Hi boys, probably this has been discussed before but i cant find anything usefull online. Bought a replacement battery for my AW31s laptop. Battery icon says "plugged in, not charging". And the battery is not charging. Of course it is a cheap battery from some ebay seller in Germany. Any chance to get it work? Thanks.

Hi. The battery came alone. NO Bios CD. Also I read that some people killed their Vaio when flashing the Bios for nongenuine battery to work. Maybe I´ll return the battery to the seller or is there some better safe way to make it work? Thanks

    Hay GalaxySII

Just joined upon seeing this thread and iv learned more about my laptop than i did just looking through Google. I currently own the model VGN-AW31ZJ/B.
I had a much better model which let me have two HDD and came with that finger scanner, but the model i now have only lets me have one HDD and no scanner :(. I took the time to read how the CPU can be upgraded to a X9100 (I currently have a T9600) and have two HDD by buying that duel sata connector.

My question is if you know it or if anyone else does its this. are all the AW motherboards the same or not as i keep finding the same ones every time i search Google. I ask because id rather be able to populate both of my HDD spaces if possible before resorting to that double HDD connector.

Sorry if my text layout or comment itself is nothing but bad, i normally end up finding the answers myself but my laptop just has be stumped

there are 3 types of AW series motherboards

yours is mid assy there is low assy and high assy
yes u can upgrade to x9100 c2d extreme
yes u can have dual connector but u'll have to buy 1.8'' HDDs or SSDs
by installing dual connector u ll have 3 drives two on right and one on the left..
u can have even four .. by removing BD-ROM and installing optibay with an SSD ..
    u can upgrade to 8GB (2x4GB 800Mhz) expensive ..

    thanks GalaxySII

one more thing i would like to ask if you know it.

1, are the low /mid/ high rated on what Sony gives you or is it also to what motherboard they have ?
2, if all AW motherboards are the same could i technically add all the missing features
3, if the motherboards are different, which AW models are in the high end second as i would try to find the motherboard from those models and get a mate to put it all together

1.Low Assy is motherboard equipped with low end gpu it is GeForce 9300M GT with 256 MB memory on board
Mid Assy is motherboard equipped with great gpu it is GeForce 9600M GT with 512 MB memory on board
High Assy is motherboard equipped with same gpu it is GForce 9600 M GT with 512 MB memory on board and + motherboard has enhanced chipset so it supports RAID 0 feature !
    2. u oviously cant upgrade GPU u cant make it RAID capable ..
    3. her eis best MB with RAID feature! : sony vaio vgn-aw motherboard A1563296A mbx-194 fully tested supports RAID ref92 | eBay

make sure to ask seller THAT DEFO THAT motherboard DOES REALLY HAVE RAID feature !

to get it all together will cost more than find whole aw

Thanks i will make sure to ask the seller about the raid. hopefully i can take all of your advice and do the following

    2x 500GB SSD in raid 0 with 1 500GB HDD for storage
    8GB DDR2
    intel X9100

obviously i could just buy a new AW or a better laptop but i honestly see nothing better than the AW series. love the big screen and bluray player. make what i got last me for as long as possible.

Exactly that is why I have it..
I have cpu p9700 that is enough it is only 28 Watts..
4gb ram 800 and 2xcrucial m4 128gb sata 3 it perform still better than sata 2 even when this laptop supports sata 2
I can still play games well for example dead space 3 runs very well plus sims 3 too
So u gonna buy 2x500 GB SSDs? huh that will be expensive n?
You coud buy 1TB of storage i have samsung 9mm for 50 quid

EDIT : And ; There is another experiment what I want to do
This laptop has 2x msata slots but one is for wi-fi and second was for tv card .. but obviously i removed card as i dont need to watch freeview.. and i will be buying 2x msata ssds probably crucial m4 and will be installing into those two msata slots and maybe i will be able to make ultrafast RAD 0 from it :D ..
Imagine u can actually put six storage drives into this brill laptop!
but i think raid wont be possible.. but one msata might be enough at least 256 gb crucial ssd
cheapest is for 145 pounds on ebay..

