Anyone install the new bios update? R1040V7?

Any problems encountered with the install?

Also I'm guessing win 8.1 will hit the msft store today, 7 am eastern, I am hoping the update will install flawlessly.

What kind of temperatures are you having*? It's puzzling me a lot that there are people, like you, and reviews, e.g. Anandtech, mentioning fan even turning off when idleing or doing light work. For me temps are almost 50C even when just browsing and that makes the fan hit 3000+ rounds!

    * e.g. HWiNFO64 can show those

I have installed it just now, it seems quieter, hopefully the performance won't be taking a larger hit.

The fan noise on my machine was nothing that would have discouraged me from keeping the device so any additional improvement upon the previous bios is a plus for me. I've never had the pitch sound for my USB suspend, but then I have a usb mouse always connected to the device, so maybe if it wasn't plugged in all the time, the noise would be present but never tested it.

As for the new wlan drivers, I'd personally wait for the windows 8.1 release before installing any 8.1 wlan drivers.

I went ahead and installed windows 8.1, took a bit longer than I expected but it installed with no issues. Everything works fine, mentions I need to reinstall some bluetooth drivers, but overall pleased with the install, the icons are a bit larger, guess this is for the touch aspect so it is easier to switch between apps and what not.

No artifacts on the video? I did a clean install of 8.1 RTM but went back to 8 until that part gets worked out. I was using the latest driver from Sony's site.

what artifacts? if you mean the video player from windows, I don't use it, I use vlc to watch all my videos. But I will say that the integrated video player has much better quality now than before.

Unless you are referring to other artifacts?

These are Windows 8.1 drivers available on Canada/US site:
    Sony eSupport - SVP132190S - Support

    Vaio Win8.1 Drivers.jpg

Take note that you must install
    1. BIOS Update utility R1040v7
    2. VAIO Update Software 6.3.1.10120
    prior to Windows 8.1 upgrade.

EDIT: Now Sony eSupport posted more drivers needed to be installed on your Windows 8 machine prior to Windows 8.1 upgrade.

My laptop has just started having this problem 12 hours ago. The laptop won't work without the power cable connected, battery says 77%. Can you let me know what the solution to this issue was?

    Reset your Battery.
Check this manual for location of the Battery off button:
    http://docs.esupport.sony.com/pc/SVP1121_1321_series/EN/contents/TP0000053407.html

    Reset the battery:
Press and hold down the(Power) button for more than four seconds and make sure the power indicator light is off. Disconnect all cables connected to your VAIO computer, such as the AC adapter, and push and hold the battery off button for three to five seconds with a thin, straight object (such as a paper clip).

Wait about five minutes and then put all cables back in place and turn on the computer again.

I was getting artifacts like when your video card is overheating after I installed the drivers on Sony's site. I did a new install and just used the drivers that Windows 8.1 installed automatically and didn't have those artifacts. I see that the US Sony site also has 8.1 drivers now.

8.1 works great. Just a couple small quirks. I'm getting a white X thru some of my browser graphics.
Could be a video card driver issue.

I updated to Windows 8.1 and it's functioning normally. Does anyone know how to shrink the icons on the desktop to it's original size(Windows 8)?

Also after updating, I'm hearing beeping/static noise? I recall that this might be from bluetooth but can anyone help? Thanks!

I hope all of you are upgrading to Windows 8.1 ASAP, it's pretty amazing! Have been a RTM user for a month now, 8.1 is the true successor to Windows 7, Windows 8 was just a blip.

But before you upgrade, do check sony.com (US) support site, they have few patches mentioned as must-have before you upgrade to 8.1. Sony has to absolutely overhaul their country-specific support websites, they are all completely outta sync with each other. Also, search this thread - I think a couple of folks have painstakingly compiled a list of drivers which work well with Windows 8.1, get them and enjoy !!

I only installed the bios update before doing the 8.1 update, had no issues. Will be installing the rest of the new drivers once I get back home.

