But is the touchpanel drivers that important if you're only going to play your old games on it?

It is not that important! I was just wondering if anyone out there found a solution! Furthermore fn keys dont work so cannot increase or decrease brightness. Thats the only problems till now..

Hello people. When using the sli on my laptop I get random black screens. I have come accross the following post:
    Hi!

I have gone through the same problem (on multiple games including SC2, MW2, ArmaII, etc) and i believe i am familiar with it.

Qosmio crashing during games (even freecell) with a black screen and loopy sound from the speakers. Solved only with a hard reset. Problem does not happen if you are running off the battery.

I believe i might have a solution. I have seen the problem crop up across the board on all Qosmio laptops (including my own X300) and i eventually did quite a lot of research and found out a solution.

The problem really pertains to fixing the clock frequencies between the GPU and the CPU and that caused all the problems. They apparently loose sync with each other at variable speeds due to a bug in the power management.

The detailed explanation and solution are on http://www.fixmyqosmio.com and you can check out the writeup there.

It worked for me and it has worked for over 100 other people who have liked it and used it. !!Warning!! it is a COMMERCIAL solution (although it has a 100% refund guarantee) so dont go to the site unless you want to.

I am not soliciting for business. just letting you know that there IS a way to solve the problem and Toshiba are either not concerned or unable to solve the problem. Please dont make the mistake that i made (taking my out of warranty laptop to toshiba) and paying for servicing it.

The service center cant help as it just DOES NOT KNOW how to solve the problem. They service it and hope for the best.

    Hope that was some help

    LordNOD

The problem is that the website no longer works. Does anyone know the fix for this? Thanks in advance!

doesn't riva tuner fix this as well you just need to force the power level? or what ever it is?

How do I do that? I have used rivatuner only on my desktop for overclocking. Furthermore I didnt find a rivatuner that works with 258.96 drivers of nvidia..

That site "http://www.fixmyqosmio.com" was a scam site. I am a user mod at the Toshiba forum in the US, and we have had to remove his posts several times in the past.

"1. Download the latest version of RivaTuner here: RivaTuner

    2. Install RivaTuner and Run the program.

    3. In the Main tab, click on the arrow next to Customize under Driver Settings to bring up more options then click System Settings (the first Icon)

    4. In the Overclocking tab, where it says "Force constant performance level" select performance 3D.

    5. Click apply, and reboot the system when prompted.

If for some reason the "Force constant performance level" drop-down is grayed out you will need to go to the "Power users" tab in the initial RivaTuner window. Then click on the "+" next to "RivaTuner \ NVIDIA \ Overclocking". Look for "EnablePerfLevelForcing" and under Value type 1. Click apply, this should allow you to modify "Force constant performance level." Finally, follow steps 3-5 above."

Thanks but I have tried this before. Rivatuner does not find the correct core memory and shader speed so when the force constant max 3d performance setting is on it actually underclocks my 9800m gts sli config. So I get less fps from 2 9800m gts rather than disabling one in 3d manage settings when playing certain games that I came accross with problems such as black lines and black screen. I now believe that it is something to do with the power saving settings. Only if I knew how to fix it..

Ah thats right you had the solution for my sisters computer, man that sucks.
you'd think that would be one of the things that they fixed when they were doing the bios updates seeing as so many people seem to have this problem

I have the european version. Qosmio x300-14x which was available in germany and egypt. This has the nforce 730 motherboard dual 9800m gts sli +9400m g onboard plus an x9100 (3,06ghz) 1680x1050 screen resolution and 4gb ddr 1066mhz ram.

Now to my problem. I have posted this in another forum but since I believe that there are people who can help me here I would like to repost it.

Hello! I have used a mod for the nvidia drivers to keep them at their max setting since the black lines are seen by alienware m17x r1 users and was due to the gpu's underclocking automatically. What I have come accross is that although one 9800m gts runs at 1,1v and 9400m g at 1,01 the 2nd 9800m gts runs at 0,9-1,1v . This shows that it is automatically underclocking. That is what causes the problems in the games. My problem now is how to change it to max performance setting. Is there anyone out there who knows? Is there any way to mod the bios so that it doesn't throttle our gpus? Both 9800m GTS run at 65C max which is not too hot. Although of the temperature the 2nd 9800m gts throttles down causing the black screen or lines in games. When the 2nd 9800m gts is disabled in nvidia control panel through manage 3d settings the games run fine since the 1st 9800m gts does not throttle down. When the computer runs on battery both gpus are throttled down automaticcaly and thus there are no problems with the sli config (eg sc2 doesnt black screen or show black lines) since it doesnt throttle down because of the lower clock speeds. I now know the problem but cannot fix it. Does anyone know of a program to mod the bios so that the 2nd 9800m gts won't throttle down? Playing with a single 9800m gts works fine with no problems but if I wanted a single gpu laptop I would have gone with the 9800m gtx or with the alienware m17x with 260m gtx which was in the same price tag. I am totally pissed off with my selection to toshiba over dell. I will never buy an sli laptop again and never buy from toshiba. They should have fixed their gpu problems in their bios updates but they have done nothing. Thanks in advance!

