    Hi,

I can not really decide which way to take so I will ask you that own one of my option what you think.

    Option 1: Buy one 8gb Vaio Serie Z // VPC-Z23Z9EB // 256 Gb HD 1.2 kg (notouch window wih Win7)
    Option 2: Buy one Acer S7 ( 13" / 4GB / 128Gb HD ) 1.3 Kg (touch window wih Win8)
    Option 3: Buy one Lenovo Yoga ( 256 Gb / 8gb ) 1.52 Kg (touch window wih Win8)

Option 1 is more expensive but gives maybe better computer.
Option 2: gives not to heavy computer but bad battery time
Option 3: Heavy but better touch feelings.

    Thanks for the help

depends on whether you want to use win 8 or not....
personally i think win 8 is kinda useless without a "touch" screen....

if win 8 isn't a priority to you, then i would go for the z...my 2 cent..
or wait until sony refreshes with the z line with windows 8...likely won't see it happening until june 2013....

It really depends on what you need. The Sony Vaio Z offers a full-voltage quad core CPU as an option; it really does not compare with any of the other laptops in raw power (fast CPU, fast SSD). There aren't many <15" laptops with this much power.

You can update to Windows 8 rather easily, there are no driver issues. I personally prefer Windows 8 even on non-touch devices. It is generally faster than Win 7.

If you do not need that much power (e.g., you mostly use the laptop for browsing, Office, light photo editing), the Yoga should be enough. Watch out, though, that the Yoga does not have active digitizer pen support. This means that you can only use your fingers, or a thick capacitive stylus. Handwriting on the Yoga is generally out of the question. This is a deal-breaker for some.

Yeah, this is still really bugging me, as is the lack of brightness. Can anyone else confirm this, particularly the people who are happy with their screens?

has anyone noticed a "high pitch/buzzing" sound coming from their svz?

i just bought the laptop last friday and noticed that if i am in a quiet area, i could hear a high pitch buzzing sound...i tried to disable wifi and bluetooth as well as mute the speaker and mic to isolate the problem....but i couldn't

it's not noticeably loud or anything....even in a super quiet area...however, i just wanna make sure that there is nothing wrong with it...

does anyone have any fix? other than having sony involved in this?

Nobody had ever found any solution to it that I have heard of. Some people say they can't hear it in theirs, so it may be many units have it and some don't.

Sony hasn't addressed it that I know of.

When I plug the iPhone5 earphone I was getting sound from both the earpiece and the SVZ speakers. On the other hand when I use the a-JAYS Four earphone there is no sound at all(earpiece/speakers).Found at my local electronic store an extension cable that I am now using and problem has been fixed.

Incidentally, I've posted on this here before, and done a ton of research on it.

You can definitely find headphones that will work, but I could not find a TRRRS (tip ring ring ring sleeve) connector anywhere, except one really obscure electronics store online. I spoke to many Sony reps on the phone, one of whom searched for a half hour for a wiring diagram for this jack, all to no avail. Short of taking apart the headset that came with the Z3, there appears no way to find out how it is wired. This makes it hard to figure out how you might adapt a standard TRRS headset to this jack.

    Bit frustrating.

I haven't seen any pinkish problems with mine.
If you have any pictures I can try to see if mine have it too.

As for the brightness, it seems good to me. It does seem a bit lower than my previous laptops but having it at 70% right now seems perfect. Even if I set the brightness all the way down, it is a bit hard to see but still readable.

It's definitely not horrendous but I have my brightness set constantly at 100% and still find that in some circumstances it's just a little too dark to be comfortable. And then the moment I put it next to a decent screen it's immediately obvious that it's worlds away in quality - have you tried to compare it against another screen?

I know that I'm picky, but for the price and range of the laptop, and the comparison against their own equivalent earlier model, it's not even close to good enough IMHO. Anyway, I've reported the issue to Sony who are 'looking into it' so we'll see how that goes.

I do agree that the brightness is less than the previous models of the Z, but I don't think there is a screen on the market that competes with this screen besides the MBP retina. It's still a beautiful screen, so you can't really say you can see the difference in quality putting it next to a "decent" screen...that's being very harsh on the screen of the Z3.

I did a comparison between my Vaio TZ 1366x768 11.1 screen and my SVZ at full brightness inside my walk-in closet pitch black. The TZ is much brighter.Indeed the screen of the SVZ would need to kick a notch ..a BAM.. to be what others are expecting.I myself think it is fine..

Brightness is not the main issue here. From my point of view the real issue is the color-purity errors. Gray dialog boxes shouldn't be 'pinkish' on the SVZ compared to Z2. Please let us know in case you manage to get a reasonable answer from Sony.

Yeah, I agree that the colour issues take precedence over the brightness, although I'm disappointed about both.

No news from Sony yet, but will definitely keep you informed.

