You know after I installed XP on my X205 and installed the Vista sound card drivers in XP it worked and I noticed now I have the EQ option so I can adjust the sound a bit better and it does sound better than in Vista so I am glad I changed to XP.

I just purchased the Toshiba x205 and noticed that there is a little play in the four prong connector (on the laptop) where the AC adapter plugs into. I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this and if a little play in the connector is normal. I did make a trip to a local CompUSA where they had thre models on display with the same type of AC adapter; they all felt a little loose.

I just purchased 4GB for my x205, but the performance is still at 4.8! I know only 3GB is seen, but you would think the increase in ram would have driven the performance up some. I know it seems to run faster than before. It is only the Kinston ValuRam, though. I hope I didn't buy crappy memory. I have no idea what the memory timings are.

    Any suggestions?

Performance of the memory computed by throughput, not amount of GBs.

Throughput RAM=>CPU is pretty much limited by 800Mhz Front Side Bus on Santa Rosa chipset, so you will not be able to improve it.

I bought 4GB of Geil RAM for X205 laptop and got 4.8 in Windows Vista's scores, too. After I sold the X205, I moved the RAM into my new Alienware and got a 5.1 on the RAM performance (even though it capped off at 2.5GB).

I think it's something with the performance controller/Windows Vista.

My new SLI1 is a little loose also, but my "old" S9359 is tight.

    Hello All...

I just purchased my first laptop yesterday afternoon. I picked up the X205-S7384 from Best Buy for $1349.99 I know it's not the latest and greatest but I am just a casual gamer so hopefully it will work for me.

Total noob here. I've been reading throught the threads and post, but have not seen my issue so I figured better to just ask. I have been experiencing lock-up on power on of my X205 SLI1 since nearly day one. I get to the point where the MS Windows silon finishes and just before the Vista logo pops up on the screen and then nothing. HD stops accesing and system looks like it heads into hibernation. Thought at first it was that I needed to have the power cord plugged in, then thought it must be that I has changing from Battery to AC whild startup was progressing.
Has anyone else been experiencing this same issue or am I just in the weeds alone?

Thanks for all the great postings so far.

Hi guys I have owned my X205-SLI1 with dual 8600M GT cards for about 3 days now.

Having serious gaming issues, the only game I have installed is WoW and I'm noticing Frame Rates at about 3-10 FPS. When i start the game FPS is about 50 then all of a sudden everything locks up and FPS drops significantly.

Further more I am receiving the infamous "Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered" error. I have installed all the hotfixes Microsoft recommends for this issue and still no help. I searched on Toshiba's site for video drivers and the only one listed is extremely old.

I contacted Toshiba directly and was told to update my bios driver. Still no help.

For as far as I can see this is a very common problem among High end graphics card owners who run Vista. I have posted this same information on Microsoft and Nvidia's forums. http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.directx.graphics&tid=346a8f51-c4d2-4969-929a-6fd589ba8750&cat=en_US_a360fbf1-350e-451c-b908-e538a16462b8&lang=en&cr=US&p=1

I have read all pages in this thread and it doesn't seem like any of you are having this issue. I've noticed that some of you are running Bioshock and so on.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue, or does anyone know a fix for it? I am getting a little frustrated because I spent $1999 on this machine and it wont even run WoW reliably.

I'm sure you already tried this, but I had the same problem after running WoW one time. I was sent to Nvidia's website to download the latest drivers and it cleared up for me. I also found that the SLi mode is by default unselected on my system.

How did you get Nvidia drivers? I was unable to get any 8600M GT drivers from Nvidia directly. Everytime i try i am referred to Toshiba which are never updated. last X205-SLI1 display driver update was Sept.

And yes SLI was disabled by defualt for me too however upon initial boot it prompted me to enable it so i did.

I am Acar and i am from Turkey. I have a X200 that has the specs 7700CPU 300GB and 8700GT graphics.
Can you give me a link to a driver for our graphic card that i can play Gears of War without problems beacuse every time i load the game, it crashes even before any level is loaded.
    Thanks in advance.

Hey Acar, I'd recommend giving the newer Nvidia drivers a shot you can find on laptopvideo2go.com, they modify the .inf so you can run them on a laptop, where as Nvidia releases them for desktop models only. They work really well though, increase performance and usually stability in the newer games.... do a search for more info and instructions, but they've got a good FAQ on how to do it. I'm running the 169.09 drivers, working good

Anyone know if 8800M can be 'home installed' into these beasts?

