Official Sony Vaio CW Core 2 Duo Series Owner's Thread

I haven't seen any lines that you are describing..the only thing I've seen is the blacks not being very black, which I mentioned in another post.

Anybody have temp numbers for cpu and gpu at full song? I'm debating on going with the alienware m15x since I'm being impatient.

 

The last time i saw such lines on my HP was when a single row of pixels running horizontally across the screen went bad. I did not notice it untill i acidentally changed my background to darker colors. The tech support told me that it could happen when one of the three color combinations that make each pixel is not behaving properly to make dark colors. They finally repaired it though as my laptop was still in warranty.

 

I'd say no as far as a bottleneck with the p7450...but if you did find it was, you could always upgrade the processor at a later date. Right now I don't believe there is anywhere to get your hands on a CW with a GT230 and a P8700...Sonystyle actually pulled the choice of adding a GT230 to the customize CW.

$900 is the price I've seen over the last month for that config...it might be hard to find it any cheaper, and actually there is a chance (I'm guessing) that since the CW with the GT230 is no longer available at Sonystyle.com, that it could also sell out everywhere else, especially with all the orders that Sony cancelled.

 

Alright I think I am going to order it. Do you think it's better to order one
directly through Sony or does it not matter? And is J&R a good site? I've
never gone through them before. Also, would J&R price match Sony?

 

forget sonystyle website, they are SO BAD. i talked to a guy on customer support and he said it is TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK but my shipping date still says 12/15, and can have a chance of being delayed even more. I'm going to cancel this tonight if i don't get any emails before i do. Just going to order the Newegg's T6600 w/ GT230m... i can't believe many people who ordered later than i did (i ordered early morning 11/27) have already gotten a production email when I haven't gotten anything. I'd rather have it in 3 days rather than wondering when I will ever get it. BTW, congrats to all who go the production email and those who received their laptops.

 

glad to see some people who ordered it the 27th with blu ray and the gt230m finally got production email...hopefully mine will be soon since thats the same day and specs i ordered

 

anyone know how the heck to update the sony vaio software or to even use the mouse? like in the video. also anyone got that link of that video where that guy is standing up in front explaining what it can do and stuff. i cant find it

I ordered a jet black one on Nov. 27 at around 9 a.m. Last week, I was told it was scheduled to arrive tomorrow, but my shipping status still says Nov. 30, and have received no emails -- no build emails, but also no cancellation emails.

I'm taking the silence as somewhat positive, but have gone back to reading laptop reviews in case it gets cancelled, in which case I would buy from a different company.

I ordered mine evening 29th, indigo, the shipping date was originally scheduled for Dec. 11th, but then moved to the 21st.

But then this morning I got an email that said it was in production, and 5 minutes ago I got an email that it was shipped. Yay!

But yeah, strange. So I guess those who got indigo on the 29th are in luck?

Incidentally, how do I track my order? I got a tracking number but I don't know what company it is for. I just got regular ground shipping.

This laptop has a Motion Eye 0.3 Megapixel Camera

 

i have received my CW, and i must tell you not to expect too much from this camera, one of the things i really disliked about my CW is its webcam. even my acer 1410 has a better webcam. don't know whether any sort of tweaking will give rise to a better picture, any comments folks?
really wonder how sony can make such a disappointing camera!

No luck here. Ordered our Indigo the 29th a little before 8:00pm EST and still nothing. Our original ship date was Dec. 08 and now it is Dec. 22. No email, no update on the SonyStyle site (except for the shipping date which changed as soon as we placed the order).

With the current posts I was expecting to see some email from them by now. Oh well we are in no hurry, my old Gateway laptop is still chugging along.

 

Update : I cancelled my order. I felt the screen was a disappointment in my eyes. I looked at a CW at BB for an hour and compared it to the SR and the NW series sitting right next to it and in my eyes the CW just didn't seem right. There is probably some bias here as I do own the AW190 with its full HD screen and my new Z820. But, the CW was going to be a gift for my gf and I know she would have been disappointed in the screen as well. So, I ordered her the SR590CTO in alpine white spec'd almost the same as the CW I just cancelled but with the ATI Radeon 4570 graphics card. Happy holidays everyone.

 

Well spent some time playing with my fiance's CW. Uninstalled some programs. Installed a couple others. Installed Office 2007 Home and Student. Burned 2 recovery DVDs. Right now it's running a full system backup to a network drive and installing windows updates for Microsoft Office. Also transferred her files from her old laptop. Will probably install some AV software sometime tonight still.

