you know what, since mythdat is a busy man, and me a bored college kid, i'll try your videos out. i'll edit here later when done

aarit, : it works fine on my configuration, and it is definitely smooth. forward and backward seek is absolutely instantaneous. my processor only increases by around 10-20% max. with both vlc and mpc-hc. maybe you have a codec problem, i suggest you try SPlayer and turn on GPU acceleration. in vlc and mpc, are you using internal codecs? see if dvxa is selected in mpc.

did you try with powerdvd 10?

my processor :D only increases by around 2-3% with vlc and GPU acceleration and no i am not using internal codes.

Sorry, i'm a bit confused. I understand the parts are manufactured in China, but are the laptops actually assembled in china too or shipped as a kit to somewhere more local (warehouse?) to be built?

its 99% chinese i assure you that they do everything in China, Sony just say Japan so they dont lose customers.

    @kokik

the 10-20 was an absolute guess with other stuff running in the background. but you should try using internal codecs first.(you also might wanna give the windows 7 codec pack a go)

by the way, i happen to have a 4GB Kingston RAM module and a 2GB Samsung one. Does that seem odd/a matter of concern-anyone?

I received mine today :D (It actually came yesterday but no one was home to sign for it lol)

Up to now I think it's an ace laptop, very cool looking, loving the keyboard. Haven't got any of the unusual noises that people have had so I guess I'm lucky. The bloatware wasn't as bad as I thought, a few uninstalls and msconfigs later and I've got it in a state that I'm happy with. I haven't got round to any gaming yet so can't comment on that.

So far so good, worth the wait :)

    @ian80

It's got VGA but not DVI.

    Hi all

I've decided that my 15.5" E series is just not for me, it's just a bit too large for my liking so have replaced it with a 14" notebook.

    So, I'm selling my Vaio

    quick specs:
    i5 M430 2.27Ghz
    4Gb RAM
    Blu-Ray player
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD5470
    1920x1080 Full HD Screen

It's for sale here if anybody's interested: link

I forgot how much I loved playing Burnout Paradise on the xbox before my disc was destroyed, just bought the ultimate box edition on steam, 34mins to go :D

Update: I know its a 2008 game but impressed with how the laptop breezes through it maxed, res is only 1366x768 but have 8xAA on and everything is pin sharp running a rock solid 60fps, sense of speed is brilliant with that framerate.

no offence, but i've tried a couple of games and i really dont understand how you play games at anything other than native resolution on an LCD screen, the quality really is weird....i'm playing crysis(warhead) and I can max out the settings with 1024x1000( something like that-you know which resolution I'm talking about) but it looks so weird, i'd rather play all at minimum with 1080p, does that sound wrong??

And does anyone know whether you have to access the "Turbo Boost" feature, I'm monitoring 100% CPU useage while transcoding a video and my 450m maxes at 2.4ghz. I thought it was supposed to to to 2.6? Some please answer, cause I think theres some misconfiguration on my EB. And someone please please help me with that squeal..It reminds me of an lcd inverter but I thought the screen is led, the pitch changes with adjustment in brightness settings., mythdat, could you possibly give me the page(s) on where you talked about this?

I am playing at native resolution, I went with the 1366x768 screen for exactly that reason, using anything lower than native res on a LCD always looks pretty crap and can't be fixed with anti-alaising.

I believe the turbo boost only kicks in for single core applications, I might be wrong but I could swear thats the deal, if both cores are being used then no turbo boost.

Depends on the game, I suppose - some still look great on low settings, others look like trash if you turn stuff down. Generally I prefer to play at full res with lowered settings too, but like I've mentioned before, the only game I've had to lower resolution on is GTA4, which is a poorly engineered pile of turd anyway.

What are you using to monitor your CPU speed? How many cores are loaded?

    re: the noise:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/6462144-post1177.html

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/6615593-post22.html

Basically, at the moment you have two options:

    A) Disable the cpu's power saving states and be noise-free, but in return have the CPU running full throttle all the time, producing heat and lowering battery life

    B) Keep the power saving states, have a cool and efficient laptop but put up with the noise

It's not just Sony - like I said in that first post I linked, it's a common intel issue, it can happen in laptops from any manufacturer. MacBooks in particular were notorious for it in the C2D days