    Hi There,

I've got a AW21XY and 2 things are bothering me right now:

    1) Battery won't charge anymore. During windows startup it seems the battery logo is animated, but once windows has started the logo (a battery) is freezed. It says "plugged, charging" but battery is 17% only. Battery has always been problematic for me, as the computer would last 10 minutes or so only on the battery and then shut down roughly without even go down to sleeping mode. Then, starting on a Linux Live CD (for instance) does not give me any battery charge more. Even when the computer is off, battery does not charge.

    2) Computer heats a lot. I dismantled several times the cooling system, cleaned, verified proper contact with the rad/heatpipe assembly, added thermal compound (Noctua brand), but still, near the palm rest it is sometimes so hot that it gets annoying. I thought I might have to purchase thermal pads for the memory chips as they start to get old. Or maybe I should bend the heatpipes slightly but I think it is risky...

    3) Any advice on the best possible upgrade I can take for this PC? I was thinking going to 8gb RAM and replace the SSDs. Raid 0 over 2x64gb SSD is actually not useful if I read things correctly, but a brand new SSD would show improved performances?

Thanks a lot for your support on these topics,

    Best regards

Hi let the professional (ME) :D help you

    1) If the battery won't charge anymore u should consider replacing .. or I can suggest you buy external charger and try charging that way and see if batt. is charged..
External Battery Charger for Sony Vaio VGN-FW series battery
Amazon.com: Dekcell External Battery Charger for Sony VAIO VGN: Electronics
    External Laptop Battery Charger for Sony VGP-BPS21A/B, VPC-Y11AVJ, VAIO VPC-F, VGN-S, VGN-Y, VGN-B, VGN-AW, VGN-CS, VGN-BZ, VPCF, VPCS, VPCY Series
Sony vaio external battery charger - TheFind
if u DEFO think that battery is OK not damaged or OLD .. Thing is u might damage something when u been disassembling laptop YES ? NO?

    2) If it is hot u definitely damaged heatsink .. it completely doesnt matter what compound u use.. i have arctic and it is fine. .. i have cooling pads on memory chips u dont need put compound on them .. didnt u forget to connect fan to the motherboard ? after putting back together?

3)You have almost same machine as I have so if u never upgraded it is DEFO recommended that u upgrade !
    CPU : up to C2D X9100
RAM : up to 8GB RAM 800MHz (expensive)
SSD: DEFO upgrade speeds up system 50% up (u have RAID support as I have so u can install up to 4 SSDs and have dual RAID 0 as me.
OS : Win 8 Pro recommended

    Thanks M. Professional :D

    1) I don't think I damaged anything actually. I think it started after a crash while on the battery, where the computer did actually shut down completely and suddenly and not going to sleep.

    2) I don't think I damaged anything, I've been pretty cautious with the heatsink. Actually I started dismantling it because it started to get really hot, so it has nothing to do with me disassembling the heatsink. There is no dust in the rad, I'm just thinking that maybe the heatsink of the GPU did slip somehow and should be retightened. But it does not help. I will look for replacing the thermal pads of the memory chips.

    3) I could not find any µsata drives in France. It seems I should go to msata and replace the caddy by purchasing two parts, but the kit is 170$ on ebay, which is far too much for me. I think I'll stick with my old SSDs then.

Thanks for your support on all this.

Hi from the new owner of (not so new) AW11XU. Could I ask what is the current status of the Win8 64 pro drivers support. I did read most of the forum, but I am still struggling with the following five:
    1. Fingerprint support - as was mentioned before native Windows application redirects to a missing page on authentec page. I cannot find the authentec 2012 Protection Suite quoted elsewhere either. The driver seems to work, windows detect biometric device, but there is no way of actually using it.
    2. A313 DVB-T TV tuner - I have drivers for win7 from the page, but the system does not recognise them as suitable for "multimedia video controller", even though Device ID matches the .inf files.
    3. MS driver - windows found the link to the US support page, the drivers install, but the yellow triangle has not disappeared (not a biggie, since I own one MS card only, which can be read by an old PSP)
    4. WinDVD - I am using the original drivers, but after installing the original WinDVD BD for Vaio (from US support page) and updating it with the 2012 patch, the program fails to even start.
    5. Using a CD requires double clicking the BD drive icon in the explorer first. Kind of weird...