    Bluetooth® Wireless
    Memory Card Reader/Writer
    Motherboard
    VAIO Control Center Update
    Remote Software
    Intel HD Graphics Family Update
    Sony Video Processor Update
    Wireless LAN

The vaio update was not released yet when I installed 8.1, guess that occured a bit later.

    Hi,
I just got my Vaio pro 13 yesterday. It's my first dive into windows 8. I noticed when I lightly glide my finger across the screen there is a trail mark that follows it. What could be causing this? Is the screen on my unit bad? Here is a video showing it.

    Screen trails - YouTube

and another.. Something definitly is up with my screen. Does anyone have any thoughts as to why this would happen?

It's not a problem with your screen.
You can turn off the feedback in Control Panel > Hardware > Pen and Touch; uncheck show visual feedback.

    On a tangent.
    I purchased one today.

Adaptive brightness fixed by turning off both Intel's and Vaio care's power saving.

Touchpad has no lag once all the gestures are turned off.

No wifi problems; we have crappy internet.

The only qualm i have with this unit is the fan noise.
Quite loud under light loads for my daily use (10 chrome tabs, word, media player).

Ok fudge, I can't seem to install the Bluetooth® Wireless driver, gives me a frigging error

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personal or package vendor.

    ah is this pos. arg

Next, the Sony Video Processor Update doesn't seem to work, doesn't install after extracting, hurray. And the sata driver also doesn't work, but I am not sure why, no idea if this has anything to do with the pro being PCIe, but no clue

also decided to update my wifi driver from intel's site, this time it worked. The driver from sony's website is 16.5.1.6, the intel driver is 16.5.3.6, I just checked my internet speed

much better than before on the old drivers, infact I never had above 70 for upload, so def an improvement, perhaps I will try to install the bluetooth driver from intel's site as well.

You should try accessing your product key through BIOS (on your Vaio pro). Alternatively I do believe you can access the product key using a software called wpkey. Haven't tried it myself, but supposedly this should work.

After that, when you have the key, just download the ISO ?

    Hi all,

Been visiting the site for awhile, first time posting here though, so here I go! Apologies if I mess up.

After purchasing my first Ultrabook I was pretty happy till now (minus the bluetooth connection and touchpad issues). This was my conversation with Sony Live Help just moments ago, see below if you're interested in what their customer service is like.

Long story short, it doesn't sound like Sony cares enough to issue a new bios update (at least for now, I hope) that is compatible with Win8.1. If you do run into issues by installing Win8.1 before the required BIOS update, then you'll have to rollback to Win8, install all updates and then upgrade to Win8.1 again. So far everything seems to be OK, so I'll leave things be for now.

Hi, Welcome to Sony Online Support. I’m Veronica.

    8:45 AM Veronica - (C5DW):

    8:48 AM Veronica - (C5DW):
    Hello

    8:48 AM Customer:
I don't want to brick my computer...everything seems to be working 'fine' so far after the win 8.1 update

    8:49 AM Veronica - (C5DW):
Have you install the BIOS update utility before upgrading to windows 8.1 ?

    8:50 AM Customer:
not the latest one no...BIOS Update Ver R1040V7

    8:51 AM Customer:
There was no notification from Sony that this had to be done, ie. via email, update prompt etc.

    8:51 AM Customer:
I just realized this after I upgraded to 8.1

    8:52 AM Veronica - (C5DW):
I understand your concern ,but you need to install the BIOS update utility before upgrading to windows 8.1.

    8:53 AM Veronica - (C5DW):
You may face some issues in future regarding the functionality. you may get some error code.

    8:55 AM Customer:
well, sony should have been a little bit more proactive in letting their customers know

    8:56 AM Customer:
I hope that your programmers can update the bios update utility so that it will work under win8.1. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is encountering this issue, I've seen a number of posts on the forums about this already

    8:56 AM Veronica - (C5DW):
Well I am sorry you feel that way. If you face any issue in future , then I suggest you to recover the system to windows 8. Then install all the vaio updates, windows update and BIOS update utility. Then upgrade to windows 8.1.

