Seems like I came back late to the threat! I have known for this problem cz I have formated way too many times this machine in order to find the proper drivers.. The trickiest thing for me was making the SLI work! Anws if u need anything else let us know! And yes the qosmio x300 is the best machine I bought up to now. Toshiba's service is not good but hardware wise its very good! It was better than the alienware m17 which was the same release date as the qosmio x300! And the SLI thing bought me into the qosmio instead of alienware. If u forget about the service (which in my opinion is the main thing u have to consider) then the machine is awesome! With the SLI config and the core 2 duo extreme I have I can play sc2 in ultra settings and 1680 x 1050 resolution with stable 40-60fps. I have tried the latest nfs and it works fine! Have tried black ops as well (FPS) and it runs fine! So if u consider its a 3 years old machine and can play recent games then its brilliant!

I just went from Vista Ultimate (64 bit) to 7 professional.

I've installed everything I thought I needed, but my FN key isn't popping up the menu bar at the top like it used to, so I can't toggle my touch pad/change brightness, etc. What do I need from the driver downloads page to make it work?
-edit- Aha, read the post above mine :p I'll try that tomorrow.

Oh, and the realtek audio manager thing, where do I get that?

    Thanks.

I can't remember whether it was for the Value Added Package or some other driver, but the X300 one was out of date on the site, and the way to get around it was to download the driver for a Satellite P500 I think. I can't remember which driver or which laptop it was for but I've saved all my drivers so if you can determine which one you need I can send it to you. Also the American site was quite useful for some drivers. And sometimes it was better to just install the Vista x64 drivers so have a play around with them too.

Hello guys. After a long long time I have located a touchpad and a palmrest with finger print reader for the qosmio x300/305. Here are the links to the ones who are still interested though its a bit expensive. They are brand new and they have international shipping. Here are the links:
Toshiba original upper case - TS21566 - $255.95 US : Notebook Solutions, Parts, Service & Support - x305 upper case for fingerprint scanner models.
    Toshiba original touchpad - TS21569 - $56.95 US : Notebook Solutions, Parts, Service & Support - x305 touchpad

themuddaload about ur fn key problem. 1st make sure that u have the latest bios. When I installed windows 7 on my laptop fn keys were not working until I updated the bios. 2nd thing is the flash cards. I installed the satellite version since I could not find one for the qosmio x300. I remember there are 3 drivers needed to install for the fn keys to work. I am not currently home and cannot check my driver disc that I created in order to install windows 7. If u cannot make it work pm me and I can send u the drivers.

Well I'm not seeing a PM button anywhere, perhaps I don't have a high enough post count or something.

Does anyone know what the latest bios version is? According to SIW, my bios version is 2.1, and the latest I could find on toshiba's site was 1.7.

I got the Fn keys working.

It depends on intel or nvidia motherboard. U can check ur base (under the laptop) what ur code is. pqx31 is the nvidia motherboard pqx32 is the intel. Intel has 2.1 where as nvidia 1.7. Its good that u have fixed the fn keys. If u need any other help let us know.

You can overclock it futher? Well, atleast you have 12mb L2 Cache and basically a real quad core CPU.

Well that sounds strange. The multimedia keys do work in windows 7 after installing the vap (value added package). I had a similar problem and the touch buttons board was burned. It was under warranty though and they replaced it. It would not light up or do any sounds or anything work. So it might just be a burned board...

If you don't have SLI setup, uninstall, then run driver sweeper and install the lastest version.

If that still dosn't work, I'm sorry to say this, but it can be a dead card.

    Time to revive this thread....

