has anyone had any luck using Bluetooth in windows 8?
I've installed the Bluetooth driver from the Sony website, and Vaio Smart Network, but detecting devices never finds anything.
I am starting to get dubious as to whether I actually have a Bluetooth module installed! the Bluetooth icon doesn't appear in my system tray, and there is no sign of the Bluetooth adaptor in my device manager (the only ! device is the fingerprint sensor which I haven't bothered to install a driver for)
Hmmm actually I can see the Centrino advanced-n 6235 working fine in device manager and Bluetooth is enabled within there. Tried to download the windows 7 64bit driver straight from intel but it won't install under windows 8, says I need windows 7 or higher doh -
Hi all!, i have windows 7 installed but i have many problems like
Warning that my battery is incombatible and go to hibernate
Vaio control center doesnt have the fan control only system info
I deleted my recovery could someone please make an iso of his recovery:$ -

^ you need the VAIO Smart Network software, and you need to enable Bluetooth from there in order for the adapter to show in Device Manager.
don't touch VESmgr (VAIO Event Service). you need this for all the function keys and the switchable graphics to work.
IA StorIcon is the system tray icon for the Intel Rapid Storage Technology software installed.
VCSystem Tray and VCAdmin are probably related to VAIO Care. -
What are ur guy's battery life for the 15" ?
-
Is there a way to add keyboard shortcuts for enable/disable bluetooth, wireless .. did not find any option within Vail control center..
-
wheres that.
-
Hi everyone.
I have an S13 on order that will hopefully be here in about a week. I'd like to do a clean install of windows and was wondering if this is possible with the recovery media given by Sony, or would I need to purchase another copy of Windows? -
It's a power saving feature in the intel graphics control panel.
My Vaio is being repaired right now so i don't have it on me, but...
somewhere in the intel graphics control panel is an option for intel display power saving or something like that.
Turn that option off and your problem should go away.
(the option will only show up when you're on battery, when you're plugged in it disappears) -
is this it? what do i switch it to?
-
about 4.5 hours being very conservative and just browsing... though i assum eyou may be able to get 5 but not much more than that....
no to the keyboard shortcuts... not that i know of
ive never used the vaio media. i think that it will automatically restore the software... but either way you can get any windows 7 home premium (unles you selected differently) and use the code that comes on the bottom of your pc. you can even torrent the media and compare the md5 sums to ensure it is a clean disk. then burn that... this is legal as you have purchased windows and are using a legitimate install key. -
One of the options was at 0% i forgot which one, i just put the same % and the dimming disappeared.

I just wanted to let everyone know that this laptop is indeed made out of magnesium (as many posters have already reiterated ad naseum).
I just got my laptop in the mail last night, a shiny black SVS15 and ripped it apart today to install the SSD and secondary HDD in the optical bay. Even the little battery bay door is made of magnesium and has the Mg stamped into the panel.
And then to further dispel this, my S15 managed to fall off a table into hard stone tile floor today, just 24 hours into owning it (!). And part of the very thin magnesium chassis chipped off so theres a bit of painted magnesium alloy sitting sadly on my desk. I don't know how plastic or aluminum would have handled it or how a Thinkpad or my MBP would have taken that fall (my friend's MBP literally just pushed the corner in and warped, while my other friend's Thinkpad X60 just shattered the corner right off its magnesium chassis), but that fall hit it hard. I was kind of sad, but kind of meh. I love this machine, but I got this machine to use it, not to stare at it like a trophy (even though I think its kind of a trophy amongst laptops haha).
Just wanted everyone to know that this thing will shatter if its a hard enough drop and the right material to drop it onto (and really taking it apart made me realize how thin the chassis material is and why they couldnt have used plastic to build it this thin). I see this chipped corner as taking away the DONT SCRATCH THE NEW CAR feel to it, and now its officially my laptop haha.
Anyways I love this laptop. Thanks for all the posts from everyone, its been super helpful in helping me find this gorgeous piece of kit. -

