Toshiba Qosmio uses NON-gimped GPU (unlike ASUS). It is the 192 bit GTX 560m.

I believe only the ASUS G73/74 from Best Buy has the gimped 128-bit GTX 560m cards. I also believe some G53s have gimped GPUs.

    Good luck

the walmart version seems to only be an i5, where the amazon seems to be an i7. I think i'm going to go ahead and order from amazon, because it seems that that's the only place where you'll receive a free xbox with your purchase.

Thank you everyone for the great insight towards the laptop. I purchased my laptop through AAFES, just FYI. Again, thank you for the helpful information.

Follow up question, with the Qosmio x775-Q7272 having the potential for a SSD, is there a specific brand that would be considered one of the best on the market. Meaning, I keep reading of other people trying out SSD for their laptops, only to have their SSD crash.

I went to newegg to look up some options for a reliable SSD (256gig). Anyone have some thoughts on any specific models?

Looks to be a "Microsoft Store" exclusive (US based store). Only real difference I see from the 7272 is that the 73 version has a BluRay WRITEABLE drive.

    Toshiba Qosmio® X775-Q7273 17.3" widescreen Laptop (Red) | Laptops | Computers | us.toshiba.com

Yes, the free xbox promo is only for US students (or students attending a US school).

Intel seems to constantly be the best SSD brand. Intel SSDs cost a lot more, but if you want quality, they're probably worth it. Since you have a SATA III capable laptop [hopefully], I would shoot for something with SATA III.

    Good luck

Not sure about the SATA III, here is what I have:

    Storage Drive

    500GB (7200 RPM) + 500GB (7200 RPM) Serial ATA hard disk drives
TOSHIBA Hard Drive Impact Sensor (3D sensor)

Does that answer if my laptop has SATA III?

The HM65 Chipset (Sandy Bridge) supports SATA III speeds (6.0 Gb/s). Now whether or not Toshiba allows users to attain those speeds is another issue.

Guess that the local computer shop will have to work this. I do hope SSD is an option. If not, then 1TB HD space has its benefits too, just slower. Thanks again!

Did you keep the second 500gig HD? Also, can anyone confirm if the laptop is SATA II or III capable. I went to the Toshiba website and still cant confirm if the laptop is SATA II or III capable.

Yeah I hear you, Alex. I think I am going to wait about another year to upgrade my Qosmio X505-Q893. I want to see if Toshiba revisits the 18.4 inch screen AND if they make a nicer laptop design. I really don't like the "look" of the X770 series. And that is odd coming from me, because in my entire life I have NEVER bought a PC (laptop or otherwise) based on its looks. So while that is a very secondary concern, I am absolutely in love with the aesthetic beauty of the X505 series and want to see what Toshiba does with the next gen of Qosmios (not just a refresh of the X770's).

My Q893 is advanced enough to play any game out there now, and so far nothing is coming out in the near future that will even be a challenge even for the X505's, particularly with the 460m GPU's. So I can afford to wait and see what Toshiba is going to do in the future. ;)

Hey ChiroVette, long time no see!

I'm totally with you on the ugliness of this current X770 series...the X505 looks like Natalie Portman next to the Medusa X770. Looks are definitely not a priority, but I'd rather not retch every time I see it.

I'm not sure whether Toshiba will revisit the 18.4" format. I personally doubt it, which is a shame, cause the only other gaming 18.4" left is the Alienware M18x at 2-3x the price.

How's your Q893 treating you so far?

If you can, wait it out. 2012 is the last year of the "i-cores" (Ivy Bridge), then Intel comes out with new tech in 2013 (Haswell; 22 nm).

By then, GPUs are expected to be as small and power efficient as their CPU counter parts (22 nm; lower wattage needed).

I'm thinking in 2013, we could have gaming laptops that get 4-7 hours of real battery life; OR perhaps very slim gaming laptops.

    **EDIT**
I TOO WANT THE 18.4" QOSMIO TO COME BACK! :D :D I don't think the 18.4" size will come back, unless 18.4" laptops become more available with other manufacturers, thus creating demand for them.

Looks like Toshiba has come out with a x770 refresh.