Anyone who has a model with two fans, I want to ask if they both turn on at the same time. Reason I ask is because I spent all day adding a second fan to mine, and whilst it turns on with fan 1 at boot test (i.e they both spin up at max), it doesn't turn on at all when the laptop is in use normally within windows (just the 1st fan turns on)

I did this because my laptop was overheating (again). I thought I'd add the extra fan (something I had been meaning to do for a while) and clear out the dust at the same time. Surprisingly there was no dust at all. I took off the old thermal paste and reapplied some more but only because I took the heatsinks off to investigate (the previous paste was fine too, but obviously by taking it off to check I had to re-apply)

Is there some software mod I can do to activate the second fan? I remember seeing a mod a while back where someone added a cooling pad fan to his qosmio, but I can't find it (wanted to check where he wired it into). I wired mine into the second fan port. I soldered it in as my model didn't ship with the second fan socket in place. It says JFAN2 on the board anyway so I assumed it would work.

Also, what temps do you guys reach? Speedfan says mine gets to 69 degrees before cutting out. (So I assume my GPU shuts down as soon as it reaches 70C)

Edit: Found the fan mod dude, and he splices into the original fan for power instead. Next time I open mine I might do the same, but I didn't want to have to touch the Fan 1...

I don't get why he have done that, you could just easily buy a second orginal fan and just plug it in.

And yes, they both turn on and off at the same time, as far as I can recall.

But you cant just plug another one in. Some models that don't come with the fan do not have a second socket (like the one in the pic and mine). That guy spliced into the original power, whereas I soldered straight onto the board where plug number 2 *should* be. If they are both meant to turn on at the same time, then I guess its a chipset thing, and I'll have to splice into fan 1 as well when I can be bothered.

My idle temp is about 44C. GPU tends to be higher too, I guess because its heatsink gets the air after the CPU one does. Argh what a waste of time why would they even leave the space there and not even enable it.

44C idle is way to high if you ask me, did you have a Quad core or dual core? Can't recall.

however, you know, it can be your heatsink is on its last days.. I've just replaced my heatsink on ACER and got some Cs off. The reason is that, there is liquid inside the heatsink, and after time, it can leak etc.

Best way to test this is to boil some water and put one end of your heatsink into to hot water, the end you are holding on then should get hot very very quickly.

Obviliusly, your heatsink isin't compleatly dead. Or maybe it is not dead at all. But 44C idle, don't sound right to me. And a even higher GPU idle...

Well the GPU is normally around 33 but it gets warmer because the its heatsink is being warmed by the CPU's exhaust air. I thought those were normal temps, as I've had them for so long! When the fan turns off it just sits at around 44-47C

I ended up wiring the second fan in like the other guy, and the cooling performance is much better. I believe my heatsink is ok, as the last time I was cleaning it, I did the opposite to your "experiment", but by accident lol. To remove the old thermal paste I used a spray can electronics cleaner. The solvents evaporated very quickly and even though I only sprayed it on the area with the paste, the whole heatsink got very cold very quickly.

Well, it is good that your heatsink works. And you new secondary fan. What is your new idle temprature now?

The idle temperatures are still the same, because my fans just turn off once its below 50C. So GPU is at 46/47, and CPU at 48 (if I've had the laptop on for a while. Whilst gaming the temperatures are steady at 56/57C. Before it would slowly creep up to 70C and then black screen hang cutout.

From other posts I've found that these temps seems to be about right for the X300? But it seems a bit poor that it only then has a range of about 20C before the thing cuts out. My PC would get to over 100C before the safety cut out engaged.

Okay, so maybe Toshiba did do it that way to reduce the noice? But however, still, your laptop SHOULD NOT RAGE QUIT at 70C. I have had my 9800M GTX, in my X300 to 103C, and it just underclocked. But my system did not shut down. (Hope you can see the point here)

Still, you haven't tell me what CPU you got? If you have a Quad Core, this isin't very very bad, but for a Core 2 Due, it dosn't sound right.

    Thanks for that!

It is Tunay btw, just using a wired 'n' here to look cool! :D

And congratulations on your new rank or whatever you want to call it! :)

    cheesyzombie and gotimekill,

I have used many of Kizwans BIOS modifications on my laptops, and never seen a failed flash. However, I have looked at it and you basically have everything you need. However, if you still feel unsafe, make sure to create a crysis disc. Good luck and let me know the result.

