From the stock chip that comes with the 706, I saw a performance increase. If your looking for #'s... I will need to look. I also have a OEM QX9300 for sale...

My unit came with the better power supply (200+W one) and heat sink (thick heat pipe). Have you taken your unit apart? I am looking for Thermal Pads at the moment. I am trying to see if my unit had pads prior...

Did not do any bios changes other than update to latest version.

For me, I got a certified tech to install mine but after watching and reviewing this site, I think I can do it myself.

    Replace xx with tt...

    hxxp://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Qosmio-X305/laptop-disassembly-1.htm

I would stay away from ES (Engineering Sample) chips... I know some have good results and I have used in the past but for me the OEM is peace of mind.

Should you undertake this, you should be fine if you built computers before.

I would like to know if you have a thermal pad... Quick way to tell is take off the memory door and take out memory and look above... That is the heat sink for the Nvidia MCP chip... That is really what I am looking for... A pic would be appreciated.

    PM me for additional questions/concerns!

Thanks for the info! I tried to PM you but it says I don't have permission.

What is the current BIOS version? I'm at 1.8

Looking at the specs it says I have a 230W power supply.

I opened up the memory slot and I think it has a thermal pad. Looks like a thin piece of wax paper under the heat sync with a copper tube going above it.

How much do you want for that chip? Is it new or used?

I'm a big time gamer and currently playing SWTOR and it is taxing the CPU really hard and causing horrible FPS. In PvP areas it gets down to 10FPS. Do you think upgrading to this chip would help that much, or do you think its just time for a new rig all togethor?

    1.8 is the latest.

    230W is the right one.

Ah, can you snap a pic of the area you looked at? Remember to make sure you need to remove memory... I would appreciate it. Alternatively, you can wait until you take apart. The thermal pad I am looking for should appear to be white.

My chip is new, oem. Name a fair price. If you add an email, I maybe able to contact you via PM... Who knows.

I am running MW3 real good on my system. I think that this system is still good... My WEI is 7.2 on everything except the HD... 5.9... BLAH

No problem on the assistance!! The items I am asking is the only things I have left to having it awesome!

After upgrading my x305-q706 to the qx9300 chip my computer keeps turning off before it can boot. I can make it into the bios and see that it does see the new chip but can't make it through any type of boot cycle without powering off. I did notice that the fans where not comming on so I think its powering off due to safety feature. I have taken it completely apart a second time to make sure all connections are good and they are, so kind of stuck now  Update: The fans do come on for a sec, just that initial burst that it always does when you first turn it on but then they never come back on. One thing I didn't do was put new thermal paste on the chip but it still had stuff on. Maybe putting some new paste would give it enough time to boot and get the fans going? Not sure but I guess I will try that.

If anyone has any advice please share.

Hey all. I have a Qosmio X305-Q725 with a 9800m GTX that's currently giving me troubles.

While browsing the internet today, the screen suddenly scrambled and the computer froze. Upon restart, the computer's screen was still scrambled, and every restart after that was the same. Only after letting the computer sit for 10 minutes would it boot without being scrambled.

So I let it boot into Win7 and it scrambled again after like 5 minutes.

SO, I took the laptop apart, cleaned it, cleaned and reapplied thermal paste to the GPU. Restarted the computer and immediately opened temp program. The GPU was sitting at around 42c. One minute later it scrambled. Later I restarted it into safe mode, and it worked just fine for however long I let it sit. Tried normal Win7 again, and immediate scramble before I could login.

It sounds to me like the GPU has fried. It's long out of warranty, so does anyone know where I can get a replacement (even a downgrade) without paying an arm and a leg?

    Thank you kindly.

Got some good thermal paste and put it on. Fired up without a problem ran great for about 30 min then started doing the same thing, kept powering itself off. I'm putting the old chip back in and praying that it still works.

The latest Nvidia drivers work just fine. Don't do the clean intall option though. It will wipe out the profile you need to tell the system there is 3 video cards. Just let it do the standard install.