Did anyone downgraded from Win7 to XP. If anyone then help me as I want to degrade and i'ts not allowing me, i think due to sata issue. I want to run an application and my 3gb is not enough for it, now if i want to upgrade then i have to take 1 gb as both slots are used which will be waste and dont want to do so, I am planning to degrade os rather tahn increasing ram.
Please let me know if any user did this in past sucessfully

Holy crap, well at least I wasted half an hour of my time. Thanks btw. 1 q. How long does your battery hold, may be weird but mine on idle with high performance setting only lasts half an hour even if windows says 2hrs 36 mins remaining?

extremly surprising! oh, and by the way, about that turbo boost thing, side bar gadgets arent the best to use i guess, cpu-z shows my x20 multiplier for 2.66ghz...about right...

on high performance, that sounds about right, your system may have a made a one time wrong result output, monitor your battery with "BatteryBar". And the multitouch on the EB is not really an ace. Dosent really work....

When Sony put up offers(they've been on a constantly putting up new offers from the start of this year) people turn into processor-sucking, blu-ray-eating, gpu-munching zombies. Stocks are out before you can blink. When it says "configuration is not available" they mean that they dont have enough candy for everyone. They just disguise it up and say that its your fault that you are a stupid idiot and dont know how to configure a laptop. But no really, they are just dead low on stock. When I saw that sony had put up offers, i sat there, oh yeah, i sat there right infront of my desktop, eyes peeled, hands ready to swipe the mouse any second.....cause i kept checking like every minute. thats how i got my laptop. And thats also how i accedentally clicked on 6gb ram and not the ati hd5650.

Alright, so I was trying to see where the whine on my laptop was coming from(before I found a resolution) and I got a little carried away and made this here. Ask me if you need the pictures- they're like at 4000x3000 each.

Sony Style UK provides one for £149. It is not very high capacity but better than the one you receive with lappie.

IMHO - it is not a good idea to use third party battery in this lovely piece of gadget. Don't risk it ;-)

CAN SOMEONE tell me which laptop has good speakers, i'm thinking of replacing the ones in my EB, since they appear to be simply glued in

yeah, the bass performance is so poor on these speakers(but i'm lovin the DOLBY ENHANCEMENTS). if you check the video link i posted a few posts above ^ i saw that the speakers are simply glued in, and all i would have to do would be to unsolder them and solder in new ones... wow, wa wa wee wa, damn, the speakers on the xps you mention are like 66 dollars...with subwoffer and everything....will have to find ones that will actually fit.

can anyone give me a guess as to how powerful stock sony eb ones are? i'd say 2 or 3 watts

Guys I have had my laptop for a few weeks now and it is amazing...only problem though is that the fan noise is beginning to irritate me a bit...its constantly ON!! (compared to my old dell which only sometimes came on) and quite loud and the cpu usage can go up to 20-30% while just surfing..if i open up like 2/3 youtube vids then cpu goes to 70-80% and fan gets very loud...did someone else have this problem and if so what did you do to resolve it...ne help would be appreciated...

Simple Steps to 'DrAsTiCaLLy' Improve Speakers on E Series

    1. Click Speakers Symbol from Control panel on right bottom side (Near System Clock) and then Click on 'Speakers' icon on Top.

    a. Go to Enhancements tab and make sure to CHECK 'Loudness Equalization' checkbox.

    b. Go to Dolby Tab and Check 'Audio Enhancer' and 'Surround Sound'

    c. Go to Advanced Tab and Select the Default Format as Last option in the Drop Down.

(Thanks to Raven for original idea)

Yipeeee .. This is my 50th Post and now I've become Notebook Guru ;-)

no prob...thoughta yall might come across it...

I do have to mention though, about a couple days ago, my sound went completely mute on my E and I went too the Realtek audio properties, Windows said that the "enhancements are causing problems for Windows" so I had to turn them off. But I did a system restore and everything's fine since then..
the internal speakers? you should try the headphone jack with a good pair of earphones...

holy hell...the internal speakers do improve too!!

Yeh I have been on the website about 100 times over the last few months building the dream laptop and lately it always seems to have some components out of stock!

They change the offer on what is upgraded for free every week too which seems to effect the price.

Hopefully I will have enough money to order one soon, will be a similar spec to yours actually.

Yup. However the fake surround effect through the int. speakers did not agree with my ears. Having the Audio enhancer on sounds better than not having it on though.

Forgot my good headphones at work so can only evaluate how it affects the speakers ^^