P.S my gpus are running at their default clock speeds so they shouldn't throttle down when gaming. As I said above my temps are not high enough to enable the throttle. Voltage and clocks measured by gpuz. I hope that someone out there knows a method to fix it.

On page 121 I saw this post:

    185.85 from Dox + modded bios 1.60.

The main purpose of modifing bios was getting sli to work.
When i've received X300 it was extremely slow... only 5200pt in 3dm06 - which is slower than 9600M GT GDDR3 . I was wondering why... After some research i saw that second 9800M GTS is not working!!! The first 9800M GTS was working in SLI with... yeah 9400M . I still don't know how it is possible. A three weeks ago my friend also bought that notebook and now i'm working with him to get this SLI run extremely fast, like it should be.
New bios is working fine, but sometimes it hangs the os. Propably it is a problem with nvidia driver which thinks that the first device is 9400M. Hmm, we are still working on it.

    Main changes in modified bios:
    * Updated vbios of gpus to the newest from nvidia
    * Changed vbios settings:
    - GF 9400M is no more master device - now it is slave
    - first and second GF 9800M GTS are master devices
    - some small tweaks about memory management
    * Nvidia tools recognize SLI in X300

Is there anyone who can explain to me step by step how to change these bios settings? Thanks in advance.

Hello again! I have managed to set our 9800m gts sli to run on their max setting without throttling but the sc2 issue was not solved. So I don't believe any more that it has something to do with the gpu utilization. I have changed the set affinity to only 1 of my 2 cores (x9100 is a dual core) and the magic was done! I have no black lines or stuttering. This made me lose 8-10fps but at least I get more fps than a sigle gpu and no problems. Everything is on ultra. So I don't really know why when our 9800m gts sli is in single mode works fine with 2 cores using the game and when dual gpu is enable u need to set affinity to 1 core. Maybe my x9100 is not good enough to run both 9800m gts and the game? That is something I cannot answer. What I would like to know is if any of you have the qx9300 which is more powerful and have similar problems as me! If there are no problems with the qx9300 then I suppose it is my cpu that is limiting my gpu setup and I will upgrade it!

Well the thing is if the x9100 is limiting my dual 9800m gts then why when I disable the 1 core from the game I dont have any problems? I believe that the problem doesn't arise because the 1 core limits the dual 9800m gts. When the 2nd core is enabled then there is no limit and something goes wrong with the memory of the gpus and so I have the black lines stuttering and black screen. I believe that toshiba has done some bad job with the memory of the gpu's. Anyway I am open to suggestions. I have now disabled the sli for sc2 because its too boring to have to set affinity everytime I start the game.

Btw I have been watching gpuz and my 9800m gts never goes more than 20% load on memory whereas my system ram (ddr3 :p) goes up to 3gb use. When using sli one of the cards stay at 0% load on memory. So I think something goes wrong with the memory. Instead of the memory being written on the vram it actually goes on the ram. And when my ram gets full it starts getting ram from hdd and theres where the black lines come and at a point a black screen. Thats at least what I believe. I cannot believe that using ultra in textures which blizzard reccomends 1gb of vram it only uses 20% of one of my 9800m gts which is 512mb. Furthermore I used the high setting for textures where blizzard reccomends 512mb vram and same problem. I am currently testing it on medium which blizzard reccomends 256mb vram and my system has not crashed yet unde sli config. Anyone knows of this memory issue and how to fix it?

Well I dont know how to disable it!

From my research u cannot disable turbocache memory in windows vista and 7. It was only possible in windows xp. No u have to disable it through bios and since qosmio x300 does not have the setting in its bios u cannot disable turbocache. For now I will just set it to single gpu. I still receive 25-40fps with a single 9800m gts (with the sli I had most of the time 50-60fps but I had the black screens and black spikes coming in here and there). All other games that are sli compatible dont have any problems at all! So I suppose it is just sc2 that has issue with my sli setup.