    8:57 AM Customer:
    that is ridiculous.

    9:00 AM Connecting...

9:00 AM Connected. A support representative will be with you shortly.

    9:00 AM Veronica - (C5DW):
Well I am sorry for inconvenience , but you need to recover to windows 8 if you face any issue.

9:00 AM Support session established with Veronica - (C5DW).

    9:03 AM Customer:
Your apologies are insufficient to solving my problem. As is your proposed solution to recover back to Win8, install updates and then upgrade to 8.1.

    9:04 AM Customer:
It's not that I'm not capable of doing all that, but this is the reason why Apple is winning over customers. This isn't my first Sony product, but it certainly will be my last if you guys can't issue a BIOS update utility that is compatible with the latest windows OS.

    9:05 AM Veronica - (C5DW):
I understand your concern , but this is only way. It is highly recommend to install all the updates available before upgrading to windows 8.1.

    9:07 AM Veronica - (C5DW):
Is there anything else I may assist you?

    9:08 AM Customer:
No, I don't think you can assist with anything else. Thanks.

After upgrading to Windows 8.1, If I let my screen turn off (after 5 minutes idle), it does not come on again, no matter what I do. My only option is to force a shutdown by holding the power button. Any ideas?

Ordered one last weekend and just noticed that it's been shipped. It doesn't show a tracking code. I'm in the UK, how long do they typically take to arrive? I believe they come from China?

I'm going to be putting Linux on it so I'm sure I've got some fun ahead!

Is that the bug where after waking from sleep the brightness can't be adjusted? Mines is working fine now but I haven't waking it from sleep too many times now.

The wake sleep big is still there, maybe I'll change to hibernate.

@hamud, I can't install the sata driver either, I tried updating the sata driver in the device manager, windows tells me it is the most up to date one. I only have 1 unknown device in my list, something to do with bluetooth.

for those considering updating to 8.1, I'd say wait a bit, until all the kinks and problems are worked out.

Make sure you are choosing Windows 8.1 and not 8 for the OS on Sony's support page.

I'm getting the sleep bug as well, I disabled the automatic sleep for now. Manually putting it to sleep seems to work just fine. Has anyone tried running all the Windows 8.1 driver updates?

Me too! I am literally pissed off with sony on this. I guess when you pay more than 1500 bucks, you would expect a better support from them. But no. The answer for this is to recover to win8. ?
And to top it off win 8.1 cleaned off my win 8 recovery. I can't even go back to win 8.
To add to it, the laptop is unable to read my usb drive that contains the recovery.
I have no frigging clue on what to do next!

I was dreading this update to 8.1 as I have had no problems with fan or WiFi but I simply insured I had all the Sony W8 drivers installed and labelled as must have for 8.1 and the 6 files from windows update for 8.1

I also installed all the drivers required under 8.1 that must be installed first before the upgrade

I followed the upgraded windows tile, after the installation I ran Vaio care update and installed the 6 updates and 1 separate one and one manual one

I did note an error with Sata so I down loaded this manually, not sure we even need it and I did have to reinstall the BT drivers manually after I had one drop out this morning

    else

Everything seems fine especially getting rid of those dam tiles :)

That review seems quite fair. The reporter says
    1. Wifi is a problem
    2. Screen too dim for a machine touted as mobile
    3. Machine's CPU is highly throttled
    4. Is overpriced

    Very portable though

Seems that the bug isn't triggered by sleep, it's the screen dimming. Before installing all the updates, I set the screen dimming to 1 minute and let it sit until the screen shut off. After the screen went black, I was not able to wake up the computer and was forced to do a hard shutdown. After installing all the Windows 8.1 drivers from Sony's site, I was able to wake the screen like normal after it goes black. When installing the Intel drivers, be sure to restart in between or some might fail.
