And
Seagate 500GB: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/967/5/ -
Thanks for you link mate. But I'm not buying anything from HP! Also I know that my ram's will downclock if it can't handle it but it is not worth for me then. Becouse there is still no 4GB 1333Mhz modules. But I can find 4GB 1066Mhz.
Also what is diffrence between OEM and engineering samples -
Hi guys,
I picked up a X300-13W refurb for a lovely price (half the RRP in my country) so wish me luck, not really sure what to expect, and a little hesitant buying a refurb machine.
I'll read through this thread while im waiting for the machine to be delivered (will probably take me a few weeks to read it all
), but any brief advice or words of caution for me? Is it a good machine, reliable etc?
-
Welcome
What is your specs. ?
Is this right ?
This was the model, I was going to buy but it I was not able to find any companies wich had it in store. And weeks later they told me the model no longer was available.
But a little bit overclock for your GPU and you will get very good results. Your CPU is strong the best one you today can get. I'm maybe going to upgrade mine too... -
Yep, that looks about right, it is a UK model. It was the QX9300 that made me decide to go for it.
I know the 9800M GTS is not super-strong (compared to the higher models) but I am only a casual gamer so I expect to be happy with it. -
Do you know wich chipset this model have ?
Intel or nForce/nVidia ? -
I don't have it yet, so all I know is the spec above.
-
lol thats true. I hope to see some benchmarks from you when you got it
Realy wondring how good QX9300 does the job
-
It has the Nvidia chipset--it is the same spec as the X305-Q708 model except without 128gb ssd, home premium instead of ultimate.
-
Lucky you v_c
And thanks for the information sgilmore62
-
I ordered a 4gb set of 1333 ram on newegg today for $78. Planning on swapping out one of the 2gb modules for a 4gb stick later, cost is $329 for a total of 6gb.
-
So you are also going to try 1333 Mhz modules ?
But try first without one 2GB 1066Mhz. Maybe they work at 1333Mhz
If you want to give it a try... -
i have 1333mhz ram, they work at 1066 :s
-
Okay, it is limited then. No point to get 1333Mhz for me then. I can live with my 4GBs at 1066Mhz, I want big upgrades like QX9300
-
So I guess I should cancel my order...
-
So does that mean the up-to-date drivers on Nvidias page work fine? I heard some people had been having problems getting drivers for Hybrid-power notebooks, but maybe that was just Intel chipsets im thinking of..
-
Yes, the 186.81 drivers from Nvidias site install just fine. You can overclock that qx9300 with Nvidia system tools too!
-
Sweet, thanks for the info
-
Don't know bro, it is up to you...
That was what I meant with
-
Thanks for the links looks like ill get the seagate. Im so tempted to open my laptop up to clean it out, but im still doubtful. The reason being is that i wanted someone to make like a video guide on how to open it up, and the parts which you need to be careful with.
-
Understand, I don't think you can find video for qosmio. But you be carefull with all type of cables and parts
You don't need to open it to clean? Just blow some air into fans
Like I do, and change of HDD is easy...
And Yes, be carefull, it is not easy to open Qosmio series... -
What would happen to this machine (the one with 9800M GTS SLI and 9400 integrated) if the 9800M cards died? Would it still be able to boot up and run normally using the 9400M?
-
lol what a question v_c
I have no idea
-
Thanks for trying. It seems like it would be nice if it was possible, just as an emergency/backup measure. Does anybody else have a guess?
Anyway, they accepted payment for my laptop today and they say it will be dispatched today also. So hopefully I will have it before the end of the week. Although it is being shipped overseas so maybe early next week is more realistic
. Fingers crossed everything is OK!
-
I got also my fingers crossed for you, my friend.
-
Yes, running on powersaver mode turns off the discrete graphics, so I don't know why it wouldn't work. If you like your fans to run on high all the time you can run a game on high performance then switch to powersaver mode and the fans will run on high until you reboot or switch back to performance. I think it's a bug but pretty nice if you like the fans running on high. When I use that trick my cpu idles @30C and the mobo @34 hdd@30C even with overclock.
-
Guys lot of win7 drivers posted on toshiba support website check it out!
-
I'm going to check it out, thank you Thanatospy
EDIT: The norwegian site does not have any Windows7 driver. And UK dosn't have my model listed. -
I seemed to have trashed some of the NForce mobo drivers while uninstalling some Nvidia pieces. Where do I find the drivers for the Nforce mobo for Q706? I swear they used to be on Toshiba site but they have cleaned up the driver pages.
I have a suspect CoProcessor and SM Bus Controller. I tried scanning \Windows\System32\ and it finds a driver but it hates it. -
has anyone tried the new BIOS, what does it do?
-
no update for the 13o
-
new bios were?
-
Got my X300-13W today. Dead on arrival. All the lights come on, makes a few noises, nothing on the screen.
Goddam it -
wuuttt!
But you get new one or what ? Nothing on the screen ? Try to startup without battery. This problem can have many reason(s)... -
Screen is dead or GPU is dead. Nothing at all, no post screen, not even a flicker. Havent a monitor to check, but don't care, just want this thing gone and my money back... I am soo disappointed right now, and I predict the seller is going to be a nightmare to deal with
-
Ah, I hope evrything is going to bee fine with you. I'm never going to buy Toshiba again!
My nightmare started about 1 year ago (2-3 months left)! -
take the harddrive door off and make sure the hdds are plugged in all the way.
-
But he says that there is no live on his screen. So I don't think it is the harddrive(s). And maybe the seller makes trouble when he get it back...
-
Yeah, checked that. And tried a liveCD. Nothing, not even getting a flicker on the screen, gotta be a gpu/display issue.
Thanks -

Hi i have a query aboutthe CPU. I have the X305-Q706 and looking to upgrade to QX9300 but reading through this thread i think it mentions somewhere that the multiplier is disabled in BIOS so you cant overcock via the multiplier. Is this true for me even though i have the nvidia chipset? Thx
-
you can overclock with Nvidia System Tools via raising the fsb not multiplier because yes it is locked in BIOS.
-
Hi
Thx for the info, thats a pity really, think ill just go for the X9100 then -
I'm having problems with my getting an output on hdtv using hdmi with qosmio x305-q701.
When I plug in the hdmi cable the laptop screen just goes black and there is no output on my tv, the only way to get out of it is to do a hard shutdown.
It seems when i update my nvidia drivers then it stops working. When i revert back to toshiba drivers it works again.
I've tried every driver i could imagine from laptopvideo2go and to no avail.
Has anyone found a fix to this problem cause it's a pain for me to stick to old drivers which gives me bad stutters in games when the new drivers fix all that. -
I had a bum unit shipped to me 1st time round. I thought nothing was on the screen, then I noticed that it was the backlight not working. Seriously, the screen was BLACK. Shone a flashlight on it, and it was barely readable. Maybe an inverter issue. Nonetheless, got a replacement unit. Tim
-
Thanks. Mine was a refurb, the only one in stock at the moment, so i'll be hoping for a refund rather than replacement. Really bummed, cos it was great value.
-
Do you have HDMI enabled in BIOS and are you using Nvidia control panel for multiple monitors settings?