I have my battery effective like 80% still after nearly 4 years. I bought my (now old) VAIO VGN-Z26MN (then new) on 21st of Feb, 2009 and its battery is still keeping a fine charge. What I do is I usually have the battery on 50% or 80% percent of charge throughout the month and I do discharge and recharge it completely a few times (0% -> 100% and vice-versa) per month, then back again leave it on 50% or 80%. This is how you can greatly improve your battery life.

For those who was interested about memory in new SVZ, it is not soldered. It is removable, but it has Sony's own format.
Also, US model doesn't have WWAN slot and SIM holder.

I have a question to the people with PMD:
Is there a way to prevent your laptop from freezing when the PMD is improperly disconnected?
For example, If I was doing work on my laptop with my PMD connected and all of a sudden a blackout hits and the PMD powers off.
My laptop would also freeze due to the fact that the display(of the PMD) was improperly disconnected.
Any way to prevent the freezing (revert back to the Intel display) so I don't lose my work the next time?

You are right. Photos above prove this. Sony uses Samsung memory ICs, but in their own form factor (not sodimm)
    ICs are k4b2g0846d .

Memory modules in this lot are generic so-dimm. They will not fit SVZ and VPCZ. Probably seller made a mistake in the lot description.

Created UB recovery media. How do I boot from it to delete recovery partition?

Set BIOS to start from external media first, restarted, chose VAIO Rescue, but when I use advanced recovery the option to delete recovery partition is not there. Only the 3 options available when using the recovery area to boot up.

Would it be ok to just delete recovery area partition and then boot from recovery media and resotre everything without recreating recovery partition?

seems whenever i type on this laptop, the cursor moves to a different random location and i end up typing somewhere else. has anyone experienced this? it seems to happen very often for me and i can't pinpoint what it is. i thought maybe it's my thumb rubbing on the touchpad but i can't seem to reproduce the same problem consciously.

    any thoughts? thanks!

You are just touching touchpad while typing. That is usual problem for all laptops with touchpads. I guess you moved from trackpoint laptop (lenovo?) to SVZ? ;)

thanks. i think it's from my right thumb that keeps touching the scrolling part of the touchpad (on the right side of it). is there any way to disable the scrolling part of the touchpad?

btw, i never owned a lenovo/ibm and i can't understand how anyone can get use to those trackpoint. my previous laptop was actually a Vaio sz340 but i've never had this issue before with any laptop i've ever owned.

Well, just went to standard route and simply used partition manager and deleted the stupid recovery partition and rapid wake partition. It was easy and because SSD is so fast, applied all the changes very quickly. No I have a 350MB partition and C and D ones.

What do you mean by SEFP drivers, which drivers are these? My new VAIO Z just arrived to my country, picking it up tomorrow, has Win7 Ult, want to install Win8 PRO instead, but I'm not sure everything will work. BTW it also has PMD, has anyone succeeded in getting it to work on Win8? Thanks!

These are files for Sony Extension Firmware Parser, somthing that communicate with some hardware stuff I guess. Sony provides 2 files for this : One .exe et one .zip with some .inf files, you have to install them both and then install VAIO Control Center.

Sony : Mises à jour pour SVZ1311C5E | Télécharger des mises à jour pour SVZ1311C5E and Sony : Mises à jour pour SVZ1311C5E | Télécharger des mises à jour pour SVZ1311C5E

These are from SVZ1311C5E model, but should work with others SVZ.

Concerning PMD, actually, according to what i'm reading on the internet, it works while you don't disconnect it with your machine powered on. You have to turn off the laptop to connect/diconnect it.

I want to add, that if you make clean install of Win 8 you have to install video drivers from Win 7. Manually. They are different from generic Intel's because of hybrid video. And also this driver conrols fn keys.
    So, solution:
    1. SEFP
    2. Vaio Control Center
    3. Hybrid Video Driver

    Not sure, but probably necessary:
    1. Sony Shared Library
    2. Vaio Care

Anyway, I have no OSD on fn keys (except windows 8 standard volume control osd)

You are right, Shared Lubraries are mandatory. And for Hybrid video drivers, personally, I don't have the PMD so I just installed the Intel official one.

After that, I have Sony's Fn key OSD in desktop mode, and nothing in Metro mode, but it works.

Intel official doesn't work with fn-shortcuts for me. I'm not at home for more than three months,so for now I don't need hybrid drivers, but without it I can't change brightness.
I hope that Sony will fix PMD connection by the time I return :)

    Thanks.

I installed many of the following: Sony : SVZ1311C5E updates | Download updates for SVZ1311C5E

The thing is, on my old Z I was able to stop battery charge when it reached level 50% or 80% now I simpy can't see this option. With what software can this be fixed? BTW I have VAIO Control Center installed.

EDIT: Fixed. Sony Shared Library was missing.

I managed to fix the battery saver thing. Now, I see that Win 8 PRO is not that pro after all - News tile for example, it did show content, and on click News opened, now it doesn't open any more. Same with Videos, simply does not open.

Did somebody else experience the same problems?
