Yeah I upgraded to 1.6 bios. Then I remembered people saying that about the 1.1 bios so I downloaded that tried to install and it gave me an error saying I already have a newer version of the bios so it wouldn't let me install it. This is not doing the CD-rom method just directly installing it. I just got home and I don't have any CD-rom's of course lol. But I do have DVD-Rdl discs so I'm gonna see if I can save the 1.1 bios to that disc and try that method and see if it can override the "you already have a newer version error. Idk if you know anything about CD-rom's or DVD-Rdl and if the difference will really matter.

Found out I just have to go into my Bios and make it boot directly from Cd-rom...So I went into my bios went to boot and In order this was the list: HDD1/SDD1, HDD2/SDD2, ODD, USB, LAN. But no cd-rom I went into all the other tabs and looked carefully but couldn't see it.

    X775 / 770 power plugs

How many times has yours fallen out?

Well, I think Toshiba is trying to address the hundreds of destroyed power jacks, which must occur yearly, from various posts.

After breaking a few over the years I have to applaud Apple’s MagSafe!

As of now I’m using the Velcro loop to release the floor to desk strain from the “FAT JACK”. Twice I have gotten battery warnings due to plug wiggling loose unnoticed.

At least I have not broken the jack loose from the motherboard. :)

Haha yea I guessed with that one but for some reason its not reading my dvd it just boots up without it...So i tried to do it with a USB drive and same thing the screen would go black a underscore would be blinking in the top left hand corner of my display. Then the windows start up would start. Idk if im copying the bios wrong but I just pretty much downloaded it from the toshibas website then copied the 14 files into a blank usb.

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious...or something you've already done...but you have to create a "bootable" disk...which means the necessary system files along with the bios file. The Toshiba utility will do that for you. There are videos that have been linked here that show how that's done if you're unfamiliar.

    We got ours from here:

K000126450 - Toshiba Laptop Miscellaneous Parts

The ribbon cable is attached to the connector which slides into a second connector on MB. You may need to look for the one (1) metric screw that holds connector down. I had a bunch of parts laying around but I think it was the same size as the screw holding the bottom plate on. Try it and see?

If you booted from the CD there will be a bunch of text.

The final line says "FreeCom Version" blah blah..

    Then you should see;

C:\> with the blinking cursor. Here you type "bios" then ENTER. Bam! bios installs then you reboot. Did i miss something?

You burn a CD not DVD.."ImgBurn" is a program and easy to burn ISO files to disk. The program is free and does a checksum to insure a good disk.

Hey, once you get this down you can slap yourself on the back...we all got to start somewhere, no?

I originally had issues with the 3D on my X775-3DV80 but once i installed the latest beta drivers from Nvidia things cleared up, But once it went into sleep mode it wouldn't wake up the screen. I always disable that anyways.

    My question is two things.
Im looking for a disassembly guide so i can work on getting some better thermal paste in there.
And im also going to switch my main HDD too SSD and i could have sworn i read 7mm drive was needed, Is that true or will a 9.5mm drive work?

Thats great news on the drives, I want a good SSD badly as the Seagate XT 500/4GB hybrid drive is actually testing slower than the 5400rpm 750GB storage drive.
Aaack! I hate digging into a new expensive laptop and no guide, But i like cooler temps alot more than im afraid of going inside. If i do ill take pics as it will help reassemble also as well help in making a guide.

No cooling pad needed for my X775-Q7384...the raised back due to the battery elevating the chassis seems to provide good airflow. I've never had stability issues at all...but from what I have read here, I am the exception. Hope you enjoy your X775...mine has been awesome!

I got the 7270. But, Ive got a 2820qm, ram, artic silver 5, and the coolermaster u3 ready for it. If it comes down to it I will mod the bottom to "accept" more airflow! So whats the deal with the 2nd HD. Will I need to buy the cable also to make it accept a HD? And can anyone give me information about the bois? Is it simplistic or can i overclock from it? Any sort of limitations on mini wireless cards? I have a intel 6300 for it too.

I think I'm going to pass on the Qosmio X775 and wait for a 2012 Ivy + Kepler refresh from Toshiba if they are planing on doing so, if not then I'd probably go with a Samsung 7 series with Ivy + Kepler.