    Has anyone solved the above?

    Thank you,
Unfortunately, neither of the above works:
    1. As I indicated, fingerprint reader driver does not seem to be a problem. But Windows 8 apparently needs 3rd party software to use it. UPEK Protector Suite 2009 is incompatible with windows 8. Apparently, PS 2012 does work, but since Authentec was taken over by the Apple behemoth, they have taken down the software from their page. Does anyone have the Protector Suite 2012?
    2. Nope, not this one. The device in question is PCI\VEN_1033&DEV_0165&SUBSYS_65061461&REV_0B. I do have inf file for it, but windows 8 does not recognise the files, not quite sure why. Sony : VGN-AW11XU/Q updates | Download updates for VGN AW11XU Q | VGNAW11XUQ
    3. SD was working out of the box. Memory stick installs but does not make it work (same as the file windows is pointing to by itself).
    4. Same problem with this version - WinDVD does not even start (no error message, nothing).
    5. Hmm, it's not that it does not autostart (Microsoft turned it off with a security update during XP SP3 times), but that I need to doubleclick in order to actually instert the CD!

I am not exactly new to os installs, as I have been installing windows since 3.0, various flavours of linuxes, and did five Win7 / Win8 fresh reinstalls on various machines in the past month. That includes four absolete (non Win8 supported) ones, including a Northwood P4 with an AGP Nvidia FX. While I got to know its internals pretty well (solved terrible overheating issues), I do admit I am new to Vaio AW, and have no doubt someone with your experience could help me out even without me sending over the machine...

Does Protector Suite you pointed to work for you in Windows 8? It has been reported numerous times that the proper procedure is to install UPEK® Protector Suite QL™ (to get the license), ignore the non-compatibility error, then install Protector Suite 2012 from the authentec site (see eg. discussion in this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/693885-vpc-z1-windows-8-a.html ). The trouble is that Protector Suite is no longer available for download.

The link you provided concerns different TV tuner. The one I have is not AVerMedia® H826D USB Pure ATSC/QAM, it is AVerMedia A313 DVB-T. Is it the latter the one you have? It is on PCI bus, not USB, so it would be really odd if the ones you quoted did work (but I did try nevertheless). "Proper" drivers for Windows 7 are available here: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/Original/TV_Tuner_Card_A313_Driver_E_1.1_1.1.0.30_WHQL.zip , but the installer stops in the middle (regardless of compatibility mode), while manually installing .inf files fails. "Could not find drivers for your hardware". 32/64bit issue?, Win 8 explicitly blocked? The latter would produce different error message, I'd think, then it would be just a question of hacking the inf to allow for win8 install.

I am happy everything works for you, but I do not think either of the above is specific to my install of Windows 8, as I have found references to the abovementioned trouble in the past.

Memorystick driver has been reported to work, but it is a minor thing for me (SD and Compact Flash are more important and both work well).

WinDVD I will keep trying with various versions (eg the link you pointed to does not install the windvd.exe at all, it is just an upgrade). Also, looking at your double Raid0 config, I doubt you use WinDVD or BD drive, currently :).

What should make it easier is that I have not been installing anything on it yet, even Nvidia drivers are stock from Sony drivers page (8.15.11.8640_0910130).