And it's just a core 2 duo. It's not ideal, but the machine is working fine, and I can't be bothered with bashing my head trying to sort this out. Thanks for your input.

Well, I have no idea either tbh. It can be your Tjmax settings are off. Which in case will give you some wired temprature readings.. You can look more into that last pages here; http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...mazing-results-temperature-4.html#post7976739

It might be a chipset thing again. You have the 9800 which I think means you get the nvidia chipset. Maybe that allows for the higher temps? I'll have a look at your link later. Thanks.

I had the PM45 chipset. Never had my temprautres under control thu. But it can be simple as Toshiba decided to shut down the fans just below 40-50 to prevent noice while surfing etc. but as I said again, it should not shut down.

If you have temp problems and you have cleaned the dust then their must be a problem with either the fan or the heatsink. Some part numbers just for reference:
    CPU, CPU/VGA 35w Heatsink = K000063160
    CPU, CPU/VGA 45w Heatsink = K000063170
    CPU, CPU/VGA 45w fan = K000061940
    GPU 2nd fan = K000061950

hey guys, i was just referred to this place by a friend

    i have a Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q701
    Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 @ 2.00Ghz
    4GB DDR3 RAM
    GeForece 9700M GTS
    (1) 7200RPM HDD

i was wondering what i would be able to upgrade to, i want the best processor while still staying in the 25W TDP range so i dont change the power draw on the mobo

    any help would be great

Power draw to mobo won't be a issue. For the best of the best QX9300. Best Core 2 duo, T9900.

You can upgrade to 8GB RAM, buy some good quality RAM modules.

You can upgrade to a SSD drive and buy a secondary 750 or 500GB HDD for data storage.

What do you do with this laptop? Gaming, surfing, watching movies?

If you give me more information, I'll let you know what would be the best upgrade for you..

i watch movies streamed to my 55" tv and i play alot of games

and if i get the best of the best, what kind of cooling will i need for the extra heat output then

and i was going to use the SSD for the boot drive and just keep the HDD i have in here now for storage 185GB is enough and i have a 2TB external so im good, i just want the performance

Okay I see. Then I would actually go for a QX9300 and SSD drive. A normal user like that would not max out the ram usage, do you do that? Have you ever monitored your usage?

A better CPU would give you much better results in games and overall performance, especially combined with the SSD drive. A better GPU is also possible, but that would not have any other effect then better gaming performance.

Can you check your chipset? So you have intel or nforce? Also do you have two or single fan?

i currently use 54% of my RAM and im not doing anything heavy, ive also been looking around for QX9300 and they are on the top end of price, is there any upgrade for around $150-200

    i have 2 fans

and its an Intel PM45 chipset

You said you wanted a good upgrade :D

However, you can take a look for X9100 or T9900. Those are pretty good Core 2 duo CPUs. I'm in the laptop on my signature using T9900.

I would then atleast by a 1x4GB stick and have 6GB and disable pagefile. It sounds like you're using pagefile alot while gaming, not good. Also, have you done a clean install?

That would be a unbalanced system if you ask me. I would rather get one single 4GB stick, so you have 6GB in total and a SSD drive for the system.

You can basically upgrade everything, included GPU. But, it is no point upgrading to for example to a 9800M GTX when you have a CPU running at 2Ghz. What you can do is to get a SSD drive, which will make your laptop overall faster, but not improve your FPS in games, maybe cut some loading times, but again with that CPU I dubt. I don't think I'll notice any real world improvement from 4 to 8GB either, if you are allready not maxing out the 4GB, which in your case is only when playing games. Hope I'm clear enough.

That seems great! I have long been away from the SSD market, so, I have no idea about there. The T9600 is a good choise. That's what I'm running on my HP. But, I'm little bit worried about that PNY RAM modules, never heard about that company. However, it is cheap.

Dude, take a look on the feedbacks.. It is almost like gamble to buy those sticks..