Thanks for all the info guys.

    UsnRobert,

Please post pictures instruction how you disassemble your x775
Mine need new thermal paste now after playing very good for nearly 6 months.

Appreciate it if you help with this disassembling, never done it before. Pretty scare if I might damage it. My new arctic mx-4 has not arrived yet from the US.

Also what precaution should I know when I open my laptop.

    Thanks in advance,

Did you order already? You can save some serious bucks buy buying the X775-Q7384 listed in the Market Place. Look for the guy with SIX kids :D

Really, you will spend $30 for the second drive connector, and, always the risk of a borked warranty. There were no i7 deals when I bought mine so I have to dig around the trash bins.

You already purchased the 2820gm? $500! I'll buy your old i7 depending on which way you go

If all else fails, post your takedown :) I'm looking for a bargan on the 2540M. They should be giving the stinky old i5's away, no?

    Thanks.

Of all the gaming laptops I like the Qosmio the best simply because it's light weight and offers probably the best price/performance ratio in it's class when compared to other gaming laptops with the same specs (GTX 560M) and I honestly dig the look even though it's not the prettiest of the bunch.

Hopefully Toshiba comes out with a 2012 refresh Qosmio series (nothing was announced @ CES 2012) with even a GTX 660M (early benchmarks show it's about the same as a GTX 570M, 45W TDP which should be good on Qosmio since the 75W TDP GTX 560M had throttling issues and should make the Qosmio refresh series even cheaper since almost every other gaming laptop is going with a GTX 670M the real replacement to a GTX 560M) and I'd be happy to buy.

Ahhh I wish I would have seen that. I had been scowering ebay and craigslist. I actually didn't do tooo bad. I found the 7270 for $750 shipped and the 2820qm for $300 shipped. I haven't had any issues with the 1600x screens personally. I always have to turn the 1080 down to 900p because I'm a performance junkie. Having it a native resolution is much more pleasing to me.

LOL, all this reminds me of the the old Gateway commercial where the smiling guy, in convertible, has arm around his new T5 box...but then spies the new T6 on the billboard..ugh oh. Smile leaves face...

I love the pace of "tech" and darn near everything I buy ends up junk. :D It was 4 years since my last jump.. but would like to do it yearly!

As an option a 75W TDP GTX 670M would nice but a 45W TDP GTX 660M would be ideal since the X775 has throttling problems with a 75W TDP GTX 560M.

It's not about the price really but I'd rather have a stable non throttling laptop over a high performance one that throttles any day besides it's not like the GTX 660M is slow or anything when compared to a GTX 560M it's just not as fast a GTX 670M.

Again...the throttling issue is only an issue with certain bios revs...I run 1.10 and have never had throttling on the GPU. Have never had a reason to update to 1.60...but from what I hear, it resolves a lot of throttling issues also....

..and 1.1 is the only bios that will let Furmark run without throttling. So, why did Toshiba create 1.2, and on, which has throttling problems all over the map?

The whole throttling problem affects Asus as well.. and others? I'm curious as to if the next refresh cures this or SOS?

The strange part is the G74 has two heat pipes, but I'm not up to the throttling "work arounds" from various threads.

Nemix77, what exactly is "throttling" in the context of a computer's GPU?

Throttling is usually when the GPU/CPU downclocks while in use, to prevent further overheating of the component. Usually results in sudden choppy fps after playing a game for a while. The x775 has no throttling in the initial 1.10 BIOS, and throttling seems to be later removed in the 1.60 BIOS.

Chiro, I know you have a x505 Qosmio [like me], which doesn't seem to be affected by throttling issues; I'm guessing this is mainly due to the dual-fan setup the x505s have [however, last time I checked, which was months ago, the ASUS G73SW also have the throttling issues mentioned above which also has dual-fans].

I was under the impression that the 460M was 75w, the 560M was around 60w, and the 570M was 75w. o.o

All I did was Goggle the term "G74 throttling" and came up with several hits.

Like on the x775's with 1.2 and above, FurMark will throttle according to this site; AnandTech - ASUS G74SX: Noteworthy Updates to ASUS' G7 Series

I would search for any throttling/game/laptop combos if this a showstopper or simply run the GPU bechmark, Furmark. Any game that will push your GPU as per Furmark should throttle.