U should experiment windows 8 is new and soft is old and designed for vista ..
u should do right click on suite select compatibility win 7 or vista ..

if i gave u wrong link for aver media sorry ,.. u should look more i gave u link there are other models .. i think i picked different one check vaio aw290 .. u need research not wait someone will bring it to you under nose ;-)
here it is the proper one :
    Sony eSupport - VGN-AW290 - Drivers & Software

yeah i removed bd rom but still i have power dvd 13 installed am using files and usb 3.0 flash drives no ancient plastic tacky discs .. it reminds me early 90's :D

no best nvidia drivers are 310.90 u need specific inf and disable driiver sig in windows to get them installed .. ;)

Hi guys, I have the Vaio VGN-AW11Z/B with 4GB RAM bought back in 2009. Now I think it's time for a memory upgrade. Does this beast take 2x8GB DDR3 sticks for a total of 16GB RAM? Anyone ever tried it?

Man, I have no problems with downloading and finding various drivers. I can use google, I really did my legwork. I had checked the one from AW290 long time ago. It is analog, not DVB-T, and either way, it won't remove the exclamation mark, even in compatibility mode. I do have the message under the action flag:
Your TV Tuner has stopped working properly because a compatible driver isn't available for this version of Windows.
The model name of your TV Tuner is AVerMedia DVB-T\ISDB-T series. This device is distributed by many different PC manufacturers.

    My questions still stand:
Does anyone actually have the Avermedia A313 tuner working under Windows 8? Should the available drivers be extracted and modded in some way? How?
Does anyone have the fingerprint system working under Windows 8 without access to 2012 version of the Protector Suite (which has been taken down from the web). Or can someone help me out with getting Protector Suite 2012?

Hi, just found this group, wonderful ! My VGN-AW47GH still has the original setup of two 500 GB Toshiba drives in RAID 0 with Intel Matrix manager. It has been throwing up errors on one drive for a while, but hasn't actually failed yet. I'm thinking of starting from scratch with one SSD for a boot drive and a larger fast HDD for storage, non raid. I'd do a fresh instal of Win7 64 Ultimate.
If I just pull out the old drives, and first install the SSD to reinstall Win7 on, do I need to disable RAID in BIOS first? I have all the relevant drivers downloaded. Are there any issues with the specs of replacement drives? From what i gather these use SATA2 but most new drives are SATA3, is that a problem?
I'd really appreciate any tips or experiences from others who have been through this. I've searched the threads and found bits of helpful info but couldn't find much about a clean instal on new drives. Thanks a lot, Bill

    Hi
I suggest you to buy nice 2x SSD and U can buy 1TB HDD stick it in enclosure and have it as EXTERNAL storage .. ,. and keep your Vaio AW fast ..
No u do not need to go bios make backup of your files into THAT 1TB external storage ..(if u decide buy ) remove OLD slow HDDs and replace it with nice new SSDs (recomending crucial m4 2x128 GB) and u will be set ..

Hay Everyone wondering if anyone had any info to help me with my perfectionist Sony Aw problem. i currently own a the VGN-AW31ZJ/B but as i said in a older post its broken. I have been told by the people doing the repair work on it that they have gown through 3 screens so far and my laptop is refusing to post any kind of display so i am worried that this may be a motherboard problem or the connection between motherboard and screen.

So in the unlikely event that the motherboard is to blame iv decided to just scrap it an aim to change my AW31ZJ/B into a AW41XH/Q, now here is what i have found so far
    1, Intel X9100 cpu ( upgrade )
    2, the motherboard from a AW41XH/Q
3, Media panel with finger print scanner included ^^
4, Duel HDD/SSD connector to have 3 in total

Now i just stumbled on a thread on AW series where it was said the AW41XH/Q used the Samsung LTN184HT02 screen am I correct in this ? also does anyone know where i can find one of these as the screen is supposed to be matte but everywhere i go its listed as glossy does that even make a difference ?

one tiny problem is that regardless of what windows OS i have the BIOS will always show the OS it was pre-installed with so either Vista or 7. Is there any way to edit the Sony BIOS at all or am i just gonna have to suck it up and live with it ??

