Well I mentioned that when using a single gpu a single 9800m gts then I have no freeze problems although I can see the hdd indicator on.. That's why I need someone who has the dual gpu setup to test and let me know. If it is due to ram I will upgrade it. But since no one is helping me I believe I have to buy the ram and test it for myself.. :/
-
As I said. I belive we got the same problem. My modules arrived today, now I got to go and pick them up. Later today, I can raport the result. If you are not instrested becase I do have single GPU, then you must test it out by your self, as you said.
-
I appreciate ur help!
It's just that I know that a single gpu does work. I don't know about the dual ones since mine freezes. I hope gotmekill will be able to help me out testing his system!
-
Please somebody tell me that I should or should not paging file if I have 8GB of RAM ? Thank you.
-
Ur gpu has 1gb of internal ram which should be more than enough for it to work. Moreover having 8gb of ram u will never need the page file! Either u leave it on or off it makes no difference! I would turn it off If I where u..
-
Something other came up I were not able to pick my sticks up today, however, to answer you, I do have 3GB of RAM now and PageFile turned off. It is actually slowing down your computer (in my case) because it just puts more stress into a HDD which is allready much slower then my CPU etc.
-
Pagefile is only used if the ram is fully loaded!
In his case that won't happen. He has 8gb of ram available. Moreover his gpus has 1gb of dedicated ram so I don't believe turbocache will steal any ram in current games. Having it enabled won't make a change or at least in theory it shouldn't.
-
You said it yourself, in theory, you never know
I strongly suggest you to keep it off
-
Oh, I also want to correct that I meant when you run out of RAM and PageFile actually 'start working'. I did see that was a bit bad writen by me
-
When you increase the total ram in the X300/X305's it automatically increases the amount of ram that is shared with the GPU.
I have 8gb's of ram installed in mine and this shows how much of that has been allocated for use by the GPU.
So you can only count on about 3.5 to 4 gb's of the system ram to be available for use by the system.

Priest-King, as far as a quick google search brings up it seems like BrandonPeet does not have a GPU with TurboCache. You have, I do and judgment do.
Altrough, do not confuse my laptops, I'm not talking about a Qosmio, but the laptop in my signature
What about the PageFile by the way? Does the GPU use pagefile as shared memory? If so, this can make this worse then better. It can slow down your laptop, increase the system heat, and so on. -
TUNAY!
Luckily , I got it.

Thank for you information !
It means that upgrading Ram from 4GB to 8GB doesn't nothing to system right?
As it can be seen in this chart, it is useless to add more Ram because I can get only 4GB maximum in system ram . On the other hand, it's good for Graphic card because I can get more mrmory sharing system on graphic card right? If so, Is it useful to upgrading Ram from 4GB to 8GB ? -
I would say yes. However, you can test this by your self. As I've did Max out any game, any modern game. With PageFile disabled if you get a small poppup that warns you you're out of ram I would upgrade.
I've did this with GTA IV, and it extended my RAM usage over 3.80GB. I've just came home, I've picked up my sticks and as Priest-King said, my 9600M GT got 'his' part of the RAM and only about 6.50GB is usable for my system.
I'm running some benchmarks now, soon finish, I'll play some game and see if the games still crashes without PageFile. -
UPDATE: Crash gone with my new modules
I can now keep PageFile off, even when playing games!!

Hello, I'm another new guy ! Great to find a place to talk about these Toshiba laptops.
I have the older Toshiba X300/4 gig/vista 64/9700 GTS/2.0 processor (I think)
I bought it in early 2009, worked fine for all this time then suddenly it started crashing to black screen, needed hard boot to restart. Also the keyboard always skipped around as I typed. I had bought an extended warranty so today I put it in to be "repaired".
The crash was very random, I thought it was games but no, it did it just on exiting any screen. A button click seemed to "sometimes" set it off.
I used the recovery discs and wiped it. Still happened. Other than that it would run fine, I put it on a Targus cooling stand to see, but I think something was maybe damaged by heat, I dunno.
I have read on the net that many have had this crash/freeze on the X300
Never heard of anyone finding a solution.
I hope they can fix it, I am worried, I really love that machine playing Arma 2 and everything. Was just about to put in 8 Ram, glad I didn't if it cannot be fixed.
Any thoughts or similar experiences.
Thanks for listening.