You can't as far as I can tell. I used to wake my Thinkpad T400 with the Fn key all the time, so having to push the power button on my S15 has been an adjustment for me. -
Hmmm thought that answer seemed a bit too easy, but actually turns out you were right. I thought I had successfully installed this - tried twice and got no error messages.
Tried again, but ran under win 7 compatibility mode and as administrator, and bingo, it installed.
My BT is now working perfectly, thanks very much.
Looks like I am now fully operational under Windows 8 with no missing features. Nice! -
Little Known Fact:
When you purchase something with a platinum or world Master Card (except in some banks which cut corners), you have an accidental damage and handling insurance which kicks in automatically with the purchase and give 30 or 90 days of coverage (I forget which).
You would then make a claim on the accident that happened with your laptop and get a new one.

Hi all
I followed the guide to install drivers, but i still dont have many things in my vaio control center like fan control
now i cant game cause i cant set the priority to fan -
sounds like a problem with Sony Shared Library...did you install it? We've had some other posts like this and that often was the problem.
-
+1 Shared library is what you need.
-
That was the problem! i went to device management and i saw a yellow exlimation (sorry for bad english)
And i pressed on update driver and my pc rebooted and everything worked thanks!! -
Guys, I'm about to order a S15.
I'm only interested in the IPS screen, so I'm going to order the base model, expecting to get the 100$-150$ rebate.
Is there any deals out there (like the sheet battery or a student discount) that I could get on top of the rebate? I'm a grad student in the US.
Also, is it worth it to go for this laptop from a Dell Inspiron 14z? I have just bought the Dell from BestBuy and I love everything about it, except the glossy screen. Specs: i5 2450, 14 inch, 2kg (same as the S15), Aluminum body and REALLY solid built, no flex or anything. Long battery life (6-7 browsing). and I got it for 450$ before tax. The only bugger is the screen, as I'm supposed to study a lot of ebooks this semester. Should I go for the S15?
Thanks a lot! -
I would go with the S15 over the dell but that's just my personal preference. If you visit the main sony.com site and click on the big ad, you'll be able to get a free PS3 or PSVITA with your laptop. You have to click the ad though or else the codes won't register. I'm not sure if it stacks with the $100 rebate (to get the $150 rebate you need to buy Win7 Professional not Home, I would do it becase it's a free Professional version after the +$50 rebate) but if you copy the rebate form online, I don't think they would know you got the free PS3/VITA so either way you should be able to get your hands on the $150 rebate and free PS3/Vita/additional 10%off

Hi Guys,
My S15 (black) is pretty much a fingerprint collector on the outside. It does look quite bad after 2 days already. Does anybody know if the white version does also show such an issue? I would not expect that but I would love to verify it by somebody who has such a model. Thank you! -
Looks like the customise option has vanished from Sony Europe (UK) again.....
Hopefully back soon -
Hey thanks for the reply!
Problem with that ad is that only 2 models of S15 are listed when you go through, and the base model is not amongst them. So I'd end up paying more for features that I don't care about (like overpriced Sony RAM and the discrete graphics). -
Hey im wondering what the rapid wake technology actually does? I know it saves your work on the HDD before shutting down, but how does that affect wake speeds?
-
It is just the same old Hibernate. The idea is that it is quicker to get back to your workflow then a clean boot. I just turned it off.