No, there was no thermal pad. I did figure out that the q708 has a 45w rated heat sink instead of the 35w that comes with the q706. I am ordering one of those to see if that will work. I don't think there is a problem with the chip as it will boot and run for a few min just fine. You can hear the fans start ramping up then *click* powered off :(

I guess it could be a bad chip, but I have never seen one that would work for a little bit. Usually its dead or works. Still just not sure.

Ok I was able to figure out that the q706 has a ASSY-3RZ2 motherboard and the q708 has a ASSY-4RZ2 mb Maybe GoTimeKill you got lucky and have the 4R instead of the 3R and thats why you are not having problems? Anyone know what the difference is between them? I can't find anything. I'm not sure how to tell what one I have

You can use either one [SATA III is backwards compatible]. However, your system can only attain SATA-II speeds [PM45 chipset]. SATA-II is still plenty fast.

    SATA-II [3GB/s] vs SATA-II [6GB/s].

Has anyone installed the latest drivers from NVIDIA 296.10? I cannot for the life of me get my control panel to work. It will launch but I do not have any options to change anything. No resolution, color settings or anything. I have the X305-Q706. Also I want to upgrade the RAM and CPU and not break the bank. Not going to pay 1000 dollars for a cpu when I can buy a new laptop for that price. Any suggestions? thanks.

Hello everyone, I have 2 problems with my qosmio x300. The new one that toshiba gave me and which I cannot return until june (since I am currently working on it). 1st my 2nd 9800m GTS when not under stress goes up to 65-70c while the other one stays at 45-46. When gaming both stay between 60-65c same under stress tests. I cannot understand why under browsing and nomral use the one gpu will increase in temperature. Moreover my brightness does not work when on the ac adaptor thus using the sli config. When the onboard gpu works then everything is fine (brightness adjust). When on SLI the brightness does not adjust. I am on the latest bios 1.8 and I have tried all available nvidia drivers even the ones dated from toshiba. Anyone who can help me on either would be helpful.

I remembered that on my previous x300 I had installed nvidia system tools. After doing that the temps of both my gpus are 45-50c while browsing. The only problem that now remains is the brightness problem when on SLI. Any suggestions from people having the SLI setup? Anyone managed to install the latest nvidia drivers with the control panel working?

Hi, i want to do a copper shim mod for this laptop it's the 9800m GTS sli version

the temps when not doing much are 46c/47c and 50c for the 9400m.
But when the gpu usage goes to 100% it can go past 90c on both and it
    shuts down

I opened it and it seems one third of each gpu is not making contact with the heat sink. So i want to do the copper mod but i don't know the size of copper i should buy.

Does anybody know the size? I will appreciate any help.

also does anybody know were i can buy the thermal pads for the gpu ram i found these on ebay

gpu ram thermal pad | eBay

but i don't know if they are the right ones.

    Thanks in advance.

Thats the same problem I had, I upgraded my CPU to the X9100 so i had to removed all the old thermal paste, including the thermal pad which was on the 9400m chip. Not knowing such a big gap between the heatsind and the 9400m existed I first attempted to thermal paste to fill the gap which ended up going over 100c and shutting down itself.

Then i made my own copper shim, I guess it wasn't made properly now my 9400m chip is dead and the x305 is basically unusable except for word/internet (freezes when i install nvidia drivers).

the 9400m on mine does not over heat. It stays at 70c/65c when gaming while the two 9800m go past 90c when usage goes to 100%?

Actually my 9400m always stays at 50c and while gaming 60-65c. My dual 9800m GTS SLI stay at 70-75c under full load and under furmark at 80c. My problem is that when just surfing the net under no load the 2nd 9800m GTS goes up to 70c. I know 70c is not too much but under no load makes no sense.. Moreover when I have the 9800m SLI enabled the brightness does not adjust. Can u adjust the brightness while on the SLI mode and not the onboard 9400? Thanks!!

I can change the brightness regardless of the gpu being used.