8700M GT has been dissappointing for me, so far, even with 169.09 and o'clocks.

There's a hotfix for SLI mode in Beta right now that you have to register for; I came across by accident; can't say how to find it again. Also there's a file that doesn't get updated when you install new drivers that relates to the error; using Drive Cleaner should fixthat. Modified drivers from LV2GO and the clean install fixed mine; but breaks HDDVD unless you use Toshiba drivers.

    Hi Guys

I own a Satellite x200 s20 which is the big one in europe.

    2 GHZ dual core CPU
    2 x 160 gb disk ( 5400 rpm )
    Nvidia 8700 Graphic Card
    2 GB ram
1 GB turbo cache ( stores most used data so that it can be read from there instead of from the hard drives )

I have had none of all the problems described, my only 2 issue has been a light leakage on my lg monitor. Ive had it send to a service partner 2 times. first time they exchanged the monitor to a new one with the same problem. It now is less visible but still enought to notice when watching dvd's.

Second time they wouldn't exchange it and told me they couldn't do more about it. So ill live with that.

The other issue is that my HD has activity all the time. If i boot and just start in windows, doing nothing then it may be idle for 2-3 sec and then it reads the HD like ½-1 sec again and so it continues. Is this normal ?

Other than that i have played, wow, conflict, bioshock, and many other 3d games with absolutely no lag and running i high resolution ( 16xx x 10xx ) with high details.

My 3D mark05 score is 89xx and my pc mark05 score is 53xx. Nothing is OC, thats just with normal configuration in Vista and the newest drivers from toshiba's Homepage.... btw havent found any drive for 8700 at all from nvidia's homepage.

Please try having your laptop standing idle in vista to see if it reads the HD all the time and post back here.

    Thx a lot

Hmmmm.... now that you mention I have noticed the same thing on my Sli1. Seems like there is constant reading of the HD even though nothing seems to be running. I never really thought anything of it until you mentioned it... just assumed it was a normal thing for vista... I guess we can wait and see if anyone else has noticed this....

Yeah, mine did it a lot with Vista, don't notice it since I've installed XP.... think it's just part of the idle process in Vista, constantly doing something, whatever it is.... I wouldn't worry about it though

    Hello fellow Satellite owners..

I have a little issue with my satellite, mind you I love the thing, it's awesome for everything that I do, BUT my problem is that whenever I disconnect the laptop from the power supply, so it's running entirely on battery power, the wireless drops out.. it doesn't seem like it's putting out the wireless signal.. I've checked the connection on my desktop and the wireless is working fine.. the only way to get it working after it's been unplugged is to reconnect it to the power supply and restart it..

Am wondering if anybody else has run into this problem at all... I've tried turning off all power management features that directly impact the wireless involvement, yet to no avail...

So yeah, if anybody's run into this problem, I'd love the input.. this kinda defeats the purpose of the entire idea of a portable machine...

Thanks a lot! Kickass computer otherwise!

I never had this problem on my sli1 but I do have that happen a lot with my Sony FZ180E Laptop running Vista I got the problem to happen quite a bit less by uninstalling Sony's wireless switching utility, that utility made this happen a lot more frequently, but with my sli1 it did not really happen for me I remember 1 or 2 times it may have happened when I first got it and running XP on it now it really never happens at all.

Yeah.. I was thinkin about wipin it clean and puttin xp pro on it.. (which is what my plan was when i bought it) but then, once i got it, I saw all these fancy peripherals that were on it.. and got to thinkin i'd have to download all the drivers for xp for all these things and yadda yadda yadda, turned into a fiasco in my mind so i just toughed it out with vista.. it's file system is slow and annoying but i manage..

not sure why it's crappin out with the wireless.. guess i'll visit the brain tank that is the "geek squad" and see what new big words they've learned...

    Thanks anyways!

Hello I have an X205-S9349 and out of nowhere my laptop stopped recognizing anything i try and hook up through S-video..i have a S-video to RCA composite adapter cable and i run the S-video end to the RCA input on the tv's and when I go to NVIDIA control panel, displays, single mode is my only option for display mode.. what happened? Why won't it recognize my tv's..I have reformatted my computer since then and it didn't change a thing, I have the latest driver for my graphics card 8700M GT. The cable is fine i tested it on my television sets..Does this sound more like a hardware issue? NVIDIA isn't responding to my e-mails..is there anything i can do or can try doing that i haven't already done?.. Is there a way to fix the S-video port hardware and get it working again or is it done? any help or insight is greatly appreciated.