Hello all, I have a couple questions about my S13a.
1. When I tried to clone my HDD using EZGig to my Sam830 256gb SSD it says the HDD is too big for it. I only have 45gb on HDD and 400GB of free space. It's seems to me like the software is reading the the free space as data. I've never had this prob before. Any suggestions?
2. I am getting horrible download speeds on speedtest.net with this laptop. I have 30MB download speed package through my cable company. My wife' MB Air gets top download speeds(30MB download 5MB upload) while I'm getting 7MB download and 4.5 MB upload. Anyone have this problem at all? Any idea how to fix this? I have an airport extreme router.
Thanks -
Guys is anyone using this vaio S to play guild wars 2? I'd like to know how the game runs on this machine, especially after gpu bios mod. Thank you =)
-
so they wont let you stack the student discount and $100-150 rebate for windows 7?
-
Hi guys, i gonna sell my battery sheet what do i need to ask for it? and my vaio is 13 inch does it fit on 15 inch
-
Has anyone managed to get the WWAN card to work reliably?
Mine connects fine, works for a while, then drops into a 'No Internet Access' state after a while. From there, it won't disconnect, and I can't get it working again without a reboot. Which is a pain
There's only the original release of the drivers on the Sony driver download page. Maybe somebody's found better drivers elsewhere?
(I'm connecting just via Windows, without the 'OneClick Internet' software) -
Hi guys! I'm totally sold on this laptop. I just cant decide if i should stick to the stock 3210 CPU or upgrade to the 3612QM. That's a $200 usd difference right there. Would the stock cpu be a bottleneck for games? I do light video editing, but nothing professional. Mostly browsing and occasional gaming.
-
For the 2012 13" I presume? I'd be willing to pay $100 for it.
-
$120
All going a bit 'Ebay'....
-
Hi all. I have an SVE15112 that I just purchased (i3, 15.7"), is this the correct forum for me? Sorry for the dumb question in advance, and thank you.
-
Since it's a mail-in rebate, they most likely will let you stack.
https://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/s...odels&catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1
The 4th one is the base model but either way, I'd just spend a few more dollars because with the 10%off + $150 rebate (about $250 savings) you really are getting a steal for what you get. -
Is it possible to configure it with a WWAN (3G/4G/LTE?) card? I'm having trouble finding such an option in the US Sony Store.
I'm thinking of the S13 models. My SA isn't holding out as well as I had hoped (but that's the end result of lots of travel). -
no you bought a vaio E this is the forum for the vaio s
no there is no wwan card for us models.. only European though someone mentioned there being an open pcie slot for one in the us models so there may be the ability to add one later though i would not count on it... -
Oh OK, so the "SV" in the part number don't mean anything? It's an E15112?
-
"SV" Sony Vaio. (i.e. Laptops)
It's their way of distinquishing between TV and camera. For example, most of the Sony NEX camera lenses have a code starting with "SEL". Sony E-mount Lens. Others are not so clear, for example I have no idea why their TV sets all start with "KDL"
Your code means SVE15112 means it's a 'Sony Vaio E 15 inch with configuration 112'. Whatever the 112 might be. -
a few pages back someone was asking about cloning a hard disk... even though you only have 45 gb you still have a partition that is 400 gb large... and more importantly the data that is on the hard dive isnt purely on a 45gb area... it is strewn all over the 400gb so a program that wants to copy bit by bit the hard drive cannot compress the large hard drive into the small one. you can defrag the disk then compress it using windows disk manager or ubuntu gparted your choice then clone it over... the two apps mentioned will move the data so it is in a smaller area and change the pointers to point to the right place. that way when the cloning program copies bit by bit it can copy all the data in the 256gb size.. the rest wont matter...
-
Are you sure we'r looking at the same thing? I wanna get the 15 inch model and in that page I can't see the 15 inch base model...
-
you cant get the base model with 10% discount only 5%... was just haggling with a phone rep and all they would give was the 5%. They also said I couldnt get the $100 rebate in addition to the 5% but something seems kinda off about that.
-
You should be able to, I don't know how they would know.
-
Well, I sent my rebate form in a few days ago. If anyone gets a definite on what's stackable post it up.
Either way probably not going to return it. Laptop is just too good with the BIOS mod. -
Ah, my SA (previous gen to S13P) had the ability, there was a separate mPCIe slot for the card, and an extra rubber flap to cover the SIM card slot.
Oh, well, maybe the refresh (I'm guessing in less than a month) will have it.
Thank you! -
Doas anyone encounter a whine sound on the Sony Vaio S15? I hear that high frequency sound especially when the fan is slow.
-
Hey Guys, I have the 2010-2011 Vaio Sa series which did not have SATA 3 support in the newer BIOS. I wanted to ask the new S series owners is there is SATA 3 support with disabling the optical disk drive? Or if there is a modified BIOS that enables SATA 3? And if there is no sata 3 support, does anyone know why sony would even disable it in their new S series?