Hello and Welcome to NBR!
Well, for me actually it does sound like you're GPU is dying, no worry however, it is replaceable
8GB upgrade would be greate for that laptop, also I suggest you to move on to Windows 7 as we have all the drivers working now
Feel free to ask any questions
-
OH Man I hope you're right.
I am worried they would just clean it and add that thermal goo or whatever and call it a day. I hope they witness the crash, but they would see a damaged GPU or test it right ? I hope so.
If the GPU replaced I will upgrade to 8 (help games ?) and Windows 7.
They told me that if it's too much to fix or can't be fixed I would get a replacement, newer model ? Too good to be true.
Thanks for the quick response!
I have been very stressed over this. I miss it already.
I will let you know.
R -
It seems like for me it is your GPU. I do not know, Toshiba does have very very diffrent kind of service in diffrent countries. If you don't mind, where do you live? Upgrading to 8GB will help, PageFile will not be used when you play games this is a good thing. It'll put less stress on your HDD, and even effect your tempratures, in a good way. However, you won't notice that big diffrence in daily use. If you do want a real boost which does matters in real world, buy a SSD drive. Do you remember which CPU (prosesor) model you got?
-
I'm Canadian EH ?
Cheers for the info.
Good to know it "may" be fixable. -
I was looking for the processor info, I know it was a 2.0, it's old. The manual doesn't seem to list it, still reading.
It needs a bunch of upgrades.
but only if it doesn't crash to black. I hate not knowing when. No trust in my machine sucks. -
Cool! Don't forget to keep us updated
-
That is true, however, wait untill you get your laptop back. Then we can together find a good CPU for you
-
Welcome Russ
It defiantly sounds like a graphic card problem, my sisters Qosmio had what seems to be the same problem
It was a problem with switching between graphic power levels
If you get it back and it is still crashing try the following steps
"RIVATUNER
1. Download the latest version of RivaTuner here: RivaTuner
2. Install RivaTuner and Run the program.
3. In the Main tab, click on the arrow next to Customize under Driver Settings to bring up more options then click System Settings (the first Icon)
4. In the Overclocking tab, where it says "Force constant performance level" select performance 3D.
5. Click apply, and reboot the system when prompted.
That has been posted on the Toshiba USA forums as a working fix for that problem.
Apparently the issue is caused by the Nvidia Powermizer feature, and that tool forces the system to use max GPU performance settings only.
Based on all of the positive responses that it got there, I would say that it does work.
If for some reason the "Force constant performance level" drop-down is grayed out you will need to go to the "Power users" tab in the initial RivaTuner window.
Then click on the "+" next to "RivaTuner \ NVIDIA \ Overclocking". Look for "EnablePerfLevelForcing" and under Value type 1. Click apply, this should allow you to
modify "Force constant performance level." Finally, follow steps 3-5 above."
Note: this is not my solution it was given to me by Preist-king -
When they offer a newer model it does not necessarily mean a newer gaming system.
They would most likely offer you something with similar performance, but it will cost less than the X300 cost you new. (Prorated price)
If they do make that offer, I suggest asking if you can add cash to that, and get an X500/X505 instead. (Preferably with the 460M GPU.) -
I will look for my 4GB and test out for you. Any ideas on the thermal pads?
-
I'm also looking for some good thermal pads, but nothing good so far.
-
I believe u can run with 1 of your 4gb ram modules. That won't make any differences with the 2 2gb I believe. Al though if u find ur original will be better as to compare similar things.. Thanks again!

Check out this new 3D technology from Toshiba.