The only difference I can find is the refresh come with "newer" processors (they are about 100mhz faster); so not much of a change.
Although, Toshiba is taking a step in the correct direction and allowing some features of the Qosmio to be customized (haddrive, ram, optical drive).

Recently bought a x775-Q7272 for $1300, and after 2 weeks of searching it was the best deal that wasn't refurbished or from a small reseller brand. It comes in tomorrow, I'll post more on it.

I already love it, and I don't even have it, I'm such a kid..

I got my x775 q7272 from Newegg, and I am extremely happy with it. Optimus gives me a lot more power and battery options (one of the primary reasons I chose this over a comparable ASUS) and the speakers are a pleasure to hear. I only have good things to say about this laptop, with one exception.

The heat on this laptop is ludicrous. It vents a ton of it out the left side, but it doesn't seem to be quite enough. I play Mafia 2 at the highest settings, and half of the time it plays smoothly, and half of the time it plays at single digit frame rates. I suppose this is because of the GPU/CPU overheating. I want to know what I can do to prevent this. I have a cooling pad (for a 14 inch laptop) but it simply isn't cutting it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

That's unfortunate. It sounds like the CPU is throttling due to high temperatures. There's a way to by pass it by using a program called "ThrottleStop".
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/531329-throttlestop-guide.html

ThrottleStop prevents the CPU from downclocking due to high temperatures.
When you use the program I would keep a close eye on the temperatures, as the Qosmio could reboot if the CPU gets too hot.
From what I hear the ASUS G73SW has the same problem.

    Good luck

What are you talking about "didn't perform well"???
AnandTech - Toshiba Qosmio X775: Toshiba's Gamer Grows Up

Of the things people don't like about the x775 laptops performance is hardly the thing they complain about.

I will give you that a LOT of people don't like the screen or the looks. Read all the complaints with the Asus and MSI equivelant systems with keyboards, power buttons, or screen failures though. You don't see crap about any consistant problems with these Qosmios.

I'm just an old fart that wants a portable computer I can take on the road. The Qosmio plays BF3 or WoW with the settings at reasonably high levels and for my purposes the 7275 I picked up from Costco was a BARGAIN. Two 7200 rpm drives allows me to seperate the swap file and the system drive. Optimus means I can do simple surfing for at least a few hours on battery power in a pinch. 2 years of warranty through Toshiba/Costco keeps me coverered until I'm ready to pass this beast of a laptop to one of my nephews and upgrade anyway. I've owned this Qosmio for almost 3 months. It boots fast, performs well and I REALLY like the keyboard. I will admit i don't love the screen but it beats hell out of the screen on any laptop my company has given me in 12 years. The only other things about the system I don't care for is the power supply and it's plug.

I've had my laptop since May, I never had throttling issues whatsoever. I don't know why some guys make a big deal of this issue. If you noticed (in the asus gaming forum) we are mostly just concerned of higher GPU Overclocking. I myself OC at a stable 828 core / 1728 memory with a bandwidth of 82 Gb/s.

Max GPU temp at OC is 76*C (TW2), 76*C (Metro 2033), 80*C (Crysis2) all at 1080p, DX11, High Resolution Texture, Ultra-ish TW2 after 4 hrs. of intensive gaming, with CPU temps of 71-72 after 4 hrs. with an OC gpu.

Throttling is supposedly to occur at 100*C cpu temp. Never happens to me..

The slowdown still persists, but ThrottleStop insists that the clock modulation and Chipset Clock Mod are at a steady 100.

The x775-q7272 is the US version, whereas the x770-107 is the European version.
Specifically, I don't know of the differences, but here's the spec sheet for the 107.
    Qosmio X770-107 - Product Specifications - Toshiba
<strike> Looks like the 107 comes with a 1080p screen and is NON-3D; something the US models do not offer. </strike>

I guess the 107-3D is the European equivalent to the US x775-3DV78 (a step above the q7272).

    Hi everybody,

I own a q7272 too and I am using the "Battlefield 3 nvidia driver" at the moment. While it gives me better performance over the Toshiba's display drivers, I am experiencing lots of throttling in numerous games at stock clocks. And the weird part is that neither the GPU nor the CPU gets too hot.