After 6 months, I am not one bit sorry I bought my x205.

I have been playing everything that has come out quite reasonably as long as you aren't expecting miracles.

I use my x205 for work, at home to game, and everywhere I go... Other than the bloatware, size and weight (which I knew about when I bought it) there have been no real downsides.

If I could do it all again, (and all the variables were the same) I'd STILL buy this laptop. If I were buying NOW, I'd probably look at that gateway with the 8800GTS. If Toshiba ships an x205 with an 8800m, I'd likely be pointing that one out as I have been very happy with this one with an 8700m.

Just joined the forum, and I have the
    x205-s9349,
    17" display
    2gb ram,
    hddvd drive
    vista home premium
    nvidia GeForce 8700.

The display is great, I bought this to play Oblivion and be a graphics tool, which so far it does just fine. Software wise it does come with a lot of junk, which I just ignored. The software annoyances I've had are vista based rather than toshiba.
My only beef with it so far is there is no backward hardware compatibility for this machine.
I had to get adapters to run my favorite keyboard/mouse as this has no ps2 ports. The sound output is either headphone or digital, so my older analog 5.1 speakers can't be attached, although the internal harmon kardon speakers are pretty good. Of course, older laptop cards won't run in the pci express slot, so that issue would have to be addressed also.
I wish I could get a docking station with ps2 ports, and an additional card slot.
I consider this a movable desktop computer rather than a laptop for a road warrior.

Just a quick question to all you Satellite users.. Do you ever notice a laggyness in the base operating system..? ie: opening windows, programs, load times for software? I find that mine dogs pretty heavily opening programs like Maya and After Effects.. I do a lot of graphics work is why I'm asking.. I would think that it would be a lot faster being that the machine has a good processor and a decent amount of ram..

I'm thinking that it's just a Vista thing with it's file system.. I'm in heavy debate of just formatting and installing xp pro onto it.. The only thing i worry about is drivers for all the peripherals that are "in" the laptop..

Has anybody done this to theirs and if so, did you run into any problems doing it? I know "how" to do it, but I just know i'll run into a problem where xp won't support a certain piece of hardware....

    Any help would be wonderful..

I'm hopefully going to get to order my x205-Sli4 tonight, since I sold my HP dv6000 at my school today. I'm going to order it from MacMall since they have it for $2349 and free shipping. I just hope that my parents let me order it tonight so I can have it as soon as possible.

Anyone know if you can shove some 800MHz RAM in and get a decent performance increase?

Vista WEI tells me my RAM is letting my system down.

Thats the same question that I want an answer to also. I can get 4 GB of GeIL 800MHz SODIMMs with built in heatspreaders for like 100 dollars on Newegg... If I can find out if there is a performance increase I will upgrade to them.

I got the x205-9359 and I also find the programs to run sluggish. I thought it would be a lot faster with the CPU and 3 Gigs of memory. I am finding that on certain programs like Visual Studio, my old desktop with a Pentium 4 is running faster.

I also notice the harddrive reading all the time.

I tested some OCZ 800 MHz on mine and it still works at 667 MHz. CPU-Z showed that it remains on 667 because of divider, (I forgot it now, not sure but I think it was 5:6).

After testing some Super PI, I took the same scores... so I returned the memories and put the originals back on. Not worth it!

What made a huge improvement was the Hitachi 200 GB 7200 RPM!!! This is gold!!! Can't tell, only using you will see... it performs just like a high-end desktop!

