I'm using Exile 1975's method of installing the latest desktop drivers.
    post#1075 http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=306522&page=108

As far as overclocking--yes, you can overclock CPU, GPU and memory using Nvidia system tools.

What are your numbers set to for overclocking the GPU and memory? As far as the type of memory you have, is it still stock?

    Thanks!

I don't overclock the GPU's for gaming only benchmarking to see what the highest scores it can get. I go for about a 14% across the board, 304mhz bus for 14% CPU, Ram overclock and 700/899/1750 for the 9800m gts's. I dont mess with memory timings, just FSB.

Yes, it's the 7-7-7-20 1066mhz Hynix memory that came with the computer. I tried 1333mhz ram but it was slower, the timings were 9-9-9-24 I am thinking of either getting a 4gb stick of 7-7-7-20 to make 6gb total or going for faster 2x2gb Kingston HyperX 5-5-5-15 1066mhz ram.

hi again, i might change my directions for driver inf modding.

    first find:

    [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.0]

    and paste this:

    %NVIDIA_DEV.0628.01% = Section004, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0628
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0862.01% = Section004, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0862

then find this in section 4:

    HKLM,"Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Hybrid",AddDeviceSequence,%REG_DWORD%,1

    and paste this after it:

    HKLM,"Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Hybrid",HybridPlatformRole,%REG_DWORD%,0
    HKLM,"Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Hybrid",WhiteList,%REG_SZ%,"msnmsgr.exe,Yahoomessenger.exe,PDVDDXSrv.exe,PDVDCinService.exe,PDVDOnService.exe,FAService.exe,WebCamDell.exe,DellVideoChat.exe,AlienwareAlienFXController.exe,AlienFusionController.exe"
    HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvlddmkm",BacklightControlPolicy,%REG_DWORD%,1
    HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvlddmkm",EnableHybridMode,%REG_DWORD%,1
    HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvlddmkm",MaxHybridSurfSize,%REG_DWORD%,0x1000000
    HKR,,PerfLevelSrc,%REG_DWORD%,0x3333

    then go way down to:

    [Strings]

    and paste:
    NVIDIA_DEV.0628.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS "
    NVIDIA_DEV.0862.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G"

the lines for section 4 give the little hybrid mode tool in the tray to switch on the fly without haveing to change powerplans. hope this helps people.

    Why did you say "might?"

Are there any issues related to this new feature?

By the way Exile, what is your configuration numbers for overclocking you GPU? Do you run games with it overclock or do you just overclock to see how far you can push those 2 9800m GTS?

the higest stable i can get is

    CPU 2550MHz

    GPU 720/950/1750

also changeing the mem settings to tras=18, trcd=6, trp=6, trc=24

some games i run oced, others not, depends on the games i wanna play, lately i havent wanted to oc it so i dont even have ntune installed

right now using driver version 191/07, slightly lower 3dmark06 score the previous, but higher vantage than the last few, and more fluid in games like fallout 3

only reason for might is that it isnt esential, only if you want that feature, been using it since helping dox test his pre 185.85 release

shader and core are related, the 9800m gts has a higher core than the 9800m gtx i guess, so the shaders also go much higher, around a 2.5 ratio normally

    my default is 600/799/1500

Will someone help me out with this? As Exile was saying, the 1gb of memory on the 9800m GTX preforms better than 2 9800m GTS. I also read some where else where a single 9800m GTS 1gb out preformed 2 9800m GTS 512mb. How is this possible and why have 2 if 1 is better?

You would think that there would be a way to combine both 9800m GTS 512mb together to have 1gb but this is not the case. So what happens to the extra 512mb if our laptops in SLI only use one of the 512mb?

I hear people say that running SLI splits up the work load on games and stuff and helps the computer/laptop to run smoother and faster. I am confused. Are 2 9800m GTS 512mg faster than one 9800m GTS with 1gb? Does having 1gb mean you can run game at higher frame rates and higher resolutions?

Thanks guys for all of this info. This forum is OFF THE HOOK!!

So using 191.07 is the best for demanding games, correct? If I go with this what will I need to change in order for the SLI to work properly? Any customizing like you did with the 185.85?

I'm just trying to get the best performance possible from my Q706. I want to be able to run games like Crysis, Grid, Bioshock and Mass Effect all maxed out. Is this possible with the SLI 9800m GTS using 197.07 or 185.85?

I get my laptop in 2 days and I want to be ready for maximum gaming performance.

ok, as far as the sli goes, when using 2 cards in sli both cards contain the same data to process, so both cards have their memory filled with the same instructions. so instead of them being added together they work alternately (this is a very simplified explanation btw). the reason the card with less speed can outperform is because it has more shaders/ streams (a bigger pipeline for the data to transfer through). the 1gb mem versus my 512mb allows it to run at better quality textures. i can play gta 4 pretty damn nicely, but only at med texture detail. the 1 gb cards have enough mem to run at high, with the other settings similar to mine. looking at 3dmark scores i can beat tunays score with only my cpu oc'ed, to 2.5 vs his 2.8, so i dont really think his single card does outperform my sli.

as for changeing the driver infs, the instructions should work for most drivers since 181.xx. you might have to change the section that all installs from tho. depends on the driver. drivers with this inf: NV_DISP.INF should all be from section 4 tho.

so once you overclock your cpu to 2.5 you can play gta4 on high like a 1gb card can? Bare with me. I'm just trying to learn from you pros!