How are you getting those low temps? i put AS5 on mine but the heat sink is not making full contact.

right now while i am on the internet the temps are 47c for the 1st 9800m and 48c for the second. The 9400m is at 49c and cpu is at 39c for both cores

I have very similar temps under no load.. my 9400 stays at 49-51c under no load and the 9800c stay at 45-47 (though for some reason the 1 goes up to 70c at some point and then I run a game and it settles again no clue why). Though under load my temps are good... 9400m goes up to 60-65 and 9800 up to 75-80c. Which bios are u using? I believe that my brightness problem has to do with my bios but since I have the latest I don't know a way to reinstall it. Which display drivers and chipset are u using? PS I have not opened up this laptop since its the 2nd one given by toshiba since my 1st one mobo got fried (don't know how) and they extended my warranty. They opened it and cleaned it etc I saw them since I was there while they were preparing it to give it to me cz it was the one they had in the showroom but I have no idea what paste they used..

hey guys, ive been following this thread for a very long time now, although i never said anything.

Here is my problem, i have the x300 with 3 graphic cards, and one of them keeps on overheating ( the 9400) with temps of 70º idle and 90º gaming.

The 2 9800gts are actually pretty cool, with temps of 45 idle and 60/67 gaming.

Ive sent the pc yesterday to a local store to change thermal/clean dust, but now i have the laptop again and the problem remains.

    any suggestions?

Well as mentioned in earlier posts there is a big gap between the 9400m and the heatsink. So the problem is when u open it up and lose the pads u need new ones to cover the gap. Problem is I could not find any official pads. Some people have posted that they used alienware m17x similar pads and did the work.. some did their own modification to heatsinks..

I cleaned the heat sink off with rubbing alcohol, used new artic silver 5 thermal paste on it. Took it apart a second time and put more paste on it and it booted into windows, but shut down a few mins after that. Won't boot again.

Has anyone used a coppers him on the x305-q706? If so what size did you use? After doing my processor it looks like my heat sink is not making good contact with my processor or the chipset.

So I called a local metal fabricator and gave him the following measurements. .59x.59x.05 (WxLxT). He cut me two pieces and since they were so small he didn't charge me anything. I put artic silver on the CPU and the GPU, both sides of the copper shim and on the heat sink itself. It fixed my reboot after qosmio splash screen after upgrading my CPU to P9600. At idle my temps are CPU 38/video cards 9800M GTS 50 and 46/ 9400M G 67.

ok so after playing swtor the 9400m g was up to 72c/ and the 9800M gts was 53 and 46. Any idea why the onboard chip was so much hotter. Is that the actual chipset that is beside the cpu?

Well done mate! Always the onboard gpu get hot. up to 70c while gaming is absolutely fine. Even if u look at m17x r1 forums which had the same motherboard with the same 9400m onboard gpu when they had it turned on (for us there is no option in the bios to disable it -- toshiba's fault) they had similar temps with us for it. I think the reason is that it doesnt make good contact with the heatsink. Although u provided copper it might not provide same contact as if it was directly contacted to the heatsink, though thats a guess. Even for me when surfing the net its 55-60c and while gaming 60-68c and it has come from toshiba factory so has the original pads (just for ur reference!). Ps the 2nd gpu heating toshiba came back telling me that it has to be a heatsink malfunction and that they are going to change it for me as soon as I return them the laptop.

Mine is x300-14x which has the same chipset and I have installed 8gb working perfectly well so it shouldn't be a problem.

I think in the beginning the laptop supporter 4gb ram but then with the bios update it supported up to 8... Not sure though! Tried mine and worked! Bios 1.7 and 1.8 works with 8gb ram for me!

What version driver is everyone using? I am having a hell of a time getting the drivers to work right? I was using the latest one, but when you I scan using the NVIDIA website it tells me my main card is 9400M G. I don't know if it is using the SLI ones.

So it is finding all 3 gpus.. I am using 270.61 cz it gives the highest fps at least for me. The latest I could use is 280.26 . I tried the 296.10 but it either installs and then after restart black screen or after clean installing it I do not have nvidia control panel (which sometimes I need to set a single gpu mode for certain games). If you want to check if your SLI works go into nvidia control panel on the toolbar on top select 3D settings and then select show sli visual indicator. Then run a game. If the SLI indicator shows up your SLI is working correctly. If not then try my current drivers 270.61.