I got my x205-Sli4 on Thursday of last week and I love it. However, it seems slow sometimes even with a lot of the bloatware uninstalled. Also, for some reason the Toshiba Flash cards and the ConfigFree "radar" lag horribly for an unknown reason (the flash cards open at like 2 fps and it takes ~6 seconds of having the mouse up there to get them to slowly stutter down). I don't know why these two apps render their visual things so slowly because every other 3D effect in Vista and other programs runs smoothly. If anyone knows a way to fix the stuttery Toshiba stuff let me know.

the only way I got around the stock "laggy" feeling was a fresh reinstall of Vista, or a clean install of XP... Vista actually runs really good after a fresh reinstall and some tweaks, and the the only reason I actually went back to XP was for backwards compatibility with some slightly older games that wouldn't work under vista. I was never able to get the stock factory install of Vista to ever feel quick or snappy, and that's what led to the first reinstall and then leaving off most of the Toshiba stuff. Good luck!

is there any way to fix this stupid battlefield 2 refresh rate problem? I have the X205-S9359 /SEC4750 monitor, and have downloaded the new firmware, and have tried everything to attempt to fix this problem, but it appears that i will have to buy a monitor that supports 60mhz to play this game with a $2,000 latop? Does this seem ridiculious? Or did I miss a driver for my screen?

be77solo - I finally returned to work today!!! what a relief, but hey guess what I ended up also downgrading my XPS M1730 to XP like I did on my S9349 and sli1 laptops, Crysis would run very laggy even on the M1730 and the 8800M GTX sli setup under Vista with sp1 and all the tweaks, but in XP the game run smooth at 1920x1200 with all settings maxed and I usually leave AA off but even 2x AA will run ok at that resolution but it is not really needed as the game look so good at that high resolution.

Hi. I have a problem with my x205-s9349 and was hoping someone might have experienced the same and might know of a solution. So, this is a gaming laptop and I got it for that purpose. But, as of right now, this laptop is almost unusable for games. The problem I'm having is a totally random (at least it seems this way) drop in performance for a few seconds and then it restores itself back to normal. For example, I could be playing Oblivion, doing nothing, and my framerate will drop to single digits for a few seconds, and then return to normal. Or I could be playing UT3/HL2 in an intense DM and it'll happen. I have gone into the startup and disabled almost everything I can think of to be safe to turn off. I turned off windows defender. I disabled my visus scanner. Everyhting is up-to-date according to the Toshiba drivers page. I don't know what else I can do. This is entirely frustrating, and for a $2000 laptop, if you ask me, is unacceptable.

I'm to the point where I'm willing to try anything. If you have any ideas, suggestions, anything, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

    -Jason

Have you tried the 169.09 or 174.31 drivers from laptopvideo2go.com, either of those should help with performance with games, maybe preferably the 169.09 drivers.

Got new drivers, still to no avail. Still getting a random drop in performance. I've even upgraded to 3 GB of RAM now and it still does it.

    Hi,

Could you tell me what driver you are using? When I connect my x205-9359 to the 1080p projector using HDMI, I still get the same resolution (1680x1050). It doesn't have the next slider notch for 1920x1080.

    Thanks,

Hello guys im having a problem and i cant figure if its hardware or software, i bought a Toshiba Satellite X205-S9800 laptop recently and it came with 2 GB of ram from the manufacturer, but i bought 2x2 GB Geil 667 MHz PC5300 modules and installed them, now my Windows Vista Home Premium operating system is very unstable, i get blue screens constantly, and startup program crashes, i stripped down everything that came from toshiba, i only left the drivers and essentials, so im asking is this a hardware incompatibility problem, and if it is, can i do something to make it work, or is it a windows problem, because a friend of mine has the same computer with 2x2 GB Geil 800 MHz modules and a 7200 rpm hard drive, the same windows and he has no problems at all, and i need to mention that when im trying to restore my out-of-the-box state using the toshiba dvd's, if and only if i have both ram modules intalled i get this error message after the second dvd has finished copying: Error 10-FC12-0241 Recovery Error. Please help me. Thank you in advance.

System specs: CPU Intel Core2 Duo T5550, RAM 2x2 GB Geil, Chipset Intel Crestline PM965, Video nVidia GeForce 8700M GT

Hello, I've been having problems with my X205-SLI1.
Laptop will sometimes freeze while idling, and sometimes when I'm just browsing the internet. Keyboard/Mouse totally unresponsive, and I'm forced to shutdown manually. Also whenever I'm playing WoW it will freeze and the sound will stutter/loop uncontrollably. I've installed/reinstalled vista/xp sound and video drivers, as well as older versions of them. Also I noticed that after I've reinstalled the drivers everything will be fine for a week or so and then the same problems will start up again. Anyone else had this problem, have suggestions, or possibly know what could be wrong?
btw I'm using Win XP SP2