Hello! I noticed that u now have an alienware m17x r2. Do you have any problems with it? I went to a shop in my country and saw it. I didn't have my qosmio x300 to compare it but it seemed huge. It seems bigger than qosmio x300. I haven't heard any good comments on the r1 version (stuttering and driver issues) so I would like to know if u have any issues with it. I consider buying it but I would probably go with a cross fire config. The manager at the shop told me that he can order me one with dual gtx 480m but I had bad experience with sli in laptops (qosmio x300) so I don't know what is better. Furthermore I might go with a single gtx 480 (limit my problems... ). Is it worthy to sell my qosmio x300 and buy an alienware m17x r2? (since u were an owner of the qosmio x300 u can compare them and tell me honestly what u thing!) Thanks in advance!!

After disabling page file when running sc2 I run out of memory.. My pc restarted once and the other times windows came with messages of low memory.. So does that mean that my gpus are using ram instead of their own memory or does it mean that sc2 requires more than 4gb ram? Thanks in advance!

That means your GPU is using RAM as memory. This happend to me also with my 9800M GTX. But with my GT 320M GTA IV does not use more ten 1.4GB RAM.

However, this can also slow down your performance as PageFile will not be fast as your GPU memory.

Core 2 Quad Q9100 upgrade? What are the upgrade options for us on the X305/300 beyond the Q9100 besides the Extreme Quad QX9300? And is the QX9300 really worth the extra money if already on a Q9100 at 2.26 only going to 2.53? Also if for mainly A/V editing encoding, is it better to stay with the quad at slightly lower clock then a dual core at higher clock? For example, a Core 2 Dual T9900 @ 3.06 compared to my Q9100 @ 2.26GHz?

Also, I see many people using imac E8xxx (ie: E8335 or E8345) CPU's but I only see Core 2 Duals. Any Core 2 Quad imacs we can use CPU from?

I realise we never had an official Blue-Ray reader ut I want to get input on anybody using a Blue-Ray drive from any oher notbook and if so what models so we can look into it? I realize we will need to change the faceplate to fit but who cares.

What are you folks using for notebook cooling during heavy gaming or media encoding? Brands, trpes etc? Any cool snap on modded ideas to suck out more heated air out the back for example?

    I have no idea...

For some reasons, I've like Quad-Cores much better then Dual-cores. I think that you'll get better performance with the Quad core, and you can unlock multiplier which gives you a great rom for overclocking.
Even if the software you use don't support 4 cores, you can think like the windows will take 1 of the cores to run smootly and use 2 other cores full for the program you're running. When I render videos on my T9600 (laptop in my sig) my computer is not useable at all. Takes my both cores and use them all. I belive that a Quad core would give me much better results.
I do not like coolers and belive that a laptop should handle it's own heat at it's own.

Well I am using an x9100 which is dualcore at 3,06ghz and can overclock up to 4ghz. It is quite okay but I am considering the qx9300 since I had better results with my desktop which uses a quad core. I do video editing as well so it depends when a lower clocked quad is better. If ur video editing program utilises 4 cores (which most of them nowadays do) then you will see increase. About blu ray I had a friend that baught a blu ray writer through ebay and worked. Don't know the model though. Under video editing and gaming I use nzxt lx cryo cooler. My laptop does not really need it as it stays up to cpu 70c and gpu 80c but when using that cooler I have most of the times a 10c drop which is a good thing. The cooler the laptop is the more lifespan it will have.

Are we limited to the nVidia 9 series GPU's or can we trade out later for a Toshiba pulled nVidia GTX 2,3,or 4x series Like a GTX-330 from a Qosmio T780?

Also, What WIMAX / Wi-Fi PCI-E card upgrades are out there for use in this model with any improvement. I currently have the Intel® WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350

I have not seen anyone trying it but the intel base qosmio x300 might be able to take the gtx 2 ,3 or 4x series since the gpu size would be the same. The problem is, does the bios allow it? I have a qosmio x300 with nvidia chipset and would love to move to a gtx 460m which has the same power consumptions as my dual 9800m gts but they are different shaped and I dont know if my motherboard will support. The only sure way is to try it urself (if u have the spare cash).

Hello people. I have installed nvidia inspector. I see that my 9800m GTS SLI don't use their own memory. Memory usage is grayed out and for 9400m g is enabled (which gets from my ram). I have even installed the 186.42 driver from toshiba and I still have the same problem. Does anyone with the dual 9800m gts know how to fix it ? THanks in advance!

