Actually, I think "Royal Indigo" looks pretty good in these pictures. I wonder why it is supposed to be unpopular...Not that I am unhappy with my red CW, but hey. :D

My Royal Indigo shipped on the 11th. I ordered mine on 5 Dec so not too bad. I am stationed overseas so it will take a little bit longer.

I took a punt on a 15% off voucher on eBay (it was £10ish, so about £560 total i guess) which worked, and knocked £97 off.

Any chance you'd be willing to take some photos yourself of your Red CW? :]

I'm planning to buy one in red, but I'm not exactly sure if the color is right. Seems a bit too feminine on Sony's site :p

OK so here's my findings over the last day

Temps for the CW; It's an amazing laptop when it comes to temperature. The cpu, gpu and harddrive all idle at around 30-40 degrees. Even with the GPU overclocked to clock 500mhz, memory 816mhz, and shader-1278mhz, under load it still manages to keep it below 65c, and the p8700 never goes above 55c. :D Would i be able to overclock the 230m any more or would that be pushing it?

    tempsCW.png

As for outside case temperature, the only places that get slightly warm(and i mean just slighty ;) ), on the very front edge underneath the touchpad, and just underneath the vent. Everywhere else is room temperature feeling. The fan is VERY quiet even under load. Most of the time doing light tasks like web browsing, the fan doesnt spin.

As for the display, i think its actually quite good. It's bloody BRIGHT. Fair enough the blacks are slighty more grey than "black", but its not as bad as people make out. When i first turned it on the colours were very off, and washed out. I dunno why sony chose to use their own colour profiles because it makes the display look like crap. However once it has been tweaked it is fine.

The keyboard is great, although it takes some getting used to if you come from one that has dedicated PG up/down, home and end buttons. The touchpad is excellent. it doesnt lag, and has a nice texture, but i think the multitouch gestures are more gimmicky than useful. I just cant seem to get it to zoom in and out on pictures correctly. It'll zoom in, then you continue to zoom in further, it'll zoom out. annoying. Maybe i'm not doing it right :p Good thing the side scrolling still works :D

The pictures on the internet make it look really really chunky. Well it isnt :D It's actually fairly slim. It's quite big at the back, but its no bigger than standard 15.4inch laptops at the back.

The jet black looks great. My only gripe is that ive got minor sratches from cleaning the palm rest... with a microfibre cloth... it scatches too easily.

The only thing i have found quite a dissappointment are the speakers; they're not horrible, but they just lack oooomph. There isn't even just a hint of ooomph. theyre all "voice" and no bass. However they wouldnt have stopped me buying this laptop though, i use headphones 99% of the time anyway. I suppose they are ok for youtube or casual music listening.

When i first turned it on, there was ALOT of stuff installed: About 100 programs, 27 of which fall under the name VAIO  . It made it slow at first, but ive only removed about 10 and it seems to have speeded it up quite alot :D. I also changed most of the VAIO services to start manually and not automatically. So its fast, but only when it has been tweaked and sorted :D

I know it's only the bios, but there is nothing to change at all. The only things you can change are a password, date and time, virtualisation, boot order and the save/exit things. It would have been nice to have a bit more.

I'll post some pictures later ;) I havent got a camera at the moment

You should be fine with the core at 550-575 and memory at 900. Your shaders is about the same as mine. But YMMV.

I'm debating weather to wait and see if sony gets more parts in for the blue ray player and the gt 230m and jet black and use my coupon, or buy the FX18 for $899 from amazon now. For all I know sony will not have any parts in stock for another month or so. And by then the coupon will expire. If I got the Fx18 it comes with the P7450 how easy is that to overclocked to say 2.2 or so?

    Goto this location C:\Users\ ???????\AppData\Local\NVIDIA Corporation\nTune\Profiles

"replace ????? with your windows account name"

Then open "osbootpf.nsu" in notepad and change the GPUMEMMHZ0 to 900 then save and reboot.

Next time you open the nvidia control panel it should say 900. if you want it higher just change it again the same way

    Hey Guys,

I've been trying to get my hands on an affordable laptop that fits my needs. I know, who isnt?

Anyway, I've been pretty excited about the value in the CW190x and I even went so far as to check it out at my local Best Buy this morning. I must say, it's a nice little machine.

My only remaining questions before I can slap down any cash for this thing are...

    1) What is the deal with the battery leakage thing? Some people have been saying that even when the machine is powered off, the battery drains. Is that an issue that everyone is experiencing? If so, is there usually a fix for these kinds of things?

    2) I've also read that you apparently can't change the VT settings in the bios if you buy a pre-built model with a T6600 (or lower) processor? Is this true? Since I'm planning on upgrading my processor after the purchase, has anyone found a way to "hack" or update the bios to enable this feature?

Thanks for everything you've reported thus far -- it really does make the hunting a bit easier.

ok so my system just crashed... (this was before changing what you said to 900 ;)). at the first the screen like froze, but the music was playing still... just very very slow, and then i got a bluescreen. when i booted my cw back up i got a message in the action center saying that the GPU had crashed, it had the same timestamp as the current time though and not a few minutes ago...

so was this due to overclocking or was it a unrelated system crash?

I would back off the overclocks a bit and test out the system on a game to see if its stable.

What are your clocks set at before the crash?