I guess I had a distorted understanding of what SLI does. I thought I would be able to whip up on Crysis on max settings! Why do I have to be such a noob?! Maybe if I overclock my gpu and cpu without burning them up??

Can someone shoot me a good link where I can read upon how to overclock a gpu and a cpu for laptops?

As far as drivers go, I'm just going to go with the 185.85 with your tweaks.

Thanks Exile for all of your info. You are a big help!

I found this website. Are these good instructions?

    http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-general/112-guide-overclocking-your-gpu.html

I also looked at few videos on youtube but they were saying that for SLI one of the video cards must be removed for proper overclocking.

He was saying that you must overclock each one to see how far each one can be overclock and which ever one has the lowest overclock that is the numbers that both graphic cards should use in SLI.

But I am sure this must be different for laptops.

get nvidia system tools from http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.05.html to oc the graphics and cpu, unless you got a model other than the 706/708 in which case you can only oc the graphics card. look on laptopvideo2go.com for advice on oc'ing as well as graphics driver updates. right now i would recomend the 191.03 drivers. i am using the 191.07 and they are kinda buggy. always tho try to use the most recent drivers to avoid issues with new games/programs/hardware. the page from the post on the last page is very outdated and most of the referenced programs wont work with vista.

as for games i can benchmark crysis at:

    Run #1- DX9 1680x1050 AA=No AA, 64 bit test, Quality: Low ~~ Last Average FPS: 60.22
    Run #2- DX9 1680x1050 AA=No AA, 64 bit test, Quality: Medium ~~ Last Average FPS: 39.42
    Run #3- DX9 1680x1050 AA=No AA, 64 bit test, Quality: High ~~ Last Average FPS: 30.83

    Run #2- DX10 1680x1050 AA=No AA, 64 bit test, Quality: VeryHigh ~~ Overall Average FPS: 19.435
    Run #3- DX10 1680x1050 AA=No AA, 64 bit test, Quality: High ~~ Overall Average FPS: 28.6

No modified version so that SLI can work properly like the 185.85 that Dox did?

Hey philfree37, did you get your 706? The latest drivers from Toshiba will work fine for SLI and so will the latest notebook drivers from Nvidia. If you want to experiment with desktop drivers use Exile1975's instructions.

when you look at the 191.03 you see all of the types of games that have been added to play SLI in. Why can't Nvidia be fair and hook us mobile boyz up?!

Just look at what they have:

    * Up to 12% performance increase in ARMA 2
    * Up to 8% performance increase in Batman: Arkham Asylum with GPU PhysX enabled
    * Up to 50% performance increase in Call of Juarez: Blood in Bound with SLI enabled
    * Up to 14% performance increase in Fallout 3 (indoor scenes) with antialiasing enabled
    * Up to 10% performance increase in Far Cry 2 (DX9 version) with antialiasing enabled
    * Up to 34% performance increase in Prototype with antialiasing enabled

    # Adds SLI support for Darkfall, Dawn of Magic 2: Time of Shadows, Dreamkiller, Fuel, Majesty 2: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim, Need for Speed: Shift and more.

That's a lot! They have freakin Shift added!!

On Nvidia's website this is what it said about the 186.81

The following notebooks are not supported in this release:

    1. Hybrid Power notebooks with Intel chipsets such as:
    * Acer Aspire 7530
    * BenQ Joybook S42
    * Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi 3650
    2. Fujitsu notebooks – (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks). Note: Fujitsu Siemens (FSC) notebooks are supported in this release
    3. Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
    4. Sony VAIO notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
    5. Any notebook that is launched after the release date of this driver

Doesn't this mean that this driver doesn't work with the Q706?

No because the X305-Q706 and 708 have Nvidia chipset not Intel--those drivers will install fine on your Q706. Make sure to download drivers saving to desktop and uninstall Nvidia display drivers in programs and features. You may have to reboot twice to complete the uninstall because of the 9400m integrated gpu.

are you still on the original 176.49 drivers? Go into Nvidia control panel and change flat panel scaling to use Nvidia scaling I think. If you update to the newer drivers it wont be an issue.

Thanks, the new driver got the 3dmark going BUT every time I am in the middle of running the vantage or the 3dmark06 the screen goes black and I have to reboot?

Any ideas on what's going on?

Go to Nvidia control panel and accept license agreement then, "accept licence agreement" will become "device settings" :D

If you are not overclocking and are having FAIL's running benchmarks then I have no idea what the problem is--it could be anything.