I have been watching my temps playing sc2 in sli mode. I can see my 9400m G reporting as high as 77-80c . I suppose since I use the dual 9800m GTS this sensor is the motherboards temp. My cpu stays at 70c and 9800m both at 65c. So is it high 80c for the nforce 730i? If yes is it a reason for the random black screens when playing sc2 in sli mode? Would really like any opinions.

1,4GB is almost notmal for a not optimized OS. My Ailianware M11x is currently running out of box, without a clean install at 1.39GB idle.

So it seems that sc2 needs more than 4gb of ram if u want to run it on ultra. Moreover even when the pagefile is turned off I still get black lines (flickers) from here to there when sli is enabled. I have not seen any other game having this problem on my x300 though. When I was monitoring the fps with evga precision tool and they would not decrease at all (stable 35-60) so the random black lines make no sense. I checked everything and it seems that it is not possible to fix it. My cpu and gpu dont throttle, turned page file off so it is not the page file, really dont know what else to try...

I might be interested in upgrading my GPU if I keep this X305 another year as my travel PC. I have the stock nVidia 9700M GTS so is the 9800M GTX really a big upgrade if I use mostly for Adobe CS5 video and photo editing under Windows 7 Enterprise x64? I also use this for travel so I use as a business presentation outputed to projection screen@ 720 and or 1080P LCD office monitors.

Anybody using dual 4G ram in these X300/X305's (8G dual channel) Whats the best timings we see if so on these? I see Mushkin DDR3 1333 @ 7-7-7-20 so far.

Hello people. I was playing call of duty modern warfare 2 everything on and the textures on extreme. I got 80-90fps. Is that good? Thanks in advance.

Can somebody with a factory quad core install let me know if the heatsink is any bigger or better peformance then the ones used for dual core units? Also, is the optional 2nd fan the exact mounting as single cooling fan to mount in empty spot or do we need to mod?

The heatsinks are exactly the same on both. If you look up the part number for them, they are the same on dual core and quad core.
    45 watt heatsink

Ja, it has the 2nd slot for fan, that's why I was curious. I found an OEM CPU/GPU fan so I will try and see if it bolts up the ame or if I have to mod a mount.

RAM question? Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX (2x4G)? These support XMP for lower timings of 5-5-5-15 @ 1066 but are Jedec spec'd at 9-9-9-24/1333 (7-7-7-20/1066). So I ask, is thee any windows app to let us exploit the XMP (profile) timings programed in since our laptops don't do XMP in BIOS?

As far as Jdec spec'd RAM, which brands stand to good stability, lower heat, or room to OC from brands like Mushkin, Geil, G-Skill, Crucial, OCZ?Most these brands are in close price range so who has input on any of these in a 2x4G or 2x2G config to share with other? I use now the Mushkin 2x4's , but my other set is a G-Skill in 2x2G & 2x4G. I liked boh and both offer same 7-7-7-20 @ 1066 while Jedec spec'd 9-9-9-24/1333

It depends which chipset u have. If you have the nvidia mobo then you can change the ram timings with nvidia performance tools. (thats what I do with mine).

Hello! I think I have figured out why sc2 in qosmio x300 9800m GTS SLI config has problems. From notebookcheck I got this quote on 9800m GTS SLI Furthermore, some games may suffer from micro stuttering in the range of 30 fps (because of the different frametimes) When the blacklines appear the framerate is between 30-40fps. So propably thats the problem and it cannot be solved in sli until sc2 supports it (which I dont believe it will). So I will just play it in single gpu mode. 25-45fps in ultra doesn't seem bad anws! As I mentioned on a previous post when I set affinity to 1 core the game runs fine but it is bottleneck by cpu so it stays at 32fps constant. With this observation I supposed that x9100 cannot handle sc2 (which is a cpu intensive game) + the sli configuration and causes the black lines. This can be confirmed only by someone that has a qx9300 and a 9800m GTS SLI system. So its either the one or the other. Any suggestions are welcome!

not really sure about those programs but unless tunay still has his 9800m gtx you could be forking out $1000 for a new 9800m gtx, which to me says not worth it or/and get a new laptop instead

yeh thats pretty good considering i usually have 90fps depending on what going on

Its probably a long shot but I'm just wondering if its a vsync problem (assuming the lines are horizontal that is). whenever you disable a gpu or cpu core you get about 30fps which would suit the refresh rate of the screen. Have you tried enabling/disabling vsync?
Of the 2 problems you suggested I would go with sc2's lack of sli support being the problem, just because a cpu bottle neck would result in limited fps not graphical glitching/problems