Any suggestions other than rolling back to the good old drivers by Toshiba? Because somebody was talking about a bios downgrade that disabled the GPU related throttling but I have not tried that kind of a solution yet.

You should unpack bios downloaded from http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/sby5v110.exe

1-After unpacking the files click the "launcher.exe" and it will bring up a window. Choose the option to write on a CD.

2-It will automatically start your "default burning" software. Choose to burn the .iso file named "os2011158a_110.iso" in the folder you unpacked the downloaded file.

3-After burning the CD, restart the system and press f12 then choose ODD as the boot option.

4-And when you are in the command prompt window. Just type in BIOS. And press Enter. When the process is done restart the PC. (or just turn it on when it shuts down.) You are done!

By the way, temps are never dangerous without a cooler for me.I am running the GPU at 875core(1750) / 1750 mem. And the max temp I get while maxing out Dirt 3 is 83 C.

O ya, it looks nice :D
But remember, the F755 is a Glasses-FREE 3D notebook; the only one of it's kind.

If you like the looks, perhaps look at a Toshiba Satellite P750 series.

I'm new here to this Forum and Boy do I wish I had discovered it BEFORE I made my Qosmio X775 purchase!

I had considered buying an Alienware laptop in leiu of building a new deskstop but went with the X775 because of the price and the fact I had bought an X305 in 2008. And the X305 was a GREAT gaming laptop!

But this X775 IMHO is a step backwards. 1st of all I MISS the X305 4 speakers as opposed to the X775's two. 2nd, WHY in the world did they but the exhaust vent on the left hand side as opposed to putting it in the back??

You wouldn't believe the heat this thing puts out when trying playing a game.

And I mean "trying". Crysis 2 runs like a slide-show every 5 minutes or so during gameplay with the Core 0 temps running anywhere for 74 to 88 degrees. Dues Ex; Human Revolution fares little better.

I bought a laptop fan (Cool Master Notepad 2) which helps some, but NOT much.

The fan is working well judging by the amount of hot air being blown out of the left side. (Does this laptop have just ONE Fan???)

Everything else appears to be working normally. The BIOS is 1.30 and I've installed the latetest drivers. DirectX 11 is also installed.

I read where someone suggested rolling back the BIOS to 1.10 but I a bit reluctant to do it.

    Anyone have any other suggestions?

Not happy at all with THIS laptop.

PS: THANKS for letting me vent! :(

I have the x7753d laptop and had the same problem with games running slow. I down-graded my bios to 1.1 and now games run great with no slow downs or lag. The problem was driving me crazy at first but now all is good. :)

    Thanks!

I may break down and try this as Battlefield 3 is coming out at midnight and the next COD is coming out next month. But you would THINK that someone in Toshiba's "Quality Control" dept. would have beta tested BIOS 1.30 on GAMES to see if games would STILL run properly on THEIR "GAMING LAPTOPS" First BEFORE releasing it FIRST!!!

    A couple of questions:
How big a hassle is it to change the BIOS? When doing so void the warranty? Any danger of "cooking the the board" with the BIOS changed? What are the core temps under BIOS 1.10? Are you still using a laptop cooler with BIOS 1.10?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the rants!

    ;)

I had no problem flashing the bios, not sure if it voids the warrenty but I spent weeks looking for a fix to my video game problem. Look on this fourm and you can get the 1.1 bios. I installed the bios to a disk, re-booted
from the disk drive and then when you see the prompt type "bios" it will then remove the new bios and install the old one. It really is that easy..

I think the above posters were saying the BIOS downgrade ONLY addresses the CPU/GPU throttling [game slowdowns].

As for the 3D drivers, I don't know.

I just installed the newest nvidia driver 285.62, Ran BF3 and other games with out a problem. I also played the games in 3D with no problems. :)

2 seperate issues. The BIOS works for all x775 laptops. BIOS is for the motherboard.

But the graphics drivers from nvidia seem to only work with the NON-3D laptops as of yet. I would call Toshiba to let them know to either update their drivers or allow users the option to upgrade to nvidia released drivers.

    Good luck