Just wondering, why would someone want to do this? Sounds like this would be useful when I'm editing film projects. But would it be worth the cost?

Also, someone asked about overclocking the cpu? I have a p7450, while I'm told its sufficient for most of my needs, I wonder if I could overclock that when editing. Is that possible/safe?

Wish I could answer the questions for ya, I'm pretty sure the T6600 cannot "do" VT though.

    Piggybacking of these questions:
    1) Could the battery drain have something to do with the wireless/bluetooth being on? (I'm not computer shmart, so that might be a dumb question) It seems like something the operating system is doing to "help" us might be using battery to do so. Maybe.

    2)Can the P7450 do VT?

One more thing, does anyone know where I could find a nice (stylish) sleeve that would fit the CW? I'm deathly afraid of pulling it out of my satchel ("not a purse!") and finding it all scratched up.

1- as others have said in reply to the battery drain, sometimes its mostlikely the reading on windows that turns out to be wrong, because when you shut down your laptop at 100% battery and turn it on the next day with 92% or someting similar then you will notice that the marker will stay at 92% longer than it should some say for about 20mins or so. This shows that a good amount of blame can be put towards the windows reading being wrong.

Another things is that yes theses things do get fixed after time via updates from sony, most likely a bios update but sometimes its other things, we will just have to wait for an update and find out.

2- yes its true that VT is not available on the T6600 CPU or the P7450, only on the P8700 and T9600 from the options that are available from Sony, plus you will need Win7 Professional to have that activated as wel. if you upgrade your CPU that is VT compatible then it will be updated in your bios im guessing, but make sure you have both a VT compatible processor and Win7 Pro to get VT working.

they were set at: 575mhz clock, 816mhz memory, and 1276mhz shader... ive toned the clock and shader down a little to 550 and 1100

but WOW the performance for a 14inch laptop.... amazing :D

if i post a list of programs installed, would someone be willing to tell me what isnt nessessary? i'm not sure what half of the sony ones even do :p

I do it to gain more performance in games, Certain games will run 15-25% faster for free when overclocked to the stable limit. So demanding games should go from laggy to smooth at the same settings.

On this particular laptop heat is never a factor for me in overclocking because the GPU never gets above 65C when OCed

Agreed with that. I can remember getting less performance on my £2000 Dell gaming laptop 2 years ago. Technology is moving so fast!

To think the 230m equals the likes of 9700m gt, and even 8600m gt in sli, which were hardly ever(or even never) seen in small laptops. Tech moves so fast. hopefully in the near future we will see power crammed into notebooks :D

Gotta love sony like; great craftmanship, design, cooling and performance, just maybe sometimes not price :D

i got another bluescreen last night. only this time i didnt have the gpu overclocked :S i reset it to stock incase this happened again, but it still did.

i managed to get some info off the bluescreen. it was something about it was shut down because of a driver buffer overflow that could allow malicious code to be run.

is there a driver update for the 230m? i tried downloading off nvidias website but it says it isnt supported. has sony released a driver update? i cant find a newer one on the uk support website

    help appreciated :D

when do you get your BSODs?

I get them returning from sleep :(
Mine relates to an nvidia problem but I have updated to the newest drivers from sony and still get it. I wish we could use standard nvidia drivers.

Mine is overclocked (600/1320/900) but I stil get the BSOD with stock clocks.

i'm actually not sure, they are just random... but maybe it has something to do with the sleep function, as i did have it in sleep before the bsod :(

i see you have updated drivers from sony. i did this hoping it wouldnt happen again, but thats obviously a lie since it has to you :( GOD why cant nvidias be used... such a pain in the

i also cant make a recovery disk right now, since i only had 2 DVD DL disks, and it has made an error on the first one, and told me to discard it

i dont think it's a hardware error, i think it's more sony's ty drivers than anything else. i have noticed though that it never happens in games, it's only when doing light stuff. AGH. CONFUSED

Have you not got any old single layer disks? Thats what I used and it went through fine although slow!

I just burnt the disks off and put them in the CW box in case I ever sell ther laptop then installed my copy of 7 pro. Much nicer and no bloat.

I did try and install the mobile nvidia drivers and it said the device wasnt supported. I might try getting some modified drivers from laptopvideo2go to see if that solves the problem.

please report back they do work :D

i've got some single layer discs, they just don't have cases. i suppose i could use the cases off the dual-layer ones instead.

wish i had a copy of windows 7 pro, at the time when the homepremium was only £45 i ordered that, but i shud have ordered the pro for £80. the bloat on this is ridiculous but i dont fancy losing features for ther extra £50 i payed for pro.

I feel as if the bluescreen is gonna happen any second. it's ,making me weary of doing my coursework on it.... :( Does nvidia tools use specific drivers alonside the graphics drivers to change the frequencies to overclock? if it does then would it not be them causing the problem? usually if windows 7/vista has a graphics driver problem it just resets it, not cause a bluescreen

    AGH pure confused

That looks awesome. I don't really need a fingerprint reader though, it just takes up space and I am not a business person. But I wanted the CW to be in a cool matte finish...

Do you know any other places that are selling it in matte black? Or more photos?

The extra cost must be because of Win 7 Pro, finger print reader, and the business friendly matte finish. But if I was looking for a CW, I agree with falcon26 and would want the GT 230M graphics.