    Any help welcome ^^

Hi, it is some time I don't write in this thread...
I have an AW11S and it is some time that I'm experiencing some problem with the keyboard. There are a couple of keys that are not working properly, I press the key but the letter does not appear.
I have tried to buy the replacement keys but the problem still exists, so I don't think it is mechanical -at least, not on the outer side. Do you have any idea of what I could try, before buying a new keyboard of course? There have been no accidents like water or liquids spilling on the keyboard, of course. The laptop is still working like a charm and with the SSD is faster than any new laptop I have seen, so I would hate to change it because of the keyboard...

Hi, I'm trying to replace the DC in socket on the right hand side of an AW11S. I've got as far as taking the back off and removing the screw that holds the cylinder that contains the socket. Now that it is loose and I'm able to wiggle it, I can't seem to get it off. I am too frightened to force it as common sense keeps niggling me that it should be easy.

Please help as a search of the forum has revealed others with similar issues but I could not find the solution.

    Hi
    yes this repair is tricky
you have to becareful because that DC jack is like inserted into metal which holds it
If you have new jack purchased already .. you have to unscrew that one screw and try break JUST plastic button cover or cut it or there is posibility to pull it out just that rounded plastic and dc jack might stay in place am not sure .. but be careful!

Hello to all those who after all this time still own Sony Vaio 18.4 laptops.

Mine is the UK variant: VAIO AW11XU/Q 2.8Ghz 4GB RAM 128GB SSD 500GB HDD GeForce 9600 XBlack LCD with 3 chip LED 1920 X 1080 matt screen Blu-ray play/write and much more!

I have only owned this one and after four years still use it everyday. I estimate approx 8,000 hours of use in total. Other than the normal foibles of this series such as the leather palm rest lifting a little bit, the space bar not that sensitive at its right extremity and paint coming off the front lip section of the cover, I have never had any hardware problems and very few software problems which couldn’t be resolved by doing a complete PC restore from various restore images I have made along the way.

(By the way if you have not already figured it, you MUST make PC restore images of the complete laptop every few months so that you can reverse if you have any software problems. This will solve ALL system and other software problems. I'm still running on 10 out of 10 on System Reliability and Performance Monitor!!!)

Bottom line, this is the best piece of technology I have ever owned. I use it for every aspect of my life and although some day hopefully well into the future I will have to replace it, with what I don’t know.

I have not upgraded it, everything is completely original and it still runs on Vista. It remains blistering quick with lightening fast start up and shut down times with all essential software on the SSD and only my personal files such as photo library, music etc on the HDD.

It multi tasks all my software including Microsoft Office, Internet, high res photo software, music etc as fast as ever. I have had no need to upgrade anything at all. Why some felt that to be necessary, I don’t know.

I have read all the posts on this thread about overheating etc. Mine runs very cool with very little warm air coming out of the grille in normal use. It only heats up when I use graphic intensive processes like opening up many high res photos in quick succession. In normal use, no issues. The CPU does not produce much heat, it appears to be the graphics card which produces any noticeable heat.

I have just cancelled my warranty which I had through PC World after four years of not needing it. My logic there is that PC world would nowadays have little knowledge of how to repair it and they don’t have anything with which to replace it for me should anything go wrong.

Warranty gone, I thought it was time today to open up the laptop for the first time, with the excuse of cleaning out the dust. I imagined that after four years of intensive daily use there must be lots of dust inside.

Well after removing the SSD and HDD with their cover and a total of (I think) 28 screws, I found very little dust inside, it was not worth trouble. There were only mild light brown deposits on the fan blades which I brushed off with the bristles of a fine long-haired artists brush and sucked away carefully with a vacuum cleaner (without holding the pipe too close to the laptop). I brushed the whole inside anyway using this method, even though there was negligible dust, had a good look round, took a few high res photos of the inside and reassembled everything.

All is still working 100% after this venture into the unkown for me.

I wonder if I will get another 4 years! Everything was still shinning new inside, at least I know how to open it now should I need to replace anything. The SSD and HDD are very easy to remove/change, you could almost do that with your eyes closed.

I would not sell this laptop even for the amount I paid 4 years ago: £2299.99 !!!

Well done SONY, I love you!!!