Really not all that much bloatware installed on the computer. I did select the 'Fresh Start' option too. I was suprised that Google Chrome was installed, along with the Google toolbar for IE. I uninstalled Chrome and IE, and am using Firefox instead.

Really impressed with the computer so far. They keyboard is very nice. For the people that are complaining about the screen and viewing angles, its really not that bad. I don't expect much from a laptop screen I guess.

I'll have a couple hours tomorrow night probably and lots of time this weekend to play around with it. I'll post some pictures then and maybe write some more opinions about the computer. I also want to install 3dMark06 and see what kind of numbers it generates.

 

I do see where you are coming from here. My old laptop was a gaming laptop with the glossy screen running at 1900x1200. This laptop will have a lot lower resolution than I like, but as long as it performs well I'll be happy. Plus, I really like the size of the computer. I wouldn't want anything bigger.

ok, i saw a late post on this thread saying .3 megapixel and some review posted here were .3 also which does seem VERY low. but on some retailer sites it says 1.3 MP. i cant provide the sources because im on my iphone right now so im confused.

Someone asked when I ordered from Sonystyle.com because it was cancelled, it was late on 30th. November.

A few more comments on the display:

It does help a little to adjust the colors on the Sony CW but it will help not help the relatively poor black levels on this display. The display on this CW notebook is good for working on because you seldom have a black background, but not for watching DVD/video. If you want to watch movies, hook it up to an external display over HDMI or VGA.

The restricted viewing angles are probably not an issue for most people that just browse, write documents and play a few games. However, it is not the notebook to get if you want to do graphics/photo manipulation, especially not if you sit in front of it for long hours, because then the restricted viewing angles will begin to annoy you as you shift around in your chair to feel comfortable.

Although the the poor black levels and the restricted viewing angles on this Vaio CW display can be justly criticized, the sharpness is very good (for instance, text is easy to read) and the reflections on the glossy screen are not as bad others I've seen.

I thought it might be the router, but I saw the connection drop at my school, and at home (set my home router for mixed b/g/n).

After the update, its going good, and I totally agree, the speeds i'm getting, are awesome. Definitely check out the sony support page for updates. Were you able to get the BB version, before they changed the price ($799) or after ?

Can somebody tell me how hot does it get with this configuration :

Is this sufficient for mainstream usage ( surfing webs, MS word, media, abit photoshop & illustrator, a bit sony vegas and COD MW 2 )?

i was wondering how i could make a recovery disk?
i have created a system recovery point though

 

Click on the Windows/Start button at the lower left, and under "All Programs", select "VAIO Care". The option to create the recovery disks it there, though you might want to run the other checks first.

Maybe this doesn't interest anybody but I'm curious:

How to know how fast the fan(s) is (are) spinning on CW ?
Are they regulated by the CPU/GPU load ?

I did install speedfan and although it shows perfectly different temperatures (CPU, GPU, system, ...), nothing about the fans.

I just finished testing a fairly high-intensive graphics game, at full-on settings, and set for nearly the max screen resolution. Other than not being able to run at my usual resolution, everything ran as well as on my desktop gaming system, with no hiccups or lag. (Sorry, I can't tell you the name of the game. NDA. )

The vent port for the fan did get a little warm, but nothing excessive. There was almost no additional heating evident elsewhere on the bottom or top of the machine after more than an hour of play. The vent temperature dropped very quickly once I finished with the game. This may not be as good as playing on my 24" monitor with my desktop, but I'll still at least be able to play if I'm on the road now.

Do recovery disks have to be made when you first start the computer, or can they be made later on?

 

You can choose when to burn them. It does takes about 70mins to do the 3 disk burn. Fortunately mine was delivered to work so I burnt them whilst getting on with other things

 

is there a way to disable vaio gate from loading after switching on your computer?

 

I don't have my CW yet and I was wondering when making the recovery disks what options if any do you have? Does it dump the OS AND drives AND other software that came on the PC all together or can you dump these separately? The online manual is no help. I hope you can dump them individually, especially the software so you can install what you want.

 

Can i use Dual-layer dvd's or do you have to use normal dvd-r's?

I wouldn't recommend it, I updated it with the newest driver from synaptics and although it did give me two finger scroll etc (didn't work as well as on macbook though), I had multiple BSOD in a few hours...
I restored the original driver and haven't had any BSOD since...