I'm using 1.6 to take any safety/tech advantages over the original 1.1 and none of my current games throttle..so far. Does your? I'm also using newer beta drivers but not sure if anything was gained using them. I will drop back to 1.1 if any game starts to throttle or I need to run Furmark or the like.

The question remains as what is exactly what is causing the throttling? All the links point to heat. But, mine and many others, do not overheat as per using several heat monitors. The 1.1 bios does run my laptop CPU around 4C higher when gaming..nothing over 85C with ambient around 74F. Summer time temps may be a different story.

My only guess is that the hardware is looking at the rate of rise, but may be plain bad guessing. Toshiba and Asus are not talking.

So you guys are having throttling issues... and no one has opened thie r laptop up and modded it? What is everyone waiting on lol. I rolled over from dv6 thread and that is mod central compared to this. Ive never had a laptop that didnt throttle when pushed btw

I think a new x775 "owners lounge" thread needs to be created to make this more productive and less hypocritical

    What was hypocritical?

You might as well read the whole thread by your statement. Mine does not throttle as well. My old FX never throttled, but will shut down when GPU hits 105C.

That wasn't a jab at anyone but the guy who decided he didnt want a x775. Just see a lot complaining and more problem solving in other threads and wanted to bring that mindset here :)

It's pretty common knowledge in this thread that the 1.10 and 1.60 bios solve any throttling problems...so, no offense, but there really wasn't a problem left to resolve. I have also had many Asus G series machines and am quite familiar with some of the firmware nightmares that came with the 5870 video card back in the day...as I recall many of those involved specific bios updates working with a certain driver. In the case of my X775, I have never had throttling...period...although I did immediately flash the 1.10 bios...and never have any issues updating to whatever Nvidia driver that I choose to use...be that WHQL or beta.

Point to all this? I think we're doing just fine with our current "mindset" :)

Having a huge user base helps bring more ideas, such as mods, to the table. LOL, Asus, HP and Dell have at least three forums each?

A lot of users are a bit miffed at having to deal with issues that should have been addressed at the design table. BIOS updates, modding the BIOS or hardware swaps is not the out of box gaming experience expected for the $1,500+ paid as per threads.

This is what this thread has mainly addressed with lots of repeated questions. The suggestion of a modding only thread IS a great idea. LOL, start modding y’all!

My RC 450 helicopters and target air rifles are killing my toy budget so me, myself and I will have to shop carefully (cheap) or wife will have me killed. All donations accepted.

For my 775; the second drive connector was found and installed. This summer my plan is new 5G/BT WIFI card, re-paste with possible new CPU, but total re-paste for sure with added hair ball removal. I will be looking into making an expanded removable bottom plate, for easy access like Clevo, if workable.

I can certainly pick up a few fps with a faster CPU but for me that would only be used for faster video encoding. The faster i5’s should be cheap but will do i7 in a heartbeat depending on price. Are the 775 heat pipes same across the line? Something I will need to check on.

My current 900p screen is just OK for intended use but my old (way sharper) external 1080P is on call for occasional picture editing.

So, I can lurk, with an occasional debate, for the time being. I can only promise take down procedures with pictures when that time arrives if not already on forum.

    thanks

I was really considering this NEW Intel Core i7-2720QM 8M 2.2 GHz (3.3Ghz) Ship Worldwide! | eBay.

The seller confirmed in an eBay message if i had heat issues i could return. I did a lot of research and if i didn't find my 2820qm so cheap I would have gone with this one. ES isn't that scary to me but I think there is 15% chance you will get one that doesn't push what a regular 2720 will. The way i understand it, they are all all the same chips but depending on how different batches performed they became 2720/ 2760 / 2820 /2860.
Long story short at $194 its a somewhat affordable upgrade (compared to $~600 for a new retail one.
I was supposed to get my x775 yesterday but fedex pulled the whole not going to deliver today like I should but gonna say customer wasn't home thing. Super annoying. So no breakdown today. Definately next week.

Also does anyone know if the bios has a blacklist/ white list for wireless cards. Trying to see if my intel 633ANHMW will work with it.