Thanks for the link, but I'm never ever going to buy a Toshiba again
-
Hi, after reinstalling Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 on Toshiba x300, I can not select 4 speakers in the sound control panel . I installed the latest Realtek High Definition Audio Driver R2.34, but the field of speakers configuration is still not active. Who knows how to enable 5.1 sound? Thanks in advance for help.
-
I am using windows 7 ultimate x64 and have never found a way to make that work as in vista.. Still all four speakers work..
-
Actually I have answerd this before, sound was one of few things I did like with that laptop so I found it out. You need to install the Toshiba version of the R1.95 (I think it is) to get it to work, but Vista x64 version and in cmp. mode. Vista x64 service pack 2.
-
I bought a x300 with windows 7 x64 installed by the previous owner, and there was a choice of 4 speakers and a subwoofer, but after some time, came off activation, so I decided to reinstall the operating system. What was the version of the audio driver before, I naturally can not remember.
-
If you do get it to work then please let me know how. I tried so many times with about 5 different driver versions but never succeeded.
-
Guys, I have it working. The very very sad part is, if you first install antoher driver then the one from Toshiba, there is only one way to get it, and it is a clean install. Trust me, I have done soo much research on that drive, one of the reasons why I did not move to Win7 earlier was that driver.
-
I've found a X300-11S for 547 USD, I wonder if I should buy it and bring my beast back to life!
-
As far as I like my laptop I would not advise you to rebuild yours. There are so many issues which make it a not good investment..
-
Yeah not for that much money at least hahah.
-
hahahahh!!
Well, the price, is kinda cheap. But anyways..
I could maybe bulid it up again and sell it? I have a 9800M GTX and bunch of good CPU's laying around here
-
But how much do u think u will be able to sell it for? Mine is an sli version with extreme cpu and still more than year of warranty and I don't think it will sell more than 900euro... If I was to sell it that is..
-
I actually have no idea! But I don't think I'll sell my Qomsio with 9800M GTX. I think I'll keep it as long it lives. Single 9800M GTX does it quite well. I think I'll just leave it connected to my TV. It is able to play Call of Duty Black Ops maxed out at FHD. With a good, play able FPS. I've also love to watch movies, and since I've moved away from my Qosmio, everything else is ok, but I really do miss the sound when I watch movies on the go. Since I do have two diffrent adreseses, I do not bring my TV and my whole system with me each time
-
Well with a single 9800m GTS I can max out the black ops on full hd with good fps... So I have no doubts of the 9800m gtx.. The thing is that I believe that the laptop is worth more than u can sell it for! So better keep it.
-
Yep, that is true. I think I'll get that 11S. If I do so however, I'll have 1 asus gt 320 1gb 8gb RAM. 1 HP (signature). Another hp, 2.2ghz 4gb RAM, some sort of NVIDIA. And 2 x300s. :S
-
LOL! that's insane!! I am struggling on the decision of giving money on buying the 8gb ram as it is a risk if it will make the laptop stable in sli and u have given all this money for different laptops!! If I were u I would sell them keep the qosmio and ur current one and build a desktop!
-
I think so!!
-
Well, actually each has it own job.
My current laptop in signature is my main laptop, I do have all my music and things like on it. I did buy this about 1 or 2 years back? I can't remember, but it was just a laptop laying around which my father used sometimes etc. but now he quit. He got a envy
So This was sadly just sitting in the bag back in a corner so I desided to use it. I felt sorry for it, yeah you've heard right...
The ASUS was my main laptop, now just a backup laptop.
The other laptop with some sort of nVidia GPU is connected to my TV all the time, I have removed LCD and things like that. So it is not 'move able'.
My Qosmio is unusable as well, it does not have a keyboard.
Ah - almost forgot. I've also have a ThinkPad, but it is unusable as well. It was my school laptop with 2.4Ghz CPU and quadro GPU or what that is. However, I dropped it and the CPU fan got out if its spot and was making noice. So I'm using it for parts now, the one antenna I've modded in my main laptop is coming from it. I've also fell over it so LCD is broken
However, I do have another 14.1" 1440x900 LCD
I think I'll sell my main laptop, I mean that in my signature OR my ASUS. Then buy the other Qosmio and have one mobile laptop, for school etc. and another for gaming and weekends
However, I'll have a closer look into it, I just have too much to do at the moment to deal with this problems...
-
One day all those laptops and parts will start breeding, Tunay.
-
Priceless
-
Any of you guys play ARMA or ARMA 2 on your X300 or better ?
Runs pretty darn good.
I love it, missing mine in the shop.
I hope they let me upgrade to the newest one, that 18 inch red X500 it's $1999 in Canada with 8 Ram. Probably the lower of the 2 available, I saw it in store when I dropped off my X300 for repair.
